This company installed our solar panels two years ago. We have a steep roof so it was a unique challenge. When we initially met with Joy she represented that they have experience designing solar for steep roofs and she showed up examples of prior work. During the design, contracting, and installation phases, the company was responsive and easy to work with. However, one year later it became clear that the design was not sufficient to meet our solar needs as Joy and Han represented; not even close, and we are still paying a large electricity bill each month. As such, the economic analysis offered by the company to entice us to move forward with them doesn't pencil out and we might never recover our investment costs. If they had provided the actual solar production, we would not have moved forward with the project. When we contacted the company about this issue in summer 2024, they were very slow to respond and even though they offered to redesign the system, they delayed and delayed and often we had to contact them multiple times before we received a response. Further, they tried to shift some blame to the "trees and unexpected weather conditions." The trees being referenced were there at the time of their bid and appeared in their modeling. The trees are trimmed regularly. The weather has not had any significant deviations. More than a year after we contacted them, they have not yet redesigned the system, nor can they guarantee that the new redesign will cover our solar needs. It is very disappointing that they have not made this right. Hopefully, we can still resolve this issue, but I felt compelled to write this review so others are aware that the anticipated solar production and the economic analysis to convince you to sign may be grossly misleading. read more

They helped us sort through lots of options and configurations. Prices were competitive with bigger 'name' companies. We really prefer using local companies, especially with something like solar, where having them nearby is a benefit. Was try to give a local business a try and called Altadena Energy & Solar, what a disappointment this was. Their first thing they say is that "we're short on technicians, but I can take your info and call you back tomorrow ". Well, a week later, still no call back, nothing. They should have just told me that they only want full installation and didn't want to do a troubleshooting and repair job... and for this I give them a generous one star. read more

Altadena Solar is a small local business that installed my solar panels a couple of years ago. They were very helpful, reliable and professional. I'm very happy with my system and their service. If we've had any issues, they've been mostly caused by my own inability to pay attention. For example, after installation, a part in the system failed. I didn't track the system performance as advised and didn't notice that my system stopped working, but they did! They ordered a new part and installed it free of charge. One year later, I noticed my kitchen ceiling had a small round discoloration. I assumed it was a water leak and contacted them thinking their installation must have created a leak. They immediately came over and Were able to wipe the stain and discovered it was not a leak but possibly caused in the process of food prep. I was embarrassed and felt terrible about wasting their time. However, they were kind and understanding throughout. I highly recommend this business. read more

Altadena Solar installed a 6.6 kW system for us in October of 2019 (delayed review). Overall at the time I thought it was ok, but was disappointed by a few details. Mostly, some of the solar panels on the flag roof were visible from the ground. I asked them about dropping the angle of the panels, to make them not visible, and they said they would look into it after we passed inspection. But then when I asked again after inspection, they said the angle could not be changed. I was disappointed that they were not able to fix this issue. Also, some of the equipment was located close to one of the windows, instead of being located more centrally on a wall between the windows, so it was visible when looking out the window at an angle. As I noted, small details. If I would have written this review 3 years ago, I probably would have given them 5 stars. However, I recently had solar installed on my house by another contractor (got a quote from Altadena, but they were about 10% more expensive, and I decided to go with a contractor who was local to where I live). While the contractor did a good job on the install, there were some of the technical details that fell short, included them selecting a panel upgrade that can not accommodate a CT (which measures power consumed). But this experience made me realize that Altadena Solar actually is pretty good. My one recommendation is if you have specific aesthetic preferences, be sure to be there during the operations. read more

