I saw (on Instagram) that Aloha Tofu Factory was celebrating their 75th Anniversary by selling Tofu at the factory for 75 cents a block! Wow! What a great deal! However, I didn't want to stand in line with the crowd. Indeed it is as they celebrate their 75th anniversary and what a generous way than to offer their with a limit of 5 per person Soft and Firm tofu for $.75 each and as a tofu lover I just had to try my luck as the location for Aloha Tofu is in Kalihi on a little street Akepo Ln and they do have a few parking stalls for convenience as there's just about no stalls in the surrounding area. As the cars start piling in I did get lucky as a couple of cars was leaving. The shop entrance is on the left side of the building and to no surprise there was a giant line though the staff was working hard to keep the vibe moving as one grabbed bags that many had brought and took our order as mine was four soft tofu and if you read their instagram if you show them you follow them you get a gift which was a fan and sticker. Found out from the morning news that Aloha Tofu was celebrating their 75th anniversary...they were selling their soft and firm block of tofu for $.75 each. I was planning to pick up Okara (soy pulp) so I looked at my husband and said "Let's go!" When we arrived, there wasn't any parking in their small lot so I was dropped off and stood in a long line with around 40 to 50 people in the hot sun...I need an umbrella! While waiting, 2 people were leaving the parking lot so I called my husband. He made it just in time to get a stall. Yay, I got my umbrella! Stood in hot sun with hardly any breeze for over an hour, bought a total of 10 soft and firm tofu and 2 lbs. of Okara. Was it worth it? Yup! We eat Aloha Tofu's tofu almost every night with either shoyu or Nametake Mushroom so will enjoy this for 3 weeks, saved about $25 and will be able to make my Okara patties! I know the workers had a hectic day with non-stop orders but they were still pleasant, helpful and smiling just before closing...awesome! Since the mid-1980s, we've attended Honolulu's Okinawan Festival annually except during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, and this year, because I'm busily healing from total knee replacement surgery. However, our attendance doesn't stop our appetites from enjoying our favorite Okinawan dishes and rich culture with my husband's late sister's in-laws. My culinary interest in Okinawan food grew after I met one of my former culinary arts professors, who was Okinawan. I learned that Okinawan cuisine is a unique blend of traditional ingredients, including tropical fruits from the Ryukyu Kingdom, and cultural cooking techniques influenced by trade with China, as well as the post-World War II Americanization. However, we became more aware of and intrigued by the iconic Okinawan cultural staple, Jimami tofu, after seeing a HIFF movie in 2017. Luckily, Aloha Tofu had a retail store near the theaters, so we rushed over to sample it, and we were hooked! Even my late sister's-in-laws didn't know about the seasonal (during the Okinawan Festival) availability of Aloha Tofu Factory's jimami tofu. They said they only got to taste it during family trips to Okinawa or Japan. So, what is Jimami tofu? Unlike tofu, which is made from soybeans, jimami tofu gets its nutty flavor from peanuts. The peanuts are soaked in water and then blended, resulting in a nut milk. The nut milk is then heated and thickened with a starch (unlike the process of making regular tofu) and allowed to cool until it gets a soft and jiggly consistency. Aloha Tofu Factory serves the jimami tofu with a savory, thickened soy sauce, brown sugar, and hondashi sauce, which enhances the peanut flavor. During our last trips to Japan, we discovered the peanut tofu in Kagoshima, known as "dakkisho tofu," which was topped with either salty umeboshi (salty pickled plums) or soy sauce. In Nagasaki, the dakkisho tofu was topped with yuzu zest, fruit, or miso paste. I think the dakkisho tofu could be served as a dessert with a sweetened soy sauce or blackened sugar syrup and grated ginger. The Japanese peanut tofu or dakkisho tofu seemed to be more refined and softer than the Okinawan jimami tofu. Still, Aloha Tofu Factory sells its Jimami tofu in disposable paper ramekins at $5 each. During the run of the Okinawan Festival, a discount is offered, and it's best to pre-order this specialty, as it is only made on certain days. Since I pre-ordered the jimami tofu, I also ordered a large (64 oz) tub of yudofu 湯豆腐 or soft hot tofu, which I likened to the Chinese silken tofu pudding dessert 豆腐花. Although the yudofu's consistency wasn't as custard-like as I expected, it was still a great substitute. I split the container with my eldest sister, who also served it chilled with fresh berries with a ginger-infused simple syrup. The factory worker who retrieved my pre-order was friendly and kindly offered me recipe cards. I asked him how he usually eats the yudofu, and he surprised me by saying he eats it warm, accompanied by ponzu sauce, finely chopped green onions, grated radish, or ginger. I surprised him by saying I'm eating it chilled with fresh fruits. Anyway, the factory was easy to locate down a one-street (Akepo Lane), the service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the tofu. Nice local tofu shop, a tofu lovers paradise! It's located in a not so nice area, but hey I think that's keeping the influencers away. The hours are a bit short as they basically open 7am to noon or even less on certain days. They have tofu in various forms: fried, pudding, dried, shapes, milk, even soy sauce. We got a bit of everything and probably went a bit overboard but it worked in the end. The tofu pieces are actually bigger than they appear in the menu pictures. Parking was pretty easy since there's some marked spots just as you turn in from the street. The factory itself is exposed and you can see off in the distance the various tofu processes. They also had little gifts and other non food items which we opted to get some soy soaps! So cool and a big highlight of our Oahu trip! read more

