If I could recall the names of the individuals who assisted me when I had an emergency disappearance of my purse, they would get a standing ovation here. Much time has passed, but I have not forgotten how the security manager scrubbed through every second of the video, watching over and over again, slowing it down and and analyzing to conclude that I had, in fact, not left my purse on a shopping cart shelf or in the store anywhere. The good-natured way in which he went about it made the experience actually kind of charming. Thanks to him and to the woman who attended to me on the telephone, keeping things calm and moving forward. Oh, and the grocery store. Love that place! read more

I do most of my shopping at Al's mostly because it is very convenient to my home. They do have a nice range of selections and a courteous staff. I have to comment on their produce. Many times the produce will be on the verge of spoiling as soon as I get the stuff home. It is not uncommon for a pre-made salad, tomatoes, Prepackaged salad mix, or other such items to be Spoiled two or three days after purchase, and sometimes on the brink of being spoiled as soon as I get it home. Given that their prices are much higher than some of the competing stores around them. You would think that they would have the highest quality, not low to lowest quality. read more

I got fired about a week ago from als supermarket they said they would mail my check it's been over eight days I have not received my check I will tell you how great their customer service is I was sick with the flu for 3 days I called off and I have been getting sick a lot and was calling off a few times it's not my fault people bring stuff to work and I have a bad immune system I catch it really fast but my boss decided to fire me because of that and she said she did not believe that I was sick. read more

Absolutely the best grocery store in the area! Always great quality produce. The meat department has the best meat you can buy outside of the organic farms. The grocery store stocks specialty items you probably can't get any where else. Not much wait to check out and will carry out groceries to your car if you need them to or when the weather is bad. I ordered my daughter a round pink cake with purple writing, and Minnie mouse. She quotes me the price of $20.99. I go to pick up the cake and no one is working in the bakery, I have to wait in the deli line to talk someone, the price on the cake is now $30.99, no one is at the service desk, and there is nothing pink about the cake. It is ALL purple. If the bakery closes at a certain time a sign would be helpful. My daughter who is turning 3 has been talking about a pink Minnie mouse cake for 2 weeks. just moved from Los Angeles and wow, the prices at Al's are way out of line with the rest of the country. Every item is a dollar to two dollars more than Trader Joes, Meijers, and Jewel. Not just specialty but a box of crackers is 4.99 instead of 2.99. The worst is Barney's in New Buffalo, owed by Al's. Shop at Meijers and save yourself some money. Everyone I know talks about the prices and therefore they go to Kroger's in Laporte, Jewel in Chesterton or Mejiers. Michigan City is a working class town and who needs to spend your hard earned dollars making this company even richer.. shop smart. read more

Decent grocery store. Their selection is fairly large. The Boars Head selection is nice, but way expensive. A majority of the items are overly priced as far as I'm concerned. The service is pretty good. The location and ease of access is nice. The prices are a huge factor in the reason why we dont frequent this place more. The one big plus is that the deli department is great at slicing the thickness and speed of doing so as well. read more

Yes it is true that these are the highest prices, actually for rib-eye it is about 2 1/2 times as high as for the same 359 grams, at Marche-U in Beaulieu Sur Mer, French Riviera. But on some days I earn $30,000 and a really good day, $59,000, so I don't care that it's outrageous here. Besides, the beach here has no meduses, just an on and off again high sewage bacterial count. And, down the street is an excellent French car mechanic for struts, Solex, and turn signal flasher. Al's flat fish prices are competitive and a very nearby Brandy store has the Calvados necessary to make Sole Dieppois just like you can eat in Haute Normandie. Al's has an excellent ocean fish selection at reasonable cost, albeit not $3.50 per 2.2 pounds like in Dieppe for Limande. You can't live any better than eating crispy fried Limande with it's skin removed by the port's fishmonger. The R.A.F. officers also felt that way in early 1940 stationed in France. read more

Regardless of pricing I just wanted to add the staff at Al's are very very helpful, kind and knowledgable. The isles are clean, safe, organized and detailed. Meat dept. always looks fresh and produce the same. Deli and baking are sweet as they can be and have delicious choices. Thanks Al's staff for making my day when ai shop with you! It is a DARN SHAME, that Al's has become what it is now. I have shopped there since I was a baby with my parents. After 25ish years, I have unfortunately stopped shopping there. The deli is great if you enjoy being ignored for 15 minutes. The produce is often wrinkley, bruised, and spoiled. The worse part is, that they have become increasingly more expensive. They are no longer competitive with the other stores. Shopping at Al's has become an insult to my intelligence, and a waste of my time. The management and owners should be embarrassed and ashamed. read more
