We have been going to Alta Vista Dental since 2014. My wife and I do regular check ups & cleaning every year. Dr. Spunde & the entire staff are professional & personable which makes going so much less stressful. Dr. Spunde is focused on client comfort while using her expertise to tackle even the most challenging dental issues. Our regular dental cleanings have been done by Melinda for years and she works to make the experience painless. I have very sensitive teeth and surrounding gums so I can tell you she is great. Her recommendations to me to improve my dental health have been spot on and work well. Judy handles our appointments and billing. She has been very supportive of our needs with a friendly demeanor. I can not be happier with how Dr.Spunde did my filling! I literally chipped off 1/4 of my lower front tooth...I looked like a hillbilly...and thought I'd need an expensive crown to fix it. But nope, the doc took her time to rebuild the entire edge of that tooth and made it look and feel so natural. She even made sure it fits into my Invisilyn retainer perfectly before she let me go. Dr. Spunde is truly an artist, not just a great doctor. The office is super clean and the staff are always friendly and helpful. This review is long overdue. I have been seeing Dr. Spunde for the last 15 years. She's done my fillings, crowns, root canals, prep for implant, and mouth guard. I've had bad experiences with dentists before finding her. She has a conservative approach. She is compassionate with great bedside manner and cares about her patients. Her long-time assistant John is also great, very gentle and considerate. There has been work where my bite was not quite right. She's always been open to patiently fix it until I'm comfortable. I've moved around the Bay Area. Now, even having to drive an hour long, she's still my dentist. A great dentist that you can trust is very hard to find. I've decided to update my initial review, based on subsequent events which call attention Dr. Spunde's judgment. After my last visit with Dr. Spunde I gave a 3 star rating based on office policy not so much on the care I received. In my original assessment, I forgot to include an additional problem I presented with aside from the cleaning I received. I also had a problem of a chipped molar which was examined. Approximately 1/5 of the the tooth was missing, however, I had no pain. According to Dr. Spunde my choices consisted of inserting a post into the tooth and filling the rest, with the risk that the post could weaken the tooth and injure the tooth further, or do nothing and wait for further problems and then place a crown over the tooth. She was to contact me in a week to review the costs as well specific protocol for the choices provided. I never heard from her again. As such, I sought another opinion. The dentist whom I consulted with, specializes in cosmetic dental reconstruction, bonded the tooth. No anesthetic was needed. The repair was done at the same visit for the consultation for a total fee of $264.00. The tooth is now fully functional and so far quite resilient. It is said all things happen for a reason. Though somewhat convoluted initially at Dr. Spunde's office , I was ultimately fortunate to get a second opinion. As for Dr. Spunde, if you can tolerate her inflexible office policy, I would only see her for dental prophylaxis. For any dental reconstruction I would seek someone who truly specializes in that discipline. read more

Oh my goodness... Let me start off by saying that I have never before felt so compelled to leave a review as I do now. Dr. Spunde and her team at Alta Vista Dental is hands-down THE BEST dental team I've ever been able to see as a patient. When I arrived at my appointment, I was greeted by Judy, the office Manager. She's incredibly warm, kind, and knowledgeable and has been priceless in helping me sort out my insurance issues in advance of my appointment. After collecting a few signatures for registration and almost no wait time, Chrissy, the hygienist, walked me to back for x-rays and my cleaning. Chrissy has an incredibly gentle touch. I've never had many issues with my gums such as inflammation or tenderness, but nevertheless, I've bled during cleanings in the past. This was not the case with Chrissy. She's a pro. Dr. Spunde conducted a comprehensive exam and was very very very thorough. She let me know what I needed to get done now, what could wait, and issues we needed to watch. She made sure I understood what was going on with my mouth and took the time to answer any questions I had. Not only is she an amazing doctor and communicator, but she and her assistant, Jessica, are hilarious! As a plus, the office is incredibly beautiful! It's very clean and modern, but also warm and inviting. If you're in need of a new dental team, this is the place to go! read more

