It's been a while since I came here, but have been meaning to write a review. I came in for a consultation to get partial highlights and everything seemed fine. Then when I came back for my appointment, I was pushed into getting full highlights (which are so much more expensive and damaging). I told the stylist that my hair was too susceptible to chemical damage and I wanted minimal highlights, and was rebuffed with the claim that I needed more and they would absolutely not damage my hair (that's just never true). I don't know why I didn't just leave. I went along with it, and after she finished she showed me my hair and it looked Terrible and uneven! I showed her places to fix it, and she tried to, but it was still brassy, uneven and very damaged. I was told to keep my hair in a certain part to make it look better... I came here a few months ago and had an excellent experience with Andrea. However I made a second appointment for a root touchup only. I was there for 2 and half hours. Andrea was too busy, the young tech was the person who did the coloring, shampoo, etc. When it got to be 2 and a half hours, the tech asked if I wanted to wait for a blow dry with Andrea or sit back under the dryer to which I replied "whatever will be the quickest," to which the tech literally brought over a hair dryer and brush and MADE ME BLOW MY OWN HAIR OUT. I was absolutely appalled. I have NEVER experienced such terrible customer service and I will not be returning. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I most definitely would. I made an appointment back in November for a haircut. Daniela was my stylist. I brought in three pictures of my OWN hair from a previous haircut. I have curly hair and I asked for about three inches cut off, the layers to be cleaned up and my bangs cut shorter. She nodded and went to work. Apparently she had decided to totally disregard my pictures and explanations and cut off approximately SIX inches of my hair. When she turned my around I told her that I was unhappy and that it looked like a bowl haircut. Basically she had butchered it - it was incredibly short on the top and bottom layers and not ANYTHING like I had asked for. She told me that I should go home and use the straightening iron on it, because if she did it, she'd have to charge me extra. Seriously? I think she realized how absurd she was being and she decided to try the straightening iron. Lo and behold, it still looked AWFUL - most likely because she had ruined my hair entirely. It took everything I had not to cry in the chair. She told me to go home, wash it and try it curly to see if I'd like it more. I knew that I wouldn't, but I felt so uncomfortable that I just wanted to get out of there. At one point she got hostile with me, saying that this was the haircut I'd asked for (LIES). And then she turned around and said "Don't go and write me a bad review on yelp or anything!". Thanks for the idea! The only redeeming quality for this salon was Ornella, I called the next morning and told her about my experience and she offered to refund me, as I refused to let anyone in that salon, regardless of their skill level, ever go near my hair again. All in all, the most traumatizing hair cut of my life. Had Daniela apologized and fessed up to doing a terrible job, I would have been a lot less upset. Michelle is a nice and attentive stylist. Can't say I love my hair or that I'll go back to see her again. But if you have boring hair - I bet she would do a good job with it. Me, I have a slightly edgy look. All texture. Japanese popstar meets Carol Brady meets Williamsburg. Asians get it and hipsters get it. Mainstream hairdressers, not so much. Michelle cut the top layers uber short which I think was an odd choice. My hair looked "ok" when I left the salon after she had thinning-sheared the hell out it. Since then, every morning I've been battling it out with a flat iron, cursing at my reflection in the medicine cabinet. And no, it isn't growing in well. So much for that theory. Michelle gave it her all. I think my haircut was outside her repertoire. Most of the stylists in Femia have long hair with long layers and foiled highlights. The kind of locks that go well with stilettos. Eh, it was 35 bucks. I've had worse. In a few weeks I'll get it fixed. read more

