We got 3 Catfish lunch specials and loved it. Sides were: 1. Cornbread = Good balance of sweet 2.Mac & cheese = Good mix of quality cheese with the perfectly broiled top. Greens = Mix of collared & spinach with chunks of turkey and NOT over cooked really nice 3. French fries were nice and thick but a bit salty 4. Lemon pudding cake was supper sweet (I like sweet but to much for me) 5. Red velvet not sweet enough 6. Peach Cobbler was GOOD but you need to like Cinnamon & no crunchy top but good balance of gooey crust to peaches. Staff was very personable and nice, asked if we needed anything and very attentive. There is no Waitress really and you have to order at the counter but the cashier checked in when there was no line. read more

The food is tasty, but the sides are extremely tiny. However, the desserts were very delicious. If the sides had been at least double their size, it would have been a 5 star review. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars because of the sides, but decided on 4 because of the dessert. read more

OMG Wow, was in the area from the West San Fernando Valley - saw the review and stopped to get some food for home. Portion size huge, taste was amazing and priced well for quality food! Warning- if u have a sweet tooth you will get trapped up by all the amazing desserts they have for you to choose. And those sweet ladies working there know the good eats they have. Indulge in the great food @ Alma's... I had - the sautéed Turkey plate and smothered pork chops... and banana pudding for dessert. The banana pudding was so good. I wish I could have gotten two. My tongue is still recovering from Saturday from the fried chicken burning it. I took my food to go and it was extremely hot. I ordered fried chicken wings, Mac and cheese, and candy yams. The fried chicken season was in the batter and now on the chicken. The macaroni and cheese didn't have enough cheese but it was good. The candy yams were good. Was it worth a total of $22.00? No....but I understand Compton and how high the rent is in LA County. Would I return? Just for the desserts. Ooooo-we!!!! This place here!! The parking is free and convenient, depending on the time of day you go...as it shares a parking lot with other businesses. The establishment has nice decor, plenty of seating, clean, and good energy. The staff (especially Brandon) is amazing!!! Now the food.....it's so delicious!! Having roots from Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas - I know good food!! Shrimp and grits: lovely presentation, seasoned well, good amount of shrimp, and the grits were cooked perfectly Salmon croquettes: not my 86 year old Granny's croquettes, but dang good for a restaurant!! A la carte fried fish: also very good. You get A LOT of pieces for an a la carte potion. *I got the peach cobbler to go and it was ok. It was a bit juicy/wet/runny. I prefer my PC a little thicker with crust and not so much juice. However, the taste of the peach cobbler was good! Not too much of any one seasoning. My husband and I entered the establishment and was very pleased with what we saw. The dining area was clean, every table was adorned with a little basket filled with most of the condiments A person would need to enhance their meals. The restaurant is decorated beautifully. We were greeted by the cashier/waitress. We explained that it was our first visit, so she presented and explained the menu to us. She also stated that we would have to walk up to the counter to make our order, which was fine. Next, The Cook came out to greet us that she heard it was our first visit. She also explained the menu a bit further. Well, after looking over the menu and deciding what we wanted to eat, my husband and I walked up to the counter and made our order. The total came out to be a little over $40... They offer fruit infused water, so we helped ourselves to a small cupful.... it was oh so delicious and a very lovely touch and add to the already great customer service. after about 12 minutes of waiting, our food arrived. We were pleased with the presentation and the taste of the food. We both ordered the large breakfasts... my husband chicken wings and myself fish, plus a side order of salmon croquettes. Every thing was DELICIOUS! I was disappointed with the grape jelly that was delivered with our plates, but that was all taken care of once the waitress told me they had strawberry jam... Yum! The biscuits melted in our mouth's and they served it with real butter! That was a huge plus. ....and oh, no condiments besides strawberry jam was needed. All in all, our visit here was a great experience. If I had to pick out something that I didn't like about the experience I would have to say it would be that my husband's food came out a couple of minutes before mine did. But my frustration went away as soon as I took my first bite :-) We are looking forward to paying Alma's another visit in the near future. read more

Only got dessert so that's the only thing I can comment on. The carrot cake was delicious. Very moist with amazing cream cheese frosting. The German chocolate was ok. Good, but not nearly as moist as carrot. I also bought a banana pudding that was very tasty. Real chunks of banana and the pudding itself was kinda caramel in flavor. I would definitely get the banana and carrot again. The prices were a little higher than expected. I understand the high costs of running a business now so it's expected but those prices would make me second guess getting these treats more often. read more

