Recently working in the area was looking forward to a plain sandwich due to an upset stomach. Amatos is at home here on India St. They have a nice corner location with ample parking to use when dining or carrying away. I was taking away, needed some fresh air because I wasn't feeling up to staying f inside. I orders a ham Italian because a plain hand sandwich lent a different bread type, with nothing but ham and lettuce and black olives. Not the best but appetizing. Said no cheese, on salt or pepper and no oil please I assume she wrote it correctly, paid and waited them to create. Name was called and off I went o find a place to sit down by the water and rest. Sat down on a bench by myself and opens the paper and took my first bite and ended up with what seemed like double cheese! Had to take off as this would not be good for my sensitive stomach. The sandwich was just what I needed, minus the cheese. Convenience and OK pricing will have me back for sure.

Chicken fresh spinach calzone sauce on side. $14.

I ordered the chicken and fresh spinach calzone. They put garlic on the crust and it was outstanding. Enough for 3 guidos for lunch. Being from NY it was surpassed my my bar. If I lived nearby it would be my go to.

See all that glistening oily goodness in the photo? This is why you listen to the guy at the counter when he says "take extra napkins." Mmmmm. So I'm a recent transplant to Portland and learned that Amato's is an institution; then I met someone who told me a story about fighting off a seagull who tried to grab her sandwich and I thought O.K., this has got to be REALLY GOOD. (Hers was vegetarian, btw, which means she fought off a furious scavenger with a beak for the sake of cheese and the veggies. She won.) I went classic with the Amato's Original Real Italian, which has ham and cheese and the veggie mix of tomatoes, green peppers, olives, oil, and salt & pepper; also some chopped onions and pickles (if you go with "everything," which you should). It's on a soft-style bun (reminiscent of a hot dog bun) that doesn't overwhelm the fillings, which is perfect! Staff at the India Street location were super nice too: I told them this was my first Amato's and they said they were going to make it extra good (I'm sure it's always this good). Can't wait to return for the meatball parm at some point, but meanwhile, no seagull is coming between me and my Amato's.

#Portlandfoodietour Just had my first Amatos sub... FIRE WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man they really know how to make a sub. Just gained a customer for life. First of all the sub is the perfect size! The meats are quality and they season the veggies before they out them on the sub. So smart!!!!!! The bread is so fresh it's amazing. The veggies are ripe and crispy and taste unreal! They certainly give you a healthy portion of meats and veggies that's for sure! I would highly recommend you try it.

My summer spot for an Italian sandwich, chips and a Snapple raspberry ice tea. In the warmer months they have outside tables/umbrellas. They do have a public restroom. The staff are friendly and the food is good. Get extra napkins and enjoy!

Amato's was by no means a gourmet experience but sometimes that's exactly what you need! It says a lot when we travel all this way from DC and the only request we get is to bring back an Italian sub from Amato's. The sub is made with simple, fresh ingredients-- not what you'd expect from what looks like a gas station convenience store with a Subway connected. The cured meats between some tasty Italian bread that's then topped with freshly sliced green peppers, red onions, olives, and drizzled with some olive oil-- it doesn't really get better than that! The outside seating area had plenty of tables and we were lucky enough to have a nice day to all sit outside and take in the local flavor. Start here and wonder down the street for some duck fat fries-- yum!

The classic Italian cold cut with banana peppers, ugh amazing, and the bread was super fresh too! The meat stuffers were out of this world delicious, too! Definitely recommend if you want something, fresh, quick, and delicious!

I wish Amato's is in every state. I like fresh vegetables that are sliced as they make them. Even the locations in gas stations are great.

She's was very accommodating with my deconstructed requests for both Sandwiches. An A+ employee. My Market sandwich (eggplant) was just okay. The bread was for a better word "stale" I could hardly bite into it. The same was true of the turkey ceasar hoagie. However the turkey was very good. I'm going to have to think hard if I ever want to try another hoagie from Ramona's. I know the owners are both respected chefs in their own right but I'm having a tough time justifying whether I will return.

Urg. I was excited to try this place but the egg sandwich I got (the Ramona with broccoli rabe,…read morebacon, American cheese) fell short. The roll was ever so slightly stale and the broccoli rabe had chili in it (so even though I asked for chili on the side it's still in the vegetable part). I also have a total pet peeve about American cheese. In this instance, it just made the sandwich have a gluey internal texture. I often find it is gourmet places trying to be trendy that use American cheese as though they are able to rebrand it. Sharp American or not, the cheese would have been way better in my opinion had it been cheddar or Swiss or really anything. To be fair, the bacon was well-cooked and the eggs were nicely scrambled. Although the sandwich idea is original (broccoli rabe on a breakfast sandwich), I found the flavors just didn't come together. For what it's worth, service was friendly and efficient. Moreover, like a few other places on the East End, I find this place is just sort of too curated, overly self-conscious, and trying too hard to be trendy. I would take a straightforward breakfast sandwich over one that comes with a side of merch and a Brooklyn-hipster-like environment any day.

Thinner crust, decent structure, more structured than a NY, less structured than a Sicilian or a good grandma style. It's a little lighter than a Sicilian or grandma in terms of crust. "Heaviness" is pretty subjective depending on the toppings. The pizza - Soppresatta was packed with flavor, salty, spicy, little sweet from a touch of honey and a very fresh, slightly punchy sauce - keeps some acidity and tastes lively. The crust was delicious, from what I read, this is a sourdough crust. Definitely had some good character and flavor to it.. I got this heated before eating it. The vegan special - obviously I'm not vegan, but that pizza looked phenomenal. Had to try it. This one did not get heated up as it was suggested to leave it cold (logical considering it basically has a salad on top). I don't know what the vegan cheese was but it tasted like a whipped ricotta/goat cheese would. The fresh tomato, pickled peppers and red onion all played perfectly together. I'd certainly go back here. A little on the pricey side but I think it rang in around $18 on these 2 slices (yes, pictured is considered a slice of each) I was plenty satisfied.
