I selected to go with Imperial Solar because my sister used them and was very happy with their work. She actually referred them to a friend who also used them and was happy. We were lucky, all we needed to do was upgrade our electric panel. Once the solar panels were in place, the electric company quickly approved the installation. I didn't buy a battery. The total cost was $30,000 we received a $9,000 tax credit, making the cost of the panels $21,000 for a 2,200 square foot home. Our electric bill which is monthly, last summer ranged from $500-$900. Had them install 27 panels on a newly renovated roof - process was smooth and they handled everything from permitting to PTO, with frequent updates. Pricing was good, middle of the pack I'd say, but what sold me were the reviews. This is not a fly by night business either, and they're on top of their stuff... good communication and no surprises. Production is good, I just need to figure out whether TOU is best for me as I'm with LADWP. Pro tip: when they install your system, ask them for a/ a cellular enabled controller (mine is WiFi only, which requires I'm at home to check my production) and b/ upgrade to measure how much you produce vs consume from your utility company... It all started when a Solar company knocked on my door. I wasn't looking to go solar but was in a good mood so I chatted with the rep. Over the course of a month we talked and I got interested as I'm now retired and was looking for ways to cut our variable costs. Being a retired Engineer, I started to take a deep dive into solar power, pros and cons. I learned that this door-to-door company was way to expensive as they wanted to lease the panels and have me pay for 25 years and raise the rate by 2% each year. So they offered me to eliminate the escalation clause, the 2%, but what I learned was that it was still too expensive. So, I did what a good engineer would do and made a spreadsheet. It had all their numbers in it for the 25yr lease. I then did a deep dive into our LADWP historical rates back to 2015. I learned that LADWP raised their rates an average of 6% per year! I then created a spreadsheet with what the current rates were for Tiers 1-3 and projected it out 25 years at a 5% increase each year to be conservative. The numbers were frightening! At this point I wanted to really consider solar. I went to Yelp and scanned for a local, reputable solar company and found Imperial Solar had a 5-star rating and glowing reviews. I'm leaving out names at their request as Yelp takes issue with names. I called Imperial and talked with a real Mechanical Engineer. He went over everything and sent me links to all the solar equipment they use. The panels and inverters and combiners were top notch equipment. He recommended 28 panels based upon my stated requirements of 20,000 kwh/year. In the end I added two additional panels as I wanted to use my HVAC more than I had in the past and wanted to exceed 2020 power usage as 2020 was extremely hot at my location. After being convinced that Imperial was the best choice (I had quotes from others) we set the plan in motion. The process took about 2.5 months as you need to get approvals from LADWP and LACITY before turning on the system. Imperial installed the 30 panels in two days with 30 micro-inverters and a single Combiner box... a very clean installation. Their crew was professional, polite, and clean. As an engineer I watched the installation on my brand new roof very carefully, I was impressed with the materials they used and their installation methods. On May 19th 2022 I was able to switch on the Solar Breaker after receiving the PTO (permission to operate) from LADWP. Now, here's the actual benefit I'm getting comparing 2020-2022. My billing period starts mid month and ends 2 months later mid month. 2020 May-July $847 2021 $737 2022 $25 2020 July-Sept $1339 2021 $977 2022 $107 We have a 2400 sq/ft single story home and it was over 100 degrees for about 2 weeks straight in Aug-Sept. We ran our A/C at 78 degrees. The $107 is really about $70 as the LADWP is charging me a Tier-3 Connection fee as they look back 1 year and if you hit Tier-3 anytime during that year you will pay the higher connection fee for the next year. This will be reset lower after October this year per LADWP. As you can see, having solar will pay off BIG time. Imperial Solar sells the systems outright, they don't play the rip-off leasing game. The Door-to-Door guy wanted $72,500 over the 25yr lease and I bought my 30 panel system for $30,530. I estimate I will save around $125,000 over the next 25 years due to the historical rate hikes by the LADWP. Imperial Solar is very professional, very responsive, and do exactly what your contract states. They use top of the line panels made in Germany and Inverters/Combiners from the best supplier. I had been looking to do solar for a couple of years and had researched about monocrystalline panels vs polycrystalline or micros vs optimizers. Doing any kind of big project in and one your home is stressful. Getting solar installed is a big decision. It's costly and is not a small decision. I've had an easier time buying a car than making the decision to invest in solar, which is crazy because solar pays back and a car doesn't. Anyway, I had been looking around for a long time. I've spoken to many solar companies, including the door to door salesman that would show up at my door from time to time. I would always do the initial inquiry and then leave it behind because it was just too much to deal with. Every year my electric bill would go up and LADWP would increase their rates, and after so many of my friends raved about how much of a difference solar made on their bills I decided to give it one last push and just go for it. It was by chance that I ran into Imperial Solar, and after reading their reviews I decided to give them a call. I spoke with the design team and they were all very extremely well spoken, informative, and just seemed very genuine. I still wanted to call around for some other quotes so I told them that I would get back to him. Imperial ended up being slightly more expensive but I felt so much more comfortable with them. The price difference was definitely justified and well worth it. I didn't feel comfortable or confident with the other companies I spoke with. I called back Imperial and spoke with them again, and this went on for 2-3 weeks because I just couldn't make up my mind. When I did finally decide to just go with it, everything went so fast. 07/09 - Sent a message through yelp for a quote. Spoke with them the next day and received a quote within two days after that. 07/13 - September - a series of phone calls requesting information, me asking questions, taking time to think, etc. 09/09 - signed contract 09/14 - site survey 10/11 - solar install 10/26 - city inspection 11/14 - permission to turn on From signing to turning on the solar it took two months. I know it might not be the same for everyone, but this was my experience. I expected it to take much longer. I will mention that in between those dates there wasn't much of anything for me to do. Imperial took care of everything that needed to be done with the city and with LADWP. I did nothing. It was exactly what I was looking for in a company. I'm so grateful for these guys. I decided to call and ask some questions and the interaction ended up being so different from the previous two. I spoke with the design team and they were incredibly patient, so kind, very clear and informative, and not pushy at all. They were more than happy to give me a little bit of time to make my decision, and spent a few phone calls making sure I had no questions left before I signed the contract. I expected the entire process to take a few months, but I was so pleasantly surprised at how efficient everything was. We also went through many contractors. We thought we wanted to switch from a gas furnace/cooling system to electric. But the Steve at Imperial Solar came out to go through everything, plus answer all of our concerns, as well as he went through the whole process, proving to us that an electric heat/cooling is not the best way to go -considering we were doing solar. it would have drained so much of our solar production. Our utility bills have been 90% less than what they were last year. Also, I didn't mention that last year to keep the power bill as low as possible, we set our thermostat at 78 degrees, but now after installing the solar system, we are much more comfortable at 68 degrees.
