This is an interesting place, in that I have been in to look around several times and its hit or miss. Sometimes the staff are warm friendly and very accommodating at I look around, showing me different creatures or telling me stories about the individuals. Other times, like today, the desk staff is cold and not very welcoming. "No we don't have any of those..." My advise to anyone looking for a pet at AHHS, if you don't feel welcome, excuse yourself and come back on a different day. Please remember most of the staff are volunteers and they don't get paid for their time and services. read more

My friend tried to adopt a dog there and they were currently in the process of adopting (they told her she could get the dog that same day) and they gave it to someone else. The staff is not too friendly either, especially the dog staff. They act like it's a problem when you ask to see a dog. read more

I had such a great experience adopting my pup, Allie, from here. I drove in from Carmel after seeing Allie on the website. There was a large line and everyone was there for her, which sounded like it was common when a small dog arrived. They had us spaced out and only allowed a few people in at a time. I got to go into a play room with Allie for about 10 minutes and then filled out my application. I interacted with probably five staff members and they were all super friendly and helpful. About an hour after I left, they called and told me I'd been chosen as Allie's forever home. I've now had her three months and she's been such a blessing! I'm so thankful for Almost Home! read more

I've been here before, and it is a wonderful animal shelter with reasonable/borderline high adoption fees. They always have a pretty good turn over and do a great job socializing the animals, so if you are looking for a pet (cats and dogs, sometimes rodents) you are in the right place. They are slow to respond to requests to view animals personally outside of the cages, and on busy days they don't handle it well, but in all are an on par animal shelter. I am posting the next part with the hope that management will see it: However, every time I've gone, the people who staff the front desk are so rude. I don't even know why they volunteer, because they behave like the prospect of adopting an animal is inconvenient. My most recent bazar interaction: On Saturday at about 3:00pm, a middle aged Curley/poofy blonde haired woman screamed at me for using the hand sanitizer (provided for people to clean hands before looking at the animals) and another male volunteer (around 50 years old, white man with short hair) told me I was " lucky they didn't pull a taser on me". We adopted our cat on 09/03/2022 and she is wonderful! All of the staff members were absolutely incredible, helpful, kind and caring! The staff has such a difficult job to do and they do it to their best as possible! They need so many more volunteers and I would like to volunteer but I would adopt every cat! Lafayette and West Lafayette are lucky to have such a professional and well run Humane Society. We got our cat Louie from there after about a six month stay with them and I can honestly say he is one of the best cats I have ever owned. I love that their first priority is to save as many animals as they can and even go above and beyond to not only save them, but to keep them healthy and happy until they can find them good homes! Horrible. My wife and I have been keeping an eye on the website for a month and a half waiting for a specific cat to come up for adoption. When she did, my wife and I dashed to the shelter to get her. The staff even recognized us and knew who we were there for, as we had stopped in several times over the month and a half period to make sure she was still there, that she was doing ok, and to spend some time with her. So we fill out the application, and (keep in mind, the shelters been open for less than an hour now, and no one else has been there and they don't take online applications) one of the rude staff comes in to let my wife and I know that "they're going to consider other options since there is a lot of interest in this cat." Keep in mind also that this comment suddenly came about after my wife mentioned we already have a few cats. The staffer tells my wife "we will call you if we decide you can have her." Needless to say, she's off the website as of this afternoon. Funny, I've never seen this place hold an animal because there were "other interested parties" before. Hell of a way to run a humane society. I won't be back. I'll take my business to private breeders from now on. read more

My family and I adopted a young dog back in May and got a lot of help from a very nice young man that was working that's day . I have zero complaints about my dog he's the best . And with the help from the staff we got a dog that was great with our young children. However he was very sick with kennel cough and the vet he saw shortly after we adopted him was very upset. This was not the first adopted dog from almost home she had seen recently with kennel cough. This ended up costing a lot of money and my biggest worry was that he wasn't gonna make it . I had just put my 13 year old dog down the year before so it was stressful. My husband called and let almost home know about the terrible kennel cough and parasites that he had . They laughed at us ! These are animals that need medical care that could die or get your other animals sick ! Be very careful adopting here go on a weekday and immediately go to a vet after! read more

I rescued a litter of kittens and had taken care of them for the first 6 weeks. When I needed them placed, the folks were caring and compassionate. I had grown attached to them and it was hard for me to let them go, but I have 7 cats and 3 dogs. The women there saw that and gave me a moment to say good bye and they reassured me they would be fine. They even told me I could call and check on them if I wished. They get 5 stars in my books. No, I'm not the crazy cat lady....I'm a retired Teamster. FYI for Erica W., they work their keysters off and care for those without a voice, so try a little patience and compassion yourself princess, it goes a long way. read more

