I am just coming off my discover dive with Captain Derick and Toby as our guide and have nothing but deep gratitude for my experience. I hardly write reviews but their considerate and meticulous service made for an unforgettable experience. Many companies offer discover scuba lessons in Oahu so I called a few to understand the itinerary before making a decision. I spoke with Toby, he welcomed all questions and gave an honest glimpse of what the experience would be. He was also courteous enough to let me know that they might reschedule our reservation in case they don't have enough people to meet a minimum for the boat. This did happen but the company let me know this promptly well in advance and even followed up to remind me about completing e-learnings etc. Fast forward to the day of the scuba and my mother & I met with Toby and the captain on Diamond T II, their boat along ala moana. The captain did a quick lay down of the safety instructions and Toby walked us through the nuts and bolts of diving - key skills, sign language, etc. The crew split us into parties of two each. The sea was a little choppy and I was feeling a little sea sick so I asked the cap if I go jump in the water till the first pair finished their training and dive and he even gave me snorkeling gear!! This was a great way to kill time and also get a preview of the dive ahead. The cap also encouraged my mother to join me and despite her fear of water, she felt at ease in doing so. This half an hour was unexpectedly enjoyable as we were able to interact with some marine life and my mother felt more comfortable being in water. We then got into our gear, which was labeled, super clean and hygienic, and proceeded to do our training session with Toby in the water. This was the highlight of our experience as jumping in a water can be pretty daunting with heavy gear, especially if you run into tricky problems like water in the mask or your regulator. Despite my mother running into these frequently, Toby was incredibly patient and relentlessly made an effort to do her skill training without rushing her. Unfortunately, she was feeling pretty sea sick and also tired by her time in the water so she decided to pause but Toby and I carried on into the water. We spent a serious amount of time close to the ocean bed, Toby was alert yet let me free roam in the water so I gained some confidence too. I was surprised by how clear the water was and we saw plenty of fish, it was magical. On returning, I found out that my mother got sick on the boat so the cap helped her with a pair of goggles, some jelly, and light humor to alleviate her motion sickness. The crew was highly aware of most passengers feeling sick so they expedited our return to the waterfront. I fail to see how this experience could've been more enjoyable and how this crew could've been more considerate to first time divers. Thank you so much for this!! read more

I have been a PADI certified diver for over 25 years. For the first time in all these years, I am writing a bad review about a PADI Dive Shop. At the end of this month, I am traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii with my wife and five-year-old daughter for vacation. I reached out to "Aloha Scuba Diving Company" (www.divealohascuba.com) a PADI 5-star IDC, inquiring about their dives. We exchanged about 10 emails, where they offered me to do a Wreck Certification. In those emails, we went over the dates, time requirement per day, dives, and cost, among other details. After a lot of negotiation with my family, they allowed me to step away from our time together, to go diving for a couple days. Based on the information Aloha Scuba Diving Company provided in those emails, I coordinated with my wife and scheduled the rest of our vacation (booking activities with my family, rather than going scuba diving by myself). After booking the rest of the activities in our vacation, I emailed Aloha Scuba Diving Company and they asked me to call the shop to make the payment and confirm the booking. Yesterday, I called the shop, and they took my credit card to confirm the booking. After the call, I received emails confirming the booking and notifications from the credit card company confirming the charge. The first thing that happened was that they overcharged my credit card compared to the price they quoted me on the emails (even when during the call I pointed to the specific email with the price they had quoted). I called back and they offered to do a refund for the difference. A few minutes later, the same person I spoke to called me, and told me that all the information that was given to me in our email correspondence was wrong. He told me that there was "some miscommunication" and that the certification required more days, more dives, and that they would need to increase the cost they had quoted. I told them that I had booked my whole vacation around the information they had provided and that they should honor what they told me. The person on the phone said he would talk to the dive shop owner and let me know. After we finished that call, within 2-3 minutes, I received emails cancelling my booked course. I immediately called the shop again to find out what was happening, but they just did not take my calls. I followed up with an email asking for an explanation, but they did not reply (again, all this within minutes of them taking my credit card, confirming the booking and calling me trying to charge more). In all my years of diving, doing so in multiple countries, I had never faced this situation. They clearly do not understand the commitment (cost and time) that going diving requires for a diver traveling with his/her family where they do not dive. I am taking precious time I could spend with my wife and five-year-old daughter, creating memories, for the diving certification. I also planned and booked all other activities around the information they had provided by email. When things are written, there is no room for "miscommunications." The fact that they tried to overcharge me (even when over the phone I pointed to the email where they quoted the price", and after catching their intention to overcharge, they started coming up with these additional days, additional time, additional dive, and additional cost required, is absolutely unacceptable, a deceptive practice (bait-and-switch), and disrespectful to someone that is booking a whole vacation around this activity. I always book my diving with shops that are listed in the PADI site because it gives me the peace of mind and certainty that they are established dive shops that abide to PADI's Quality Management Practices, Safety Guidance, and involving qualified personnel. This is the first time in all these years, and diving in multiple countries, that I find myself in this situation. Do yourself a favor and avoid Aloha Scuba Diving Company at all costs. read more

