This surf school is run by professional surfer Chava Greenlee and his big personality comes through all aspects of the school. Chava goes out of his way to make his surf lessons better than the rest. First, the technique that he uses is clearly well-thought out and effective for beginners. Second, he and his instructors are there for the students (not to surf between students's waves). He provides water shoes for each student. Finally, his lessons on Poipu Beach are at a great break that is very good for beginners to learn. While on Kauai I noticed other surf schools doing all of these wrong, but not Aloha Surf Lessons. If you take your lesson early in your stay, be sure to come back and rent a board from Aloha and practice. Had a great experience with Aloha Surf! I signed up by myself and the instructors were all so awesome! One of the highlights of my trip. My instructor was great. He really make me feel comfortable especially it being my first time and by myself. I asked him to take a picture and video for me and he was super cool about it. After my lesson Chava was gracious enough to take me around to a couple stops before dropping me off back at the hotel. He is so proud of this Island and rightfully so. I took two lessons with Aloha Surf one with Christian and the other with Chava. They were both fantastic instructors and genuinely nice people who were happy to share their enthusiasm for surfing along with their incredible knowledge with their students. I've taken many surf lessons and this was by far and away the best. They gave me many tips that made a big difference. Highly recommended. The company recently moved locations so I had a hard time finding them. I am very glad I did. They are now located just East of the Marriot resort up a path between the hotel and some larger rental properties. Christian was my instructor. He is as local as they come and is living a dream life as a professional surfer. He descretly gave a quick ground school away from the crouds and then to the water. He described his surf life growing up and touring. He was patient, repectful and helped me understand the harmony and flow of the waves as well as the technical side. Chava was my instructor was very helpful and I really enjoyed my first surf lesson with him. He was very patient. However, the staff managing the operations is really below standards. When I arrived before 9 AM, there was nobody at the lesson meeting point. After waiting for 10 minutes, I asked the person at the pool desk what was going on. This person just mentioned that the instructor was late and that we had to wait. She was unsmiling and plain rude. If this person is removed from customer facing tasks, there is hope that the experience will be more pleasant. read more

Aloha Surf was superb and offer a great experience. Christian, my instructor, and the entire staff were very accommodating and patient. I had not surfed before and they took the time necessary and offered a lot of support. The location at Poipu Beach was absolutely beautiful and the water was a very comfortable temperature. I really appreciate the fact that all of their instructors are Kauai surfers, so they definitely know the waves and are complete safety conscience. Christian was able to give me a great deal of insight about finding the correct wave and the best way to get up on the board with absolutely no pressure. We got lost on the way to the lessons and they were very patient in working with me to get me to the right location. I really want to go back and try it again. read more

I'm not sure if this is the right business, but let's hope so-- the stand next to the shopping center at Kalapaki beach. I was very nervous about surfing but I promised my boyfriend I'd give it a shot. Turns out Kyle was a really reassuring and effective instructor; he knew a lot about that beach and had been observing the waves all morning. We went over general ocean/surfing safety and technique basics on the beach before going in, and when I was already tired from just paddling out he towed me the rest of the way (and then back from every wave I caught). He gave encouraging feedback on technique tips to try in the next wave and was a pleasure to talk to. I ended up surfing four waves in about an hour on the water. I was not even expecting to succeed at one! I am, however, glad I did this toward the end of the trip so I wouldn't be sore the rest of it. read more

While the first person had a connection to the business I don't and I concur. Our instructor was very nice and I managed to catch a few waves during the lesson but none during the practice. We only had 3 people in our lesson so we were lucky. Honestly the best part of the lesson is having someone pushing you into the good waves. Not sure I will ever get any better, but this was certainly enough to get me started. About 20 min on dry land and 40 min in ocean. No matter what you do on land you will likely forget in on your first couple of waves. read more

While on the islands for business we hopped over to Kauai for a couple days before returning to the mainland. We called Aloha Surf lessons once we made it to the island (based on our concierge's recommendation) and were able to sign up for the following morning! I was a little nervous about surfing, but Poipu beach was not intimidating at all. Our class was small, only two other people, and our instructor, Lena, was wonderful! He gave very clear instructions and we were all up on our boards pretty quickly during the lesson (haha which he seemed surprised by). Lena was very encouraging and gave a lot of helpful feedback especially when my husband was having a tough time staying up as the lesson went on. After the instruction he told us to surf as long as we'd like and just bring our boards and rash guards (which was aweeesome to borrow!) back when we were done. We took a small break, grabbed some water in the Sheraton? hotel thats nearby, reapplied sunscreen and headed back out. It's definitely more difficult when you don't have someone telling you which waves to grab and when to start paddling, but all of us were able to catch a few waves on our own. We ended up staying out so late it overlapped with Lena's next surf lesson but he kept shouting feedback our way and helping us all out. We returned our boards when we were too tired to keep going, Lena and another instructor, Ikaika, gave us some great lunch recommendation and we ate and napped the afternoon away :) Overall it was a great experience and I'd recommend this company to anyone interested in learning to surf!! read more

Terrible operation! Our family booked a lesson with Aloha Surf Lessons, setting aside our morning for the session. After happily taking our money, no instructor ever even showed up. No phone call to cancel, change or explain, not even a follow up to apologize for their incompetence. Their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing. The whole family went surfing today! Chava was our instructor and he was great. Another instructor was there also, sorry I can't remember his name. Both were so patient and everyone was able to get up and ride the waves. We were given water shoes to wear what a life saver !! Ok I pooped out after about four runs! But that just allowed me to get some great photos. I would highly recommend this company. We even got a great recommendation for lunch and enjoyed Puka dogs and fresh lemonade. We asked the locals and everyone said Aloha was the best and safest business to get surfing lessons - they were right! Chava taught my 13 year old son and 11 year old daughter, they caught wave after wave, cruising right by the people taking lessons from other companies. Those people started coming up to Chava and asking advice! Chava did a great job balancing his instruction with keeping the kids safe. Whooooo-hooooo!!! We had such a great surf lesson with Aloha Surf. Lena was our instructor and he had me and my 9 year old son catching waves in no time at all. When you arrive for your lesson you're set up with water shoes, a rash guard, and a board. After some on-land instruction, your paddling out into the ocean. The location is great--easy waves that are good for beginners, but still offering a shot of adrenaline when the waves toss you off your board. I think I drank 83 gallons of ocean water, but other than that this was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Thanks Lena and Aloha Surf! Can't wait to come back soon! read more

I took a semi-private lesson with my girlfriend, so it was just the two of us. It was my first time surfing, and her second. Our instructor was awesome; he was very relaxed, patient, and very encouraging despite my many wipeouts (my fault, not his...I have terrible balance). Great and patient surf instruction. Worth every penny. I've never had a surf lesson before, I was nervous that I wasn't going to catch on and the lesson would be a waste, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of my vacation in Poipu. Even though I only got up on the board twice and my muscles were sore the next day, it felt good to know that I had knowledgable teachers and that I was doing the best I could for the time I had! I did a one on one 2 hr lesson at 11am with Ikaika, he was very clear, patient, and encouraging. If you put in the work, he would too! If you're a beginner like I am, I recommend a one on one session with him, too many people might be to difficult to concentrate and get the attention a novice surfer needs. My Husband and I had the best experience with out Aloha Surf instructor, Ikaika. He was very hands-on and made sure we had premium time in the water and up on the board. He was fantastic. We were up on the board a lot because he knew just the right waves for us to try. He was only supposed to be in the water with us for 60 minutes but actually spent 90 minutes with us.
