I love to eat at El Bolillo Bakery. It all started because my boyfriend really loves their conchas, so he was the one who introduced me to the place. I've always liked bakeries, but I try to eat on the healthier side, so I usually avoid anything that might tempt me.But I am a sucker for cinnamon rolls, so when I saw they had them, of course I had to try one and they are so, so good. Now we actually go there about once every two weeks because we love it that much and I look forward to opening the front doors and smelling the sweet smell of baked goods Recently we also found out that they have cheese & sausage kolaches, and oh my gosh, they are delicious. They are really, really good and were such a nice surprise when we tried them. The location closest to us is the one on Airline Drive, and we usually go in the afternoon so we can avoid the after-work crowd. That time of day works really well for us because there aren't too many people, which makes it easier to grab bread and look around without feeling rushed. The ordering process is pretty quick and simple. You grab your metal tray and tongs, open each little door, pick what you want, and put it on the tray. When you're ready, you go to the register where the ladies count the breads, ring everything up, and bag it nicely for you. We're usually in and out pretty fast, which we really like. We love going to El Bolillo, and at this point it has definitely become a staple for us. We honestly can't get enough of it. read more

As a person native born to Houston, but having lived and explored much of the world, one of my favorite things to do is to invite friends to go on a walking tour with me, of the area around the Houston Farmer's Market on Airline. Many years run by the Canino family, as a co-op with local farmers. And when they retired a group of Houstonians, committed to preserving it and making it as nice as possible for shopping. And it's a wonderful place to go shopping for fruits and vegetables and to eat one of the restaurants here. So I usually begin my walking tour with a trip to El Bolillo Bakery to show them the breads and then over to Granel Spices and then to El Rey meat market to show them the chorizo that I like and the freshly made chicharrones and to pointing out the most excellent Mexican restaurant just on the side El Rey. And then heading over to the farmers market proper and showing them the excellent flour tortillas that one can get at Alamo Tamales. A visit to LA Crawfish or other eateries. And also walk and talk about the different uses of the spices and maybe some tropical fruits that people might not be familiar with. It's a great half day and I love taking people around. So definitely plan to visit this area of Airline Drive and have some fun. read more

These are the types of places I like to see thrive in the communities, you know it's a good product when it's packed and always busy The only downside is the heavy tray carrying around will wear you out haha but it's worth it! They got some really good sugar donuts I happen to go on some a couple occasions where the donuts were piping, hot and soft and as soon as you took a bite into it, they melted! The pan Bolillo are so good they are great for sandwiches or by itself or maybe dip it in coffee if you do that. They have empanadas with fruits and cheese. My favorite is the cheese and the piña. The concha's are great. The muffins and sugar cookies also great they have so much good stuff. What I like about this bakery everything is fresh so when you take it home, these pastries, these breads they don't go stale next day. And that's what I like about this place.. maybe it's just me but that's my opinion. this is probably one of my favorite bakeries in the Houston area. I've been following El Bolillo for a while. Travel finally took us to Houston, so it was a required stop! It's right across the street from the Farmers Market with lots of parking. At 10:30 am it was packed, but oddly organized. The inside was warm and the smells were out of this world! We went in for a couple of treats and walked out with enough for a football team. When you walk in the entire bakery has cases that you can take tongs and a tray to to select all of the items that you would like to purchase. When you are done collecting all of your goodies, you take them to the counter where they are weighed and placed into a box for you to pay. I come here for caramel filled churros. They are off the charts good!!! They are just below the hot out of the grease made to order ones that I had in the Yucatán Mexico. I also like the pineapple empanadas. I don't really care for most pasteles & I definitely don't need them because I try to keep my weight in a certain area. However, El Bolillo is authentic. I'm generally the only semi gringo here. I'm adopted. My birth mother's parents & other ancestors are from Mexico. Today I came on February 13th forgetting that tomorrow is Valentine's Day. They were super busy, but I was in & out in a hurry. They had special treats for the holiday. I haven't gotten tamales here for so long that I will not include them in my review. Their namesake and signature item, the bolillo is like a dinner roll with a mini version (bolillitos) to boot. The teleras are underrated, as is their manitas de chocolate. I am here most often for their custom cakes. From the online order to quick phone orders, I'm so impressed with how easy they've made the process. Above all, these pasteles are so well made that I constantly have guests ask me where I get them. Their Mexican tres leches cake is among the best I've had and a perfect cake for any special occasion. Went here on a whelm on Saturday after a visit to the farmers market across the street. This place is SUPER busy. I'm not sure if it's like that every day, but on this day, it was. To me, that's a huge indication that it's got to be the best. When I walked in, I grabbed my tray and tongs and started to walk around and pick the pastries that caught my eye. I must admit, I wasn't planning on getting as many items as I did, but they looked way too good to pass up. I also noticed that they had tamales. Why not just pick up a dozen of those for dinner? When I went to the register, there were two women working the register. Neither one of them spoke English and were pretty upset that I didn't speak Spanish. Don't get me wrong, I don't care if someone doesn't speak English, just don't give me bad service because I don't speak Spanish. Luckily, there was a nice gentleman in line behind me who spoke English and Spanish and translated for me. After they added up my pastries, I asked for a dozen pork tamales. They rang them up at two 1/2 dozens. I was ok with that because maybe they only come in 1/2 dozen packs. After you pay for everything, you have to go stand in another line to get your tamales. Again, they ladies working at that counter were very annoyed that I didn't speak Spanish. So, I just handed them my receipt and said that I had paid for a dozen tamales. They reached into the cooler and pulled out one package of tamales. The foil was tore open, but I didn't want to complain about that. I asked them if it was a dozen. She said yes, so I showed her my receipt and said that I had paid for a dozen. She said, "Yes, dozen." So I trusted that it was in deed a dozen. When I got home and planned to serve the tamales for dinner, I opened the foil pack, and there were only 6 tamales in there. So, she gave me a 1/2 dozen when I had paid for a whole dozen. So, I had to change dinner plans on the fly when I thought I had enough tamales for 4 people. Back to the store I go. The takeaway from visiting this place for the first time. The staff is VERY rude, especially if you don't speak Spanish. I realize that I'm only one person, and this place makes plenty of money without me going there, but I will not be returning. There are plenty of other places that serve these types of pastries that have much better customer service and don't take your money without giving you what you pay for. read more