We had such a great time with Captain Derick and Zoey as our guide scuba diving. They were extremely respectful to the environment and gave us detailed instructions on hand signals prior to our underwater adventure. They were super excited (as was I) to embark on our dive and we more than happy to teach us about the animals that we saw. We visited the sea tiger wreck which is a spectacular dive which I highly recommend any AOW to explore! It's certainly my favorite dive on Oahu. Afterwards, I asked Captain Derick if he had any recommendations on new fins to purchase and he gave me many good recs, asking about my style of kicking and what I want underwater. Very helpful. I had such a fun and safe experience with this company! I enjoyed the outdoor class and really learning how to do everything ourselves with guidance and checks, since I'm a hands on learner. I did the PADI OWD class. My instructor, dive master Erin was so encouraging and patient, even when I couldn't do some skills right away, she gave me clear instructions and helped me throughout the sessions! I enrolled in Discover Scuba because I'm a newbie and my friend is an advanced diver and went on two of their dives. Discover Scuba is a good program, but if you have no prior diving experience it's not for the faint of heart. You'll be required to demonstrate the five basic scuba skills while bobbing in the ocean. If you haven't had prior dive experience -- like me -- it's a lot to expect of yourself. My perspective going into this was that I'd do my best and not get mad at myself if I couldn't do it all. Being the furthest thing from a Navy Seal or similar, I believed I was unprepared to dive. I was surprised/relieved to see ex-military in our group having difficulty with their first dive experience. I add this not as a criticism of them or anyone else, but to help level set the conversation some people have in their heads that invalidate themselves. Machismo has nothing to do with successfully passing the dive tests. You'll pass the tests in the water when you become comfortable with the routine dive actions. As it turns out, I didn't do it all. I couldn't continue with the group, but I was happy to hang out in the water around the boat. From the surface, I could still see fish and sea turtles. I was very happy with my experience and even happier I didn't push myself into a situation that could have ended dangerously. In the end, I'm better prepared for another diving adventure. read more

If you choose to take a class from Aloha Scuba, do so at your own peril. Say goodbye to the people you love and make sure your affairs are in order. I arrived my first day for the confined water part of the class completely ready and confident. I have never scuba dived before but grew up on the ocean and am very comfortable in the water. I surf, own a sailboat and swim, I was raised on the ocean. We spent the morning getting our gear fitted followed by instruction and reviewing what skills / tasks were to be completed during our confined water dive. When I got into the water, the instructor told each of us to put our faces in with the mouthpiece in our mouths in order to get used to the feeling of breathing through a tank. I was immediately uncomfortable and could not understand why. "What's my problem?". "Why am I having so much trouble?" "I feel like I'm drowning." There was so much water in my mask and I tried to tighten the mask but it did not stay tight, I was told it was the right size. I completed the first skill while feeling like I was going to drown and shot straight to the top of the water. I asked the instructor what I was doing wrong and he said he didn't know, I did it perfectly then immediately went up. I said I felt like my mask was too loose and he told me that was not it. The issue was that I was breathing out of my nose and a mask should not be too tight or the fit on the sides of your face will buckle and let in water. Next task, next task, next task, executed while feeling like I was drowning the entire time. After about 2-3 hours, the instructor told me I was completing each task but he could tell I was uncomfortable and suggested I leave the class and book a private lesson. On my way to the dive shop I was trying to figure out what my problem was, why was I feeling like I was drowning, was it in my head, what was I doing wrong, how do I fix it and relayed that same information to the owner when I booked the private at an additional cost of $250 for the following day. The next day I arrived with my own mask, snorkle and fins for the private lesson. Put my face in the water - no problem, asked to perform a required skill and executed it perfectly the first time, every time; no discomfort, no drama, no feeling like I was going to drown. The only time I felt uncomfortable was when I performed the skill of filling the mask with water and then clearing it by blowing out of my nose - the exact same thing I did for 2-3 hours the previous day. The difference between day 1 and day 2 is my mask fit. That a company that makes its living teaching people how to scuba dive has a broken mask in the first place could be that they didn't know yet, no one said anything, I can understand that sort of - but really, who doesn't check their equipment? I cancelled the remaining scheduled boat dives since I was drowning in 10 feet of water with an instructor who was within feet of me. The instructor either could not identify the problem or chose not to fix it. If the instructor and the equipment is that bad that I was drowning in 10 feet of water for 2-3 hours, I would NEVER go miles offshore in 30-60 feet of water with that company. I relayed the information to the owner who refunded everything but the online learning portion of the class and the private lesson. Not refunding the online portion of the class - fair, I completed the course. The private lesson would have been unnecessary had the equipment been in order or if the instructor knew how to tell if someone was drowning. There are several scuba diving companies in Oahu, choose wisely, your life depends on it. read more

