Party of four for breakfast. Two had omelets, one had a bagel, one had pancakes. Not impressive. Service was great. This has a diner feel, parking out back, and the service was good. The food however, was kind of cold like it had been sitting waiting. My mushroom/cheese omelet was a bit overcooked, and cheese distribution seemed like an afterthought. Hash browns seemed like some mashed potatoes flipped once. The coffee? Like Folgers. There is a "Greek bread" offered with is thick white bread with sesame seeds, and sort of odd, not bad, not interesting. There are other diner-like menu items, but in thinking about it, IHoP does this so much better and at about the same price. We had higher hopes. read more

My sister and I dropped in for basic food (turkey sandwich and a cheeseburger). The service was quick and accommodating. The waitresses were incredibly friendly and it was genuine. Today, I will review the exceptional service I received today. I ordered my usual with a chocolate shake to go. Now... I don't know if I had "exhausted and hungry" written on my face or if he just didn't want to waste the ice cream, but he came up to me with my shake and the remnants of the shake in the metal tin, threw a straw in there and gave it to me. I started this review the last time I was here with my dad, but the experience I just had changed my mind forever. As my dad always reminds me, the food might bring us in-- but it's the service that brings us back. I think it's the liver and onions he likes. I just went in as a driver to pick up an order. The restaurant was almost empty and there were many people working. The waitresses were downright insulting to me. They apparently only pretend to value your life if there is a possibility of a tip. Then they shake those 70 year old butts and giggle. I suddenly wish that I could retroactively un-tip the whole staff. Seriously. I will never go in there again. The order I had been assigned was sitting on the counter. The wait staff was ignoring me and then once they deigned to acknowledge me-- they were verbally abusive and condescending. If you can't treat me professionally when I am working as a delivery partner, you don't get any more of my business. They told me to take off my mask and stop yelling at them. I had never once raised my voice. I had asked if I might go ahead and read the bag and take it (I could see the name from two feet away...and I had been standing there for a bit being told that I had to wait for my turn--remember: almost empty.) Real old school authentic dinner with great food and service. The menu is big with various options that sound delicious. I had the skirt steak and eggs with toast and hash browns. The steak was very flavorful and did not need any sauce. I never had hash browns prepared like these before but they were very good and seasoned very well. It's okay. The prices are insanely high for the quantity and quality of food. This is a diner. The kind you'd see in those 80's movies, so I'm not getting the $20+ breakfast from the whole vibe of the place. The variety of options on their menu is good. There's so much to choose from there will be something for everyone. The corn beef hash is very salty. I don't know that I would ever try it again. The rent in the area is high so I can see why their stuff is a bit overpriced for the quality. I think they can improve by not overcooking everything. I think most people in the area prefer things cooked where they are still soft and moist. Overall, I would order again but I would keep it simple some eggs and coffee. We ate outside and they were able to accommodate a large group of people. It didn't feel too hot as there was a tent covering almost the whole back patio so that was great. I got the strawberry fruit waffle and it was good but would've preferred maybe a heavier whipped cream. They did give me extra like I wanted which was awesome! The burgers come with a large serving of crinkle cut fries as a side so I would say those are a much better value, but you won't be able to finish it probably unless you skipped a meal that day or take some leftovers home. With most people getting a burger and fries, we were able to have 6 people eat lunch for $110 with tax and tip so I would say that's pretty reasonable. Seems like a fine place to get lunch with family where you know it's a safe bet there'll be something everyone likes, I just wouldn't expect any unique flavors. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite. I was greeted as I walked in and seated immediately. It wasn't too crowded but it was busy. The place gives off a diner ambiance. You can sit at the counter or opt for a table. A server came with water and I was asked if I wanted coffee. I said yes. I ordered a veggie skillet with pancakes. The coffee was not the best it tasted burnt/old and they don't have any non dairy creamer options. My food was brought out quickly and hot. The skillet was tasty, but the pancakes needed a bit more love. I've been here a few times, however it's my first visit in years. I'm not sure if they have new kitchen staff or management, but it definitely wasn't what I was used to. Not sure I'll be back anytime soon. read more

