Absolutely fantastic donut shop! The donuts are fresh, soft, and perfectly sweet without being over the top. Great variety too--from classic glazed to fun specialty flavors--and everything we tried was delicious. The staff was friendly and quick, and the place had that classic donut shop vibe that just makes you want to come back. Easily a 5-star stop if you're craving a great donut and a cup of coffee.

Bacon dumplings.... I came for one thing and left with a breakfast bacon dumpling. A good pick.

Alvernon donut shop is the run-of-the-mill donut place that sells old-fashioned donuts, cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, you name it. What makes it stand out as they have all sorts of other options available for breakfast such as bacon, egg, stuffed pastries, hotdog wrapped in pastry dough, jalapeño poppers, ham and cheese croissant sandwiches, etc. This is a very convenient location and they have a drive-through window available. They sell coffee and other specialty drinks, bottles of milk, juices, and miscellaneous canned /bottled beverages. I think their donuts taste great and the price is on point. If you are going to Reid park Zoo, and are looking for a donut shop, you can get something to eat and something to drink very easily by just pulling up and ordering, and then getting back on Alvernon. If you are central and headed to the freeway on South on Alvernon, this spot if just south of Broadway. The staff are patient. even when it's busy inside, they are friendly and don not seem rushed. I've never seen the restaurant anything but spotlessly clean inside and out. There are a few inside seats/ tables. There's a lot of competition in this area, and yet Alvernon Donut Shop always seems to be bustling with business. Good for them.

National Donut Day is no joke in Tucson AZ! Already at 8 am there is a line of ppl out the door... they were ready though, tons of people on hand ready for orders! It was very overwhelming, everything looked amazing and fresh!!! I will probably keep this place in normal rotation! Crumb donut, one I typically am not a fan, was actually the stand out! Raspberry jelly donut was ok, not a fan of how bitter raspberries can taste, wish more places carried strawberry!

It was too early to get fried chicken, but was able to pick up a variety of donuts for my co-workers. I was very appreciative of the large and smaller sized versions of apple fritters and cinnamon roll. Besides those, I had bought some old fashions, jelly filled glaze, twists, and bacon maple bars. All of it was great. All were very soft, fresh, and not overly sweet. Sometimes, a lower quality donut will leave your mouth feeling greasy or leaves an odd feeling/taste and these didn't do that. Their yeast and cake donuts are really good and I like them a lot better than the competition in this area. Alvernon's isn't too close to my office and far away from home, but I am going to go back to try the fried chicken and any other savory items.

It was just melt in your mouth fabulous. I love donuts. I always have. They surprised me with adding a couple donuts holes. This is my new favorite donuts shop in town. Love them. Tried the chocolate frosted and I just was perfect. Makes me wanna go back and get more

    Yum!

This donut shop makes some GREAT DONUTS! Continue reading if you want more details. The donuts are light and fluffy. They taste fresh. The staff member was friendly and attentive. Just a heads up they are updating their menu and they will post a new menu when completed. Thus, at the moment there is not a menu in the store to review. And yesterday they did not have any croissants - although I had chosen the croissant based on a previous photo of the menu here on Yelp. The little shop appears to be going through some transitions but it is delicious.

This small family owned business has some of the best fried chicken I've had in my life. The doughnuts are very delicious too.

And for all that, the price per donut was darn fair. Fast-forward to the last 2x I went there (2025) to bring home a maple bar for the spouse and a few to have for the rest of the family. They were a little better than most grocery store donuts. BUT. Not as good as they used to be. Don't know what happened, but they are middle of the road now, at best. The very last time I went the maple bars were dry, smaller and not the same. New baker? New recipe? Complacency? Idk, but my local Dunkin (Sandario) is now noticeably better or equivalent and a much shorter drive. Service is no frills. Don't have anything to say about the ambiance as I've only driven thru. Overall, okay, but nothing to get excited about. And my coffee was not worth reviewing. Maybe one day I'll try them again and see if they've improved.

Specifically, I tried the Maple Glazed Cronut and it was amazing!!!! They somehow managed to take everything I love about a croissant, perfectly crispy yet soft and flaky layers, and turn it into this incredible doughnut situation. The maple glaze on top was the perfect finishing touch and made the whole thing feel extra indulgent. I also tried the Brioche Berry Lemon Doughnut, which was very tasty. It had plenty of filling with a great balance of berry and lemon, and the outside was pillowy soft with a sugar coating that made every bite even better. Both were delicious in completely different ways, and I already know I will be back to try more. Cal's is definitely a spot worth checking out if you love creative pastries and really well made doughnuts. I suggest getting there earlier if possible to get the best selection as the cashier told me they usually sell out very quickly.
