This was one of the worst customer service experiences I've had. Because of heavy rain, I couldn't pick up my dress on the scheduled day. I came the next day (Wednesday) only to find the shop closed -- something I was never told as a first-time customer. When I mentioned this, she said I 'should have known.' After returning from the wedding, I called ahead to let her know I'd be coming to pick up my dress. She gave me an appointment and told me to come, but when I arrived, she gave me attitude about people waiting ahead of me and told me to just take the dress. When I said I'd like to try it before taking it, she went back to saying that I had missed my original pickup day, instead of being professional or helpful. I had already paid, and all she needed to do was show basic courtesy -- simply ask me to wait 10-15 minutes so I could try the dress and make sure it fit. Instead, she was rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. To make it worse, the dress wasn't even finished properly and the alterations were not as expected. I even missed wearing the dress to the wedding I needed it for. Professionalism was completely missing here. Rude, unprofessional, and unacceptable -- I would never recommend this place. read more

I can't comment on the finished results, but the business is lacking. My daughter made an appointment to get her prom dress altered. Nothing was said about a consultation fee. After trying it on and them coming up with the price, which took less than 10 minutes, they said it was a $40 consultation fee. She decided not to go with them, when she went to pay the $40, they told her it was actually $45. If I had been with her and not a friend, I'm not sure that would have happened. read more

She does profesional work as apposed to an alternation I would do if I had the time. She reproduces the exact type of seem that was present on the pants when I bought them. I've have had alterations on pants where the seem is hidden from the exterior when I buy them and when I get them back from other seamstresses there is a very visible straight line seem. I picked a sequin dress for my daughter's wedding that needed a total re-work of everything above the waist. Laura took a deep V neck dress and made it off the shoulder with little sequin straps so that I could wear a regular bra. I have a very curvy figure and Laura made this dress fit perfectly. She even gave me a small train that buttoned up in the back for dancing! Upon picking up my sequin dress, I brought in my rehearsal dinner dress for a hem that she will complete in a small time frame. I went to Laura to make alterations to my BHLDN wedding dress after receiving a recommendation from a friend. I was extremely happy with the service I received and I will continue to use Laura for all future alterations. I learned quickly that she is a talented seamstress and is very friendly, timely, patient, and easy to work with. The dress needed quite a bit of work including shortening the overall length and train for three layers, inserting cups to the top, and tightening the straps. There was also a sizeable tear in the tulle near the back buttons and clasp and she was able to flawlessly fix it and hide that it was ever there. The price I received was very fair for the amount of work Laura completed. Even after I picked up my dress I noticed that I wasn't filling the top out, so I stopped back in the next day and she made a quick alteration while I waited. Laura was amazing!!!! I am getting ready for my wedding and had my high school graduation dress that I want to wear to my shower. It was slightly too small in the bust and I wanted it shortened. It's all done now and you cannot tell this isn't what the original dress looked like! Taking a dress out is very difficult and she made it seem so easy! I can't even tell where she took it out. I had to go in a total of three times, I was expecting more. The first time she put some pins in where it needed to be taken out and like magic the next time I was there it fit perfect! She marked how short I wanted it and told me I could pick it up in a week. I was very skeptical because of the location of her shop, but had no problems. I don't know how much major alterations normally cost but I was expecting a lot more than Laura charged!! I'll go back for anything! read more

I took a beautiful bell sleeve mini dress here a couple years ago to get the sleeves shortened about an inch, and it was completely destroyed by Laura (or maybe I should say her seamstress, because this is whom she decided to put the blame on). The sleeves were cut five inches shorter than requested, and because of this the bell portions on the sleeves were stiff little triangles. She didn't even reimburse me for the price of the alteration, but only for part of the cost of the dress (which I had to get re-sent to me all the way from New York, and was almost unable to replace it). To even receive a partial reimbursement was like pulling teeth. I asked nicely at first, and she was nothing but rude to me, saying that this happens and blamed her seamstress for incorrectly marking the sleeves. Don't even bother blaming your lack of communication with your co-workers..... We just continued to argue back and forth for a good half hour over this. She finally decided to partially reimburse me after I threatened to sue her for the full cost of the dress. Did it really have to come down to that? This was a very negative experience. She completely lacks customer service skills and can't take the blame when something goes wrong. read more

