I've been here twice now both times with my Mom. She chose this place a while ago for lunch. I got the chicken tenders dinner. It was OK but I wasn't a big fan of the brand of dipping sauce that they carry. Onion rings are delicious & I believe that they are homemade. It's an easy process as you go up to the counter to place your food & drink order. Visible menu on display with prices. You pay, get a number and can go inside & seat yourself. They will call out your number & bring your food to your table. On my first visit here staff was attentive and someone had come by to check on how we were doing & asked us if we needed anything. Not on this trip and it was busier on my 1st visit this year. My mom was craving whole belly clams & wanted to come here. We came around 4pm on a Tuesday. I decided I was going to get a lobster roll as I haven't had one on my visit while here in NH and I was ok with paying the crazy price of $29.99 and boy was I disappointed!! The texture of the lobster was odd.....it was soft, smooth & slippery. I've never had a lobster roll where the meat tasted like this before. Maybe it was super fresh? IDK but the lobster was lacking in the taste department. I got it with mayo. There was absolutely no spices/seasonings in it, no celery for that crunch, nothing. It was the worst lobster roll that I've ever had even the mayo didn't have any taste & I had asked for extra mayo. Oh & the bun, what was that?? One side looked like a hot dog roll & the other side looked like the butt end of a loaf of bread. It was barely even toasted on one side if that. Thank God for the onion rings as they were delicious & I knew that as I had them on my first visit. I told my mom how disappointed I was in their lobster roll and only ate 1/2 of it but due to the cost of it I had asked for a container to take the uneaten 1/2 home. I planned on adding some flavor to it with spices & some more mayo. Well the next day I decided I wasn't interested in it and offered it to my mom who gladly accepted. I asked her if she wanted me to put some seasoning in it & she said "no" well she agreed with me that it had NO flavor to it & was just as disappointed as I was. So unfortunately I don't recommend the lobster roll with mayo unless you like it to lack flavor. This last visit no one came to check on us & I saw 4 different girls in the eating area that worked there. My reasons for the 3 stars: 1. Prices 2. No flavor in the lobster roll, no hot dog bun, nor a toasted bun 3. Gross dipping sauce for your chicken tenders 4. Service in the inside seating area is a hit or miss I don't see myself coming back here unless I'm giving my mom a ride for her to get something to eat. She did enjoy her whole belly clams but even those were expensive. I know seafood can be pricey but I feel like their prices are not competitive with other places that serve seafood. This definitely isn't a fancy place so don't expect it to be. Food is served on paper, you get a little package with plastic silverware & a napkin. Staff aren't waiting on you. Very, very surprised. I'm pretty particular when it comes to lobster because it's so easy to overcook, so I'm usually skeptical about ordering a lobster roll. My boyfriend and I shared the Connecticut-style lobster roll. While it wasn't overflowing with lobster especially for $29.99 it was cooked perfectly. That's not something I say often, so that's a huge compliment. I've had lobster rolls in Maine for about the same price that were much more generously filled, but the quality of the lobster here was excellent. My biggest critique would be the bun. I think this would be even better on a non-toasted bun or with a different style of roll altogether. The bun took away from what was otherwise a fantastic lobster roll. I also ordered the clam chowder. The flavor was really good, and it tasted homemade and fresh. My only complaint is that I hardly found any clams or if they were there, they were very small and blended into the soup. It also had a slight cheesy flavor that I wasn't expecting. I'd just recommend adding more clams because the base itself was delicious. The French fries were decent, and you could tell they were cooked in clean oil, which I always appreciate. The coleslaw, however, was watery and just wasn't for me. As for the atmosphere, it has a fun, old-school seafood shack vibe. You order outside, grab your food, then bring it inside to eat, and the staff clears your table afterward, which was a nice touch. The only downside was that the air conditioning appeared to be leaking in the middle of the dining room. Water dripped onto my boyfriend and even onto one of the waitresses. I'm sure it was just a maintenance issue, but it wasn't the most pleasant dining experience and did make me question how sanitary it was. Overall, I left pleasantly surprised. Despite a few areas that could be improved, the perfectly cooked Connecticut-style lobster roll is absolutely something I'd order again, and that's saying a lot coming from someone who's very picky about lobster. read more