The waitress made sure she was attentive and continue to stop by our table to check on us. So far, Al's didn't disappoint me on my first visit. The food is good. Great diner with fast service! I usually go for the standard two egg breakfast with grits, scrambled eggs and a biscuit (instead of the toast or pancake). The grits are good. I usually had some butter and bacon and they warm me up nice. I also love a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice! My daughter loves the pancakes, sausage, and fried egg. My wife enjoys the tuna melt with fries. I wish they were open later for dinner! read more

There's a dependable breakfast/brunch place near Harlem and Madison in Oak Park. Guess what? The name this diner is also "Al." I dragged hubby along for a breakfast date since he took a tired-of-work sick day. What I had at Al's this morning was nothing but solid, nourishing, and good American-style breakfast. The "Al's chicken and waffle" was well-executed. The maple syrup that came with was warm and free from coagulation. They gave me a plenty of syrup and I used the remainder of that for my coffee. I probably had a bit of Canadian in me without having to realize it! Next time I should order one of the skillets. Hubby had the "southwestern skillet" and it was a very awesome-looking one! I believe there are ample opportunities for me to come back to Al's. Their service was quick and friendly. By the way, the coffee re-fills were super on-point. I hardly reached the bottom of my mug before getting topped off every single time. My experience at Al's this morning was positive. I'm a big fan of the people that work here... and we used to go here for years- but not anymore. My brother ordered the beef barely soup and thought he saw bugs in the soup. We called the manager over for him to look into the soup and see what was in it. He said that the meat is so finely shredded, that it could look like it was just the meat. My brother took a picture with his high resolution camera and you could clearly see wings! They are like some type of gnats. There were what seemed like hundreds in the soup. My brother went back to show them the picture and they agreed to throw away the rest of the soup... This is a family run business and we loved supporting them through the years- but we hated that this happened. I hope they continue to do better in 2018! read more

If you order Greek bread instead of white, wheat, or rye...upcharge, though it's offered in the same list of breads. Used to be across the street years ago back in the days when they dozed but never closed. Not so much of that anymore - but it is a nice place for breakfast or lunch. I went here because a guy I work with said it was pretty good. And he was right. I got a Denver Omelette and while most omelettes I've had have been a tad larger, this one had good flavor mostly due to the ham they use. On the other hand, they give you a plethora of hash browns. Would rather see a little more potato / egg "balance". The service I had was spot on - overall a decent place for breakfast OR lunch at anytime. I saw a Philly Cheesesteak being served up at 8:30AM. I've been a regular patron of Al's Grill since it was a small diner on the adjacent corner of it's current location. It has been such a staple in our household that the thought of reviewing it never crossed my mind. (If you happen to visit during the weekend rush, it speaks for itself.) There is no need for convoluted prose to convey it's decency. This is a solid breakfast joint with a competent staff and consistently delicious food. Do yourself a favor and don't pass this spot up. In February 2022, I ordered a veggie omelette from Al's Grill located around the 7000 W. Madison street. It was made clear to the waitress that I do not want cheese on it. When the omelette came to the table, it had pork and extra cheese. I told the waitress that she gave me the wrong plate. She said," this is what you ordered." I told her that I have not eaten pork over 30 years and I do not eat cheese. Again she said," that's what you ordered." I ask to speak to the manager (Al) who is the owner. He came to the table and said, " I believe whatever my waitress said you ordered." I ended up paying for a meal that I did not eat because Al the owner was a complete anal. Al's response and action to this situation lets me know the integrity of Al's Grill. The employees can only be as strong as the employer. When the employer is weak the employees will be weak also. Anyways, this situation really took me to a higher level and changed my life! I have not eaten at no restaurants since this incident and I have saved lots of money! Whatever I want to eat, I will go to a search app, find the recipe and cook it. My omelettes and other foods are cooked to perfection using only healthy ingredients. In doing so, I have lost 60lbs since February. I look like a totally different person and feel great! Thanks Al for being the anal that you are. read more
