Amador Cellars is our only wine club membership in Plymouth (we also belong to Alpha Omega and Mumm in Napa, among others), and it is such a treasure. The estate looks like a rustic Italian vineyard and just exudes charm and pulchritude. The seating is comfortable and the golden oldies on the radio make tasting wine here such a pleasant delight. The staff is always courteous and attentive. The vineyard's border collie is an adorable de facto mascot whose appearances further add to the charm of this magical space. Oh, and the wines are some of the best in Amador County and rival even Napa estates. Amador Cellars' port (as well as the near port Rocky Point, which we affectionately call "port-ward") is one of the most amazingly delicious ports that we have ever had the pleasure of tasting, and not one of the wines on their list ever disappoints. Perhaps even more amazing is the low tasting fee of $5 (waived for members) and the low cost of the bottles of any of their fine wines, which are generally $20 to $30 a bottle before the member or case discount. Amador Cellars is an absolute gem and should be included on anyone's California wine list. It is a Plymouth estate that we will always visit and always be proud members of. read more

Such a beautiful tasting room in the middle of a vineyard. The owners have known us forever - they even remember we are from Texas and only visit once a year. The last time we went was Father's day 2023. We had a little table for 2 in the midst of the vineyard. They don't have a lot of wine to taste at one time, but the wines they have are fabulous. On a birthday trip out to Amador county, my husband and I came to Amador Cellars on our second stop of the day. Mostly we made the reservation because they were dog friendly but we thoroughly enjoyed our flight tasting and the hospitality. We had forgotten that we had actually been out here once before for a friend's birthday, when they rented out the barn. Now, due to Covid, they are using the barn area for their wine tasting. Small and intimate tasting room. The 2 ladies working during this dreary Wednesday were a pleasant treat. The conversation was fun, the atmosphere was relaxed and the fresh flowers were an added touch. There is a small area with retail items and there was a relaxed lab named Cali hanging out in the doorway. The lack of signage had you first guessing where to go, but the seating area outside the doors were a clue of where to go for a sip. Small tasting fee for this location, but worth it. The next time we are in town we anticipate stopping again, tasting and bringing some wine home with us. Disappointed we didn't snatch up a few bottles at the time. read more

A small family run winery that makes fantastic wine. The Long family, Mom, Dad, Son and Daughter are running everything. Michael (son) is the head winemaker and really knows what he is doing and wants the wine to be and speak for itself. They produce some Italian varietals as well as Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and some blends. While they offer many great bottles, some highlights for me were: 2014 Farmhouse Blend was fabulous; a perfect marriage of Zin, Barbera, PS & Aglianico. 2012 Aglianico is dark with ripe berries; spicy, earthy and rustic. Just lovely. 2015 PS was spicy with dark berries, a touch of oak and good tannins. Amador Cellars needs to be on your must visit list for Amador County not just because their wine is great, but you can feel the pride and love that the Long Family puts into it. read more

From our initial reservation to our ordering of wine to be delivered to two different addresses, the staff was friendly and helpful, serving the best wine that we found along the wine trail. We ordered their rose and their Italian red blend, and I wish I had 10 more bottles of those. We narrowed down to these two, but we loved others among the tasting. Came here for a cool little event called "Behind the Cellar Door Amador Cellars". this was our first stop. Ok, so im going to pre-face this by saying ....yes... i went wine-tasting and did not taste any wines. I was the Designated driver. Here's the deal though... wine tasting is such an individual thing. Go buy a magazine on Tannin's or whatever. of all the wineries we went to.....this one by far had the most polite and informative people. it was way small but it was well done. everyone there had a story... and more importantly everyone in my group loved the wine...so there you go. read more