I have always hated going to the dentist, so I was quite apprehensive when I walked in. I have to say I was immediately made at ease by the absolutely fabulous and lovely receptionists. These ladies really make you feel like you have been friends forever, constantly smiley and helpful. The practice itself is quite neat and new, everything is super clean and well decorated. The process is very professional and informative. They take xrays and do a complete assessment. The hygienist I was assigned was so amazing and friendly and she did a great job cleaning my teeth and keeping me informed about the whole process. Dr Spunde is incredibly knowledgeable and informative, she really made this dental stuff a breeze. All in all 3/3: great reception, exceptional hygienists and a very knowledgeable dentist. When ya feel that "CRACK" after biting down on something, you know you've got something special going on that only a dentist can fix. I had a lower bicuspid break on me and needed it fixed STAT! I had initially picked Alta Vista Dental during open enrollment because of its proximity to my office. Your best bet for making an appointment is via email. I have absolutely no complaints about that since I am constantly on the phone at work. Judy is quick to reply (within 5 minutes of sending, really) with available appointments. I sent in my appointment request at 8:15, and within 2 emails I was confirmed for a noon visit. How's that for speedy? I was honestly expecting something like 2 weeks out. Dr. Spunde was at the counter when I arrived and introduced herself to me. I filled out new patient info via their IPad and was quickly taken to x-ray. It's actually amusing when the machine scans around your head, you hear the voice from the speaker "please close your eyes while the machine is scanning...."...the music plays as though you're strolling through the progressive store shopping for insurance! Lol. ".....X-ray is now complete, you may now open your eyes" I had to giggle. I was waiting for "We hope your enjoy the rest of your stay here at Alta Vista Dental" but it never happened. I needed a root canal. Dr. Spunde was able to do the procedure right then and there. Always concerned about my comfort. I was done in about an hour and a half with absolutely no pain whatsoever! Ohh-yeaaa! You can grind half of my face off and I wouldn't feel a thing! She also made sure that the filling wasn't awkward and that my bite was good too! She knows her stuff and cares about your comfort level. Solid 5 stars with my jaw wide open! read more

I made an appointment last year for teeth cleaning in Jan 2022. I received a call informing me the appointment was cancelled due to someone who possibly had covid. They were going to let me know when I could reschedule. No problem with that. I called today to find out if they if they resumed the cleaning and was informed they no longer ACCEPT Delta Dental HMO which is the insurance I have. The reality is they no longer wanted my business and did not have the courtesy to let me know in JAN. VERY POORLY DONE. read more

5 stars! All the staff is really friendly! I came here needing a lot of work done on my teeth and it was nerve racking at first but Eva and her assistant Jessica changed that for me. Eva is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and professional I really liked that she was communicating to me through the entire procedure. Jessica suggested playing my music through headphones which really helped! They gave me great advice that has already made a difference. It has been such a relief to find Dr. Spunde! After my long time dentist retired, I flailed about for years before my husband discovered her - surprisingly via our insurance company, Delta Dental. I'm a dentist's nightmare. My brother was a dentist and my sister a dental hygienist, so I have high expectations. I had been sorely disappointed by five other dentists - giving each at least a year of my time and far too much money before finding her. So the review. First about the offices: She has two locations, a beautiful state of the art office in Livermore and another nice, but more crowded, office in Downtown Oakland. Perhaps because Oakland is more densely populated than Livermore, I find making an appointment is easier in Livermore. I choose to go to her Livermore office. Although it is 25 minutes from home, it is an easy mid-day drive, right off the freeway, and after my appt. I get some shopping done at the Costco down the street. My husband and son ride their bicycles to the Oakland office. Nice art and the office donates $1.00 to various nonprofits each time you commute by bike. Dr. Spunde has been very gentle and thorough at every checkup and teeth-cleaning. She did an outstanding job replacing a broken crown and a disintegrating amalgam. Her replacements have been very comfortable. She very patiently adjusted the bite, and paid attention to me when my bite wasn't working. It has been such a relief to be without the residual pain that often accompanies crown work. She also fitted me for a mouth guard - works great - fits well. She gives educated advice about throat and mouth structure and problems that I've never received from a dentist before. I have a throat obstruction which makes it difficult for me to breath when I'm on my back with my mouth open. (It makes me a rather difficult patient). But she pointed out how I could get it corrected and drew the problem for me to show my Kaiser Doctor. She also always gives me breaks to breathe - noticing before I'm struggling. I'm skittish in the chair, but she has a very reassuring manner, kind but professional, that helps me relax. I've always struggled with Novocain shots, but I haven't had that problem with her. The needle is deftly in and out before I realize it. Along similar lines, she was very quick to notice a reaction I had to an epinephrine shot - and responded so calmly and quickly I barely had a chance to realize I was reacting. She is brilliant. So. I highly recommend her. I hope it doesn't get too difficult to get an appointment! read more

