While visiting Portland it was suggested if we wanted a reasonably priced lobster roll, this off-the-beaten-path was the place to go. Hilltop is basically a convenience store and deli. The lobster roll was great, it was one ounce smaller than most, but almost half the prices. What a deal, great food at a great price. My wide was the lobster person, I had a hoagie. The hoagie was good. Fresh ingredients made to order. So, why the four stars instead of five? Well, the staff in the deli just sat around and waited and waited and waited for someone else to show up and make our food. These guys were dressed to work in the deli, but they seemed more interested in hanging out than working. Dude who made the order called them out and they seemed very non-plussed about the whole thing. Kudos to the guy who made our food, and his young son who came in as was a nice diversion from the wait, as much as a diversion a middle school kid can be, that is. Had it not been for him, and his dad, this would have been a three-star review. read more

Shelves were mostly empty in this small neighborhood shop. You can't get prepared/cooked food until 9AM. (I think everyone in the City of Portland sleeps in... lucky them) I had a cup of coffee when they opened made by a local roaster and perused their aisles. They have most of the simple grocery items you would need. Plenty of cold drinks - milk, water, soda, energy drinks, alcoholic drinks etc. They have a big shelf of wine and a decent hard liquor offering behind the cashier booth. I snagged a bottle of Larceny Barrel Proof from a late 2023 release for a fair price. The food menu looked great, but unfortunately ordering wasn't in the cards for us. If your walking in this area of Portland and need a decent little convenience store give these guys a shot. read more

Was charged 19.50 for a bottle of wine labeled 15.99 on the shelf. Even took the obnoxious man behind the counter over to check the price label. He told me it wasn't updated in the system. How is that my problem? Worst customer service, and the place sells nothing but junk food and booze. Avoid this place if you live on the hill. Used to be a reliable, well stocked corner store. Ok I've now gotten their chicken pesto pizza twice on UberEats, first of all it arrives still hot which is amazing!! Second it's so good, so good. I mean there are a lot of good pizza places in Portland but Hilltop Superette is next level!!! The crust is perfect golden brown and not too thick or thin so the pizza flops. The pesto was so friggin good I'm getting hungry just writing this review. I can't adequately say how impressed I am with Hilltop, but you must....MUST get pizza here you won't be disappointed. The new management over the past year has really cleaned up this place. They now have better coffee, hard liquor and a extensive selection of beers and wines. Most important they seem to be hub for our eclectic community of Munjoy Hillbillies. It's always a place to come and feel like everyone is welcome. Poor, rich, young & old. This neighborhood store is the definition of convenient! It's directly across the street from the Portland Observatory and a local Fire EMT station. The staff is friendly and helpful, serving up hot pizza, sub sandwiches, and an assortment of onsite food choices. There's a good selection of groceries, wine, and beer available at reasonable prices. Outside are two large picnic style tables if you desire to dine on location. Whatever young lady answered the phone Tuesday, August 24th at 12pm was extremely RUDE. I called AFTER seeing your online menu, and asked if there was a Supperette Italian sandwhich, she replies ... with a nasty tone mind you, 'umm we have an Italian' I said again, your website says you do.. there's also people in your reviews that say you have a hilltop or supperette italian.. so I told her this and she said with ANOTHER tone that they didn't have it. I hung up because I didn't want to feed my energy and money into this type of negativity. That being said -- you've lost a customer. My mom actually enjoyed this place... Personally, I think that anyone who has said that the cashiers are rude we're probably rude customers themselves, and didn't like being put in their place. I was saving my 100th review for something special, and this place is it. This place has all sorts of food, and its good. I had a pepperoni slice, 6 buffalo wings, and 6 honey mustard wings. The pizza was legit. Nothing super fancy, but just right in my book. Plus, its $15.99 for 22" pizza (and they said they'd throw in a 10" for free). You do the math; that's a wonderful deal. Or you can buy by-the-slice ($2-$3 depending on what kind you get). The wings were also amazing. They were fried perfectly and had the right amount of sauce. The sauces are also made there in the store. Honey Mustard is what you would expect, but the buffalo is out of this world. My roommate swears there's some BBQ dry-rub in the sauce. I think it's laced with a ton of Parmesan cheese instead. Either way, the buffalo sauce is unique and definitely worth trying. The menu was pretty diverse, and the prices were beyond fair. They had pre-made food if you're in a hurry, or you can wait for grilled items to be made fresh-to-order. This place also has a fair amount of items you'd find at a grocery store (bread, chips, milk, drinks, cereal, etc.) Additionally, Hilltop Superette boasts a fantastic beer selection, including many of Maine's own craft beers. The staff was super friendly, especially the old man/owner. He gave us the rundown on all the menu items and signed us up for their Super Bowl™ sweepstakes. He's a good guy, like all the people that worked here. If there wasn't snow outside, I would've sworn that I was in the South...so much hospitality... My only complaint: I wish this place had some seating. I've been to the Hilltop Superette for breakfast sandwiches and pizza in the past and it was all very good and well made. The staff at the HS is also super friendly and customer focused. The reason I am writing this review is that right now, Hilltop Superette, through a relationship with the Frisky Whisk, is carrying HOMEMADE CHOCO-TACOS in their ice cream freezer!!!! Imagine a freshly made vanilla pizzelle type shell filled with homemade vanilla ice cream, then coated in dark chocolate. They are delicious and HUGE! They also come in additional flavors like "cookies and cream", but I can only attest to the beauty of the classic flavor. The choco-tacos are delivered every Thursday and are a hot item, so you might want to double check/call in advance to prevent crushing disappointment. These ARE worth a special trip. Make sure to score one before the summer is over! read more

