I first met Stu Rinehart in 2017 when we did a major landscaping project that involved repaving walkways, replacing old fencing, adding new fencing and gates, as well as some lawn and shrubbery work. One of the things left undone was replacing a high maintenance, always thirsty backyard lawn. I let the Oahu drought of 2022 take it out. In early 2023 I took bids to replace it, add topsoil and compost to gardens, and some minor touch-up to previous, 5-year-old work. By far, Aloha Aina Landscaping's proposal was the most comprehensive, detailed, and best cost value, fitting exactly what I wanted to do -- roll El Toro sod in place of what was there, and fill in gardens with a mixture of top soil and clean compost, to which Stu added some beautiful mulch. When work started I was very impressed how project manager Nainoa and and team lead Patrick conducted the work. Patrick and his team were efficient, effective, and a joy to work with, going above and beyond, despite the bad weather at end. After 8 weeks of growth and cutting, they came back to level the sod's peaks and valleys with a sand/compost mix, which rapidly grew back in. They assured any work debris or spilled dirt was cleaned up each day, pressure washing sidewalks and the driveway at completion. Our back yard is again a source of pride, two paws up from our pup. This is an updated review from January 2023. It has been 9 months since drains and turf were installed and we have had time to see if drains worked after heavy rains. The great news is: the drains held up and we haven't experienced flooding or pooling in our backyard since installation-we did not have to bring out the sump pump once to redirect accumulated water! What a relief as we dealt with this nightmare for so long and went through multiple contractors until we felt like we found the best solution with Aloha'Aina. Thank you Stu for brainstorming and coming up with the best idea to solve our drainage problem. Plus he is always a phone call away if we have questions or need advice. His crew was great too and any issues that came up along the way were quickly resolved. We feel like they stand by their work and ultimately want their customers to be happy. We interviewed a number of landscape contractors to help us turn our dismal townhouse backyard into our vision of an inviting tropical rock garden. Our yard is on a golf course, so we wanted something that would add visual interest to complement the expanse of golf green in the background. From our first contact, Stuart was responsive, interested in our ideas, accommodating to our aesthetic and budgetary needs, and a person whose passion for his work was evident. After meeting with him a couple of times, it was clear that Aloha Aina was our top choice. We are so grateful to have found them. Stuart's team is very professional, incredibly hard working, knowledgeable, and neat. They have great attention to detail. Working on a yard right on a golf course presents logistical issues. They managed these challenges so well, that our property manager is excited to refer them to other homeowners. Stuart worked with us in selecting the most appropriate plant material for the different areas of the garden, walking us through his beautiful farm and explaining the pros and cons of the different choices. I wouldn't say that this company is terrible, but I wouldn't say it was excellent either.l I'm unsure if I would recommend this company either. I worked with Stuart for a quote back in February 2021, since this was a contractor referral. I had to follow up a few times for the numbers, and then once I signed I had to follow up to schedule too. Odd. Once they started it was ok. One of the guys had asked my husband if they could dump dirt behind our fence instead of walking it another100 feet to their truck and being nice, my husband said ok. He didn't know that I had signed a contract with Stuart to haul away the dirt. After I contacted Stuart - they said my husband had agreed. So there was no refund or recalculation of my original contract even though my husband was being considerate. Disappointing. After the job was finished - there wasn't even a walk through to "wrap up" and ask if all things were as we had talked about. The crew just left. The next contact I received was just for payment of balance. No thank you for your business etc etc. - nothing. Overall - I am disappointed with this business who prides "Aloha" because it was not a company that "cared." Being in this similar industry - I felt there was a lack of professionalism. I would proceed with caution. The final work was ok to good. Unfortunately all these other experiences bought down their rating to just average/slightly below average. I would say that if you do work with these guys - there is no need to have Aloha spirit and be kind, because they lack it. Local businesses just aren't the same anymore. read more

This company doesn't do a thorough job, I had a point where the whole side yard of my property was so overgrown that thier own sprinkler technician couldn't walk through to do an assessment. I had to call several times to have them come back to complete services and more often than not the return visit was still incomplete. My house is on a 7000 square food lot and most of it is developed by a huge house, my yard is tiny and my side yard are even smaller, my house should have been no problem to complete. I would not recommend their services to anyone. I gave them two stars instead of one because they finally gave me one month free when I finally stopped being apathetic and left. read more

