I'm so impressed with this animal shelter and how well it is run and loved by the community. We…read morestopped this weekend to drop-off a bit of everything on their wishlist. I was surprised to see so many other cars in the parking lot. There was another family dropping off donations, and a family who was picking-up a new member of their family, a well cared for dog. There were also three teens who were cleaning the cat kennels in a separate room. The main room is open where there is a couch, fireplace, laundry room and office with cat kennels and four large, dog kennels surrounding the room. The animals all looked relaxed - the small to medium size dogs were excited, the kittens were play fighting and adult cats were either sleeping or chilling. There was also another room that housed 8 large dogs, and they all had a nice, cozy place to sleep, plenty of room to walk around and fresh food and water. On each cage, there were notes about the dogs, like "hard toys only", "keep in kennel, jumped over cage", etc. The third room housed more cats. It was small, and the smell was a bit over-powering, but the teens were busy cleaning each cage. The cats looked content and cared for. The entire facility is clean and well maintained. There are also kennels outside with tarps covering the tops to protect the dogs from sun and rain when they are let outside while their kennels are being cleaned. From the extra blankets, netting, fencing and wood boards, the care-givers have gone out of their way to keep the dogs from being able to escape or take nips at each other which I image happens when dogs get bored or playful. They all had several toys in their kennels too, as did all the cats. The volunteers at the shelter are very friendly, the board member present gave us a tour, answered all our questions, allowed us to wander the facility freely, and let us adore the animals at our leisure. I admired their system for organizing the food by expiration dates and mixing them to prevent the dogs from getting used to one and getting sick, if introduced to something different. They also have a system for letting the cats out of their cages to play and enjoy the room either during the day or night. From the amount of good sized kennels, towels, blankets, litter boxes, cat beds, toys and food, the community does its part in chipping in to keep this place going strong. They have a website and facebook profile. The VP on the board who was there that day was very gracious, welcoming, extremely nice and personable and could not thank us enough for our donations. It was also nice to learn that the members of the board are experienced animal rescuers and professionals in the community. We look forwards to working with them in the future.

I have personally adopted two dogs from HART over the past several years and these animals are two of the kindest, most gentle creatures on the planet. The description of the dogs' struggles and strengths was accurately described by staff. Both were well adjusted and people friendly. The shelter itself is clean and the dogs appear well taken care of. Staff stayed in the room with me as I met the dog to answer questions and to see the relationship between myself and the dogs. The application is available online and it can be pre-approved before you even see a dog. This really cuts down on the disappointment that the dog you were interested in might be adopted by someone else while they determine your suitability. With both dogs, we were sent home with the heartworm medication that had been started at the shelter. For one of my dogs, that was almost three months of medication. My dogs were both fixed and fully vaccinated. They were both chipped. The adoption fee was a little under $200. Some might feel that is a lot for a mutt a few years old. I'm here to tell you I actually wrote a check for my dogs that exceeded the adoption fee because I was so very grateful for the way they run their business. I want HART to continue to have the ability to to flourish and grow. PetSmart sometimes features their animals during their adoption events in store. You can also give donations to HART at PetSmart during some points in the year. Consider supporting them with your donations and adoptions. It is well worth it.

The have a great foster-to-adoption program when even though everyone knows youre adopting a new kitty, you still get help with finding services, texted for vaccination scheduling, and these services are free, feeding into the $100 adoption fee after they've been spayed/ neutered. He had an eye infection randomly and Cheyenne was ON IT and very helpful with providing me and vet for him. She is incredibly kind and just genuinely wanted my little guy to have a good life.

The organization has assembled a good network of homes to foster dogs and cats until permanent homes can be found. The fostering experience helps the pets adjust to normal home environments so that they have the best chance of transitioning to a forever homes. The organization is a private non-for-profit that is run mostly by volunteers. We regularly donate to support the efforts. They frequently bring adoptable dogs to events such as local farmers markets. This weekend they brought about a dozen dogs to the Zionsville Farmers Market. Foster parents were on hand to let potential owners know the dog's names, age and history. They offered a great selection of young small and large dogs. We are exploring getting a dog to join our aging 17-year old Yorkie. Interacting with the assorted dogs was a good experience and helped us decide on next steps. Adoption fees range from $75 to $300, depending on the dog.

