It's a tucked-away b&B in the suburbs of Philly that offers beautiful scenery with a well-kept garden, an inground pool, and fresh breakfast each morning! Such a wonderful place run by warm and personable hosts! Alpenhof has a mountain lodge-like atmosphere throughout the home, complete with thick wooden beams, plentiful earth tones, and loads of old photos and fantastic art on the walls. The engaging decor includes a wide variety of kitschy objects from many places worldwide. During our several-day stay, I didn't get tired of looking around and finding new curiosities. Outside, the B&B is tucked onto a forested and winding hillside, surrounding you with green leaves and views of the sky. It's easy to forget that you're less than 30 minutes away from downtown Philadelphia. And there's plenty of parking in the B&B's lot. Our room was a good size, but it was better for sleeping in and going out. It might have been a bit small if we planned on spending significant time just hanging out in the room as there wasn't much space around the very comfortable bed and the one chair, which was a plush and comfortable reading chair. The room also had an armoire, TV, and a short hall off of which the bathroom was located. (The rooms do vary in size, so again, that's just my view of the room we were in.) The breakfasts here are excellent and include what may be the best scones I've ever had. (I'm delayed in writing my review by several months, but the memory of those scones is still vivid. YUM!!!) Breakfast is served mainly in a kitsch-filled dining room, that's bright from high ceilings and sliding doors at one end of the room. The dining room table - a heavy wood table, suiting the atmosphere - 'only' seats 8 though, so if the table's full you may have to wait or choose to eat in one of the nearby rooms on a tray; when the weather's nice, there's more seating outside. read more

Very unique b&b! Roland & Ang, the hosts, were so sweet, attentive & welcoming. Breakfast was ordered via a menu each morning cooked fresh to order. Beds/rooms were comfy and roomy. The best part was all the artifacts covering every surface of the walls each with its own unique story. My favorite little memory was coming in late one night and just sitting in the common living room in quiet and enjoying the peaceful summer night. There was a beautiful pool, we did not get to use however due to scheduling and chilly weather. They do have pups so I felt right at home since we were missing our 2 back home. First time at a bed and breakfast and I'm not sure another will live up to this experience! Media is in a wooded area of PA but a short drive to the city or the main line. Alpenhof B&B is a hidden gem! We came here for a weekend with friends to celebrate a bridal shower in the area, and I cannot say enough nice things about this place. First off, we were absolutely stunned by how uniquely decorated both the inside and the outside were. This property was originally a barn, turned into a home, and eventually b&b. Every nook and cranny has an ornate decoration whether it be a custom lamp from Morocco, vintage furniture, ancient swords, or wooden table carved by the owner himself. Each room had its own theme and decorations, which was truly spectacular. The property was very clean, and we felt safe given the covid situation. There were three dogs on the property, but they were extremely friendly and usually stayed in the main house. The owner/host Roland could not have been more gracious and accommodating. The breakfast he served that his wife cooked was delicious, from the home the home made scones, omelets, french toast and more. We also spent one of the days swimming by the pool which was very beautiful with plenty of tables and lounge chairs. The property is located down the road from a park, and just a five minute drive to the downtown area. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in the area. read more

