To set the scene... It's Friday afternoon and am going to a concert later with a bunch of friends I haven't seen in months. And, after years of wearing my hair long, I decide that it is finally time for "a new look". I ended up going to a barbershop that I'll leave unnamed and, on a whim, told the guy "do whatever you want". It was just like any Rom-Com makeover scene, except I was left roaming the streets with a floppy hipster bowl cut desperately searching for another place that could cut my hair at 6:50 on a Friday night. Everything was closed. I was defeated, it would take months to grow my hair back out. On my way home I came across Amici Salon... HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. If you go to this salon, please please either read the Yelp reviews first and DON'T go to the owner Ahmad (or Ahmed). I went to him 6 months ago for a cut and color. The whole time I was in the chair he was making inappropriate jokes and at times seemed very sexually inappropriate. He was easily getting distracted while talking to his coworkers and seemed sloppy, as if he was either drunk or on drugs. He smelled like an overwhelming scent of cigarettes and cheap cologne. I felt a bit uneasy, but figured since it was the owner it would come out nice. After his assistant shampooed my hair, I noticed the color was a lot redder than I had wanted and the front of my hair had a different shade than the back did. I also noticed some pieces of hair were not even colored in at all, which he must have missed those spots. I wanted to cry and told him right away I wasn't happy with the color. He rudely said it was just wet and would look perfect after it was dried. After my hair was blow dried, the color looked even worse. The whole time he was saying how gorgeous the color looked while the WHOLE time I wanted to cry. When he started cutting my hair, I told him I wanted a straight even trim. After he was done, I had messy layers all over the place. When I told him repeatedly I wasn't happy with the results, he was extremely rude telling me my hair wasn't in the best condition so it didn't take color well..... I've NEVER had this issue anywhere else.... EVER. He ended up charging me over $275 for my hair to come out looking like a shitshow and didn't even offer to take anything off due to his carelessness. I don't trust anyone else to handle my haircut and color. I have been to many salons, Newbury, Cambridge, Lexington and none have matched the quality. I had almost the exact same experience as Janice M. a few weeks ago when I went in for a spontaneous cut. Ahmad, the owner of the salon, cut my hair and I have never had such a horrible haircut in my life. Similar to Janice, as soon as I sat in his chair I had an uneasy feeling, and he also made inappropriate jokes to his staff, making one of the other female stylists look extremely uncomfortable. I told him I wanted the same length, but just a tiny trip and some shaping around my face. I showed him pictures where the pieces around the face went down to my mouth. I ended up with bangs about one inch long that I've now had to pin back for the past three weeks because they do not sit flatly. He also added in some layers that are above my ear, meaning I have to use even more pins to keep my hair down. Just like Janice, once he was done he kept saying how gorgeous it looked, even though the other stylists who saw it were visibly uncomfortable and could see how unhappy I was. He also, when finished cutting my hair, said "can you believe that you just let someone who's only cut hair for three months do your hair?!". At the time, I thought he was joking, since he owns the salon, but now I realize that he probably was not joking and only cuts hair every once and a while when he feels like it. If you go here, avoid Ahmad like the plague! He will destroy your hair and then gaslight you so you feel like you're being crazy until you get home and realize what he just did. read more