At 60 and retiring soon decided to learn to dive. Aloha Scuba was great from the first email and phone call right through the last dive. While making my reservation they answered all my questions and provided advice on what would make my experience better. Instructors Swayze and Rob were excellent giving us a review of key things from the online course aand the equipment. Everything was explained before we suited up and before each exercise for the first days confined water and shore dives. Next day everything was reviewed and briefed again for the two open water dives. It was great to finish the skills just after jumping in for the second dive and then get an underwater guided tour. If you've been following my reviews, you know I only give 5 stars to businesses who deserve them. Responsive I sent out emails to several scuba diving companies near Waikiki beach with 4 very specific questions. And Aloha was the only one who responded within the same day and answered all 4 questions. Knowledgeable I contacted at least 3 people via email and phone, and each person was courteous, friendly, and highly knowledgeable. And I loved that when I was told someone would call me back, someone called me back - the same day! Safety First Justin Tucker, the owner, was extremely accommodating to our needs and strict schedule. I made a LOT of requests, and Justin did his darnedest to satisfy them. The few times when it was clear that something would jeopardize our safety, he patiently explained why it was not a good idea. Best Experience Hints If it hadn't been for the pre-dive discussion Justin had with me on motion sickness, one person probably would not have participated on the day of the dive. Motion sickness is real even for people who never had this issue before on boats. Effective Instructor Aloha has a well-thought-out program. And all the members of our team thought Nick was the most patient, insightful, and effective instructor. Personally, I had difficulty understanding how to breathe until Nick asked, "Linda, do you know to breathe in yoga?" The lightbulb went on in my head at that moment, and everything suddenly made sense. No doubt, our scuba diving experience was a highlight of our 10-day trip. Safe enough for tourists to try scuba diving for the first time but CAUTION!!! Anyone who is an experienced diver, or is looking to do a certification and actually learn something about the sport should steer far away and spend your time and money at one of the many other dive shops on the island, who care about their business and their customers. My dive was rescheduled multiple times, then doing my advanced ow cert. I was rushed through my lessons so the boat could cater to the first time divers who were also aboard. I had a bottom time of 20mins then sat on the boat for over an hour waiting to do my next dive. While I was trying to ask my advanced instructor questions so that I could learn, the captain/owner kept barking orders at my instructor to help with the other group of newbie divers, and I barely had any time to ask questions, despite my unnecessarily long surface interval. When I reached out to the owner letting them know I felt I didn't get the education I was expecting because the boat was completely full of newbies and my instructor was overworked, I received a nasty response from the owner himself. I was told they only have to give me 20mins per lesson and their reputation with PADI is perfect so my opinion doesn't matter. The worst part is that I was buddied up with someone doing their reactivate lesson, while I was doing my advanced. The guy hadn't dove in 20yrs and had no clue how to use his BCD! I ended up saving him from an uncontrolled ascent and spent a lot of time just keeping this newbie alive. While I was paying big money for my AOW cert. Extremely dangerous for the reactivate lesson, and extremely inconsiderate to me, the advanced student. The next day ( it was prepaid. Otherwise I wouldn't have gone again.) I had a new instructor, and when I told him what happened, he seemed sympathetic but then told me that is their standard practice, to pair new people with experienced people so they can help. This might be acceptable during a recreational dive. But not a VERY expensive lesson where I had the expectation of learning something. Heres the sparksnotes version of my review: -Inadequate gear (aside from BCD) -They put 16lbs on me when I requested 10lbs -Advertised as 3 tank dive. I didn't even use 2. -Owner/Cap. Was rude and mistreated his instructors and even yelled at one of them in front of me. -Only care about profits from tourists not teaching scuba. - I did not feel welcome on the boat. - I was paired with a beginner and expected to look after them instead of learn. -Did not get to choose my specialty dives. - I feel I just paid for my AOW card and did not learn anything. -Falsely advertising as a family business -WAY more expensive than alternative dive shops To the owner: If you do not enjoy your work. You can change professions! People are spending their hard earned money to come on your charter and deserve to be treated with respect. This company operates with ZERO Aloha and is an embarrassment to the SCUBA world and this amazing island that you occupy. I made a yelp account just to leave this review because I was so let down. Dec. 26, 2021 -Another epic diving day with Aloha Scuba Diving Company! Originally planned for a two tank wreck dive on the sea tiger and the yo 257, owner Justin called a couple days ahead with a new proposed plan. The weather looked promising for a trip further out to the pinnacles, followed by a wreck dive on the Navy tug Nashua. I had dived the pinnacles and low 257 about 30 years ago, but the other two had been sunk after the last time I was here. I was happy with either one just for the chance to dive again. Justin promised it would be worth it, and the day did not disappoint. Lots of aquarium fish and a huge bait ball, a turtle, two white tip reef sharks, one black tip reef shark, and a couple of heels on the deep dive at the Pinnacle. The we surfaced to change gear and move to the Navy tug. The pelagics began to arrive during the surface interval, as we saw a whale surface not far from the boat. Before we could even get in the water, a huge manta ray came by the boat feeding on the surface and cruised up and down close to us. We were so focused on it that we almost missed the turtle that was swimming along beside him. Once we hit the water, we found another bait ball, and octopus. Dive master Kevin Canada kept everyone together it was great good humor and made sure everyone got a chance to do their own dives. This was my second day with Aloha Scuba, and I remain amazed at how much they go out of their way to make sure that everyone has a good day. On this particular day I had a glitch and almost missed the boat, but Justin refused to leave me behind and made sure that it was a great dive day. read more