Like other yelpers who gave one star, I had Daniela cut my hair. On a whim I decided to try a new place and took whichever stylist they set me up with. Big mistake. My hair was in the process of going from a short, choppy style to a chin length bob that I was very excited to continue growing. Without even listening to what I wanted, Daniela sat me down and just started whacking at my hair, speaking to herself out loud "what are all of these layers? I am so confused," and so on. Before I knew it, my hair was cut practically to the hairline in the back and I ended up with uneven sides on the front. My upset was obvious as she kept saying, while she was haphazardly chopping, that it would grow out so evenly and be adorable. That's great, but for now, as one of my friend's so honestly described it, I look like a piece from a lego set with football helmet, painted on hair. I am going to my normal stylist to get it re-cut into a messy pixie this Saturday and saying goodbye to my dreams of pony-tail length hair, having only Daniela to thank for that. read more

Oh joy! I've finally found a hair salon that's the perfect mix of laid back luxury and value. My friend recommended Salon Femia after getting a really beautiful, modern, yet simple cut there. Historically, i've been unsatisfied with the styles and service rendered by other salons in the area. Many times i've felt like I didn't quite get what I asked for and my tastes didn't quite mesh with the person cutting my hair. Owned by two sisters, Salon Femia is a clean and comfy salon with a friendly and professional staff. Daniella cut my hair and I was extremely pleased with the results. Daniella was professional and talented and had those great, firm stylist hands. She both listened to my requests and asked the right questions to ensure my style fit my lifestyle. I'm not big on maintenance and Daniella gave me a cut that looks great without tons of product and a contortionist blow drying session. She also suggested the best products and styling techniques for my cut. At $35 for a womens cut and dry, I think this place is a great value. I've paid $50 and up for styles and not been as pleased as I am with Salon Femia. YAY! read more

My girlfriend thinks my eyebrows look saucy, and I have Linda at Femia to thank for it. My last eyebrow job (care of Judy Jetson) left my whole eye area red for about 8 hours and I had small bruises under my brow bone for a few days after that. So I had been hoping for an early AM appointment as I have a graduation party this evening. The earliest they could book me in with Linda was at noon. So I took the appt., but with trepidation. I approached Femia-- it doesn't look like much from the outside. I went in and it was small, but cute. Then I realized that I was in the straightest hair salon I'd been in since I was in high school and my mom was choosing the place. Not a "Faaaabulous," or a "girl-FRIEND" was to be heard. There was just a bunch of over-tanned hair-stylist women. It was saddening, since I'm used to the gay man hair crowd. Linda took me into the aesthetician room-- it was bright (but not scary) and clean. She was SUPER thorough. She would step back to look, and half the time, I'd expect her to close one eye and hold her thumb out like a painter. She also told me I have great brow bones and unusual eyes-- and that I could believe her because she does this all day long. I don't care if she was lying or not, it made me feel good. At 2pm, I looked in the mirror, and all the redness was gone. We'll see tomorrow if I'm bruising, but I think I'm in the clear. My one negative star for this place was that the salon side was empty and the stylists were goofing around and talking really loudly which was distracting....and the music sucked. Avoid this place at all costs. The woman who did my eyebrow / lip waxing literally ripped off my skin, and then tried to convince me that it is OK. She was a total bully. Not only the people who work here disrespect their clients, they also disrespect one another. They are insulting, and they are abusive to interns/receptionist minorities who work there. They have no problem yelling at them in front of you. Who knows what is happening behind the scenes? Terrible. Just for this reason alone, facilities like this place should not be supported. My Salon Femia experience can be summed up as follows: the problem with first impressions is that you only get one. I was mentally writing my acerbic, one-star review as the minutes dragged past my appointment time; twenty minutes and two patrons who arrived after me and got seen before me later, I was escorted to the hair-washing sinks by a seemingly frazzled receptionist pulling double-duty; meanwhile, my stylist Andrea took someone else after totally judging me for how long it had been since my last haircut. I overheard that my big, long curly hair would be straightened first and cut dry later, and instantly my panic button was hit: the receptionist is washing my hair, my stylist seems totally out-of-sorts, and I was about to get a dry cut. What sort of corners-cutting nonsense was this? Well, hush up Tamar, because it went so uphill so quickly I almost got washing sink divot whiplash. First of all, the frazzled receptionist is actually Christina, an adorable and utterly attentive hair-student-cum-massage therapist (the scalp