The seafood was fresh here! Not the five star hot butter lobster roll I was hoping for but it was still yummy. The lobster quantity was ok. The roll was filled but I've had much more generous portions elsewhere for $25.99. Note the lobster roll comes with fries. We also ordered side orders of fried clam strips ($15.99), fried onion rings, and a kids meal of chicken tenders with fries. The clam strips were juicy and so fresh! If there were a Hall of Fame for small fried seafood joints that never miss, Al's Seafood would already have a plaque, a laminated menu, and a line out the door - they already have a chalk menu, and during the summer, a wait for a table so we're almost there! This place is absurdly consistent. The portions are always generous, the quality is never caught lacking, and the dining room is spotless in that reassuring someone actually cares way. The staff (and it's always the same people that are there, which is cool in itself that there's no noticeable turnover in the staff) is friendly without being fake about it... efficient, pleasant, and clearly proud of what they're serving from fryers behind the soda fountains. Let's talk food, because wow. That's why you're reading this. The fried shrimp are so good that my wife (who does not like seafood) actively loves them. That alone should be printed on the menu. I've only known her to eat fried shrimp when the breading weighs more than the shrimp itself (which is not the case here). The tartar sauce is the best in North America. It's my crack. If I drank it through a straw (a bit too thick), that straw would be called a crack pipe. I literally smile writing about this tartar sauce. I will not be taking questions at this time. The "regular" fries are exactly what fries should be: crisp, fluffy, salty perfection. And the onion rings? Peak "fried seafood place" onion rings... golden, crunchy, and unapologetically doing their job, not tempura style, but old school Weathervane "fried seafood style" onion rings that you can sub in instead of fries on plates/boats for a small upcharge. Even the bathrooms are clean, which sounds like a throwaway detail until you realize how rare that is and how much it says about the place. We love it so much that we'll happily drive 40 minutes each way to eat there - in winter - because that's what you do when a place never lets you down. And despite the sign saying Al's Seafood, we tell everyone it's called "Big Al's Seafood" Not because that's the name, but because that's the energy this place has... It's not trendy. This place is not bad. It is more reasonable price than the Beach Plum. beach Plum charge me almost $85 for 5 oz lobster roll and dinner plate of fried clams. They didn't even give me a lot. They didn't fill to top of roll. Lobster roll did not look like 5 0z. Al's Seafood did. Filled it over the roll. I order clams here. The cost I total was $61 so it was cheaper. Only thing I didn't like was this tip BS. I'm ordering to go not dining in. Why am I tipping. What are they going to not bag it for me if I did. I spent most of my week in New Hampshire sitting still thanks to a wicked case of vertigo, so when it finally came time to hit up a seafood spot near the water I was ready to go. I stopped by Al's Seafood with my parents at around noon on a Friday and this place was packed. Unlike most restaurants, here you place your order at the front window located outside, then you head inside and grab a table, then the food is brought to you wherever you sit and it's time to eat. The restaurant itself is straight out of a photo book called "New England" and I loved it. It's a big open room that looks exactly how a seafood place near the Atlantic Ocean should look and the staff is super friendly on top of it, checking 2/3 boxes for atmosphere and staff, so how was the food? I ended up ordering the lazy man lobster which came with two rolls and french fries, and my parents ordered a large onion ring for the table to split. I only ate a few of the onion rings as the breading was really not up my ally, just not the flavour I shoot for with onion rings, while the french fries were a classic steak style with solid flavour that tasted pretty good. The lobster itself was perfect, trimmed of the stuff I can't eat and just a pile of lobster meat ready to get devoured. There was a decent amount of lobster meat here and it all tasted very good. Overall, Al's Seafood is a North Hampton staple and a place I would absolutely visit again in the future. The staff here was friendly, the restaurant was well decorated and looked great, and the food was fantastic as well. If you are looking for the seafood treatment in New Hampshire, this place is going to do the trick. read more

Al's seafood on Rt 1 in North Hampton, NH has been on my list for a while, and did not disappoint. Hot crispy fish and chips served in just a few minutes. At Al's you order at the window and then go inside to select your seat. I took takeout, so I can't review the restaurant, but if the inside is as nice as the service outside GO! The counterperson had no problem explaining the menu, and answered promptly when asked what the fish and chips was...haddock, and even added that they served it two different ways, as a fillet or as fish bits. I chose the fillet and the basket size. Reasonably priced and a perfect lunch portion. I'll be back and must try the clams. Everyone says they are sweet and plump. read more