I hired Aloha Aina for a job to remove our corn plants, ti leaves and lots of weeds. Then place blue rock on the perimeter. They arrived early and the crew were very cordial and ready to work. They chopped and pulled out the plants and weeds so fast. They finished the job so timely! I was very happy with the result. I saw the company truck on the side of the road after spilling gravel from the bed of the truck. The worker moved some stuff around the bed to stop the spill and swept a little of the gravel that piled up. After seeing the extent of the spill, about 500' or so, I called the company. I left a voice message because it was the right thing to do... Hopefully they would go back and clean up the spill. If the spill gets cleaned up, I'll change my review... But after reading some of the other reviews I'm guessing it won't get cleaned and drivers may end up kicking up the gravel and possibly damage theirs or others vehicles In March, the owner responded to my review... That's a start. Then started to justify that the company was not working that day. Take ownership of your company, your personnel, and the actions that takes place. Even if the company was not working that day, personnel that uses a company vehicle for personal use should be held accountable. My observations was not a mistake. I got the name of the company straight from the vehicle that made the mess. The mess was cleaned up by residents. read more

After interviewing several landscaping companies, hired Aloha Aina for a home landscaping and wall construction project. The scope of the project was quite large and consisted of masonry work, removal of 20+ year old palms (and other plants), landscape design, installation of landscaping, irrigation and lighting. My decision was made based on Stuart's knowledge of landscaping design, plant materials, full-service capabilities and commitment to his clientele. Masonry work required the demolition and replacement of an existing CMU wall that was failing. The crew that did the work did an excellent job and the wall looks great. The landscaping portion of the project required the removal of over 30 Areca palms that were 20+ years old. Areca palms are extremely aggressive plants with extensive root systems, so it took a lot of work to remove these palms. After the Areca palms were removed, the area required soil prep, irrigation installation/repair and installation of new landscaping plant material. Over 100 individual plants were installed, and Stu created a design incorporating color, height and depth transforming my yard into an impressive area that now feels like a resort. As part of the scope, they also installed 2 large above ground planter boxes with micro irrigation allowing us to have a very productive garden. We now have tons of fresh lettuce, green onion, peppers, and cilantro right outside our kitchen door. It's been 2 months since the completion of the job. The plants have all settled in and are thriving. Dan was the project manager assigned to my project. He was on top of everything, answered all my questions and kept my informed all along the way. Hired them to revitalize our lawn. They recommended thatching. I decided to hire them although there $$ was one of the higher estimate. The owner spoke a great story about what our lawn would look like after thatching and compost. After the work was completed I never heard from them, so after a while and with no noticeable difference in our lawn, I texted them a few times, which they replied "wait" it will come around. I asked them what else I might need to do, be patient. They also told be that they were really busy on a state of Hawaii job. Great website, great story but unless your a big job $$$, don't expect much follow up. I would not recommend them. Follow up: I was contacted by the owner of Aloha Aina. We had a extremely constructive conversation, he was truly interested in what I had to say and what they could have done better. I originally hired them with the confidence of past performance/reviews and after our conversation I would hire them again. We had our landscaping re-done and the sprinkler system is a nightmare. The sprinkler heads don't pop up, they get clogged with dirt, etc., etc. The plants are dying because of this, the lawn is brown. After several visits to fix the problems, we now need to get a sprinkler repairman in to undo their faulty sprinkler work. Stuart was not reliable either. He overpromised and underdelivered. We made several appointments to meet him at his nursery and he was a no show every time. Instead of formulating a plan, he wanted his workers to show up and start planting. I was informed there would be an additional fee if I wanted a landscape architect. Stuart led us to believe he could design the gardens. I would not recommend his company at all. read more

