I had a wonderful first experience at this optometry office last month. Dr. Lodenquai was very kind, patient, and thorough in her examination. She really dialed in my first pair of progressives and helped me find a good option for daily contact lens giving me a generous amount of two different options to test out at home. I did have a pair of progressives from a previous optometry office in Mountain View, but those didn't work and the folks there weren't trying to help me make it better, so I just had those converted to single vision lens. Dr. Lodenquai took her time and made it happen with the help of her staff. The front office staff are friendly and helpful with making appointments and answer questions thoroughly. Lisa walked me through insurance questions I had and provided much needed clarification. Ed made sure everything worked out with my glasses when I needed to get a little more power added for reading. He also took time to help me pick out a great pair and he really made the process a fun experience. These are people who care and who create a pleasant atmosphere for customers. This place is incredible, and I feel very lucky to have found Altos Family Optometry. From first time I called and spoke with Andrew, I felt welcomed, and it was effortlessly to make arrangement for an eye exam. Upon my first visit in their beautiful location, I was given 2 options of eye exam, and I opted for the higer end full service. I never thought I would describe an eye exam as delightful, but it was. Edward, with a warm sense of humor, did a great job (both visits, different tests), and was easy to communicate with. Dr. Susan Lodenquai, knowledgeable, engaging, kind and yes, easy to laugh with. Who would have thought, a visit as this could feel so great. Now, why not the 10 Stars I truly want to give... ? There's something about the final payment that doesn't add up, + a $45 charge for teaching me to apply & take out the contact lens. So in all fairness, I'll talk to them next week, and update on the outcome, which I hope is just a plain mistake. read more

Update: I have been seeing Dr Lodenquai for almost 20 years now. I started seeing Dr Lodenquai after I graduated from college and moved back to the Bay Area for work. I've lived in Los Altos, then San Jose, then Sunnyvale, and she has been a constant for my eye care. Why? Because she has delivered the utmost quality eye care. My eyes have stopped becoming worse since I started seeing her (steady prescription, only issues I have are puffy / irritated eyes through seasonal allergies). The only other thing she has tried to "sell" me on during my time with her was lasik, for which she referred me to outside specialists, and when I decided to not go through with it, there was zero pressure - just back to the usual rhythm of things. I have seen rounds of staff and they have all been helpful - not special, they're not doctors themselves, but they keep the appointment rolling. If you want solid, steady, and consistent eye care, Dr Lodenquai would be a great option. Set it and forget it, you'll be taken care of. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Lodenquai for over 10 years, and I continue to make the trip down the Peninsula just to stay under her care--she's truly that good. She is by far the most thorough and thoughtful doctor I've encountered. She takes the time to walk through multiple exams and always explains what she's doing in a clear, helpful way. Been coming here for about 7-8 years, and my family as well. Dr. Lodenquai is super nice and puts us all at ease. She talks through everything she is doing, so I am never wondering. If necessary, she has always asked if it's okay to dilate my eyes, and explains how it will help with the exam but never has pushed me to do it - but I'm typically fine with it. She is very professional and very good. The office staff is really friendly and helpful with any questions I've had. Billing through insurance is always smooth without issues. Ignored my wife's direct instructions to hang onto her glasses while she confirmed the prescription they measured. I've been coming to Altos Family Optometrist for roughly 4 years now. The doctor and the staff members are all friendly at the clinic. Overall, I do enjoy the annual check-up for my eyes examined. This year is the first year that I decided to try on contact lenses and I think the staff can do a better job. When I tried on my contact for the first week I noticed a slight discomfort as the contact lenses are grabbing onto my eyeball. I've described the discomfort with the staff and they have the tone of, well, what else are you expecting? There are contact lenses on your eye, a kind of tone which was not pleasant. How would I know if I should feel something grabbing on my eyeballs when this was my first time trying on contact lenses? But on the other end, the doctor was nice about it and explaining what may cause the issues, and let me tried on other brands of contact lenses. Once I decided which brand of contact lenses I want. I spent quite some time talking to the staff. As they didn't document what insurance I have because they kept giving me different answers on my coverage (2-3 times back and forth with different staffs). Overall, the doctor and the staffs are all really nice when you are in person. But I feel there should be some kind of training when they answer the phone and/or emails. read more