This last visit to the Philadelphia area, I decided to look around for alternative places to stay. I chose Alpenhof because of all the high reviews. It turns out that staying at Alpenhof was such an opportune decision. We loved the quiet, the cleanliness, the garden, the unique decor and rugs. But we really think that Roland was such an outstanding host; he shared his family stories. He and the staff prepared and served breakfast every morning. He is a 'natural' for this job! We stayed at the Alpenhof B&B in their Rock Garden Cottage, and loved every minute of it! This cottage is separate from the main house (where all the other guest rooms are located), and is a great choice for accommodation especially if you're looking to stay a few days, in a blissfully quiet spot. We were greeted, with due consideration for social distancing requirements of course, by Roland and 3 very well-behaved dogs. (Lola was certainly the leader of the pack and our favorite, but we appreciated Caesar's attempts at trying to show us a better parking spot.) As for the property and the cottage, none of the photos truly do them justice. You'll know you made the right choice, as soon as you see it in person. The property itself is pristine and the cottage is an eclectic mix of a range of different styles that remind you of different places - an exposed rock facade, accent walls and carpets of bright red hues, intricate carvings and wall decor, as well as louvered doors for that cabin-by-the-sea feel. The rooms are all very well lit, and in the day time you'll be spoiled for choice on which curtains and windows to open to let all of that glorious sunshine in. In addition to the stately living room, and the extremely comfortable bedroom, we were very pleased with the full size kitchen. The cottage also comes with 1.5 (extremely clean) bathrooms, and the full bathroom features a rain shower head. The cottage features a private deck with patio chairs, for a great view of the pool - which you can access by walking down stairs hewn from rock. Due to Covid restrictions, the communal dining experience for breakfast was on pause, but Roland kindly offered to bring us breakfast to the cottage's deck every morning. The breakfast is made to order, and was delicious - and we highly recommend it. Roland and Anh run a terrific bed and breakfast, and we will definitely be visiting and picking the Rock Garden Cottage again. If you're in the area, let yourselves be tempted to give some of the hotel chains a miss, and treat yourselves to Alpenhof instead! read more

What a wonderful find! Sadly, we only needed accommodations for one night...we would have loved to stay longer! We stayed in the Master Suite. The bed was sooo comfy. Everything was spotless and very welcoming and the decor was enticing. Big thirsty towels in the private bath and a lovely view of the sunrise from our window. Breakfast was yummy! We ordered veggie omelet, blueberry pancakes and eggs, with bacon between us; there were warm blueberry muffins, fresh brewed coffee and fruit to greet us as we sat... You should love dogs - the two resident pups are a presence - but we loved them! We will be back! :) read more

Wow, I lucked out big time! I had to be in Philadelphia for business and the entire city was booked up for some reason: I couldn't find a hotel ANYWHERE 2 weeks out, even by the airport. Freaking out, a colleague advised me to look for a bed and breakfast, and while there were none available for a reasonable price in Center City, I stumbled upon this gem, Alpenhof. I am SO glad I did!! Judy (one of the owners) was beyond accommodating and very professional, not always a given with small, family run places. I had to call several times to make sure I had all my travel details ironed out and she answered the phone every time and was patient and warm. The grounds and home itself are immaculate and gorgeous, and the linens smelled wonderful--like home. And breakfast! It was delightful and custom made. Take away point: while I am planning to return with Hubband for some R&R, this B&B was also a perfect stay for business. Judy had me out the door in a timely manner and it was easy peasy to get into Center City from there with a rental car (if you're so inclined). The commuter rail is also nearby. read more

This is my third or fourth stay at Alpenhof and it's gotten better and better each time! Talk about a unique B&B experience, this is a real jewel! Not too far from downtown Philly and around the corner from Swarthmore, this converted stone barn is a world unto itself!! The proprietors are fun, intelligent, and beyond gracious. The friendliness of the staff was great and the breakfast was phenomenal. Our accommodations were close to the location we were visiting, and the ambiance was quiet and peaceful. I've worked at a B&B in the past, and admit I might be biased, but there were a few things that bothered me about Alpenhof. For one, the dogs that live on the property were in the dining room at breakfast, licking us as we were served (yuck). Dog hair covered the rug in the dining room and the dogs also jumped on us a few different times. In the cottage in which we stayed, there were dirty dishes left in the oven. IN THE OVEN! It looked as if maybe the previous visitors left the dishes, but it's pretty disgusting to find old crab dungress among other things. Needless to say, I washed someone else's dishes that night. We also had some ant problems. While I am aware that ants are prevalent in the summer months, especially around wooded areas, I never expect to find them in my bed, which I did at Alpenhof. Media is a great little area, and there are few lodging options. In all, I thought the accommodations were pricey for the lack of cleanliness we experienced. I am FINE spending $200 and up per night if the place is spotless, and this was a far cry from spotless. read more