Love doing my shopping @ Aloha Tofu Factory. They have so many of my favorite home food products. And they are so convenient as they are located right off of N.King Street on Akepo Lane. Onside parking in their private lot. When I pulled in this morning I was the only one in the lot. When I left there was a car on each side of mine. That's how popular shopping @ the tofu factory is! My dear nephew who makes his own, turned me onto the delicious and healthy eating of natto. Aloha Tofu makes their own and... I just can't get enough of this fresh goodness! Sold in a two pack for just over $3. Best place to get tofu and tofu products. Next week is Chinese new year and noticed there is a special on the fried tofu (aka: aburage) which is commonly put into Chinese new years jai. When I couldn't find aburage at any grocery store on December 30th, which admittedly is too close to New Years, I was able to call and reserve a large bag here. Aloha Tofu is always a winner with me. I bought several buckets of yudofu to share at work during a time when there's mostly sweet things. Everyone was super happy with the addition of the dashi-shoyu, green onions, goma, and a garlic chili condiment. Also, I got a couple of natto to share with my favorite natto eaters, and several containers of firm tofu that were expiring soon. After watching several YouTube videos about freezing the tofu to change to consistency, I tried it, and now there is always some form of non-animal protein whenever I cook! I gave the soy milk I bought to my daughter -- she loves it, and it reminds me of breakfast in Singapore where they have bags of hot soy milk ready for the office workers to grab and go. Their tofu is widely available around the island but the okara and all natural soy milk is only available here. It's totally worth it to make a trip for all their delicious extra goodies! Came here with one mission: fresh soy milk! Me and hubby have been searching for fresh soy milk, the real deal not the American kine. When I talked about this with coworkers about this one of them casually said "just go to aloha tofu factory " . And everyone seem to know about and love this place! Look at all the great reviews here! When we came here for the first time we were not so sure if we were at the right place because it's located in a narrow alley with no obvious storefront or sign. There's a small parking lot which aso looked like a loading dock so we weren't sure if we could park there. But whatever, for the soy milk! When we walked into the side entrance there's a small area for customers to order their food, maybe 3 feet x 6 feet? And from there you can see the huge factory inside with workers swiftly moving things around, operating those gigantic machines. What a fascinating scene! Anyway we got our half gallon soy milk for $6.35. It's more expensive than silk soy milk but the quality worth every extra dollar we pay. Now they have 2 more loyal customers who for sure will come back regularly! Business hours: 7am-12pm on Sun-Tues, Thurs and Fri: 7-10:30am on Wed and Sat. Fun little place to try out if you're a local or just visiting. If you like tofu, this place makes a lot of the tofu for the local area. They'll sell you fresh soymilk and also fresh "flower tofu" that are pretty tasty and well done. My only gripe is I wish they'd sweeten their fresh soymilk (which they don't do) or give you some syrup for your "dofu - fa" aka "flower tofu" but they call it "yudofu" You don't get a tour or anything, but when you walk in , you can see them all working on making their products not too far away. If they made some things for the consumers to drink/eat right at the moment they'd really drive in some more business. Texture and the flavor of the soymilk/yudofu were really good though. read more