massage I received while she washed my hair was literally worth double the price of admission), who took the time to talk me through every action and product with a sincere appreciation for the art of the serum. When I was eventually handed off to Andrea (an hour after my appointment was supposed to start, but hey, thanks to that massage I genuinely wasn't counting anymore), I was treated to one of the most thorough and lovely blow-drys of my life, and, quite accurately, one of the most even snips. Turns out dry cuts don't have to be that bad--dry, straight cuts have probably given me an extremely even and precise cut for my cascading curls. By this point, we were all friends, kibbitzing about boyfriends and mousses and how nice I looked with a side-part. The grand total came to $50, not $35 (due to the long hair and blow dry and such), but it felt justified--my hair looks great, I have new ladies with whom to gossip, and I'm rather confident that next time all first impression doubts will have been swept away like so many gently fallen hair scraps. read more

I wish I remembered the name of the woman who cut my hair, but I threw out the card due to my overall dissatisfaction. While I am in general okay with my hair cut, it seemed like the hair stylist did very little. She cut off less than what I requested, and didn't do the layers I asked for. In fact, she did so little to my hair, I wasn't even sure she cut anything until I looked to the floor and saw a small bit of hair-- but definitely not enough hair considering what I requested. The hair cut in and of itself wouldn't have warranted 2 stars-- I mean, I was disappointed and confused, but my hair looked a bit more fresh, which is what I was generally aiming for. Unfortunately, what made my experience a rather negative one was the fact that my hair stylist barely looked at me and completely ignored me while cutting my hair. She spent the ENTIRE time looking out the window to laugh and talk loudly about passer-bys with the other hair stylist, rather than actually looking and talking to me. No effort was made to talk to me apart from the initial "what do you want?" conversation. Now, I'm not a chatty person, but surely I deserved more attention than I received, especially since all of her attention was directed to people who weren't paying for her services. After all of this, I was rushed out so that the woman could cut someone else's hair-- someone who she obviously knew and would prefer to hang out with, as opposed to me. I think this would be a good hair salon if you already have a relationship built with the hair stylists, but if you're going in brand-new, this isn't the most courteous or professional hair salon. I totally agree with Lynda J. I was reading her review and I literally could have written the exact same thing. My former stylist left me to open her own shop in the suburbs. Lame! So I was forced to find somewhere and someone new. This place is close to where I live and very convenient. Michelle did an amazing job. I have very thick hair, and this girl knows how to layer! I was a little nervous at first because she was so quiet. But it was really nice just to sit there and not have to make small talk. Linda did my lip and brows. I have very sensitive skin. I'm usually red for hours. I had even switched to threading because waxing was just too harsh. Not with Linda. She was excellent. Prices are very reasonable. They use good quality products. So, I've gone to Salon Femia probably five times in the past, everytime to Danialla. The cuts have been fine and by being Really perky I was able to edge into the conversations they were having amongst themselves. Otherwise, I would have been a fly on the wall, which is O.K. except you feel like they're not paying any attention to you and, thus, your hair, especailly if they won't even look at you or, gasp, the picture you brought in. I went yesterday and had one of the worst salon experiences ever. She was rushed even though there was no one after me. She didn't listen to my begging and pleading to not take off much length (I've been trying to grow it out for a year and it's nary budged an inch b/c of her trimmings). She spilled my coffee which was placed right next to her coffee on the shelf and blamed me. She was distracted and talked about how she's going to law school soon. I walked out with uneven hair, a pissy aura, and a fear for our legal system. Listen, we all have bad days. But when you're affecting how someone looks for the next six weeks, bow out gracefully ahead of time if your head's not in it. I would much rather have rescheduled than have to try to manage this motley head of hair. Maybe there's such a thing as hair court - I'll have to look into it. read more