Meh. I expected more, given these reviews. I get there and a young woman with no social skills ushers me into a room, says "sit here, look through this lens." I have never been to this place and have no idea what she's doing. She never said hello or welcome and never explained what the test was for. (It seemed very random.) Then I meet Dr. Tang. I'm sure she is good at her craft but her communication is really a challenge (conveying ideas clearly, not a language barrier). I am someone who likes to learn about health as much as I can, so I ask a ton of questions. There were multiple times when I had to repeat the question several times. I kept getting really vague, confusing/unrelated answers. I'm sure she's smart and all, but the interactions were just frustrating. I finally just gave up. She then told me she was going to dilate my eyes. Uh, no. Nobody told me this was part of the routine exam and I was not prepared for this. When I went to leave, I realized I had forgotten my credit card. I told the receptionist I would pay as soon as I got home. When I did not call them with my card number within 30 minutes - no joke - the other receptionist (woman #1 from above) calls me for payment. When she got my number she just hung up without saying goodbye. Look, I am happy to pay my bills in a timely fashion but this seemed a bit excessive. read more

I'm always very happy with the prompt returned calls I get from Altos Family Optometry. They are always willing to provide me the times that they are available and in a professional manner. Whether it's to pick up my contacts, have my new glasses fitted or for my yearly check up, they keep me in the loop. The office itself has a wide variety of glasses to choose from and Dr. Lodenquai is extremely thorough in her exams. She asks a variety of questions relating to my eyes and what my daily computer routines are. She also offers some samples for products she recommends so I never feel pressured into having to buy the product before I get to try it. I have been a patient of Altos Family Optometry for over 3 years now. The staff is friendly and the doctors care about their patients. The location is convenient for work and they always go the extra mile to help make your exams enjoyable and comfortable. The hours they are open are a little off from the standard M-F 9-5, but this is a family business so being closed early one day a week and then open on Saturdays instead is a very minor inconvenience when you receive such great care. You feel like you're the only patient she has when you're there. She explains all your options, explains anything you want to know (i learned about diopters from Dr. Lodenquai on my last visit.) I tried out Altos Family Optometry for the simple reason that it is close (walking distance) from my house in Los Altos. Now I wonder why I didn't use this logic before because it works, and I'm very happy with the service there. I have been wearing glasses since I was a teenager, now I'm middle age, and never really felt like prior service providers (optometrists) were the type of place that I'd recommend, more like a transactional experience. Altos Family Optometry is the opposite. At first I ordered new glasses, prescription progressive bifocals, and found not only Dr. Lodenquai, but the entire staff there to be friendly and helpful. Service and communication are prompt and professional, they never kept me waiting, and I am so pleased that I recommended my wife try it too. She also bought some prescription glasses and then passed the recommendation to my older daughter, who bought some prescription glasses as well. That's 3 pairs in 2 months and my wife and daughter are equally pleased. On a recent visit, Dr. Lodenquai mentioned that there are new "mutlifocal" contact lenses that would be appropriate for me. I've never had contacts before because I didn't know the technology would permit both distance and reading together. So I thought I would try them out. She helped me find the right brand and prescription and now I am surprised how wonderful contact lenses can be. One nice thing is that they are happy to make appointments and are always right on time, which is very convenient. And there's a frozen yogurt shop and Starbucks less then 30 seconds away to make a visit even nicer. The Service is A+. I can recommend without reservation and expect to be going to Altos Family Optometry until I move away, or die of old age. read more

Having worn glasses since I was in middle school (and now in my 40's), I have visited many an eye doctor. Dr. Lodenquai is by far my favorite. Why? She is patient, knowledgable, clear, kind, interested, really cares about her patients and the health of their eyes and vision. New to the area, I first found her through YELP, so many positive comments - I had to see for myself. I had been one of those who wore my contacts throughout the night never allowing my eyes to breathe (I am so blind that I hated opening my eyes to the blur) - she could tell this in our first eye exam. She gently but firmly explained the importance of allowing my eyes to breath, in the very least over night. She suggested I wear my glasses at night and in the morning - take your contacts out at night and just keep your glasses by the bedside - you'll get used to it, and it is important. I did. She also helped me pick contacts that were the most breathable. Dr. Lodenquai always asks me how I am doing, how my grandmother is doing...she remembers our conversations from way back. AND she really cares. AND I don't think I am the only one she treats this way - it is simply her way. It's kind of an old fashioned way, from a time where people stopped and looked you in the eye and really listened and shared. It is the way it should be, I think. Her staff is a reflection of her, professional and personal - Pam, Jennifer and Jo have always been very helpful. Pam confirms my appointments and reminds me when my yearlys are coming up...Recently, Jennifer helped me try on about 20 pairs of glasses as I went back and forth between this and that one. I never got the sense that I was being too picky or slow. I so appreciated the time she took with me, and the help in choosing frames that I felt good in! Today, I noticed a little table and chairs set up, with crayons and paper to color on. Such a sweet little area - Dr. Lodenquai had put this there for the children so that the mommies could get their exams while their toddlers played. She is a mom of three so knows the challenge of keeping young ones engaged while you are having to take care of "business". This kind of thoughtfulness puts her and her staff above and beyond the rest. I am very thankful and happy for having found Dr. Lodenquai!! read more