I saw a Groupon for brazilian wax and decided to try this salon for the first time. When I arrived the lady came to get me and walked me into the skincare room, closed the door, and then asked me what I was there for. She wasnt prepared or told in advance that I was there for a wax...but *shrug* thats fine. When I told her brazilian she said okay and started to set up. I'm thinking...ummm...I need to undress? She made no move or comment so I said to her: "Well, I have to undress"...she just said "ok" and continued to stay in the room. Alright...fine and I went along with it without privacy. As she started to wax, she never tested the temp of the wax and it proceeded to burn my skin each time. She didn't seem to know what she was doing at all. placing small glops of wax and random strips on top, barely gave it time to stick before she yanked it off. I get waxed pretty regularly and never has it been this painful. Because she never waited long enough for the strips to stick, she ended up having to go back to certain areas several times tapping wax here and there without system. When she was finally done I had so much sticky wax on me that my dress stuck to me as I walked out the door. Needless to say...never coming back for a wax again. Since the age of 11, I have had my eyebrows threaded. As an Indian woman, this somehow got inculcated into my regular maintenance regimen, and I have refused to let anything else near my eyebrows. Thanks to my parents' great genes, I've received some seriously awesome full eyebrows that, if not maintained properly, grow into something they would use as a make up prop in "The Wolf Man." When I moved up to Boston for college, I tried desperately to find a good place in the city that did eyebrow threading. I went to one location on Newbury for a few years and they were ok...just did a quick thread that sometimes I would have to adjust later because they were uneven or missed a few hairs.Pretty annoying, since I was paying $15 when in Jersey I only paid $5-10 for moderate work. I stumbled upon Amaci salon 2 years ago based on a review I read on eyebrow threading locations in Boston. Let me tell you, Anna is the best I've ever been to in 13 years. She's Moroccan, so she knows what she's doing (I know this is a bit biased, but in my experience Middle Eastern and Indian women have had the most amount of skill in threading--it's where threading originated from!) She listens to what you want, but at the same time will give advice on what would be the best look for your face. She's fast, pain-free, and takes time to trim your eyebrows and tweeze any stray hairs that may have averted the thread (yes, only time I will let tweezers near my eyebrows). She's VERY friendly, very sweet, and will do her best to hook you up with deals when she can. I've been going to her for the past 2 years, and won't really look at anyone else. NOTE: This is the most I've paid for eyebrow threading, but it's expected when a) you live in a city like Boston, and b) finding a skilled person in eyebrow threading is rare. $18 for an eyebrow thread, but it's only $3 more than the place I used to go to, and about 400 times better. read more

I normally take the hike to Smita's Botique in Burlington for my brows. $6 is the best deal in town and she is so skilled. Not convenient in the least given that I live and work in the city. Tonight is the holiday party and I was in a last minute pinch. I booked with Anna at Amaci because Ghada at Michelle's was fully booked for the next week (no joke). I'm so glad I bit the bullet. Anna is: 1. Super sweet 2. Totally gentle 3. Knows what she's doing - is from Morocco 4. Makes threading relaxing - you get to lay down. 5. I went to Amaci after buying a Groupon that was $49 for a haircut, blowdry and $60 worth of "skin services" which were supposed to include waxing and threading. Quoted in the discussion on the Groupon page: "I hope we can use it at more than one appointment, otherwise our only option to use up that $60 for skin services is getting your entire face threaded." The Groupon staff responded: "you will be able to use the skin service value at more than one point." I used the haircut and one threading a few weeks ago, and was pleased with the results (cute angled bob with some backcutting and bangs plus nice eyebrows). Today I went to use up another $18 of my $60, but was told that I could only use the haircut on one day and waxing/threading on another. I was extremely displeased with the customer service and will definitely not be going back again. There are way too many salons in the area with better prices and better customer service to bother going back. read more

I really can't recommend this salon at all. I was new in town, and needed a Matrix salon, and someone who supposedly knew curly hair. In the end, I didn't feel as if Ahmad valued my time/patronage whatsoever, and my hair looked the worst it ever had (grays in less than three weeks!) I cannot even believe I gave this place three chances. Fool me once, fool me twice...I'm the idiot for going back the third time. Well, Ahmad was really awful, from turning my hair red (and then telling me it was the lighting and it'd soften in a few days), to pressuring me to buy products, to barking at his staff, to giving me the hard upsell on more treatments, to dying my brows into two giant brown misshapen caterpillars (which were fixed by the shampoo woman sending me to the amazing threading woman, and then CHARGING ME for it). There was also a wait of _70_ minutes/double-booking situation on my second visit, and the fact that Ahmad and staff talk about the customers in another language.... The really funny thing about the whole experience with Amaci was that I went to a new salon in Brookline, and, well, apparently Ahmad is famous. And not in a good way. They knew all about him, how he treats his customers and staff. So I didn't feel like a crazy-pants for the way he was so manipulative and smarmy (which included him saying things like, "You'd better not write a bad Yelp review....") after I politely expressed my frustration with my color, wait times and the eyebrow incident. Sorry Ahmad, that ship sailed with the eyebrow dying/threading incident and when you lied about where you were while keeping two customers waiting. Unless you need eyebrow threading (or want to be treated badly), don't go to Amaci. (FWIW, the eyebrow threading lady is AH-mazing, BTW). read more