Very inflexible company. Bottom line: This company loads up the fine print with policies that are one-sided to protect themselves, but will not budge an inch or a couple minutes for thier customers. Our first issue with the company was that they were going to cancel our trip, because they were unsure that they would book the minimum number of people to make the charter profitable for them. If you have a flexible agenda in Hawaiian, this might be workable for you. Be aware that you may end up getting pushed, and may have work your vacation around this company's convenience. The bigger problem we had is that we had showed up to the marina well before the departure time but a couple minutes later than when they wanted to have the captain's brief. We were communicating with them as we were trying to get there and asked to work with us, but they were completely inflexible that and would not accommodate a few minutes. As a result, we were not able to dive. The company was within the fine print, per se, however, the lack of flexibility to customers is appalling. Especially when they expect flexibility on their side if they fail to book trips that are profitable for them. From other review's I have seen on this company, they like to pull the small business card in thier defense. I'm a small business owner myself, and I would never dream of treating customers the way they do. If they expect flexibility, they should also provide it, within reason. I've worked with other dive operations around the world, and every one of them were laid back very accommodating and flexible, this company claims to be a small business, but treats their customers worse than many profit-driven major corporations. read more

My first interaction with Aloha Scuba Diving was with Brooke over the phone. I left a message asking about scheduling a SCUBA refresher and to my surprise I got a call back as soon as business hours were open. Brooke couldn't have been nicer as she was scheduling me for a refresher SCUBA course. She gave me all the info I needed, such as cost, schedule, and location, and was super patient with my questions. The day of my dive I met with captain Justin and his crew. Great folks, they had their routine down and were organized, which is obviously important. Nick was in charge of conducting my refresher course and did a great job of making me feel comfortable in the water again. He was patient when I had questions and was a chill guy to dive with. TIP: The location of their boat (at the time of this writing) is super convenient if you're staying at the Modern Honolulu hotel. It's probably two minutes from the lobby entrance! read more