After seeing the reviews here, I booked myself for a cut with Michelle and an eyebrow wax. Michelle was great - I gave her minimal direction (this is what I want the end result to be but I don't care how you get there), she asked me a few questions along the way (are the bangs short enough? do you want to angle it?) but she wasn't chatty, which I appreciated. I'm not chatty either. My eyebrow wax was with Linda, and she was amazing! She told me what was wrong with my eyebrows, where I overplucked, and what she wanted to do next time. I really appreciated what she had to say - I'd never had someone tell me what I was doing wrong when I tried to maintain my eyebrows before! I left with the order of where I could pluck if I really, really had to before my next appointment. I went back for my second appointment with Linda on Thursday (five weeks after my first one) and it was just as positive experience as the first. I also love that the prices here are completely reasonable. You can pay for the services with credit card, but tips are cash only. read more

After I stopped coloring my hair, I was in search of a salon where I could get a good cut but without paying a ridiculous price. I did my online research and found that Salon Femia had the cheapest price in the area, $35 for a woman's haircut....sold! I have been there two times now and had Michelle as my stylist both times. As everyone else said, she is quiet, attentive, and fabulous! The layers and angles she suggested gave my hair so much more life. She will also style it however you want, just be sure to ask. I got it curly the first time and straight the second, both of which looked great. And the most amazing thing was that the cut really was just $35. I am used to going to salons that list one price, but then charge you so much more under the excuses that your hair is long or you got a blow dry. Nope, not this place. I went there last fall, and waited awhile to write this review in case in retrospect it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. Nope...it really was terrible. I got a brow wax and a highlight there. Both were disastrous. I don't like giving bad reviews - but man they were really really really bad. The woman doing my eyebrows kept cutting and waxing...all the while shaking her head and saying she didn't like how it was turning out. At the end they looked fine, I will admit - but I didn't feel that great about it after she finished and said "well it's fine for now, but I dont really like them. Come back next month and I can fix it." Needless to say she didn't get that opportunity. Highlights-wise, the girl doing my hair was so sweet and so nice, but after probably leaving my foils in for too long she looked at them and said "ummm...." and that was it. Then she said "I think you need a toner." I wanted warm brown highlights, and I walked out with brassy orange highlights - even after the toner. Also, they charged me for the toner, which wasn't that much money, but I didn't ask for the toner, and if they put it on because the highlights weren't the right color, I shouldn't have been charged for them. My go-to stylist is Andrea (and Linda does my brows). I can't say enough positive things about Andrea--her professionalism, attention to detail, and execution are all incredible--and I've never left with a haircut (or trim) that doesn't make me feel 100% better than I did before. She is truly a hair maestro, and makes my frizzy puffball mess look enviably gorge whenever I go in. Did I mention she's really, really nice too? I've been to a lot of hairstylists in my life, and through a lot of weird phases--from neon-dyed to asymmetrically-cut--the stylists at Femia could do anything along the "funky" continuum, but they also do classic and clean SPLENDIDLY. As I'm veering slightly more conservative in my hair choices on the brink of 3-0, Salon Femia is so very perfect! Also--Linda is a sweetheart and excellent at a sculpted brow that is not too thin and not too Ernie-and-Burt. Salon Femia is an Aveda salon, so you can pick up great products and get that tingly, scalp-massaging wash that feels like the best hair wash you've ever had. Go here. You won't be sad you did. The first time I had my hair cut here, it was decent. Not spectacular, nothing impressive, just a solidly okay haircut. The second time, however, I went in and SPECIFICALLY asked for something sleek and razor cut, with some body but no poufyness - and that above all I did not want to look like a soccer mom. That last part is important, because those are the exact words I used. I ended up with a cut that poufed everywhere. When she began styling, I stopped her and told her that wasn't even remotely what I wanted. She basically told me it was my fault because I hadn't brought in a picture of the exact cut I wanted - though I had given her a pretty good description and went through several books with her. What