Recently working in the area was looking forward to a plain sandwich due to an upset stomach. Amatos is at home here on India St. They have a nice corner location with ample parking to use when dining or carrying away. I was taking away, needed some fresh air because I wasn't feeling up to staying f inside. I orders a ham Italian because a plain hand sandwich lent a different bread type, with nothing but ham and lettuce and black olives. Not the best but appetizing. Said no cheese, on salt or pepper and no oil please I assume she wrote it correctly, paid and waited them to create. Name was called and off I went o find a place to sit down by the water and rest. Sat down on a bench by myself and opens the paper and took my first bite and ended up with what seemed like double cheese! Had to take off as this would not be good for my sensitive stomach. Had to try a Portland grinder and chose Amato's to do it. It was the mixed Italian with all the veg. Very good sub and noticeably weighty. It comes on a split top bun. I don't think I was supposed to unwrap it before eating. Keeping it in the wax paper and uncovering it a bite of at a time probably would have kept it together a bit better. Quality of both product and service including management does appear different in each location. I drive to India St just because of the history of area. Not much on the menu, I do not like or encourage others to try. If you want a steak and cheese, go to a steak issue shop. Not a big fan of pasta meals I once was but not now (made to order tasted like sitting in water, way to long, at another location). Not the biggest fan of made to order sandwiches but in a pinch worthwhile. Nothing like a real Italian ( made as you like). While the sandwich was a bit mediocre and the chicken has some bone left which I bit into, the pizza and breadsticks were excellent! So I'm a recent transplant to Portland and learned that Amato's is an institution; then I met someone who told me a story about fighting off a seagull who tried to grab her sandwich and I thought O.K., this has got to be REALLY GOOD. (Hers was vegetarian, btw, which means she fought off a furious scavenger with a beak for the sake of cheese and the veggies. She won.) I went classic with the Amato's Original Real Italian, which has ham and cheese and the veggie mix of tomatoes, green peppers, olives, oil, and salt & pepper; also some chopped onions and pickles (if you go with "everything," which you should). It's on a soft-style bun (reminiscent of a hot dog bun) that doesn't overwhelm the fillings, which is perfect! Staff at the India Street location were super nice too: I told them this was my first Amato's and they said they were going to make it extra good (I'm sure it's always this good). Can't wait to return for the meatball parm at some point, but meanwhile, no seagull is coming between me and my Amato's. read more

Amato's was by no means a gourmet experience but sometimes that's exactly what you need! It says a lot when we travel all this way from DC and the only request we get is to bring back an Italian sub from Amato's. The sub is made with simple, fresh ingredients-- not what you'd expect from what looks like a gas station convenience store with a Subway connected. The cured meats between some tasty Italian bread that's then topped with freshly sliced green peppers, red onions, olives, and drizzled with some olive oil-- it doesn't really get better than that! The outside seating area had plenty of tables and we were lucky enough to have a nice day to all sit outside and take in the local flavor. A favorite of mine for over 30 years. Great Maine staples such as Ham Italians and whoopie pies. Great pasta bucket specials here and if you like beer, grab a local microbrew from the cooler. Ham Italians are served on fresh sandwich rolls with all the toppings. Amatos makes this sub as good as anyone in Maine. Only thing I would change, salads are prepackaged. After eating myself sick on expensive lobster rolls and other seafood's while visiting Maine, it was time to give my wallet a break. A very convenient place Amato's is a strange sort of place. At first it looks like a typical chain Italian type restaurant but once inside it becomes a convenience store and then transmogrifies into a deli. It's actually an amazing little place that is anything you want it to be. They do have good and inexpensive pizza, lobster rolls, pasta and subs, just like any typical chain sort of Italian restaurant has. But Amato's also has some cool prepared food like very good salads and pasta dishes and other things usually found in a good deli. And if you look around you can find all sorts of junk food, beer and drinks in the convenience store part. There is even a nice patio outside with a weird statue where you can eat or loiter around. No, it's not gourmet food by a long shot but I love stores like this. Quick, convenient and cheap. I live in CA and have some amazing delis, but no matter how expensive, no matter how decedent, nothing matches to the superior simplicity of an Amato's Italian Sandwich. they also have pretty solid pizza, nice a la carte salads, and an efficient ordering system. read more

Nice little quiet deli. Has an assortment of beverages, fresh food, and chips. Outside dining area is fairy nice too. I was referred over here to get a lobster roll from a local since most places over charge in downtown Portland. I. Love. Amato's. From their Italians, their pasta bakes, right down to their sour pickles, there isn't anything I don't love about Amato's. I have been to this location a variety of times, and they are definitely a hit or miss. One perk is that they are consistently super efficient and fast. If you go in to order, you won't be waiting for more than 10 minutes, which is convenient. However, sometimes the employees managing the cash register are not incredibly personable, or knowledgeable about the items that they are serving. It seems as though this location has a large turnover rate and I have found that the employees at the cash register are typically new and don't quite know how to ring things up, which then leads to orders being incorrect sometimes. However, the food is always hot and packaged nicely, which at the end of the day is the most important thing. Overall, I will always be a supporter of Amato's and this location happens to be right down the road from where I live, so it's convenient. Been a local for nearly 50 years, Amatos has the best Italian Sandwiches around, not subs, Italians. I have shared with friends from around the world. Have family from out of state that never leave until having one. In the past they would make sandwiches ahead of time, Sometimes the bread would get stale, etc. Every Italian appears to made to order which is amazing. I am a professional Italian sandwich eater, have had many throughout the state, the weirdest being one from a variety store in Monticello,ME, lets just say that was not an Italian. In addition to several breweries and distilleries, having another was definitely on my to-do list during this visit.