I needed a place to stay at the last minute on a Thursday night, and since my brother stayed her a few weeks prior, I called Roland, the owner, to see if he had an available room. He did. The only one available, however, was the master suite. I decided to treat myself, and I took it. It's hard to find words to describe it, but I will try: beautiful, comfortable, unique, and amazing. The entire property is gorgeous. There are beautiful trees and plants and unique sculptures everywhere you look. I cannot recommend this place enough. In addition to the beauty of the building and property, the bed was comfortable, and the place was quiet. I was traveling by myself and felt safe and relaxed. The breakfast was delicious! I had french toast and eggs and sausage (Breakfast is my favorite meal.) There were scones and fruit as well if I wanted them. Roland and his wife have three dogs, too. As an animal lover that was a huge plus for me, but not everyone likes dogs, so fair warning. I suggest you treat yourself to this unique and pleasant gem at least once. read more

And this is just the breakfast table! The Alpenhof is a lovely B and B! We had the Grand Master Suite so we had a bed for our college aged son and it work out great. The stone walls and the architecture are very old world but not in any negative sense. It feels like a lodge in Europe. The art work and the gardens are wonderful - the pottery is amazing. The house pups (especially Lola) are friendly and provide a nice homey feel. The beds and pillows are wonderful. I cannot say enough! Roland is an excellent host! We will be back for sure! read more

This is a lovely bed and breakfast! My family (me, my mom, and my dad) stayed here over last Memorial Day weekend and we were so very pleased. CLEANLINESS. This place is so well kept! The rooms were very tidy with fresh linens and no dust. The common spaces were also welcoming and neat. BREAKFAST. The breakfast is just so delectable! I made the mistake of over-stuffing myself every morning! I just couldn't say "no" to the fresh baked goods, the eggs and pancakes made-to-order, the fresh fruit, the piping hot tea. My suggestion is that, if you're staying here, you should plan for a light lunch, because it'll be hard to stay away from the beautiful bounty in the morning. DECOR. Absolutely lovely and warm decor. The house is filled with unique furniture and antiques from all over the world. I'd say it's magically got both a cozy feel and a museum feel to it. The place is full of tasteful art, interesting furniture, and warm lighting throughout every room. SERVICE. They are just lovely -- so friendly, so helpful, so informative. All the "house rules" were made perfectly clear to us from the beginning. The staff members were so warm, flexible, and easily accessible! COST. For some, this place may be pricey, but I think this place is well worth the price. So, it's certainly not the most affordable place to crash, but the pricing is comparable to other places like this in the greater metro area. And if you go for a hotel, you will not get that lovely personal touch. It really did feel like "home away from home" for the weekend that we stayed there. GETTING THERE. The place is probably not accessible by any public transit. We rented a car at the airport and drove into the township. The ride was easy enough; we had GPS in the car to help guide us there. If you are debating between this place and one of those chain hotels, I suggest that you definitely go for this place. Highly recommended! read more