I started volunteering and getting involved with Almost Home last month. They never refuse any strays and they even take abandoned pets. The kennels are very clean and they have hand sanitizers everywhere. There are always volunteers cleaning and socializing with the animals. I went here looking for cats. First time coming to this place. Nowhere did it say we had to sign in before looking at pets. So when we started waking back to the cat rooms, we were yelled at to sign in. Then when we got inside there were no prices anywhere. Then I was talked to rudely when I asked how much adoption fees were. My girlfriend fell in love with a cat in the main room. There was no info just the name. So when we asked about her, a volunteer came up to us and snapped at us 'she's not ready for adoption.' So we asked why not. She sighed real loud and kept going on and on about how she didn't know but she's just not ready. We kept looking at other cats and then realized we really wanted this cat that wasn't ready. So we asked for more information on when she would be ready. They got really really crappy with us. Didn't tell us much but when they were done they said 'ok. Cya later. Bye.' We were rushed out! I have adopted from Almost Home Humane Society a few times over the years with no complaints.... until now. I have a family member that recently adopted 2 hound dog mixed puppies. The whole litter was there. The morning they adopted, one pup passed away but they were assured the two they were giving a home were checked out and healthy. Not the case at all. Both of the pups are very sick. They're all several meds and are requiring blood transfusions due to bleeding in their stomachs. They were adopted on a Friday and all of this happened over the weekend. They now have to come up with over $2000 to treat the pups or face having to put them down. They have fallen in love with these little babies and now have to consider putting them down. They are crushed, as well as their children. Knowing a pup had passed that morning they should have NEVER adopted those two out. It's not right. Absolutely heartbreaking. read more

I would highly recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a new familial addition. The place was packed with a fantastic staff and group of volunteers who truly seemed to care about the animals. They have a large selection of cats and dogs which is also a disheartening aspect. It's great that they take care of so many animals in need but it truly is saddening to come in and see all the animals just begging for a loving home. We have adopted two pets from here. AAHS was great about handling both of them. The first adoption was our first pet so I had to wait until I purchased all the needed supplies before I could bring her home. The staff was great and ensured that nobody else could adopt her before I returned in a couple days. They made the adoption process quick and easy. They were also good about getting the spay/neuters scheduled with local vets before we took them home. Upon adoption we were given a packet that helped us locate a great vet in town and also had information and coupons to help us offset the initial cost of ownership when purchasing supplies. After adopting our first pet, we saw a posting that AAHS was in need of foster parents for a litter of kittens that were sick and needed someone who could help with giving them their medications. Being happy about our adoption experience, we were happy to assist. The fostering process ended up being easier than we thought it would. They provided us with everything that we could have possibly needed to care for the kittens (cage, food, litter boxes, etc). Anytime we had a question they were immediately available to walk us through whatever we needed help with. The hardest aspect of the foster program was giving the kittens back. We watched two of the three get adopted immediately after returning them and couldn't bear to see the third sit there in the shelter. That's when we became "foster failures". Everything happens for a reason, right? Our experiences with AAHS were fantastic and I wish we could help out more of the animals looking for forever homes but two pets is enough for us. An absolute horrible experience!! I went to adopt a dog was spending the time with the dog and filled out an application. At no time did they say "fill out your application first and put your hold money down first before you meet him because one of our staff members or volunteers may slip one in on you while you are bonding with this animal". That is exactly what happened to me. I decided I wanted to adopt him, filled out the application, came out to the reception area, the gal says she wants to put a hold and the same lady who I asked if I could meet with this dog says "Scruffy's already on hold 10 mins ago. One of their volunteers just decided to pop in while I was with him and put him on hold and leave again. To them these animals are just items. To most people adopting a new pet is a very personal and life changing event. First come, first serve they said, oops, our bad!! We had recently lost our beloved pet and I came here to find what I truly thought was a life companion for our family and this happens. It was like experiencing a loss all over again. I pray that their volunteer gives him the best life ever and that they realize this was a very heart breaking experience. I hope this doesn't happen to anybody else. Also, I should point out this dog has feces stuck all over his paw and I asked the gal if they bathe them before adopting them out and she said no, we don't bathe them. read more

In a nutshell I agreed to become a cat colony keeper for the Almost Home Humane Society. I was informed they spay the colony for free. I took the first two females and when they called, they told me one cat was done but the other was lost. They said someone had left the cage unlatched and the cat got out and into a hole in the wall. I conversed with several people and finally after a week, I asked to speak to the director. I was livid. A humane society allowing an animal to suffer for that long? I demanded they take down the wall and get her out. They did, spayed her, (against my wishes with the stress she had just been through), and I picked her up. She's never been the same. Short with her colony mates and has turned into a loner. AHHS ruined her. Their communication on that and other matters really stinks. Look elsewhere for a pet. They are substandard. Their staff was extremely rude which I found unusual since the whole situation was their fault. read more