Dr. Spunde is the best dentist I've ever been to. My husband and I are patients of hers, and our experience has been completely positive. We first found her in the spring of 2016, after our longtime dentist retired. We had just signed up for Costco's dental plan, and Alta Vista Dental was a participating provider. I had had a terrible toothache the previous fall, and had tried a dentist in Brentwood, where we live. He did a cursory exam and charged a high price. Not satisfied with him, I visited Dr. Spunde. On my first visit, she did the most thorough exam of my teeth, gums, and mouth I've ever had. She also used a very cool x-ray machine, and that plus her exam enabled her to say I needed a root canal and then a cap...which the Brentwood dentist had completely missed. It was a complicated root canal, so I had to have that done elsewhere, but Dr. Spunde took care of the cap, and it fits well and looks beautiful. My husband and I also agree with the other reviewers about how charming her manner is, and how gentle her touch. We have enjoyed getting to know her, her assistant Jessica, and her office manager Judy. We hope she stays in business for many years. read more

Dr. Spunde has been our family dentist for 4 years. My husband who has trusted very few dentists in his life, trusts Dr. Spunde. She is wonderful and great at what she does. She tells you the truth and works with you on a treatment plan that you are comfortable with, but let's you know the consequences of your choices. For example, I waited too long to take care of an issue she warned me about 18 months ago. The office staff is super nice too. The office is relaxing and clean and very close to Costco and a craft spirits tasting room. read more

10/10 as good as it gets! I was looking for a new dentist as the former dentist i had didn't seem to care about my oral health at all. I made a few calls around to see where i can get the soonest appointment i can cause i need a crown replacement and work done asap and i'm so glad i got a very quick response. Online appointment is outstanding, usually offices do not respond to 'online' appointments and you would have to call the actual office to even get an appointment only to have an availability of 3 weeks the soonest. I emailed them, got a response the next day and was able to see Dentist in a week! I had a bit trouble finding the office, if you're using google maps / waze, it's going to take you to a different building, the building is located all the way in the back, right past the roundabout and you should see a sign next to the door. Office is new, updated, and clean, staffs are very professional. I was the last person to be seen that day but i still received exceptional thorough response from Dr.Spunde. I always have a hard time sitting still from bad experience at a different office before but Dr.Spunde is going to make you feel comfortable and would always ask if you're doing okay throughout the procedure, which is very reassuring especially if you're anxious. If you're scared of shots, you wouldn't be anymore. Usually even with shots i still feel uncomfortable / pain when the dentist is doing some work. But here, Dr did the shot waited a couple minutes did some work and i honestly would say i never felt not ONE thing! I've never met such honest, thorough, and caring as Dr.Spunde. You can tell she loves what she does and cares about her patients. Very blunt and honest about your oral health and would let you know what needs to be done, steps needed to be taken, and how to prevent future oral problems. Highly recommended! read more

Awesome Dentist!!!! I was compelled to write my first ever Yelp review as a result of the awesome and excellent services I received at Alta Vista Dental from Dr. Spunde. The receptionist was very helpful and the Dr. Spunde was ready to see me right away. My digital x-rays were quick and painless, plus the machine plays classical music while it takes the films!! Very classy and soothing indeed :) The room was open and well lit, with nice views of the outside land. The music playing was very relaxing and helped me forget about the drill that would soon be on my teeth!! It's also worth mentioning that the chair was by far the nicest and most comfortable dentist chair I've experienced. As far as treatment is concerned, I was thoroughly impressed! After reading my x-rays, Dr. Spunde did multiple procedures that I have never received before at a dentist office!! She checked my TMJ for symmetrical movement and muscle tone and explained how the biomechanics of the jaw were dependent on level teeth and an even bite. She said that it is something be checked, especially if someone had TMJ problems or headaches. I had neither, but she checked anyways. She inspected each tooth individually, front and back for gum recession and health, and rating them systematically for future reference, and she palpated and inspected my glands and soft tissues for abnormalities. I felt she was expedient, proficient and highly skilled while performing all of these procedures. Most importantly, the treatment was painless, quick and comfortable. The equipment used was top-notch and of the highest quality. Dr. Spunde's bed-side manner was appropriate and light-hearted, with a few jokes from her setting a calm mood before we started. The cleaning results were awesome and the doctor had recommendations for oral care going forward specifically based off my current needs. Dr. Spunde is an honest, skillful, knowledgable and thoughtful practicioner, who puts the patient's needs first. This is the first time I would consider a dentist visit a 'pleasure' and I would recommend it to my family and friends and will definitely be returning. Thank you Dr. Spunde!! read more

The other day I randomly started having intense tooth pain. I called Dr. Spunde and she came in the office and saw me after business hours. I'll add in that she was a little under the weather that day too. There are not many doctors that would do that. The office is very clean and well decorated. All the equipment is new. She has a super cool x-ray machine that spins around your head and takes a 3D pictures. Dr, Spunde took the time to thoroughly examine me and explain to me everything that was going on and gave me options for fixing it.