Found Alma's on Yelp while stuck on jury duty across the street. Have now been there twice within a week! Everything is delicious! I love the turkey chops! (I never even knew turkey chops were a thing) The meat is juicy and perfectly seasoned and crispy. The Mac and cheese is rich and gooey. Came back with the family, also got to try the fries and ox tails. Hubby cleaned the bones and said the gravy was "heaven." The fries had great flavor and were very fresh and crispy. On the first visit, I took home a piece of banana pudding cheesecake, which hubby said was the best cheesecake he's ever had, today we got a cheesecake combo with animal cookie, Oreo, and creamsicle flavors. I can't pick a favorite. They are all so good! In addition to great food, you will encounter great people. In two visits I interacted with 5 people, all of whom were warm, friendly and welcoming. My family took me here to celebrate my graduation. It was my first time going here. It's a beautiful restaurant with great ambiance and service. Expensive but great food. My brother promised me to take me back when I get my Masters Degree lol. It's going to be a while but he better keep his promise. The food was great. Even though my to go order was kinda cold. And the facility had NO restroom for customer use - that really through me off and disappointed me greatly. The owner came out and appeared to be a very kind and generous hostess; checking on customers and providing tidbits about the events in the neighborhood. The cashiers were also super friendly and polite. My wife ordered a lunch special cost $15 pork chop black eyed peas and yams. she asked could you smother it he said not a problem. then i got the chicken wing lunch special with greens and mac n cheese $15... when the bill came it was $44. she said you didn't charge me for the lunch special he said yeah i did but gravy extra. so he charged us $14 extra for the gravy $7 on each special. I think I found my new soul food place !! This place is a hidden gem, but I'm sure with all the exposure from Yelp and word of mouth it won't be hidden much longer. This place is located near the Compton courthouse nestled in a shopping center next to Popeye's. When you enter into the restaurant you feel you traveled back down South where your grandma, aunties and cousins live. Its such a warm and inviting set up. The employees there are very friendly and courteous and helpful to assist with what you would like to order. I also met the owner Alma who was a joy to converse with. Now on to the food ...lol. Let me just say its so good, "make you wanna slap yo mama" good. I ordered the fried catfish lunch with a side of yams and mac n cheese. My tastebuds were exploding. The fish was fried upon ordering, the mac n cheese was amazing and the yams was just the right amount of sweetness. They also have water (infused w/fruit)if you choose not to have soda or juice. My husband and I were referred to Alma's by my coworker who is born and raised in Compton and raved about Alma's as having the best soul food in LA. We decided to try this place out and it had its plus of supporting a black owned business. Let's just say, Alma's is FANTASTIC! We came on a Saturday for takeaway. I ordered via phone and a nice man took my order. He was very patient and answered all of my questions I had about the menu. He explained the choices for the turkey chop (fried, smothered, pan seared) and what's popular. We ordered the fried turkey chop with mac and cheese, black eyed peas, and greens, and the smothered pork chop with mac and cheese, greens, and yams. He said it would be ready in 25 minutes; we arrived 25 minutes later and our food was ready. The nice guy who answered the phone was the one to greet us and he was very friendly and personable. He even helped us choose a dessert so we also ordered the banana pudding and sweet potato pie. In review of the food, everything was DELICIOUS. It is everything that you could want in soul food. The turkey chop wasn't dry but rather moist and savory. My husband's pork chop was to die for. The mac and cheese, black eyed peas, and greens were well seasoned. I didn't try the yams, but my husband said they were cooked perfectly. However, I think the best part of the meal was the desserts. The sweet potato pie was delicious, but the banana pudding is out of this world. It wasn't too sweet and it had a breading that was so tasty. The price is very reasonable considering you get three sides with it (for dinner). Parking isn't difficult as it has a parking lot. I got the catfish with mac &cheese and greens and for dessert got I the lemon and carrot cake. The catfish was perfectly cooked, the mac was super flavorful, and I still have dreams about the cakes; my only complaint was the greens, they were an 9 out of 10. Now you might be saying "Mark, 9 is still great", and I would tell you "yes it is, but everything else was at least a 15 out of 10, so the greens just could not compete with the awesomeness of everything else".