Justin's boat is conveniently located in front of The Modern hotel. Nice clean boat, very knowledgeable captain and dive master. His equipments are in top shape. Justin takes care of everything: changing tanks, put your fins, clean your mask with anti fog spray. It is easy to get back on the boat with his very sturdy ladder. He offers amazing fresh pineapple after each dive. Justin even made a detour to Diamond Head on the way back to see some dolphins. Justin pays attention to the smallest details, like giving us a hot towel with tea tree oiled after our dives giving us a spa like experience. An amazing choice if you are looking for more that a regular dove boat. Under water, his keen eye allowed us to appreciate local marine life. read more

Had a great time diving with Aloha Scuba Diving Company. I have wanted to bring my son on a dive trip for years and this was his first time trying SCUBA. His instructor Derek took the time to explain the equipment, teach him skills, and make him comfortable diving in the open water. While my son was learning skills I was able to do a deep dive on the sea tiger wreck with Zoë. We saw Turtles, a small reef shark, eels, huge puffer fish and a ton a tropical fish. Zoë has a great personality and was a pleasure to dive with. She also shared some amazing pictures she took during the dive. Best of all on the second shallow reef dive I got to see my son diving for the first time and get some great pictures and video. He'a hooked on diving and ready to go back to get certified. I had some massive anxiety as the water was a bit choppy during my stay. The team was completely understanding and supportive and made me feel 100% safe. Unethical, not communicative, and unwilling to do the right thing. 0 stars is the appropriate rating. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. If this helps one person not to pick this dive shop, then it will be worth it. I am very disappointed with the communication and ethics of this supposed 5-star Dive Shop. The owner Justin handled things extremely poorly and is not willing to do the right thing. They had lots of operational issues and I would not trust this shop to do the right thing when things go wrong. We all know things can go wrong, but how a business handles it shows their true nature. If you go with this shop, I'm sure majority of time it will go find, but when things go wrong, you will be very disappointed how they respond. Justin will respond that he offered us to dive on our last day within 24 hours of flight home, but you will see that was never an option and he has been unwilling to do the right thing. I will provide grave details here so hopefully you avoid this dive shop and go to plenty of other dive shops. Our incident - I signed up my son for a 5-dive Advance Open Water course for first 2 days of our vacation 7/23 and 7/24. They told me on the first day they couldn't do the 2nd day with employee issues. They also lied about the reasoning as the instructor told us a main employee left and the owner stated he was out due to Covid. Hate how people are using the Covid as an excuse to lie. We told them we could only dive 7/24, 7/25, or 7/26 as 7/27 had another excursion planned and would be within 24 hours of flying home. They signed us up for 7/25. We showed up to the boat and cancelled again on us wasting another day. I reminded them that 7/26 was our last day and they never communicated back until the end of 7/26 saying well we can do one dive at 8 AM and then 2 more at 2:30 PM, which would impact a paid-for excursion and also put us within 24 hours of flying home and take away my entire family's last day on vacation. I asked for a refund for the portion of the course they cancelled on us and have not received that even though the owner indicated on the first day they would make things right if issues happened. So, he lied about that, started to lie in his texts to us trying to wiggle out of the issues and has refused to refund us our money that should be refunded. There are plenty of other dive shops around Honululu, do yourself a favor and go to them. read more

(Read the whole review) This was an 50/50 experience for me. However they get 5 stars. The half that is not good, has nothing to do with the company. I was congested and could not clear my ears on the way down so I didn't get to go all the way down. I had to snorkel, while the group went underneath. So keep that in mind. Make sure you are not congested before you go if you can. However, every single person who work there that day (Kevin, Ryan, and Justin) made sure I had as fun of an experience as I could! Which is why they get 5 stars. Those dudes are funny as hell one and cool to top is off. They are worth the experience fore sure. Try and go when they go! read more

Perfect Location, amazing vibes crew supper chill yet professional and their exit and entry procedure is one of the best I have experienced. Dive locations and accommodations if you give Justin advance notice he will make it happen. And in the end that makes for an awesome awesome trip. Really satisfied with our two wreck dive trip. I'm glad to have found that the Wilikina store's hours are posted on Yelp as the website hours hadn't been updated, and several times I made the drive up there to find the store closed. The company seems to be in a transition period since the opening of their new Ala Moana area store and the increased demand for boat dives they are operating. Thus sometimes the Wilikina store is closed. They do have some good retails supplies at Wilikina, and the staff is knowledgeable. It does take a week or so for customer tank fills, but the fill is accurate. Best to call first to see if they are open. read more