So I wanted to try this place again, in the evening, and had a whole different experience! All the staff were friendly, and the food was good good good. And huge portions for the price. Hopefully the managers can give the morning crew a boost, because the evening staff were A+. I've frequented this store several times over the last couple of weeks to shop for staples while house sitting on the hill. The convenience of this store can't be beat, and I wish every Portland neighborhood had something like it. They carry a variety of staples from standard grocery items to local treats and baked goods. I haven't tried their made-to-order food items yet, but the menu looks great. The reason for the 3 stars is for the poor customer service, specifically one employee who has been manning the counter every time I've been in. The first time I thought maybe she was just having a bad day, the second time I learned it was just general unfriendliness, and the third time I just avoided eye contact completely and checked out. Never overtly rude exactly, just not at all friendly. Then yesterday the same employee snapped at another customer who asked a question and I was taken aback. Maybe this customer had been a problem before? I don't know the history, but it's bad form to do this in front of other customers. I'll likely return to this convenient spot and if/when my customer service experience improves I'll update this review. read more

when i was searching for neighborhoods to live in i looked at an over-priced apartment, and then went for lunch... and walked in here for a sandwich... they were playing talking heads on the stereo. and i ordered a sandwich, not expecting much.. and it was a terrific one!!! i walked around a bit more seeing the coffee shop and couple other places and thought to myself that this was it! so after 5-weeks of relentless apartment hunting i did end up finding one in the munjoy butt, and having already dined here was excited that there was at least one or two good spots to visit. since then, i have ventured to the superette probably 2-3 times per week at a minimum... i have had all meals here. breakfast sandwiches and coffee. lunch sandwiches hot & cold. dinners meatball subs, chicken parm subs, pizza.... yeaaahhhh, yeaaaahhhh, yeah... i have heard different music here too - all very good. lou reed. tom petty. grateful dead. deee-lite. while we are on the subject for a small place they have an outstanding beer selection. top notch stuff. and the staff have always been very friendly to me. in short, i love this place. its got everything you need to survive. its one of the only places in Portland that has been consistently excellent. $5 dollar minimum for credit cards. read more