I can't understand how this restaurant has so many good reviews! After reading them we decided to eat here while on vacation. Who would have thought you could get such terrible seafood in a coastal town. As you can see from the pictures, the fried shrimp are the size of salad shrimp and the clams were cooked into rubber bands. So terrible! Ok. To start, I have been coming to Al's since 2010. Approximately. I love their fried seafood- scallops, lobster, fish and chips, but also love their grilled halibut. I got that today, along with the twice baked potato, which was excellent. We also got a lobster roll because everyone had been posting about them lately. Honestly, we hated it. It had an aftertaste, lots of shells, and was on a cold bun, not toasted. Very disappointing. Sorry guys. I also got lobster stew recently and it also had a lot of shells in it, and I threw it away. Al's should always be on your list when visiting Hampton Beach. The fish chowder is full of white fish and has a cream thin creamy base to it. But it's the native baby shrimp that keeps us coming back, they are delicious. And unlike many of the area seafood places, you can still feed a family of four for about a hundred bucks. It was my first visit to Als and I can't say I won't ever try it again someday but if I do I will certainly not be getting the lobster roll! I'm rather biased when it comes to lobster as I grew up on the coast of Cape Cod diving and catching lobsters all summer so I know all too well what fresh lobster is like. It has a certain texture and taste to it when it's fresh. What I just had at Als was absolutely 100% previously frozen claw and knuckle meat. It was mushy, watery, and tasteless. It was also not that big for what it cost. It was definitely not what I was expecting from a place like this. Come on Als! You can do better! My daughter and I stopped in at Al's Seafood for lunch. We split a seafood platter which included shrimp, scollops, clams, haddock and choice of onion rings or fries. This was the freshest and tastiest seafood that I have ever eaten. Light batter on the fried seafood and no frying oil. Perfect onion rings and real homage French fries. The fried fish and lobster rolls were great. Counter/table bussing service was good as well. Things were going great until we opened and tried the lobster stew. This was the reason for the 3 stars. The lobster stew was basically heavy cream, seafood stock, and 3 small pieces of claw meat. No flavor whatsoever. It just tasted like heavy cream. Usually there is sherry in lobster bisque or stew. The sherry was not in this batch of stew. It was also lacking salt and pepper. Maybe it was an off day or something but this was the worst lobster stew I have ever had. Do not be deterred by the line outside to take your order. They are always busy because they have a great selection of items and excellent food. They can do a carry away order or you can sit inside. The hours for the restaurant tend to be longer than the market hours -- so I'd recommend that you call to confirm the hours for the restaurant. A friend recommended the place and I've been going there for a few years now. Huge selection of items and have not had a problem with anything that we've ordered. They accommodate food allergies which is huge!! They offer bottled Coke products but you are better off ordering the fountain soda which comes with refills. They do have a small selection of wine to choose from, if you want alcohol. The restaurant has a selection of tables, normal booths and a few 2 top tables. It is loud but not so much that you can't have a conversation without raising your voice. They are really all about the seafood. The market prices are fair. You can get items such as salmon prepared in a variety of ways. It is a great place to get fresh, high quality seafood. I enjoy the steamed mussels and the shrimp cocktail. My friend thoroughly enjoys the fried seafood platter which comes in a couple sizes. It is outstanding. This is a place for fresh, quality seafood in a very relaxed atmosphere. You place your order at the window and you take one of open tables inside and wait for number to be called and then someone will bring your food over to the table. You get your own beverages at the fountain machine. The food is on disposable plates or bowls. So you are coming for the great food at reasonable prices and not for a romantic night out. If you leave not stuffed, it is not their fault. They have a good portion size for If you drive by, don't be fooled by the line of people (it moves quickly) and don't let the casual appearance fool you into thinking they are not serving a high quality product. Only reservation I have in writing this review is that the place will get even busier if more people know about this gem!!! read more