kind of competent stylist needs an exact picture to understand what the client wants? After I expressed my displeasure with what she'd done, she started copping a real attitude, yanked the brush through my hair, and piled on the styling products until my hair was frizzed out and flipped up at the ends. I looked exactly like Patty fucking Duke or some 50's housewife. Remember me mentioning that I specifically DID NOT WANT TO LOOK LIKE A SOCCER MOM? I was pissed and left no tip. However. The esthetician is fantastic. She went out of her way to try and make me feel better about my hair and did a fantastic job on my eyebrows, as she always does. This is my second review. After going here a few times I have grown tired of the price, the wait even with an appointment, and the service. My first experience was great, but since then it has been merely mediocre. The last time I went my hair-stylist didn't even wash my hair, she passed me off to some 14 year-old girl. The haircut took much longer than it should have (50 minutes for a guys cut?!) and I wasn't pleased with the result. It looked like I had been shaved with a #4 guard. I can do that at home for free! I have been going to Salon Femia for well over a year now, and have been nothing but thrilled with my experience. Daniela cuts my hair and does a fantastic job. Although my appointment was scheduled for 2:30, my hair didn't start getting washed until about 3:10, but they told me that they were running late and asked if I wanted to grab a coffee. I totally appreciated it! Ornella was the one who cut my hair and she did a great job. She totally understood what I wanted and she delivered 100%, while being gentle with my hair (which is a huge deal)! My cut was only $35, and they recommended products to help me with my new 'do. WARNING: They did take credit cards, but they don't accept tips on any debit or credit cards. It was a good thing that I had some extra time to spare so I could run to the ATM for some cash! This place is great! I went on a recommendation from my Mother, who in turn was recommended by one of her clients. I have very curly hair, and therefore need someone with a lot of experience. Additionally, whenever I go to a new salon, I always have them straighten my hair so that I can make sure they cut my hair evenly, Ornella of Salon Femia did a beautiful job! Christina, the receptionist/wash girl, was curious and thorough, giving a relaxing wash with a wonderful head massage. Ornella was good at giving me exactly what I wanted and doing it quickly, while also blowing out my hair to perfection in record time (I got compliments all the way home!) Linda waxes my brows at Salon Femia, and in the words of the girl who referred me to her, "She is a true artist." I have never had somebody take one look at me and size me up so quickly. She gave me the exact right brow shape for my style and personality. Working with her is practically like seeing a mystic. And she is thorough. She regularly spends 30 minutes on my brows to get them just right. She says she loves doing eyebrows, and her love for her work is evident. Many of my girlfriends trust only Linda with their eyebrows, and after going to her twice now I can see why. I have never had any other services at Salon Femia, so I cannot vouch for the quality of their other stylists, but Linda is amazing. read more

I moved to the Boston area about a year ago and one of my biggest upsets was leaving my hair stylist of 7-8 years back in Jersey. Up until now, I have avoided finding someone new and always scheduled any hair appointments conveniently when I knew I would be in Jersey visiting. I finally decided to bite the bullet and face my fears and try out someone new. I had previously come here to get my eyebrows waxed, so decided I might as well try getting my hair cut here as well. After reading through all the reviews once again, I decided to go with Michelle D. for my haircut. I'm so glad that I did. Much like what other people have mentioned, Michelle is pretty quiet and reserved. She has this feeling of such a down to earth girl who you could probably have an awesome conversation with, but she'd rather pay complete attention to your hair and focus on getting the cut just right for you than chatting away. Since I was so nervous about having someone new cut my hair, I was a little apprehensive at first when she started cutting, however halfway through I just had this feeling that I was going to love the end results and I did. Tucked back on a side street in Davis and looking like nothing more than a medium sized house from the outside - the place opens up to a fancy salon with a friendly, hospitable staff. Linda is the woman for waxing - and she's fantastic. However, although the place technically offers massages, they hardly ever actually do them, and this is the one service I would definitely recommend going elsewhere for. All the staff does a great job with hair. The prices are average to slightly below average compared with anywhere else in the major Boston area - and well worth your money. read more