The kennels are very large and clean and the animals seem very well cared for. Theres a large fenced yard for the dogs to run around safely. The female even flagged us down as we left to let us know there was a freeway closure since they knew it was on our way home. Super nice people. The shelter seems to have more of a variety of dogs, not just the usual pitbulls you see at shelters. Definitely keeping an eye on their website for available dogs.

Then you just walk through the doors down the side and that's where they have all the new cages that allowed the dogs to go indoors and outdoors both depending on the weather. Plenty of good parking in the nice new parking lot. I think once per month they offer discounts from a local veterinarian on having your pets spayed or neutered. This is a great place to look and try to find a pet a forever home. They also have a walking path at the rear of the property that you can take the dog and walk through the woods and back. Several volunteers were there taking the animals on walks.

I went on the site and saw pictures of the Cavaliers that were up for adoption. They were really so cute that I google this breed and fell in love with them. So I applied to foster a dog and about a week later they called and told me that they had just found out about this puppy mill in MO that had been shut down and they were driving there to pick up 20 dogs and puppies. So they needed fosters right away. I drove to Indiana and picked up the dog (puppy) that I was fostering. Her name was Fergie and she was 6 months old and in perfect health. Well, of course I knew I was going to fail at being a foster because the second I met Fergie...I knew she was mine. So about a week after I was fostering her I finally broke the news to Lucky Star that I was going to adopt Fergie. The whole process was very easy and what a great feeling to know she was rescued away from a bad life. They pay all the vet bills for being fixed, a complete check up, all their shots and teeth checked. They do ask for a donation when you adopt. But they do have alot of vet bills as some of the dogs that come out of puppy mills aren't always healthy because they were so abused. A small cost for saving the life of a beautiful, snuggable, kissable puppy. I want to rescue a bunch more, but I am at the limit of two dogs right now. I called around Lafayette and spoke with several facilities (I wrote a harsh review on one of these due to the nasty things the "certified professional groomer" said about other local facilities) regarding setting up an appointment for Spider. The CS at Pittsburgh was helpful, but you do need to begin this process by pulling up their website and filling out their new client form. I booked an appointment a week out. The timing was good for the area. Like most good groomers, they are booked out. On the appointed day, we met with Chloe, our groomer, who was very kind and attentive to my ramblings about an old, "not so friendly cat" and this being Spider's first grooming appointment. Even with an appointment, drop off times are "open", meaning "any time between 7-11a" so I assume pick ups are varied too. We dropped off at 8a and were told she would be done by noon. I needed to get out of town by noon so I called at 11a to see how it was going and was told Spider was ready to go home. Done early. Sweet! We picked her up shortly there after. We again got to meet with our groomer, Chloe, which was a nice "follow up" service. Grooming was reasonably priced at $68 for a bath, brush out, knots cut out and nails trimmed. Spider looked amazing! Please remember to tip your groomer. I am sure Chloe was not paid enough for wrestling with this old obnoxious cat that my Mother so dearly loves.

A friend who does my hair recommended Dr. Baker to me. And they have exceeded my expectations. Dr. Baker, Dr. Dave, and their staff really care for their patients. My old girl, Layla, had lost a lot of weight and was having trouble getting around. We did a quality of life evaluation with Dr. Baker, and although Layla was getting close, she hadn't given up. Dr. Baker noticed that, and said "You're her human." A month later, I was going to have my knees replaced and asked Dr. Baker if she could recommend someplace that could board Layla in her declining condition for a few days until I got home. Without hesitation, Dr. Baker said she would have her staff do it. After my surgery, I was able to spend a few days with Layla. They also operate a walk-in wellness center on Sagamore Parkway and Greenbush that is open on Wednesday - Friday afternoons and Saturday until 1 pm. Their prices are reasonable and the care is fantastic. Layla, Hurley, and now puppy Sage get to enjoy their care.