Above and beyond customer service! I had splurged and purchased beautiful indestructible frames for my glasses that sadly destructed after their warranty expired. The team at Altos Family Optometry confirmed that the glasses were beyond warranty but immediately volunteered to do what they could to help! And as I had hoped/suspected, they were successful and not only convinced the manufacturer to replace the frames - they replaced the lenses as well! They are ALWAYS wonderful and responsive and that is why my family continues to support them as well! read more

Went here to get replacement lenses for my glasses. First, went to get an eye exam and that went fine. Put in an order for new lenses. Lenses took a while ( i have rimless drill mount ), so it took about 2 weeks. When I got the glasses, they were not mounted/drilled properly. Altos Family Optometry should have QC'd the glasses before calling me in. I told them of this and they sent them back to the lab. Waited 2 more weeks and now I have my glasses. Lenses themselves are pretty good. Time will tell if they will yellow, scratch, etc. But right now, I have an new set of lenses in my glasses. Prescription is a good match as well. I just wish that their lab quality was better and that AFO's QC before calling the customer was better. One of my previous glasses was from Lux in palo alto. They had a similar issue with their rimless not being done properly, and they sent it back asap and notified me of the delay. I was not happy that they did that, but it was better than me discovering the problem and then requesting that it be fixed. read more

Dr. Lodenquai is the utmost professional when it comes to your eyes. Unlike some other optometrists where you feel like you're being rushed out for their next appointment. Dr. Lo really cares and takes the time to figure our the best treatment. She is without a doubt the best optometrist ever! My kids and I really like going to see Dr. Lodenquai! Dr. Lodenquai is great with kids and her new office has a great setup for kids. Dr. Lodenquai is very thorough with the eye exam. She asks me a lot of questions and makes good recommendations (like good contact lens and fish oil). Her staff is very friendly and professional. My husband recently got new eye glasses. She is extremely personable with a very good bedside manner especially for children. She is also very caring. My wife and I had been going to Dr. Lodenquai's for a few years, and we are thoroughly impressed by the friendliness and professionalism of Dr. Lodenquai and her staff. We actually were referred to her by another very satisfied client. They have an excellent selection of the latest styles, and her staff is great (and very patient) in helping us pick something. We've purchased prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contacts, and have been very happy with the results. Also, we've definitely broken a screw or scratched a lens, and they have been very quick and attentive to get them repaired very quickly. Dr. Lodenquai and her staff are some of the friendliest people I've met with, and they all have excellent knowledge in what is best for your eyes. We moved out to the East Coast, so we are sad we can't use Dr. Lodenquai's services anymore. But we will definitely stop in when we are back in the Bay Area to visit -- especially since we haven't found a similarly great optometrist out here yet! read more

I've used Dr. Lodenquai a few times over the years (once per year). She does a very thorough eye examination. Last year I went to an Ophthalmologist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation thinking I should have my eyes examined by an Ophthalmologist, since they are medical doctors. That was a mistake. I'm back with Dr. Lodenquai this year. With the PAMF Ophthalmologist, it felt like they just wanted to get my exam done and get me out so they can bill another patient. In contrast, Dr. Lodenquai takes time to check and double check. She told me about new contact lense technology and had me try samples to see how I liked them. She probably spent triple the amount of time that PAMF did making sure I was getting what I needed. Yes, there is a place for Ophthalmologists when you need eye surgery or have serious issues. But for annual eye exam checkups, I'll be sticking with Dr. Lodenquai. Some of the other reviews comment on the limited selection of eyeglass frames. it's true. They don't have as large of a selection as the large chain stores. But if you find a frame you like at one of the large chain stores, they can get it for you and make your prescription glasses. And they take most insurance. Not all the chain stores do. I have VSP and I found most chains (including Lenscrafters) do not accept VSP insurance. Dr. Lodenquai does. Dr. Lodenquai is okay. Her clinic is organized, friendly and clean. I didn't find her to be thorough however. For example she does not test near vision unless you ask her to. Additionally, each time she tries to convince me to get further expensive tests that are unnecessary. An okay experience for a few routine exams, but I stopped going there as I was not impressed by her medical examination. read more
