Burger with shave ham, swiss, and o-rings.

My first job out of college was in La Crosse, a few decades ago, and our after work spot was way up on top of the bluffs that ring La Crosse, and I guess it's always been called the Alpine Inn, since it opened in the 20s, but we called it "Uncle Miltie's" after the affable proprietor. Milt had a way of getting you completely loaded when you weren't looking. In winter, the poison was a "Snowshoe Grog," equal parts of Peppermint Schnapps and Brandy. Yeah, I know. Made all the more perilous while trying to navigate your way back down the winding road to town. So that was about forty years ago. . I was rolling through La Crosse last week and decided to stop at Milt's. Milt's long gone, but the Alpine Inn rocks on, and has a full food menu, as opposed to back in my day when eats consisted of pickled eggs and cheese popcorn. I went with a 1/3 pound beef burger, topped with slivered ham and swiss, and accompanied by beer battered rings. It was a good burger. The rings were OK, not spectacular. $9.25. There is some video poker and pull tabs these days. The Alpine Inn operates on a cash only basis. There's a massive outdoor deck for pleasant weather embibers. and a field for volleyball or whatever. A lot of people apparently bike up the bluff, or come up by some means of transport and hike down. Bully for them. Alpine Inn's menu includes appetizers, soups, salad, burgers, sandwiches and pizza. I hear the grilled cheese is a winner. Must be cheese from those happy cows in Wisconsin. I guess most people would call the Alpine a "dive." I call it "homey."

Distance to Bar - A long drive up a winding road up a bluff After living in "The Twilight Zone" of friendliness and Midwestern hospitality, the Alpine Inn was a big rock in the shoe. I really have no idea why this place always has a packed parking lot. Drinks are not the cheapest. It's not a convenient location. The decor is, well, non existent, the food was fried and just like any other bar I have been to in the area. The bloody mary's came with beef jerky, cheese, a green olive and a pickle. Yes, you read right, beef jerky and cheese. The wait staff was rude and unlikable. There are a couple of sand volleyball courts with a bar in between. I'm not sure when they use it. They get one star for serving booze. There is a beautiful view, but they do not deserve a star for that, Mother Nature does. I won't be back.

What an awesome little hidden bar on the way up to Grandad Bluff. They have nightly specials and a decent tap selection. What you will really like is the hidden volleyball court tucked in the back, butting up against a steep bluff. You wouldn't expect this at all, and there's even a second bar out back.

Service was fast, wings were piping hot, beer was ice cold. Ten out of ten would agree!

Cute place with nice scenery. Our food took forever. But everything was hot and it was ok. Next time I would just go in for a drink only.

They wouldn't let me farm. I usually farm. Life is easier, simpler. There's more money in farming, alas, no farming.

Great little bar tucked into a corner on the road to the bluff. Could be called a dive bar- friendly and welcoming.

I like the "neighborhood atmosphere" of this place, and the food is usually quite good. Today 7-24-26, I went in as a sole customer at approximately 2:00 PM -- a non-busy time -- and sat at a 2 person table a few feet from the bar. I was ignored for approx. 17 minutes. I was starting to wonder if they perhaps only did bar service at that time, but no signs were posted, and no one said a word to me. Furthermore, a few other customers, came in at this point & also sat at tables. Just before I was ready to walk out (20 minutes of being ignored is the limit) , the barkeep called over to ask if a server had seen me. I responded "No" and she said she'd let her know I was there. Nothing. After about 5-6 more minutes, the barkeep herself came & took my order which included food & a drink. The food, (their Friday fish), as stated before, was great. Absolutely no server checked on me during the 50 minutes between my food being served, and the time I left, to see if I needed anything. The barkeep called over to me once, about 5 minutes after my food arrived, to ask if I needed anything. At one point, in addition to the barkeep, I counted 3 other employees going in & out of the back room, and two of them were actively serving -- other patrons. Patrons at other tables--couples, and gentlemen -- were checked on numerous times during this period. After I had finished eating, I sat with my remaining food to one side, and an empty drink, for approx 25 minutes. Finally a server stopped literally 5-6 feet from my table -- didn't even actually come to my table-- & called over "Do you need anything?" I suspect my "infuriated vibes" were starting to permeate the premises at that point. I responded that I needed a box & my tab. Had I been approached even 20 minutes earlier, I probably would have ordered another drink. Honestly, this was disappointing in a place I really have had warm thoughts on. Will it stop me from going in again? Probably not... the food is good, and that's primarily what I'm there for. But my strategy will likely be different next time. 'Not as a quiet, polite & reserved female customer. I suppose I'll need to "belly up to the bar" along with the rest of the dudes.

I came late and they didn't have seating at the main table so I sat next to the group on the side. Waitstaff ignored me, ended up going to the bar and bartender wanted me to wait for staff to add me to their ticket. Got a little confusing and I ended up just not ordering food. I'd like to try it again without such a large group (10+me).
