Long story short, the proprietor of this little vegetable stand has impressed me for years. Remember when there was a shock video of rodent problems at the Kekaulike Market? I will never forget he was on the video saying that many vendors don't clean up their stalls at the end of the day. He always packed his stuff away in fridges so no night time visitors could have a feast. So soon after I ventured down there to see for myself. I've been going ever since. He has smaller then market sized green onions for a buck. Bought a decent sized bag of bok choy for under $5, and my fav is his bean sprouts, that no one from the public touches. None of the veggies have unusable leaves or parts. You might find a place a little cheaper, but by the time you peel off the junk stuff, it works out in price. Mahalo You II

Whaat? You Market II? Where's its original location? Oh, no matter, this Asian green grocer has quite the fresh selection to choose from. We found nice bunches of scallions (green onions), bitter melon, squash, long eggplant, string beans, okra and even winged beans aka Goa beans. With our purchase in tow, we rushed home to make a vegetable dish with the addition of our roast pork from Nam Fong and shrimp sauce. Hm, can you guess what dish I made? Hint: Philippines. We'll be back for more as we enjoy eating vegetables - fresh or raw or cooked in various cultural styles.

There's also a huge selection of fresh and pre dried vegan and vegetarian meat (fully vegan) and tofu from Taiwan, Vietnam and Aloha Tofu (Hawaii local fresh tofu). There's only 2 places on the island that I know of that you can get these vegan Asian meats, which is so delicious, healthy with nature soy,m fibers, and has far less sodium and preservatives than the American beyond meat veg options. (Though I enjoy those to make western dishes from time to time) The customer service here is very nice. They also have reasonable prices for candies and snacks but they don't have a lot of stock so if you see something you like, you should buy it because it will probably not be around the next time you go. She kept saying that she wanted the "small kind". I have no idea why... Easier to cut up? We ended up at U & M Produce because she used to come here with her late husband (RIP Mr. Wong). U & M Produce is located on King Street where we had parked for free on an early Sunday morning. Mrs. Wong found a pre-packaged bag of three Chinese cabbage and was really happy. She paid cash because it was a reasonable price. The cashier was very nice and let me take a photo of the cabbages on the scale. LOL! The store was so crowded - UHG! I didn't want to go inside. This store is located next to the Yat Tung Noodle Factory, across Oahu Market. The store doesn't have the brightest of lighting, but it's pretty well organized and you can tell it wants to showcase the produce. U&M offers a lot of vegetables, produce, and dry and packaged goods that you won't find at other stores. They also prepackaged a lot of its vegetables and even precut some of the big squashes or pineapples so customers don't need to purchase a giant size squash. The owner is a really nice man, and he picks up fresh produce almost everyday that's flown here directly from California. His staff are very hardworking and they're all friendly. You know, I've never asked him for U&M stands for. I just always think "you and me" lol. I'll ask him next time.

The sourcing is thoughtful, the seasonal varieties are genuinely special and if you care about Japanese rice, this place deserves its reputation. The service does not. If you've ever shopped with kids that age, you know you're already working overtime keeping little hands off displays, making sure nothing gets broken, trying to be respectful of the space. Not once did anyone greet us. No hello. No welcome. No acknowledgment that we'd even walked through the door. When I asked what I thought was a perfectly reasonable question whether I should buy the limited seasonal rice or the variety I'd enjoyed on a previous visit the answer felt dismissive, almost like I was wasting their time. If you're building a business around expertise, helping customers understand the differences shouldn't feel like pulling teeth. That's the entire point of having knowledgeable staff. Yes, the parking is inconvenient. Yes, the prices are premium. I can live with both because the product is genuinely excellent. What I can't understand is why a store built around craftsmanship seems so indifferent to hospitality. I still bought the rice because it's that good. I'm not sure the exact reason but maybe it's because the outside shopping area is "exposed" - - the heat and exhaust from the heavy traffic on King Street play a factor? I've also noticed the change of staff and owners recently. The middle-aged female Asian cashier used to be at my go-to place in Kekaulike Market and she now works or owns this stand. If you're looking for a great selection with bargains and don't mind average or below-average quality, this is the place for you. In the outdoor shopping area near the cashier, against the wall you will find "discounted" items where fruits and veggies are pre-bagged for quick sale. They're still in pretty good condition but will have to be consumed within a day or two. This place is CASH and does accept EBT cards.