The Alpenhof is a magic place. They are not rooms, but experiences, decorated with hand-stenciled borders and art works from around the world. The highpoint, of course, are the hosts Ang and Roland - gracious, accommodating, thoughtful, world-traveled, oozing with creativity, and who obviously love extending an extravagant hospitality to their guests. After a few days with them, my wife left saying "I wish we could live here and Ang could be my best friend!" Everything Roland touches - from his handmade life-edge dining table to his best-ever omelets - shines with glowing accomplishment. And the amazing thing, their rooms cost about the same or less than a simple 2-star hotel room. Why would you ever go anywhere else? We have stayed a number of times and so have other guests we have met at the dining table. The Alpenhof is not a traveler's means to an end, but an end in itself. Go there just to experience it. Roland greeted us warmly when we drove up, helped with our luggage and gave us the tour. It kept getting better and better. After traveling just ten minutes from home, my husband and I stayed here for two nights on our regular anniversary trip away from kids and jobs. What a lovely and welcoming retreat! We stayed at the rock garden cottage, and really appreciated the privacy and full-service accommodations (full kitchen, living room, private deck, and a full-sized front deck.) Breakfast by Judy was unexpectedly generous, as she made whatever we could seemingly desire: from omelets to pancakes to waffles, with fresh fruit and delicious coffee. This is a review that I am reluctant to write because I don't want anybody else to find out about this place. We stayed in the cottage and it was so relaxing. We felt like we were in Vermont, not 25 minutes outside of Philly. The bed was a Tempur-Pedic and it felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. We really liked it that we could bring our beagle for a $25 pet fee. Last but not least, the breakfast was awesome. This place was such a find. The location is perfect for exploring Philadelphia, the Main Line, and the Brandywine Valley. The inn itself is a converted barn that is thoughtfully decorated and quite eclectic. The breakfast was also first rate. We had never been to a B&B with so many delicious choices. Best of all is Roland, our host. He is as gracious as they come, and even took the trouble to send back a cell phone we had left in our room. Set near Ridley Creek State Park, one of my favorite parks, the Alpenhof is a magical haven for the weary traveler, with splendid, uniquely appointed rooms and a fire warming the large yet cozy living room. My mother-in-law and her daughter stayed in the Master Suite, and my daughter and I had Heidi's room. After our introductory tour of the Alpenhof, I learned my daughter, who had just flown in from Germany, was stranded at the airport. I had no way to contact her. Judy and Roland helped me to have her paged. And Roland offered to go to the airport to pick her up, relieving me of driving through rush hour traffic in an unfamiliar city after already driving 10 hours that day. I went along to find my daughter. Roland was amazingly soothing on the ride back from the airport, calming my tired and upset daughter. My daughter asked to sleep in the living room on the couch. And she asked for permission to raid the kitchen when she got hungry in the middle of the night. Our hosts were very gracious and granted her every wish. They only asked that she close the doors to the living room at night so as to keep the dogs from licking her face in the morning. The accommodations were superlative. The accommodating host and hostess were even better. read more

Stayed at Alpenhof a few weeks ago in the Master Suite. Judy met us outside and was so warm and welcoming. The house is a beautiful, very old converted stone barn nestled above a lovely pond (that happens to be home to a blue heron). The accommodations were just charming. Antiques abound, and the mattresses and bedding are deluxe and comfortable. Lots of seating and places to hang your clothes were a plus. The huge bathroom with walk-in shower, the tastefully scented soaps and hair products, and the fluffy towels were a real treat. Media is a bustling town with lots of restaurant choices, and it's a short drive from the B&B into the center of town. We were there to do genealogical research at the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College, and the Alpenhof is an easy 15-20 minute drive from there. We met Roland and his dogs in the morning, and they were all welcoming and friendly as well. At breakfast, Judy asked us what we would like--French toast, eggs, sausage, etc--all was made to order and absolutely delicious. Coffee was fresh, delicious and plentiful. There appeared to be a pool below our Master Suite deck--perhaps we'll make our next genealogical research trip during the summer! All in all an excellent experience-smart, Roland and Judy are smart, down-to-earth proprietors who know how to do it right. (Thanks SO much-we'll be back.) read more

My partner and I were out of towners for a wedding in Media and stumbled upon this gem of a place online. We arrived beaten up from traveling and instantly felt at home. Roland and Judy were both very welcoming and accommodating and gave us plenty of privacy. The house is breathtakingly beautiful (pics don't do it justice), it has a castle feel to it without being stuffy, it's quiet, you could tell they pay attention to detail, the shower in Otto's room was ah-mazing and the breakfast was delicious. My family and I were coming into Philly for a funeral, and booked rooms at the Alpenhof a few days prior. When we arrived we were met in the driveway by the owner, who informed us that there was no power, no hot water, etc. Now I don't fault them for not having power, that was obviously out of their control. I was however very upset to learn that they had clients scheduled for rooms and did not contact us (or another group from Ohio, apparently) to warn them of this situation before arrival. The owners excuse was that because they don't have power, they couldn't call anyone--this is 2018, do you not have a cell phone? Is there not a nearby coffee place that has Wifi? I found it to be very bad customer service, especially since we then had to spend another hour trying to locate a place to stay, with most places booked up at this point, and ended up having to pay for a heinously expensive suite at the Marriott because it was the only thing we could find nearby that had availability and we could possibly get to and get checked in, etc., before the funeral services that evening. Very disappointed that no effort was made to better communicate with us. Only reason it gets two stars is because it looked beautiful from the outside and the dogs were nice. read more