Wi have never wrote a negative comment on yelp however, I'm hoping this review will help others save their time and hard earned money. We contracted Aloha Aina Landscaping to recover our yard this year. Being limited on funds, we tried to do most of our landscaping ourselves but decided to call in a company for help. Stuart came out to assess our yard and came up with a quote. He assured us that by contracting with him, he would take full responsibility of restoring our yard. Our contract was for 10 weeks, 5 visits all together. They should have been coming every other week. However, some weeks they did not come and I had to call to follow up. I also asked multiple times for quotes on adding plants to our planter but received not one quote. The 10 weeks are up and our front yard looks exactly how it did before we contracted with them. Great experience that my family had with Aloha Aina Landscaping. From the initial walkthrough until completion, Stuart and his workers were very professional and cordial. They did great work and turned our yard from a sore site to a beautiful usable space. As far as what work was done in 5 days: -We made a functional rock garden in the front by the driveway to fix our drainage problem as well as add some curb appeal. -We turned a slopping weed infested side yard, into a nice leveled off play area for the kids with a retaining wall. The rest is a nice patio to entertain guests. -The back and other side of the house was landscaped with some of plants that were provided by Aloha Aina as well as some Hawaiian gingers and plumeria that we bought. -Next to the garage we transformed a weed infested planting bed into a nice gravel area to put potted plants as well as a nice rock garden. I contacted Stuart about getting an estimate for a lawn sprinkler system. He came out and looked at the job. As we talked he looked at the many other projects that needed to be done. They do everything; lawn sprinklers, lawn refurbishment, several rock gardens, an inside water feature, etc. a few days later he provided a pretty detailed work statement estimate which I found to be very reasonable. On the first day of construction Ambrose introduced himself as the boss and he had a lot of help. The communication with Ambrose was several times a day. He was very easy to talk to and had a lot of great recommendations. They did all the work with outstanding quality. They worked their tails off. As the first few days passed it was evident Ambrose had a LOT of talent. All his work was first class and the whole team had pride in there work. The only problem I had was because his gardens we so pretty the rest of my outside flooring looked really bad. I told Ambrose that I had seen some pictures of slate work the company had done. He showed me some other pictures that I thought were awesome. He said that I do that work. I said well I'll see you back here soon. My whole experience was positive. read more

Stu was flexible and made sure to survey our project that same week. We needed to get 10+ sprinklers done around a newly poured stamped concrete sidewalk and backfill in a few places. They were able to give us a very reasonable price and were able to start the very next week. The Aloha Aina team came with 4-5 guys and finished in 1/2 day. It has been over a year since we hired Stu and his crew to do our landscaping, at a cost of just over $11,000. There were 2 areas needing to be done - a big hill that was covered in weeds, and we also wanted a walkway around our house so we wouldn't continually be bringing muddy feet and paws into the house, as it rains a lot at our house. Throughout the process we never once had Stu come by to check out the work that was being done. He came by well after it was done at our request. There were several times we were told they would be coming by - and nobody showed up or called to let us know they were not coming. We would finally have to call them to find out they were not going to show up. The big hill is still beautiful. We could not be happier with the result. The walk way (which costs over $6,400) is a completely different story. We have tried to live with it for over a year and we HATE it. The pavers are too far apart to walk comfortably from step to step. The blue rock that was put in between the pavers is always getting blown up onto the pavers and is very painful if you step on one. We now have to wear slippers when we go outside to protect our feet - and our dogs avoid walking anywhere near them. Plus the pavers get very slippery and have to be power washed regularly for safety reasons. We have finally decided that we are going to have to rip the entire thing out and start over, getting new pavers and spacing them appropriately for walking, and using a different stone for the filler - possibly the jelly pebbles from Geobunga instead of blue rock - as they are smooth and easy on the feet. This was a very expensive disappointment. It would be nice if we felt we could have called Stu and spoken to him about our issues and tried to find a solution, but when everything was done - we did not feel that Stu cared about our job. We have had a problem with storm water flowing into our garage and lanai for 20 years. FINALLY we asked friends who to call regarding this problem. I did not realize it was a Landscaping company. A contractor friend highly recommended Aloha Aina. It was also time for us to replace our degraded gutter system. Stu coordinated all the aspects needed to handle our problem. He had a multi-faceted strategy for routing water in ways I would have never thought of or had the manpower to execute. It is unbelievable how great his solution is working. I'm thrilled.