The barrel room here doubles as the tasting room. They are in a rustic "barn" with amazing Tuscan farmstead ambience. In the heat of the summer the concrete walls provide a refreshing place to stop in for great wine, views and people. I have been coming back for years, and this winery is one of the most consistent with quality and unique taste. They have remarkable, peppery Zins. These are distinctly different from Sonoma an Napa Zins. I favor these due to their pronounced fruit and complex flavor. They also make a great Barbera. Rhone/Italian style wines 6 Zins were all too spicy or peppery for my palate. That's just me. I love spicy and pepper in my food, just not in my wine. I am sure these were really good for people who like that style of zin. Barbera had a nice balance and I thought it equal to Cooper Winery Barbera. Syrah was surprisingly spicy, so I didn't want it. Amador Cellars is out in the Shenandoah Valley. If you have never been out there you will be surprised by all the wineries that dot the highway. We went there because we are participating in a crush club and the weather decided that the grapes had to be picked now. We arrived to find over 1,000 pounds of freshly picked grapes waiting to be destemmed. These grapes were very sweet and beautifully colored and are perfect for a 'Big Zin'. Larry the owner was very helpful through this process and explained everything to the newbie in the crowd. My other team members have either done this before or are winemakers. I guess I am ensured that the Zin that I get in 18 months will be the best it can be. Once we were done taking the Ph, Temp, and Brix, we all trouped inside for some tasting. We started off tasting from the tank (don't think that is what it is called but it looked like one) which contained grapes that had been picked the week before. Very tasty stuff. Then we moved on to barrel tasting and going through the tasting selections of the day beginning with a Sangiovese and ending with a Zin. My favorite was the 2005 Syrah of which I ended up taking two bottles home. This is a small winery that does not charge for tasting and the owners and staff are very friendly. So were all of the dogs that were hanging around guarding the grapes. I will definitely be going back soon....have to go back and do the next step in the process which is the basket press. The people that work here are also really friendly and do an amazing job with the wine pourings. In fact, we brought four of our friends here the other week and they treated us all very well. In scrolling through all of these previous reviews I am incredibly surprised by my experience at Amador Cellars. My fiancé and I were celebrating our anniversary and were spending the day in the area winery hopping. This was our 3rd stop and we brought in our picnic bag as we had originally intended to have a bite to eat after enjoying a tasting. From the moment we arrived, it felt a little uncomfortable, as if we were unwelcome. There was one other couple enjoying a tasting with a bubbly employee and my fiancé and I with another employee, so they were not busy by any means. The woman who was assisting us seemed annoyed that we were there and didn't explain any of the wines that she poured, she just went down the list. She even sighed loudly a couple of times, clearly she was not having a good day. We looked at each other and decided that we would not picnic here and just eat at the next spot. It wasn't until the 4th tasting/pour, which was the GSM Reserve, that she actually engaged in conversation. She was really quite pleasant once she opened up but at that point we only had 2 tasters left. Their tasting menu had a nice variety for just $5 per person and waived if you purchased wine. We left with 2 bottles since we did at least enjoy the wine, regardless of the company. The property does appears to be under construction with a large add on in progress. I am not a wine lover, but there is something about the Shenandoah Valley in Amador county that makes me wish I was. Our first stop was Amador winery and I give it five stars, for a laid back environment in a beautiful setting, the wine was delicious and my last wine, a Zin was what I ended up purchasing, by the way all of the wines got great awards. I love this place and here is why... The wine- by far, one of the best places in Amador. I just had a select reserve Zin I had been hanging on to and it blew me away. The nose had layers of fruit, spice, cocoa and vanilla. The taste was stunning. I got a little depressed after knowing it would be the last time I tasted this beauty, but then I sucked it up...literally and decided right then and there that I would enjoy this moment and the wine. Try the Barbera, Zin (West and Rocky Point) and Syrah. All are AMAZING! Do yourself a favor, join their wine club. The winery- The structure of winery itself is really cool. They have these thick cement walls which help keep the temperature regulated. Their winery dogs are so adorable and they keep you company inside and outside. Bring your lunch and have a picnic on the benches. Your biggest problem will be finding just one wine to have with lunch, do what I do, get yourself a willing DD and have at it. Then stock up on the wine you love because it will sell out, TRUST ME on that. The peeps- All of them are so wonderful. The people pouring are usually family members and the two winery dogs are super sweet. Their wine is so good as well, so good that we joined the wine club after our first visit. I don't post a lot of reviews because I feel that I either need to reward a business that is fantastic for me or warn the potential customer that they may want to try elsewhere. This review is for the latter... I had been told by two different winemaker friends in the Valley to try the Amador Cellars Sangiovese some time. Well, that sometime was last Wednesday afternoon when friends of the business and wine lovers came to visit us. We headed first to Amador Cellars tasting room on a beautiful day and in a fantastic mood for good wine! As we drove up, first impression was quaint and nicely understated. Walking in the door we noted that there were 2 staff behind the counter and only 3 other guests in the tasting room, great ratio! One of the staff placed wine glasses in front of each of us while letting us know that their was a $5 a head charge unless we bought the obligatory bottle. She poured a wine without telling us what is was and left never to be seen again. We waited and waited for a second pour. Finally I pardoned myself to intrude on the other staff member, who was chatting with the other 3 guests, and asked if she would please pour the second wine for us. She did but without telling us what the wine was. She then went back to her 3 waiting guests. With the room empty and the only conversation coming from the other 3 guests and the remaining staff member, it was at this time I realized that the staff member was not chit-chatting with a "guest", it was a group of their neighbors or friends. It was at this moment that I felt very unappreciated as a customer. To get our third pour I had to again interrupt the conversation next to us. The staff member came over to pour for us but never said what she was pouring and missed pouring my friend's glass. She then went back over to her conversation. At this point I was furious with my friend holding back a wry smile. Not wanting to start a yelling match with a worker who could not care less about her customer, I pulled out my wallet and put a 20 in front of her for the tasting fee as we walked out. She looked at me but never made a peep. We went to the winery across the street to re-group and have a snack. We began talking with the other patrons next to us at this winery and they laughed, stating that the same unwelcome experience had just happened to them! This winery must be rolling in the dough in order to treat customers this thoughtlessly. I have faith that this is not the demise of Amador County but only the bad apple in the barrel. By the way, the three wines that we did try were okay. Never did get that Sangio though. Summary, 4 stars for the wine, 0 for the help = 2 stars overall Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day! read more