Have been waiting patiently for Aloha Tofu Factory to reopen to the public. We like to patronize local whenever we can and when the local product is tastier than the competition it's a win-win for business and us. We're a fan of oboro tofu and often order it when we go to Izakaya Matsuri. When we saw the oboro tofu offered at Don Quijote (DQ) we were anxious to try it. Wife also wanted to try Aloha Tofu's natto as she was told by friends that it was quite tasty and matched well against the Japanese brands. Knowing that our family were fans of tofu, I called to preorder the oboro tofu and natto. Lady who answered the phone said that Aloha Tofu's version of oboro tofu was called yudofu and I said, "what the heck, I'll take 2-1/2 scoops of their yudofu. I had seen the little plastic cups of yudofu at DQ and I figured we would scarf down those 2 half scoops quickly. When I got there at 7:00 am when they opened (see photo of their COVID hours) I found street parking in front of the factory. There were already 3 people in line and it looked like everyone had preordered their tofu products. I noticed that the 1/2 scoop of yudofu was $7 which I thought was kinda steep but I was willing to roll the dice and see if their yudofu was as good as the oboro tofu we enjoyed at Matsuri. In fact, I told the lady, "give me 2 more half scoops" so we'd have tofu for the grandkids when they came over the house after school. When the lady brought out my order I was stunned. Each of the 2-half scoop servings where packaged in what looked like 1/2 gallon tubs...and I had bought 2 of those tubs! Long story short, the tofu was silky and tasty and was still very warm like it was packaged fresh. Btw, yudofu is not available on Wednesdays and Saturdays so keep that in mind. Oh, and the natto? According to my wife it was great! Gave some away to friends and family and bought more from DQ this week. If you haven't tried Aloha Tofu's yudofu and you like soft tofu give it a try either at DQ or at Aloha Tofu's factory. Just be careful how much you order LOL! read more

Aloha Tofu is amazing. I have vague VAGUE memories of coming here as a kid and bringing a stockpot - our family would fill up on the fresh soybean milk and bring it home for breakfast. Fast forward 25 plus years or so, and I finally make it out during the pandemic since I am doing food therapy HARD. I am not disappointed. I always am a little shocked by how much I end up spending on tofu products every time I leave, lol. But the firm tofu is so fresh and delicious, and the soybean milk is soooo ultra silky and delicious. It is LIGHTYEARS away from that tofu water you get in boxes, but let it be known that it has a distinct flavor, and it doesn't go with everything (looking at you, weird-tasting soy milk milk tea...). Their natto is not my favorite, but I am a frequent buyer of the firm, silken, and aburage tofu, as well as the soy milk. The staff is super nice and multiple times they've thrown in a few "less than perfect" blocks for me after making a large purchase. COVID precautions: they limit the number of people that can be at the register, and they later set up so you purchase from outside, with the cashier behind a plastic barrier. read more

The natto here is also very good, the only natto my kids will eat. We also get their soy milk in the half gallon which comes in a metallic bag and super boiling hot straight out of the vat. Any old school business with a loyal customer base--me included! But nostalgia is not the only reason why they've been staying in business for over 70 years. Their tofu and soy products are THE BEST on the island! My favorites include their soymilk and fresh scooped silken tofu with brown sugar syrup (aka. tofu fa, tofu pudding). The soy milk is so easy to drink and has a strong soy flavor and not watery. The silken tofu is also soft and smooth that you literally do not have to chew much at all. My family and I have been coming to Aloha Tofu Factory to get our fresh tofu for as long as I can remember. It's on a small street in Dillingham, almost right behind the complex that has Jollibee. The workers are all super friendly and make conversation with us while getting us our fresh scoops of tofu. I see them constantly trying out new recipes for sale with their tofu, like tofu mousses and almond tofu, although I have yet to try them. We always get their fresh scooped tofu, a few pieces of their atsuage tofu, and their aburaage, all of which we can never seem to buy enough of! read more