They were willing to modify their initial quote to use particular products I wanted to use, did a great job with installation, fast and very neat, and answered all our questions. After installing our initial solar system, we bought a Tesla, and so we called Altadena Energy and Solar to install a charger and some additional panels to support it. As before, everything went very smoothly. Joy and Hans helped us decide how many panels to add and used a modeling program to figure out the best placement. Once again, they handled all of the permits, which were all promptly approved. We will be contacting them again to install a battery as soon as we have saved enough money for it. Hans and Joy are an absolute pleasure to work with. Hans did an extremely thorough job making sure I understood every aspect of the quote and proposal that they put together and made sure I understood what the trade-offs would be given various panel placement options on my particular roof. He and his team also worked with me on installing an upgraded roof coating material and doing an electrical upgrade that I had been considering for a while, and with my new cool-roof white coating, my home is much cooler in the sun than it used to be and I don't have any roof leaks anymore! The communication from Hans and Joy was phenomenal throughout. I always knew exactly where we stood in the process, and they kept me updated on the rebate paperwork (that they submitted for me!) and permitting as they worked through them. I was very pleasantly surprised at how quick and painless the installation process was, and I couldn't be happier with the system I have in place. Not sure why these guys only have 4 reviews but from start to finish Hans and Joy were great to deal with. From the initial consultation to the moment we switched the system on they were on top of it. Like most everyone, we initially requested quotes from 4 companies (all 4.5-5 star on yelp). Not only was Joy's initial consult the most thorough, explaining all of the various options but their quote was actually the least expensive. Our system is now on and producing great results! Blasting the A/C guilt free is priceless. Don't select your solar installer solely based on the number of reviews! We're glad we didn't! Edit: I see that they also have a bunch of 5-star hidden reviews. They probably just didn't want to pay Yelp's extortion fees which they state doesn't change the way the algorithms run. This is a great company. We've been running for two months now on a 21-panel residential install done by Altadena Energy & Solar. The entire install process took about a month from agreement to install to PWP permit. This review is long overdue. We've be running our system for a year now and could not be happier. From start to finish we had an amazing experience with Hans and Joy! They guided us through each step of the process and worked with us to determine exactly what we needed in regards to system size and how exactly to maximize the efficiency. During the install process we had a few issues with permits from the city and Hans took care of it without us having to worry about it. Also, we recently had an issue with our inverter and it was Hans that actually realized we were having an issue through their monitoring. He reached out to us directly to ask if we were having problems. I honestly think it would have been a week or longer before I realized that our system wasn't functioning properly and they caught it within a day. We've been thinking about going solar for years and finally when we got tired of our escalating electric bills we decided to make the plunge. We, as everyone should, did our due diligence and got estimates from multiple companies. Joy from Altadena Energy & Solar was our initial contact and she proved to be extremely knowledgeable about the business. She listened to our needs and concerns and explained the process of generating solar power in a simple straight forward way. She gave us many options for a variety of panels / inverters and explained the differences in an easily understandable fashion. Everything went smoothly. All questions that we had we're quickly answered and we never felt abandoned during any part of the project. The process isn't a one day procedure as there are a variety of hoops you have to jump through with the utility company and the city/county permits. Joy and Hans handled every aspect of the install including roof inspection, engineering design, permitting and installation. Their crew was friendly and respectful. Everything went extremely well without any problems. After turn on they had us set up to monitor our system using our smart phones / tablet. Solar power can be overwhelming with a lot of companies offering their opinions and services. But who do you trust? We reached out to three solar power providers, 2 large national companies and one local one. The first large company came to our home looked around a bit asked to see our utility bills (we only had 3 months as we were new owners). They said this is a big house so we recommend a big system, the purchase price will be app $53,000. The second large company came, saw that the other large company had already visited us and said without looking at our home, that they could offer the same system for 10% less. Then on recommendation from our neighbors came Hans Rosenberger from Altadena Energy & Solar. He spent over 1 hour looking around our home and gardens, he asked many questions to better understand our expectations and energy needs. He consulted to us explaining we could instantlly reduce our energy consumption with a few modifications to our pool, pond, lighting and energy consumption habits. The result was amazing. We invested $29,000 in our system, received 30% back from the IRS, haven't paid a cent in energy costs and just received a $68.00 refund for the first years excess power produced. Over 1 year later Hans still remains in contact, he monitors our system remotely and advises on alternative utility tariffs, especially given our investment in electric vehicles. We have a difficult situation due to our house direction and the architectural nature of our home. We went to several of the known national solar companies and none had a reasonable or helpful solution. Hans did and he was patient with us as we understood how this would work.
