I can't recommend this place enough! If you're looking for a straightforward, affordable, and friendly smog check, Alvarez is the place to go. I had a frustrating experience just a few days ago at a different shop where my truck failed the smog check. The issue was with the OBDII monitoring, but the technician there was zero help--he didn't offer any explanation, just charged me the full fee and told me to "try again in a couple of days." I felt like I was just throwing money away. Coming to Alvarez was a completely different experience. Not only was the service fast, but the technician actually took the time to talk to me. He explained exactly why my truck failed previously and what I needed to do (drive cycles) before getting it tested again to ensure it would pass this time. Took my Chrysler 300 in for a smog test, was told I needed a star certified location, prior to leaving they put a scanner on the car to make sure it would pass, . I was referred to another location, and my car did pass the test. No B.S. from these guys, straight forward like it should be. The owner has a major attitude problem. I've gone to him a couple of times for a smog and he always comes up with excuses not to do it, or starts acting like a baby like it's going to be too much trouble. He said a couple of times that no one would want to work on my car. I went down the street to ABC smog and got it taken care of right away. Stay away from this dude... He's not worth the headache... Unless you're okay with dealing with a guy with a personality disorder. read more

After i was having some cooling system issues with my car I took it to Alvarez only to get an outrageous quote that I couldn't afford. I told him i was gonna take it elsewhere. After I said that to him he was very unprofessional and dismissive, acting like he didn't care or need my business. When I took it to another shop they noticed that I was missing my skid plate underneath the engine of my car. I called Alvarez about it and he said he had it. When I went back to the shop to have him put it on he just pointed at it from across the garage and said "there it is!" And that he was too busy to put it back on SMH Very unprofessional and child-like. I would never recommend anyone to this guy. read more

Literally took my car 30 minutes ago to get a smog test and it pass but as soon as I drove away, the check engine light and a rattling noise started. I went right back to this place and they didn't want to look at it. The son worked on it. They wouldn't allow me to see the cameras either. Whittier PD said they couldn't assist and it was now a civil suit. Avoid this place. read more

Bad service from owner. The son is very polite and helpful but can't do much for customers because dad tells him what to do. On phone dad/owner told us to retest its 20.00 so when we went to re-test the dad/owner told his son to charge 30.00 because my husband was rude to him on the phone. I stopped by here to get my smog check because it's conveniently located near the Whittier DMV. The owner was incredibly nice and he did my smog check within 15 minutes. I took my 2013 E350 BlueTec Diesel here today to get smogged based on the reviews I saw on Yelp. This is the best smog experience I have ever had. He quoted me $40 on the phone - and he charged me $40 when he was done. Very nice and super honest. Usually, when you show up in a Mercedes Benz - the price always goes up - not here. I took my car Thursday 09/20/2018 for an oil change. I was leaving out of town to Vegas that night. Mind you my car is two years old and had 9 miles when i bought it (obviously very new is my point) Anyways, my battery died on my way to Vegas. Hmmmm, how can the battery be giving out already? I mean it was DEAD like took a while to jump start it. When I got back I took my car to get a new battery and was told I had a very old used battery (NOT THE ONE THAT CAME WITH THE VEHICLE WHEN I PURCHASED IT) WOW!!! What thieves! That is the last place I took it to and there was no way it was anyone else because like I mentioned earlier I left out of town right after leaving that place! What a shame I thought I finally found a good mechanic! I referred them to friends, family and co workers. Two co workers and two family members have already went there thanks to me!! Maybe because I am a girl they didn't think I would catch on? Well you guys def messed with the wrong customer because everyone I referred will never go to this disgusting place again and I am going to the police to report this. Even if nothing happens now I do not care because this place at least will be reported and once a thief always a thief so when they act again and get reported eventually they will be caught! I agree with cc I, this guy will rip you off. I went for an oil change. 2 weeks later I took my car to a mechanic and he said I had no oil. At first I thought it was an oil leak, but ever since the mechanic added oil it hasn't been leaking. Now I am questioning whether Alvarez did anything he was suppose to do when you get an oil change. read more