We came to Amador Cellors based on a recommendation from a winery we actually didn't like. ha ha but lucky us this turned out to be a WIN! We got here just under an hour before closing. It was pretty busy, but we were able to get a place at the bar and get the tasting going. We enjoyed all the wine we tried. Especially the Petite Syrah. The lady providing the tasting did a SUPERB job. She never made us feel neglected even though she was the only one there. She talked with us as well as others and moved around and kept everyone's glasses full. We ended up buying a bottle in the end. And will be back in the future. You can definitely miss this spot with all the larger vineyards around but do yourself a favor and make the stop. You'll be glad you did. read more

The charm has gone. It has affected the wine, the atmosphere and the experience. It has become uptight, rigid and cold. Very nice setting. Wine is good. At some wineries you get four-ish or five-ish tastings, maybe some complimentary small bites or snacks, even with a $5 tasting fee. Don't expect anything extra here. Granted we arrived about half an hour before the stopped seating people, and while we didn't feel rushed to taste, we didn't have the fun experience of other Amador wineries and tasting rooms. This was the second winery we visited in the area, and few others measured up to its quality. The tasting room was lovely, the people (and the dogs) were friendly, and the wine was delicious (we bought four bottles!). We're drinking their 2007 Barbera now--a wonderful wine that brings back memories of that lovely part of the country. We live in the area and very frequently taste. We were referred to this winery by neighboring winery, which is cool, to try their Aglianico. We walked in and told the person behind the tasting bar (we were the only people there - Wednesday, March 14, around 4:00 PM), that we were referred by the other winery (name dropped the name of the person who referred us, who is also the GM of another very good neighboring winery). Her response was exactly "who, I don't know her, we aren't tasting, but you can buy a bottle." Of course, the tone was as you would expect. We decided to taste and the woman pouring, seemed incredibly disinterested, and kind of annoyed that we were there and, in addition, was very evasive about providing any standard information about the wines, and, didn't even tell us what she was pouring unless we asked. Also, I am not kidding, well before we were even finished with our glass, she had the next bottle in her hand, tilted and ready to pour. We went through 5 wines and were there at the very max, 10 minutes. The wines were alright, but a little fruit and in the zins, residual sugar heavy. We purchased two "courtesy" bottles each, one a red blend and the other a syrah, for $73 out the door and I wish I hadn't. In the end, the wines are a little higher priced than the competition, the quality is not as good, and the experience was the worst I have had in the region by far. My husband even liked the white wines and he is typically not a fan. What was more impressive was the staff which is all family owned and you can tell they take pride in what they do.