I've never seen a place with a Cheeseburger basket that has 2 cheeseburgers in it so that to me was 5 star alone, and the burgers are solid, their slider-esque, but filling and delicious plus there is a butt load of fries so that is a serious deal. The Veggie burger doesn't come with fries but again, there was more than enough from the basket to share, and my lady says the Veggie burger was really good. Didn't love the fried pickles, they are cut length wise vs the more familiar chip style, just kind of soggy, not terrible but probably wouldn't order again. This place does an amazing amount of things in their small space and the layout is warm and cozy, there's everything you need here and they have produce. They have real food and it's GOOD. They have picnic tables, house made sausage and an ice cream stand. And, they will make you a sandwich!! People that work here are always lovely and there are never creepy convenience store people creepin about. I wish all the convenience stores were like this. Here's the latest: 1) The ham Italians are good - I like the way they slice their onions, I like the pickles, added lettuce is a bonus from my perspective. Word of warning: I subbed provolone instead of American and it jumped from 3.99 to 6.99. Maybe a one time thing or a growing pain... I asked about it and the woman couldn't really explain the price jump. Again, probably just a first couple weeks. 2) They could stand to order less of their bread and have it delivered more frequently... It's always a little stale. 3) no falafel or eggplant yet. FINALLY! A falafel sandwich worth eating in Portland! We were totally impressed with the helpful staff and delicious food when we swung by here late Thursday evening after an event. The sandwiches were awesome, prepared while we waited, and the pizza looked delicious too. I'm bummed I don't live in this neighborhood but will come back for sure next time I'm craving a good sandwich or takeout order to go. Superette is a small grocery store stuffed inside the square footage of a convenience store. They had a nice selection of pantry goods, fresh produce, beverages, proteins, and snacks. There was also a good size deli section where you could order pizzas, sandwiches, and more. Prices seemed fair. This is strictly on their service and PIZZA. We ordered an 18" pizza and the response was "wait til you see the slices." My thought, what does she mean slices, I'm getting an entire pie! Boy, was I wrong. This pie was massive and so were the slices, but I'm sure they'd glide the slicer a few more times to accommodate a customer's wishes. On top of how large, perfectly cooked, perfectly cheesed & sauced this pizza was, is the cost... $20. Yup, you read that right, only $20 for a pie as big as my dining room table. I really didn't want to like this place, I'm not entirely sure why. I loved the old Colucci's in all it's imperfect glory and any change was a bad one, I guess. Colucci's was more of your typical mom & pop, and while Hilltop Superette is not, it's just hard to argue with what they've got going. SUPER nice staff, every one of them; Great beer selection; I've only tried a couple sandwiches but both were fantastic and pretty decently priced for the quality. And now they have this great little produce section where you can find all kinds of necessities, and again really pretty cheap. I guess I thought Hilltop was just going to be out to cash in on the Hill, but as far as I'm concerned couldn't be more opposite. The moment I knew I could no longer to pretend to hate this place was last winter, in the middle of a total blizzard, they are open, everyone working is smiling, and I was able to get pre-peeled garlic cloves, ginger root, a lime, two jalapeños and an onion for like $5. Live a few buildings down and I really love hilltop! They have really good cheap breakfast sandwiches which they put out promptly at 6 which is nice if you work super early. Good coffee and lots of options, including iced year round. The eggs are never overcooked and the bacon is nice- the biscuit sandwiches are fire. The staff are all efficient and nice and the place is always clean. They carry lots of staples, produce, and great beer- it's all expensive but you pay for convenience so it's all good. And the nighttime food is good too and priced fairly- it can be a little hectic on the weekends but they always get you your food in a timely manner- you can call ahead! Also dog friendly and lots of picnic tables outside where you can sit and eat. Love the superette, it adds a lot to the neighborhood. read more

I'm writing this out of love, but geez... Don't know if this place sold again recently or something but the lack of caring is very apparent. I called and 2 of the things I ordered from the online menu were not actually being made anymore (milkshake and sausage sando) and I was informed upon arrival that the fried pickles I had ordered ran out, even though I specifically asked on the phone if they still had some and the person said yes (clearly they didn't check). The food was sub-sub-par instead of just normal sub-par, burger greasy in the bad way and unseasoned, rueben had lack of kraut, fries were soggy. Seemed like workers didn't care that they were open, pizza in the warmer was obviously hours old. You guys could literally be printing money, there's not a thing on the Hill other than you except lame hipster sit-down restaurants. Step up your game or we'll all have to look at another squalid condo block filled with trust fund scum with an artisanal pretzel shop on the ground floor selling $20 per serving trash food.