This review is long over due, as in 5 months overdue. I bought a Brazilian wax with Anna in October and it was the worst wax experience I've ever had. The job itself was very quick, which was great. However, when i left the salon and start walking home, I started experiencing a terrible burning sensation and pain. When I got home, I checked out what the problem was because I've had plenty of waxes before, and sure enough, I had huge red burn marks on my private area!! When she was waxing me, she kept re-waxing a certain area (ouch!), which led her to rip off my skin. It even hurt to pee for the couple days (TMI?) And just to clarify, this wasn't just your typical swelling that usually occurs after a wax, these were open wounds/burns that bled. Threading: I recently moved, and on my usual walk to Chinatown I would pass by Amaci Salon. I noticed only a month ago that they offered threading. Anyone whose standard beauty routine involves eyebrow threading will tell you it is sometimes worth it to take that 4 hour bus ride to NY for the lack of good, affordable, risk-free threading in Boston. I have been to Sun City Tanning, at their Harvard and Newbury locations, which tends to be a hit or miss. So I invited my girlfriend to give it a try with me one evening. We were nervous, and tried to ply Amma - the sweet Moroccan lady that performs the threading at Amaci - with our exact requests. She not only took our advice on board, she was meticulous, and threaded, trimmed, and tweezed our brows with precision. She has also had similar grievances with women taking over and threading however they like, so she was sympathetic. A little pricey, but first timers can get a $4 off this $20 service. Expensive, but t beats taking the bus to NY. read more

I got my eyebrows threaded here, and the lady did a good job. The reason for 3 stars is that I'm spoiled by NYC where threading costs at most $15 (including tip). It cost $25 at Amaci Salon. I wish I knew more about the Boston salon scene, but $25 is too much for me for just threading. Otherwise, the salon is bright, comfortable, and clean. I spent years (at least 4+) trying to find a suitable salon, wasted hundreds on haircuts and coloring that I hated/had to get redone/quick fix myself, and all along, Amaci was right under my nose. Such a shame that I'm leaving Boston in a couple months because I would for absolute sure be a regular here. About a month ago, I got my haircut at a Chinatown salon, assuming that they would be able to deal with the "coarse Asian hair." Boy was I wrong. One of the worst cuts I've ever gotten. I let it grow out, hoping that it would mask its own flaws. Enough was enough, and I booked an appt with Amaci using their convenient online booking. Came in, and the front desk was really polite; such a plus. Nothing worse than coming into a new business just to feel like you shouldn't have, so I definitely appreciated that Amaci was so welcoming!! My stylist was Aretha Melo. Aretha is so nice, fun to talk to, and I think most importantly, she listened to what I wanted and was able to successfully deliver. I laid out what I wanted, and she made sure to let me know what was possible, balancing reality and expectations (considering my hair was a mess before). She has a great attention to detail and made sure at various steps that I was happy with what she was doing with my hair. Certainly the best cut I've had in years, if not ever. I'm not going to lie. After years of disappointment, I wasn't sure of what to expect, but I highly recommend this place, no doubt. Especially, Aretha! She seriously blew me away and I am so grateful that I finally have gotten a cut that I love. I think I originally never came to the salon because I wasn't too fond of the price tag ($58 for a cut [ok it's not THAT much, but I'm a poor student lol]), BUT honestly, it's so worth it. So I just sucked it up and decided just to get a full haircut. WOW, Ahmad did a fantastic job on my hair. What seemed like forever, because I have A.D.D., turned out to be well worth it. This was a few years ago (Winter of 2008) but the memory still lingers... Had my eyebrows threaded for the first time and they looked nice. It was quite painful, but I could chalk that up to it being my first threading. However, the Brazilian wax is another story. With any good wax, one or two waxes over the same spot should suffice, followed by a little bit of tweezing. If the spot is repeatedly waxed, you can essentially rip off a thin layer of skin, huge no-no. Well, the aesthetician did just that. So painful, and not to mention I probably looked like a penguin walking down the street afterwards. Will definitely not be returning here for any type of wax! read more

