I have been coming to Paul J. Winery for over two years now, and they are my favorite go to winery! Marteen, the wine maker and server, is always friendly and accommodating. Erin, who works weekends, is always smiling and professional. All the servers make you feel welcome. Coming from the Bay Area, where Chardonnay's and Pinots are abundant, in Amador County, they are hard to find, Paul J, has created both wines to rival those in Napa and Sonoma. They also have a wonderful mix of Reds and a sparkling wine as well. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable with bocce ball courts, and a putting green, along with Adirondack chairs. I've been here a few times over the past few years and it's quickly become a must visit winery for me. The property is just stunning, the outdoor space is cozy and inviting, they have bocce ball and a putting green, and the indoor bar top is gorgeous. I have thoroughly enjoyed every wine I've had here and have never had a bad experience with any of the staff. I recently went on a trip to CA where I visited several of the wineries in the Shenandoah Valley. Paul J's was my favorite of the whole trip! We sat outside since the weather was nice and were well taken care of. It was evident from the get go this was a family business and that made me love it all the more. It provided a relaxing atmosphere with great wines and staff that really cared about the wine they were pouring. We had a mix of people pouring for us, all of which were happy to tell us about each wine and even pour us a few extra sips so we could better decide which ones we wanted to ship back to SC. Our wine arrived the other day and I'm hoping it lasts until Thanksgiving as I've promised some family members I was bringing awesome wine for them to try. My favorite was the Barbara and I will definitely be placing another order over Christmas! If you're visiting the area I highly recommend this winery for the great outdoor space, friendly staff, and excellent wines! read more

4.5 stars rounded up. I have been coming here for a few years now, they are easy to access off Shenandoah Road in Amador County. Unpretentious with its friendly service, what brings me here is their chardonnay. I swear it is one of the best in the area. The combination of local (Clarksburg) and Mendocino area grapes create a well-balanced blend with a hint of malolactic fermentation due to aging in oak barrels. The tasting room is a rustic building with lots of counter space as well as plenty of outdoor seating. There is an area for picnics and plenty of tables. Whenever I have out of town visitors, I take them here for wine tasting as well as a few other favorites! read more

We were excited to visit your winery as we had heard wonderful feedback from friends. That took a turn when we approached the tasting bar - the young man seemed disinterested in our being there - even went as far as to tell us he wasn't supposed to be working that day - it was obvious he didn't want to be there nor did he want to serve us. We inquired about a bottle special he had and he rudely grabbed the sign and said not available- his arrogant manner was a big turn off - need hire people that enjoy your wine and are proud to convey it. read more

If you are trying to figure out where to go for a really nice wine tasting experience I'd recommend Paul J as one of my top three for the Shenandoah Valley area. The service was excellent with really good explanations of the different wines. I really think the variety they carry is excellent. Of course, they are known for the buttery Chardonnay....yum!! What's really cool is the Bocce Ball court, putting green and corn hole. You'll pay a tasting fee that you can apply to your purchase. After our experience in the tasting room (9/3) we had to leave a review as a group. We were all shocked by the service today. We've never felt more unwelcome and uncomfortable in your winery. Two from our group of 6 walked in first at 4:20pm ish and were greeted with, "hi, two for a tasting?" my husband let her know there were 6 of us coming in total and she said, "we close 4:30 but i guess I'll take you guys now"... My parents (2 out of the 6 in our group) are members of your winery (& many others in the area) and go often to taste, buy wine, and pick up their wine from membership. My husband and I often meet them up there. We love sitting outside. We've always had great experiences until this time. Throughout our tasting your employee was cold, uninterested (in us, your wine or whatever else was going on). She was the one with long brown hair. She didn't introduce herself. She poured our tasting as quick as she could, no explanation of what each wine was and only shared after we asked. Lacking personality for a job you got to have some personality! The owners daughter is always very nice and welcoming. She was there but not when we first walked in. Soon after we were inside she came out and welcomed two other groups of people in to taste after us. So much for 4:30 rule eh? I understand it's hard to hire right now. I experience it too, in my business. But this was a bad experience leaving us not wanting to come back as often as we do. read more

The wines were fine, not really my flavor profile but either way that's not what pushed this review into 3-star territory. What really did it for me was the lackadaisical service of one of their younger staff members, who just read straight off the menu and didn't really have any enthusiasm. It almost seemed like she was was just there collecting a paycheck. That sort of attitude just gave me a sour opinion about the winery...if the staff isn't passionate about the product then why should I be passionate about the product? I know that not all pourers are experts on their product, but at least show some enthusiasm! The other part was the pour "restricters" that they used, which lead to some mediocre pours. We basically got half the pours as other wineries in the area, but paid twice as much as most of the other wineries. Not a good first impression at all. read more

I mis judged the wine here on my first visit here maybe because I did to many tastings that day. Came here awhile back did a tasing and bought a bottle of the Syrah and took it home and opened it few months later and I really liked it. I joined their mailing list and since then I've purchase 6 bottles of the Syrah. Ordering online is pretty easy and if you email them they get right back to you. I hope to visit This place again and try more of their wines. read more

Paul J. Wines is one of the newest additions to the Amador County wine scene. They are part of the third generation wineries with a more upscale environment and more aggressive wine selection. The tasting room is located along Shenandoah Road closer to Plymouth. The tasting room is pretty awesome. It has a large and open feel with lots of exposed cedar and a sweeping view of the property including a great view of the vineyards. They have all the modern amenities including a bocce court, outdoor patio seating, and a decent parking lot. The wood smell is rather strong and may overpower some palettes, but it is still pleasant. Wine is the real reason you visit. The tasting menu is rather large with a few unique options. I love seeing wineries experiment with new options. The tasting fee is waived with purchase which is the new normal. Staff is working out the bugs with a new place, but have a great attitude and make for a nice experience. I love my old, but I also love finding new wineries in the region. Paul J. Wines is doing everything right as the newcomer, and I recommend stopping by before the crowds. read more

The relaxed atmosphere is wonderful. The greatest part is their wine pick up parties! Today they had it catered by "The County Barbecue". Awesome younger guys born and raised around here. Served tri tip and pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad and chips. Literally everyone was raving about it. The winery was short staffed but they worked their butts off and NO ONE seemed to mind because they worked as quickly as they could. Plus, we all belong here for a reason. Next party.... I have been wine tasting in Amador for years and never stopped into Paul J until today. Now usually new wineries are hit and miss. I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. Stopped in yesterday based on a recommendation. It is a small but nice location. We were very hopeful, but it all turned South as soon as we walked in. We were the only people inside the business. The one girl working was very rude, and it seemed she was disgusted having to greet up. We have been to a lot of wineries over the years, and we have never seen someone so rude. She was young and obviously didn't want to be there. She had dark hair, and she gave us her name. It was an unusual name ending in Lani. We wanted to leave immediately, but we stayed because we wanted to try the wines. Unfortunately, she poured quickly and made us feel unwelcome. We did not try a wine we liked, but we were more focused on just getting out of there. While we were there, some of their own members came in to pick up their wine. She was very rude to them too. We were astonished at her attitude. If they owner of this winery is reading this, do yourself a huge favor and fire "...Lani." She is clearly not cut out for customer service, and you are going to lose a lot of business. We will not be coming back, and we will not be recommending your winery. read more