This place has everything- bolillos, empanadas, conchas, marranitos biscuits, cakes, cheesecake, and all the other pan dulces that I didn't really grow up eating. The place is busy. I think we arrived at 6 on a Saturday and it was packed. Everyone knew what they were doing. Everyone was on a mission. It was literally every person for themselves. In the meantime, I was floundering in search of tongs. Finally with tongs in hand, I judiciously followed my boyfriend around to put the desired item on the tray. Seriously. It's a two person job. We picked pieces from each case and realized... no marranitos??? A nice lady directed us to a baker's rack full of freshly made pastries where I found the reach of delicious cookies! And they have packages tortillas!! The marranitos were my favorite. As Usual. They were perfect with my coffee. The conchas were soft, sweet, and delightful. The tortillas are perfect!! I wish I stocked up. The only disappointed was the empanadas. I thought I was getting cheese, but ended up with quince. Not bad, but definitely not cheese! 10/10. I was preparing for Día de los Muertos so I called to make sure they had pan de muerto and they did. I'm glad they answered the phone. When I got there it was chaos. So many people getting their pan on a Friday afternoon! I did like the variety of pan, galletas, cake pops, and especially Día de los muertos themed sweets. I was annoyed with their lack of organization on the line. I waited to be checked out, got to the front, and the cashier told me there was another line I had to wait. It made no sense. I've had the opportunity to visit several times during weekdays after being in the area for work, and this is a wonderful bakery location! Having tried the Wayside Dr location, I was hoping that the North Houston El Bolillo would hit a similar mark. This location has been great! My main go-to is the bolillitos with cheese, jalapeño and chorizo. Every time I've visited, they've been fantastic. The bread is wonderfully fresh and they add a nice amount of chorizo with each bite. I also tried the macarons and found them very tasty and with a lovely crunch level, though they were more expensive than I expected. The parking outside has always been sufficient when I've visited (on the weekends around lunch time). There's also a farmers market across the street with a lot of fresh produce. Staff have been very kind and efficient with checking you out. The store itself is a little more cramped compared to the Wayside location. Even at noon, there are often long lines, because this bakery is just too popular (in the best way possible)! On a side note, I saw the El Bolillo tamales on a list of best Houston tamales and can't wait to check them out on my next visit!
