The quality of our food and the accuracy of our orders have been consistently solid. Our Italians have always been perfect and made to order. Our pepperoni pazzo - perfect. Our spaghetti calzones perfect. I feel like online order has really made a difference with the accuracy of our orders. Because we usually place online orders, we don't interact too much with the staff other than pick up. With that said, they are always prompt to meet us at the register and are fast-friendly. Inside feels like a quick serve cafeteria. There is a hot food warming station in the middle of the pace and you basically walk around it to get to the drink coolers, on the left and sandwich/premade coolers on the right and the counter in the front. I actually like it, because it forces a natural line to the counters for order or for pick up...I always glance to see if there's anything additional I might want to pick up from the hot food grab and go. The location has plenty of parking. It can get tricky if you aren't from the area and you approach it or leave it from the wrong direction because it is a heavy traffic area - around lunch and dinner time. read more

For some reason ordering from this Amato's is so hard. It doesn't matter if it's online or by phone. And there is a woman there that seems to really struggle. I can't tell if it's the same woman who I am speaking to every time this happens, but if a woman picks up the phone my husband and I both hang up and call another Amato's. (You will save money driving a longer distance and getting what you want.) Simple orders like regular Italian with tomato on the side become Ham and cheese on bread with tomato on the side. This is definitely the best Amato's location, in my opinion. If you're a local Mainer, you KNOW that Amato's Italians are a staple that need to be in your life frequently. I go for the veggie Italian: American cheese, peppers, olives, pickles, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and oil. It is like heaven in a sandwich. Oily, caloric goodness. Don't miss out on their cheese pazzo, too. Their homemade marina sauce is also DELISH. Their dinner plates are good - the eggplant parm is enough food to kill a man, which is exactly how I like my dinner plates to be. Or, if you're a meateater, go for the Double Real Italian - a ham Italian with piles and piles of veggies and meats. Prices are super reasonable. Extra toppings on sandwiches are worth the extra few cents. The wait here can be pretty crazy. Sometimes there are lines out the door, which can be hectic. The staff also can be miserable and cranky, but that's why you call ahead, pull in, pick it up, go home, and smother your face in oil and veggies. Skip the St. John's location, as this place is grungier than a dive bar and WILL mess up your order. Maybe the grubbiest place in Portland. Consistency is key for me to have a long term relationship with a restaurant, unfortunately I'd have to say 75% of the time they get it right. Let me just say that when they do get it right...they get it right! Fresh tomatoes, fresh bread, tightly wrapped and delicious. If only they offered delivery not through a third party app I'd order far more often. The store is always clean with lots of options for sides from chips to salads and lots of drink and dessert options. I got a veggie wrap and was super glad I pulled up a spot at their outside picnic table since the veggies were juicy and I would have made an ultimate slob out of myself if I drove and ate. The veggie pizza without cheese was loaded with lots of black olives, mushrooms and peppers. Love that it was loaded. The crust had a crunchy outside coating but the inside was doughy. This is my favorite but Mr. G likes a thinner crunchier crust. Where do I begin with how terrible this experience was? I would give zero stars if possible but Yelp doesn't allow that. I am in town to visit my husband's family and we have been to Amato's before so this isn't something new. I called in and ordered a large pizza, half cheese and half pepperoni, then asked if they could do a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. I did not have access to their menu and didn't know if this was possible. The kid who answered the phone asked me to hold, and about 30 seconds later said that was fine. He repeated the order to me so there was no confusion in what we wanted. He told me the food would take 25 minutes and honestly, he was kind of rude and I was turned off by his attitude but decided to put that aside considering it was take out...it's not like we were giving him a tip. I showed up nearly 30 minutes later to a busy restaurant where the staff were loudly arguing with one another. Apparently a large order (14 sandwiches) had come in by phone and one of the women working was upset that not enough time was told to the customer to pick up. Either way, myself and the other customers heard the whole exchange between employees and it was extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable...talk about tension! At this point I was waited on, after someone finally realized I was standing under the giant "phone/online order pick up" sign. They seemed annoyed I was waiting there but where else would you go when picking up an order you called in??? I gave the associate my name and he rang up my order and I paid. He then went and collected my pizza and handed it to me, then started to walk away, at which point I asked "where is the chicken Caesar salad?" He pointed at the refrigerated section and said "there are fresh salads that were just made there." I went and looked and not one salad was what I asked (and paid for). And no one cared because they were just cranking out the orders and not caring about the quality. I went back and told him that's not what I ordered and he again said, "the salads