I was very hesitant - trying a new place and all, so I asked her to only clean them up. She did an amazing job. I continue to go to her and will never leave her. She is awesome! Just like a previous reviewer said, she is an artist and she takes her time, which I am very grateful for! She has the expertise to look at the shape of your face and the type of eyebrow hair you have to determine the best style/shape your brows should be. The experience is always relaxing . . .yes, I said relaxing while referring to someone putting hot wax and then tearing it away from my skin. Linda is so nice and gentle and takes pride in her work. I always enjoy seeing her - she is always happy and just a warm person. Last winter I tried one of the Aveda facials. Linda did a wonderful job. I would have enjoyed it much more if Linda's soothing music from her ipod did not have to compete with the main salon room next door where sounds of shrilly gossip and bad dance music came from. If you do not mind background noise during this type of service, its worth it because of how great Linda is. Otherwise, save your facials for some place else. I got one of the best hair cuts of my life the other day by Andrea. I was way overdue for a hair cut, and mostly putting my long hair up. She cut off all of the split ends and created volume and bounce while still keeping the length. Then she spent some time advising me how to style it. This is my first Yelp review and I'm only posting this because Andrea is AMAZING. I walked in near the end of the day anticipating to be shooed away for not having made an appointment, or to wait around for an hour before I could get my cut. This was not the case- I was taken care of immediately and had the most thorough, relaxing, and informative haircut of my life! Andrea took her time and discussed everything she planned on doing before reaching for the scissors. I let her know that I'm trying to grow my hair out long, and she not only honored my request but somehow made my hair look even LONGER. I didn't know that was possible. I highly recommend her for anyone who has thick, wavy and unruly hair. I will definitely be back for another cut! read more

I, too, tried Salon Femia based on Yelp reviews. I had been going to Judy Jetson for a year or so, but I was tempted away by the cheaper prices here. My two visits have yielded some unexpected, though ultimately great, results. First time, Andrea cut my hair. She did a fabulous job, and gave me some helpful tips on maintaining my style (the cut I was getting a Judy Jetson tended to grow out in an unattractive way - not good for someone who hates getting her hair cut more than 4x a year). I was a little shocked to find myself with bangs, which I haven't had since I was 6 and had not asked for, but I ended up loving them (thankfully they're swept to the side). On my second visit, Daniela cut my hair. I was a little put off that she decided to cut it dry. I asked her to just cut an inch or so off but keep the basic multi-layered style I had. I tilted my head down to allow her to trim the back, and, when I looked up, I had a bob that I had not asked for! I gave a pathetic whimper of complaint, but didn't persist since the hair was already gone. It took me a day or so to get over it, but I ended up really loving the style. I used to get bobs all the time and I decided they made me look like a kid, but this one is great. I took off a star for the surprise factor, but I will keep going back to Salon Femia because they do a fabulous job. If you are really particular about your haircut, either make sure you can explain very precisely what you want (I admit - I don't do this well), or go somewhere else. But if you are happy to put your hair in the hands of an expert and be surprised - go here! read more

I just had a great experience at Salon Femia. I went in for an appointment with Michelle looking to cut off a good three inches from my hair, as well as get blond highlights. I moved here from New York city and I was very 'wary' of a somerville salon. As soon as I walked in I knew I was going to like it though. The women were all very friendly and all seemed to know each other. When Michelle came over she was very welcoming and sat and listened to me while I explained what I was looking for. She was very good at being receptive to my particular styling. She was also very confident in what she was doing, which made me feel much more at ease. Overall I was very happy with the results and I cannot wait to go back there again. I would highly recommend this place!!! read more
