I'm a new customer of Almstead within the past few months and could not be happier with their service and my overall experience. As a new homeowner one of our concerns was a clearly visible dead tree, which was over 30 feet tall and leaning against another tree nearby. My new neighbors dubbed this the widow maker and refused to walk or park their cars nearby for fear of it falling. After calling Almstead we made an appointment for arborist Matt to come out and render an opinion. He was kind enough to walk our entire property (approximately half an acre) and render an opinion on all of our trees, pointing out several other dead trees and those that could benefit from pruning. He was patient to answer our questions and concerns, and even spoke to some neighbors the same day regarding their trees. After receiving a quote the same day, Matt was flexible to prioritize those items that we were ready to move forward with and did not push us to pay for those items that we didn't want to do. Several weeks later Matt and the team (Antonio, Javier, Luis) came back to take down two trees and trim two others. It was clear that safety was a top priority of theirs, and they took the time to clean up the yard before leaving. Several months later, a very large limb fell off one of those trees that was pruned, so we called Matt back out to take a closer look. He reinspected the tree, identified what seemed to be the culprit, and assured us that the tree is safe. He even took the time to take a closer look at spots on my lawn where I suspected a fungus was developing, identifying the problem as chinch bugs (never heard of them before). All-in-all, I would highly recommend Matt and the team out of the Hawthorne office. They're down to earth, will address your concerns, and won't try to steal your money with needless projects. Patrick McVey came to my house to do an estimate & he was as professional & nice as can be. I had several things for them to do. All of the jobs combined were approx. $6,000. They required a 30% deposit. Very fair & standard. After getting the deposit, Patrick McVey's personality changed & he treated me like garbage & like he was my boss. They did the stump removal & did a HORRIBLE, SLOPPY JOB. They did not clean up: - They left blue surgical / Covid masks on my lawn. - They left stump parts everywhere That's not just my opinion. That's the opinion of: - 3 landscapers - 2 contractors - 1 electrician - 2 other tree guys When I contacted Patrick by phone & email to let him know that I was not happy with the stump grinding work and that his team left a mess, PATRICK McVEY NEVER GOT BACK TO ME. Then, I needed him to remove a tree. He told me he would do the work "AT A TIME OF HIS CONVENIENCE" & repeatedly treated me horribly. I had someone else do the work at a time of my convenience. Just when you thought they were the ordinary tree company, along comes Jeff Thrasher to prove differently. For 3 days we tried every means possible to help a 1 year old injured house cat that had gotten out, to get down from a tree it ran up. A VERY TALL tree. He spent almost 3 full days and 2 nights in the tree with no food or water. Crying for help. On Tuesday October 15th, as a last chance we called Almstead Tree Co. after calling everyone we could think of for 2 days. Starting with the fire department, the police, the city of Yonkers, Yonkers Animal Control, even a trapper and yet no one was willing to help us. Jeff heard the distress in my voice and within an hour he was there, by himself, to help rescue the cat. I can't say enough about Jeff, he made so many people happy and saved that cats life for sure. Seeing as the next day was one of the worst the season has seen so far with a nor'easter and heavy winds and rain, the cat definitely wouldn't have lasted another night let alone a storm like that. Thank you Jeff and Almstead Tree Company for going above and beyond!! You will always come highly recommended by us! We all slept better that night knowing he was safe. Especially the cat! You made a difference in a lot of people's lives that day and you are appreciated more than you know. Thank you for being Jeff Thrasher. We will never forget what you did that day. read more

Editing this review because I was contacted by the company and a representative to address it. The main reason I hired this company was to trim back the trees from power lines to keep my family safe. I recently moved into this home and community. The work I requested WAS part of quote, but just in different "options." So had I hired the company do to all of the work, the branches would have been trimmed back from the power-lines across my entire property. The following still can stay... The customer wants a job done so please follow what you say you are going to do. Also, don't send a crew that leaves a mess only to have to come back! Clear directions to trim back trees from power lines were not followed - we were charged and paid in full but still received notice from our power company that the trees were a hazard. (Which is why we hired this company to come and do this work.) Money spent to only have the power company come and complete the work for free! Never again. read more

We recently worked with Almstead to remove two large trees that were being killed by bugs. The team was very professional, careful to preserve the landscaping around the trees, and mindful of our property. They also trimmed several trees that now look so much better! After that, we had Almstead come back to treat our Hemlocks for infestation. The two technicians that came out were very friendly and knowledgeable about the treatment and trees on the property and were very patient with my many questions. Along with our next-door neighbor, we just had a leisurely no-obligation consultation with an Almstead arborist named Russell Wagner. It's no exaggeration to say he could not have been more knowledgeable, professional and friendly. In particular, there was none of the high-pressure hard-sell whatsoever that is such a prevalent business model these days - and, equally important, Russell automatically prioritized work that really needs to be done because of an imminent hazard versus other things that are desirable but not urgent. Russell's detailed written proposals are clear, thoughtfully organized and take into account all the various options we discussed - at prices that seem quite reasonable. Though we haven't had the work done yet, we do plan to proceed with it - and hope we have a lasting relationship with Almstead based on a great presentation by Russell that was as thorough and informative as it possibly could be. read more

I had been a costumer for years & the Arborist then was Tim . He was excellent- wonderful consultant , prompt in scheduling & always on time . He would call if there was a change or problem with the scheduling- geared to customer satisfaction & quality work. However, he left 2 years ago & since then I feel the quality has changed . Recently, no show on a scheduled treatment. No return of calls to schedule tree trimming after insisting on a deposit & charging my account & then no return calls re: scheduling - no feedback- no courtesy call to explain a delay - just no correspondence & a lot of aggravation & attitude. I called & asked for my deposit back & would never use them again. read more

I've had nothing but good experiences with them, specially with patrick. They really know their trees, and give you advise of exactly what you need even if it means not treating a tree for a given amount of time for the trees' health. I love their service. read more

They just want to cut your trees down to make money. They have no clue as to the health of a tree. They dont drill a hole through the trunk to bother to look. They eye ball it only and then if they detect you are scared of having the tree, they will of course come to your rescue and agree to take the tree down. I had multiple "arborists" come by and these guys are very expensive relatively. (of course i got 10 different opinions) Their other adjunct services for lawn and shrub care is a joke. I agree with a true landscape designer, its better to have one good landscaper who can do everything. For example, it's better to fertilize after yard cleanup. These guys dont care. They will so call fertilize before the lawn guy comes so that everything is blown away and you waste your money. I dont get it. Poor service. I would not recommend. Get one good landscaper who can do things the right way. read more