are there." I explained to him that I ordered a specific salad and was told it could be done and again he shrugged and said these are the salads. Customer service is nearly nonexistent - your food will be ready, waiting on a back counter and never occurs to the staff, that maybe it belongs to one of the many people waiting and losing their patience. Unfortunately, I am done with this Amato's location. About a year ago, I started working near this location and I wanted to make this a regular lunch spot. I love steak and cheese sandwiches, and that is what I usually order here. I always just order steak and cheese on the sandwich, always specifying no onions, peppers, and mushrooms. After receiving a couple of sandwiches that had bread so wet and soggy I had to pick almost half of it off, I stopped coming here for a couple of months. Today, I decided to give them another chance and get a steak and cheese (total craving). I called ahead and ordered over the phone, making sure I specifically told them no mushrooms, no peppers, no onions. I picked up the sandwich on my lunch break and brought it back to my work. The bread on the sandwich was soaking wet and falling apart. It was also smothered in mushrooms, peppers, and onions. I couldn't eat any of it, I threw it right in the trash. $12 right in the trash (for the nasty sandwich and 16 oz. soda from the freezer). If I wasn't at work I would have drove back to the store and complained to get my money back. However, I then would have had to deal with the high school aged employees who are usually fighting and swearing at each other every time I go in there. Amato's is a Maine chain that can be found all over the state, even sometimes as a part of gas station food courts. Amato's grew it's popularity all over the Pine Tree state by making the "original" Maine italian sandwich. Even though this sandwich has been torn apart for having no connection to what is considered an italian sandwich anywhere else in the world, I defend this humble sandwich as being pretty damn tasty as a stand alone specialty. The main reason I frequent Amato's though, is that I really like their tomato sauce, meatballs and a stuffed-dough-pinwheel item they make called "little stuffers". Little stuffers come stuffed with either pepperoni or broccoli and spinach and are served with a big container of sauce. They almost perfectly hit the spot on those days when you skipped breakfast and run out to pick up lunch ravenously hungry. They are REALLY good. Most Amato's are take out only, some have seating. This particular one in Westbrook has no seating except for a curious picnic table squished between the outside of the store and the parking lot. The food quality at this Amato's is consistent and as expected. My only complaint is that there seems to be a lot of staff turnover here which can make for a wildly diverse customer experience. Some days my order is taken from people who are courteous and on point and at other times I have encountered surly, stressed people behind the counter who get my order wrong. Sadly, last Saturday, I ordered 6 meatballs and while I waited 20 minutes for the order, there was clearly an argument going on in the back between two employees which made for an uncomfortable air in the store. This place is okay. Most stuff is great for kids but they charge way too much for a simple bowl of pasta. I only go here when my kids are hungry and there is nothing else around. I've been to a few Amato's over the years and have ordered everything from the so-called "real Italian" to salads and pastas. The salads, pizza, and pasta are better than the signature sandwich. I usually go in for a sandwich but end up disappointed. Whoever told these sandwich artists to slice veggies over the top of bread and just let it drop down, slather it with oil, salt & pepper needs to see how these sandwiches are to eat when your unwrap them. They do have a following and there is always a crowd but there is much better available. I'll go to Subway over Amato's for a sandwich. My latest sandwich was a tuna sub last week. I asked for lettuce, tomatoes, and provolone. I got the top slice and bottom slice of the tomato. At home I throw those out. read more

Normally I'm a big fan of Amatos, but the price I was charged did not match the price of what I actually bought and I was overcharged, even after complaining no one did anything to assist me and gave me an attitude. I used to live seconds away from the Washington Ave location when I was a child and practically ate there once a day. With that being said I've moved. So the Westbrook location is the closest. Two words for you: NOT IMPRESSED. The staff is absolutely ridiculous. So rude, even to the nicest people. Leave your nasty attitudes at home. This location has messed up my order every. Single. Time. Pazzo bread with extra cheese and extra sauce came with almost no cheese and no sauce at all even though I was up charged almost 3 dollars. I didn't realize this error until I made it all the way home. I called the store and explained to them that I had no cheese and no sauce whatsoever on my pazzo bread. The manager I spoke to claimed that since I paid with a debit card she would refund me. Never happened and never got my refund. I would highly advise to check every single item you order no matter what it is BEFORE you leave the cash register! Same thing with my Italian sandwiches. if I request and PAY for extra pickles there have been No pickles at all. It's almost as if the jerks who work there are spiteful and go out of their way to remove the items that you want and pay extra for. And a few days ago was the icing on the cake. I got out of work at 10 pm and wanted a pazzo bread. My mind was telling me no but my body was telling me yes. Reluctantly I tried placing my order.