Even though you can make an appointment online, sometimes their system is disorganized and you'll get a call from the host/receptionist that you have an appointment on a different date/time, so just double check and confirm your appointment. I first went to Amaci when I got a Groupon for two Brazilian waxes. I was extremely pleased with my experience! Anna is the sweetest, and cares about doing a good job, even following up with some tweezing if necessary. I started as a Groupon customer and have continued to go back because of the atmosphere Anna creates. She even convinced me to start getting waxed every month, which I would have NEVER considered before but it finally seems worth the expense. When I complain about spending too much, she tries to help me find a deal if she can. At our last appointment I suggested Amaci start selling waxing series, so you get a discount if you purchase multiple waxes. Anna said she would talk to her boss, so I hope they can make this happen because it would DEFINITELY allow me to continue as a customer. The reason I gave 4 starts and not 5 is the wait time. Even with appointments, I often have to wait at least 20 minutes to see Anna, potentially due to appointments only being 15 minutes long. This also causes the appointment to sometimes feel rushed, which is not the best feeling when you are having such a delicate area taken care of. Overall, love my experience here! read more

Got a haircut and wax here a few months back with a Groupon. The haircut was pretty good, I got a ton of compliments on it. The stylist was a little bit rough when blowdrying my hair though and tugged at it a few times and scratched my ear with the brush as well. The wax was also pretty good, but the girl was messy and got some wax on my pants and almost got some in my eye. Overall, good results, but the stylist and waxer could have been a little more meticulous when doing things. read more

I have been going Amad for about 10 years now on and off (due to work travel) and I have nothing but good things to say. Over the years he has stayed on top of current hair/color trends and will not lead you a stray with his recommendations. He runs a professional shop and his coloring ability is top notch. He is able to run the full spectrum of natural high/lo combination and all the way to fun chunky dramatic highlighted contrasts. The best thing about the way he color and cuts is they all grow out insanely natural. You never get straight up roots like most places he does it so it all blends in naturally as it grows out. I have SUPER thick hair and it's the only place I can go to have it naturally thinned out and not get a lot of frizzy layers that make my hair look shaggy. I originally came in for the brazilian wax Groupon that I found online, but ended up getting my hair cut as well, as they offered 20% for new customers. From the first moment of walking in, I was already impressed with the salon. Friendly, clean, and extremely hospitable. The girl at the front desk was very sweet and polite. I hadn't gotten my hair cut in a year because I was too scared to find someone that would butcher my hair, as has happened a few times in Boston before... I have gone to several places in Boston on Newbury St, and in Wellesley, and nothing compared to the cleanliness and professionalism of the girl - Anna - who works there. I would go with 0 stars if I could. I had a really bad experience at this salon. If you have dark hair I don't recommend this salon at all. I went to this place and asked for a darker color for my bangs and basically the front of my head and a fresh light color for the bottoms of it( I already had very light bottoms). I also explained that I am looking for a very cool Ashy brown and hate it when the hair gets orange or red. They bleached my hair (even on the front which was supposed to get darker) and got it damaged and gave me a color that I hated. At the end, My hair was black at the top, orange in between and a cool blond at the ends. If the picture I'm posting here is your definition of balayage then try this place .. This all happened when I was planing to go to a wedding in 2 days, heading to Canada and was very busy. When I went to another salon to fix it( only because I lost the trust in them and thought if they did this on the first round they either don't have the experience or are not listening to what their customer wants) I called them, went there and said I'm not happy with the color and the owner didn't even accept the mistakes they made on my hair and didn't reimburse me saying that I had a week to go to them to fix it. I honestly read the other reviews after that happened and thought I shouldn't trust them anymore.
