Baked stuffed Haddock with Lobster Sauce
    Tracy B.

Have been driving by this place for years and thought it was truly a German Restaurant, and then at times even thought it was closed & they just left the sign up... But was out with just Mom and no kids one day so we stopped in. The menus is decent, lots of options from all cuisines. We started with some apps, and then got 2 Seafood/Fish plates and they were GOOD... Drinks were good, service was good. Will definitely go back when looking for a nicer seafood meal again in the area!

    Mommy tranquilizer!

Visit Date: May 26, 2019 My family and I have been making an annual trip to NH to see some members of my father's family. We came to Dinnerhorn to try to have a nice dinner with my dad's family. I say try because I have a rambunctious almost 3 year old that sometimes sits down at restaurants and my sister has a budding toddler so it's not easy. The restaurant staff was pretty easygoing about us having kids which I appreciated. I had two of what I now call my mommy tranquilizers which is pinot grigio. I got salmon to eat because I was drinking my WW points with corn and another vegetable. The salmon was good, the veggies were fresh. Hubby got lobster he said it was okay. Overall dinnerhorn wasn't a bad place, wouldn't mind coming back again to enjoy it a little more when I don't have small kids which will be in 8 to 10 years since we're not trying for a number 2 until our son is 4.5.

Lobster Pie, mashed potatoes and cooked spinach. Triple yum.

Stopped in at the recommendation of our hotel. The lobster pie was amazing. So flavorful and filling. Couldn't eat the entire thing. Service was excellent also. Great place. Go.

    The louie salad

It was late and Dinnerhorn was almost closed so I sat in the bar area (which is a different name and open later). After asking Allison, the bartender, a few questions about the menu I decided on her recommendation the Louie salad. I was looking for something moderately healthy, and this seemed like the way to go. 3 bites in and I was sold. The amount of fish on this salad and the excellent homemade dressing made the dish. Allison was busy, but kept up and another woman came out to help run food and close out checks. It was a nice experience for a quick meal traveling for business. I will try and come back in my travels.

    Fried seafood combo. Pretty generic.

We choose Dinnerhorn because the menu covered all possibilities. I was only going to eat seafood on this mini-vacation but the wife has no passion for this. My son had gotten his fill of burgers and wanted some options. Dinnerhorns vast menu gave us the highest probably satisfying everyone. I had the fried fish sampler (Calamari, Scallops, Shrimp), my wife the sirloin strip steak as they were out of Prime rib, and my son went with the Lasagna. All of the meals were good enough, nothing really stood out or knocked your socks off. The size of the entrees is on the larger size so that's a plus. So if variety is more important than cuisine on a particular outing, this may be just the place to hit up.

We had to pass on dessert but having tried several in the last two visits, they are a no-brainer. We are giving Surf a 9.8 out of 10 ! Also, note, 3 visits were all similar experiences. I had the fish and chips, and was very impressed. The fish was soft and flaky, with a lighter batter that added crispiness without weighing everything down. The fries (chips?) were delicious, seasoned nicely and prepared the way I like. The dish definitely did justice to British pub fare. Service was excellent, everyone was friendly and competent. Even though we arrived about an hour before closing, they were still on their game. The restaurant has beautiful views out onto the water, but we were inside; the sister restaurant downstairs is probably the better option for outdoor seating and scenic views. But for seafood, Surf is a solid choice!

The salmon bites were over saturated in sauce so much so that the panko was soggy, the pan seared scallops were decent but I found the bacon jam to be too sweet paired with the scallops. We could not flag down our waiter any of the times we needed her and every time we asked someone else for help they'd leave and not come back. When it started raining and we needed to move indoors she was gone for so long she was surprised when she returned and we had already had been helped inside by another staff member. We ended the meal when she said she'd come back with water only to disappear and we ended up asking another waitress for the check, and she redirected it back to our waitress, who finally came back with no water. The restaurant was by no means full so I'm not sure what the large gaps in service was, and at one point my friend noticed the waitresses chatting in the kitchen while we were craning our necks. I'd only come back to order the seafood chowder as the rest of the dishes weren't good enough to make up for this.

We chose seats at the comfortable-looking bar, which was a great spot to start the evening and soak in the warm, antique, historical vibe of the space -- lots of character without feeling stuffy. We built our own dinner from a mix of appetizers, and everything we tried was excellent. The local cheese plate featured a soft, brie-like cheese that was rich and delicious. We also ordered the mussels, which were a standout -- especially the mustard component. I wouldn't have expected mustard to pair so well with mussels, but it absolutely worked and added a surprising depth of flavor. There was also a chicken dumpling special that was comforting, well-seasoned, and very satisfying. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. The service at the bar was fantastic. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful when offering advice on what to order, which made the whole experience feel easy and welcoming. The food however is overpriced and just doesn't fit the bill. I was surprised to sit down and see a simple steak and potato dinner was $72. I ordered duck and my wife ordered pork belly. The food was alright but neither were meals that we'd want again. Two entrees, two apps, and a single glass of wine. ~$180 with tip. I don't mind spending $200 on dinner - but if I'm spending that much dinner should be stellar. This was just mediocre and I'm honestly surprised it has a 4.5 star rating average. The server kept running away, no time to give feedback. More attention to our plates and our ordering, than for us and our experience. Note to the wise: ask both people how their food is, and with enough time/follow up than only immediately after getting the dish. The tuna was very bland, it needed salt. I got the beef medallions. Though the beef itself was very good, the entire dish came off like a TV dinner - the sauce was supposed to be peppercorn. It was not. It degraded the entire dish, horribly. So sad for the elements to be buried in that slop. Potatoes were also very odd. For the price we paid, I would rather have had my money back and give my husband a much better birthday experience for somewhere else. Honestly devastating, and definitely cannot guarantee a recommendation from me, if this restaurant is not only inconsistent, but such a waste of so much money.