I had the most horrifying experience with Alterations by Laura. I took my dream wedding dress to her to be altered and she ruined my dress. I had my first appointment about 5 months before the wedding when I brought in my size 10 wedding dress. When I came back in March the dress was taken in way too much and I was told by Laura not to try sitting in my dress, ummmm that's a problem. Then I was told to try and lose 10 pounds and she suggested drinking water. I am normally a size 4 and felt pretty comfortable about my dress size, but this where I made a mistake. I should have walked out of there with my dress and went somewhere else at this point. Instead I lost weight and went down to a size 0. Even after losing the additional weight the dress was too tight and by the next fitting it still didn't fit right and on top of that the front hem was uneven. This brings me to 2 weeks before my wedding. I then decided to stop working with Laura as my dress was shrinking and I was told there is nothing that can be done as there is not enough fabric, even though the original dress was a size 10, where did the fabric go?!?! I was heartborken and panicing. The end of the experience was terrible and the things she said were incredibly rude. Long story short I had to buy a new dress 2 weeks before my wedding. I had an amazing day and married my best friend, but I will always be disappointed by the fact that I was unable to wear my dream dress. read more

I've taken lots of things here and they've all been great. I had several pairs of pants hemmed here, with good results. I had several dresses in different fabrics (rayon, cotton, and silk) fixed here (zippers replacements and seam repairs) and they all look great now. She took about a week for all of my alterations, except one where she looked long and hard for the right color zipper to match the dress. Since I didn't urgently need it, I had no problem with waiting a little longer for a better product! I thought the prices were reasonable, even cheap, but I haven't taken a lot of clothes to tailors in my life so I can't speak to that with certainty. You MUST see Laura for your tailoring needs, especially if you have a special occasion dress. My best friend has been using her for years for her pagent gowns and now that she is getting married, we (the bridesmaids) are all using her for our fitting needs. The bride and three of us bridesmaids graduated from high school with her son so she is familiar with all of us and waived the $10 pressing fee. Yes, her store may look a little dodgy since it's in the not-so-nice part of Mundelein but don't judge this book by its cover because she is best of the best in this area. I brought a dress in to Laura for an alteration and upon picking up, found that the hem was short on one side, long on the other. Because she had set the pick up date so close to my engagement, she did not give herself enough time to rectify the problem and told me she was VERY busy. When I picked up the dress at a later date, it was not fixed properly (still uneven) and I found pins INSIDE the hem. Thankfully, I had anticipated a problem and purchased another dress in the meantime. Very unprofessional -- not recommended. read more

Laura altered several cocktail dresses, a suit for a job interview, several pairs of slacks, and most recently my wedding gown. I have total confidence in her abilities. It's like magic - every time I receive the altered garment back, I look for the new seams or other tell-tale signs of alterations. None to be found! You can't tell where she cut or sewed. I called Laura on Saturday, 9/30/17, about altering my wedding dress, adding a bustle, and re-working my mother-in-law's veil for my wedding on Saturday, 10/21/17 (Yes- THREE weeks out). She was able to schedule my initial fitting that Monday with 3 additional appointments to make sure everything would be completed for my big day. She was incredibly sweet and helpful and it was such a relief to know my dress was in such great hands, especially so close to the date. I had lost a significant amount of weight from the time of purchase, so she was able to bring the dress in, what I believe was around 4 sizes, while transferring the beading and lacework on the side of the dress so it was still exactly where it was designed to be. The veil was previously used with a Juliet cap and was very long, and unlike most brides-to-be, I had absolutely no idea of what I wanted to do with it. Laura helped guide me to a decision by demonstrating various options since I was clueless (I'm pretty terrible with all of these things). She even had beautiful pieces available for purchase (i went with a gorgeous clip), and she attached the veil in a double layer with discreet velcro so I could remove the veil while leaving the clip in place. She did an amazing 14-point French bustle and took the time to explain to my bridesmaids and mother-in-law on two separate occasions. Laura really did a beautiful job- my dress fit perfectly- and I absolutely recommend her for any alterations you may need! I brought my wedding dress here because the place had amazing reviews and my first initial visit went well . I however will not be returning because first my dress was not done at the day promised. I brought my dress in more than 4 months in advanced. Also I had requested for the dress not to be steamed, I felt as tho she waited longer to finish the dress so that I could give in to pay the extra amount for the dress to be steamed. My wedding dress was simple and elegant, which is how I wanted it to be. Laura added minimal tulle to help fill the dress out so the fabric didn't cling to my legs when I walked.