Stopped by here on the way to the airport from Waikiki. Parking is less than desirable as the parking lot is small and there were large vans parked there. We manage to maneuver into one of the spots. The entrance is off to the left side of the building. It was warm in the factory, but that's expected. There are some tofu Musubi on the counter and some items for sale on a board. They also have a case of almond tofu and other items for sale. I asked about a tour and they said tours needed to be booked ahead of time and it's $5/pp and is only offered for groups of 5 or more. She told me it's usually for schools and it would be about an hour. You are able to see the workers in the factory making and packaging tofu. We ordered oboro tofu ($2 for a small) and some Yakidofu ($2.30 for 2). I cracked the oboro tofu and took a bite of the freshest tofu I've had. It was creamy and wonderful. The soy sauce based package was perfect sauce to go with it! The Yakidofu was cold but HUGE. It was the size of my palm. The outside was firm and the inside was soft. I ate one and was full afterwards. Overall, it was an interesting experience looking into a factory and rewarding to treat yourself to some fresh tofu. Oh my this place has been on my list forever! I finally got to try the local made tofu and other products by Aloha Tofu Factory. First the customer service is really nice. Warm and friendly aunties working here. I bought a silk tofu, Age tofu, almond pudding and sesame musubi. My favorite is sesame musubi. It has lots of beans inside and the sesame oil really gives a lot of flavor....I wish they used a little less oil tho. Tofu was awesome needless to say. I especially appreciate their Agetofu because it was big and cheap! I use it a lot in cooking. I was not a big fan of their almond pudding. The sweetness is just right, however the texture was too hard. I did not buy at the factory but I bought their natto beans at the Schofiled comissary and it was so delicious. It is expensive but I cannot go back to previously frozen natto at Don Quijote anymore. I am so happy to finally try this place and will be back for more! read more

Always fun to visit this little factory. I am glad that they are open, despite the odd times. Only one customer can go inside and order, but the guy let my family and I (there were three of us) inside since we were family. Bought natto and okara. I find that their natto is different than the natto that is frozen and shipped from Japan or wherever it's shipped from. It's not as "stringy" as regular natto, which is better for people who don't really like the "strings". I love natto anyway, so it doesn't really bother me. Their natto does cost more than the natto at the store, but every once in awhile it is great to get some either from the factory or if you see it in the grocery store. Inside the label of the natto was funny to find, especially how you can add natto in ice cream, in a martini, and guacamole! I might try the guacamole, but ice cream and in a martini? Crazy. But their okara you can't get it anywhere else in stores only at the factory because okara doesn't last long and most of the okara is given to pigs, so it's great to buy a bag as well especially how big the bag is. Small tofu factory with a walk up window to place your order. The staff was super kind and helped us quickly get what we wanted - soft tofu, firm tofu, soy milk, and dou hua (tofu pudding). I loved everything we got here. The soy milk was very strong so I used it as a base for smoothly and it was so creamy and added a bunch of nutrients. The tofu here is incredible. The tofu texture just seemed so much more smooth and light. Dou Hua was great but smallest container sold was still quite large. This place is a Honolulu gem! read more

Great find from years ago--while working nearby, I had been to the small restaurant storefront at Iwilei that closed, and then found out they had a factory store! We really like the fresh soy milk (they will kindly give out ice for the drive home!) and the tofu dessert they sometimes sell (think sweet custard). -Come early for the best selection as items run out quickly (their tofu poke and desserts are pretty good--***From owner Paul, they no longer offer ready made items but might likely share a recipe if asked. Will be sure to check in on my next visit!***) -Be prepared for a parking lot with some potholes, so look out as you drive in/out -Bringing your own reusable bag is helpful! LOVE, LOVE, LOOOOVE!!! They have hands down the best tofu on the island. If you go to the factory, the yudofu is a must! We also regularly get the soy milk to make yuba and silken tofu. Sooooo good! The staff is always friendly and helpful too! read more