I volunteered here when I was in high school and got my black lab from Almost Home years ago so this place has always been near and dear to my heart. But about a month ago, I stopped by to make a donation in memory of my sister's pet. A staff member took my name, address, and phone number then handed me a receipt. I asked if she needed my sister's name and address so they could send her a memorial card or note. I was told that their facility doesn't do that and I would have to send the receipt or send my own card. When my lab died 5 years ago, I received a beautiful card from the Purdue Veterinary School signed by the doctor and vet techs saying a donation was made in my dog's memory (the amount not disclosed). It was a much appreciated and touching gesture. When I got home, I went to Almost Home's website and to my surprise, I found this statement under the 'Donate' tab: "A donation made in memory or in honor of a beloved pet, family member, friend, a friend or family member's beloved pet, etc. is a thoughtful tribute for your loved one and also helps the thousands of animals we care for each year. Memorials and honorariums can be made in any amount you choose. Acknowledgment letters will be sent to the family of the person or pet being remembered or honored (if an address is included); the gift amount will not be disclosed. Acknowledgment letters that can be used for tax purposes are sent to the donor and include the gift amount." After reading this, I called Almost Home and asked to speak to a manager. I explained the situation and she suggested I leave a voice mail message for the director. Unfortunately, she did not know how to transfer me to the director's line. I ended up writing a formal letter to the director explaining the situation. I never did heard back from the director. I've had the pleasure of working with the staff of AHHS for years through various other nonprofits. Not only do they amazing work for their animals, they are kind and give back to others. My family has adopted several cats from AHHS and each one became a special part of our family. They were well-cared for and the staff went above and beyond to help us find the perfect addition. I first adopted from AHHS back in 1997 and have since had 3 furbabies from them. They have all been wonderful. The staff truly cares about each animal that comes through. Highly recommend. read more

Upon walking dog and his brother dog inside (a rescue with separation anxiety who always comes along so as not to wake my neighbors), there was an aggressive acting pit bull in the car next to us. The owner stepped out, leaving her dog in the car to check in, apologizing about him. I said it was ok. I check my dog in and sit in the dog area with adaptil diffuser, our custom. Then I overheard the pit owner say upon check-in that she wished to keep her dog separate from others, as he was still in the car (weather was fine for this). I immediately breathed a sigh of relief. A staff member then takes us to our waiting room. The vet tech enters the room and closes the door. She asks if we got a weight on my dog at check-in and I said no but that I did NOT want my dog to come into contact with the pit. VT opened the door to said animal entering to check out my dog, owner at the other end of his leash. I then said please shut the door. I don't want this. VT continues to ignore my wishes and refuses to simply shut the door (pit restrained and shutting door would be easy). I then more insistently said I don't want this PLEASE shut the door. VT still refused, though I was clearly distressed. She even pushed to facilitate a meet-n-greet, though neither I nor the pit mama wanted this. FINALLY, the door is shut and in an effort to explain--yes after all of that I tried to explain MY actions, my experience in Indy with actual killer pit bulls--VT inexplicably turned to me and says that I need to take a deep breath and calm down. I said what I NEED is to leave. She said, ok! And that was the FIRST time she respected ANY of my wishes or boundaries to ensure physical and emotional safety for myself and my furkids There is absolutely no way I am letting her take my animal into a back room where I cannot watch her. If she has zero compassion, empathy, or respect for a paying, clearly speaking, human client, then how is she going to care for a nervous animal in distress. I am extremely disappointed that VCA, that Dr. Chad Colborn, would on his staff have someone with such blatant disregard--even contempt--for the clients and wonderful animals who keep the lights on. BE VERY CAREFUL HERE.

However, they then retracted the offer, citing an 'old policy' requiring dogs to attend 3 times a month to stay active--a rule they have not enforced in the years I've been coming here. Because of this sudden enforcement of a dormant rule, I was told my dog needs a 're-evaluation,' but they couldn't fit him in for that until next week. Effectively, I was turned away despite being a long-standing customer with a dog they know well. It is frustrating when a business prioritizes arbitrary bureaucracy over loyal customers.
