    Italian Cold Cut Sandwich
    Eric O.

Crispy, crunchy and juicy! Just ordered the Italian Sub +Capicola +Genoa salami with romaine. Bread is fresh tasting and a great base for this sandwich! First time I've ever tried anything from here plus smooth delivery via DoorDash.

The sandwiches seem skimpy compared to the past years. Prices are at my tipping point at $6.55 per sandwich. But they are still tasty. I don't get them much anymore, because there are so many other food places. Parking is good.

Waited 30 mins in this place and watched them give my order to another customer. The employees are completely disorganized and sloppy. Listened to one of them complain about their co workers the entire time I was waiting . Avoid this place.

OBSESSED with the mushroom calzone. Maybe even had it 2 days in a row? There is so many good options, but have found myself currently obsessed with this tasty meal.

If you've never had an Italian sandwich, Maine Style, you've got to start with an Amato's Italian sandwich. They are the originators! These are not the same thing as what you'll get when you order in other New England states. If you fall in love and don't live locally, you can get the sandwich or all the ingredients shipped across the USA! In addition to the famous sandwich, Amato's also offers many delicious pizzas, calzones, grinders, salads, desserts, and more. I'd suggest calling ahead. These types of food take a bit to prepare and cook. If you are in a rush and haven't pre-ordered, there is a counter in the center of the store that's typically stocked with hot and ready pazzo bread (cheesy breadsticks) and pizza. There's also a refrigerated section (see pic) of salads, sandwiches, desserts and fruit cups. Be sure to check out the Amato's brand foods along the counters, like sauce, the special sour pickles used on the sandwiches, and more! They have their own parking lot so it's easily accessible. There is no indoor seating, but if it's a nice day there are picnic tables outside.

The Veggie Italian: a Mainer's dream

This is definitely the best Amato's location, in my opinion. If you're a local Mainer, you KNOW that Amato's Italians are a staple that need to be in your life frequently. I go for the veggie Italian: American cheese, peppers, olives, pickles, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and oil. It is like heaven in a sandwich. Oily, caloric goodness. Don't miss out on their cheese pazzo, too. Their homemade marina sauce is also DELISH. Their dinner plates are good - the eggplant parm is enough food to kill a man, which is exactly how I like my dinner plates to be. Or, if you're a meateater, go for the Double Real Italian - a ham Italian with piles and piles of veggies and meats. Prices are super reasonable. Extra toppings on sandwiches are worth the extra few cents. The wait here can be pretty crazy. Sometimes there are lines out the door, which can be hectic. The staff also can be miserable and cranky, but that's why you call ahead, pull in, pick it up, go home, and smother your face in oil and veggies. Skip the St. John's location, as this place is grungier than a dive bar and WILL mess up your order. Maybe the grubbiest place in Portland. Venture out on Brighton Ave for the best dang sandwich in Maine. You will BE PLEASED. (I hope.)

    Hair on the pazzo bread.

If I could leave 0 stars I would. I ordered pazzo bread and a small cheese and this is the second time I have picked it up and there has been hair in my food absolutely disgusting.

Consistency is key for me to have a long term relationship with a restaurant, unfortunately I'd have to say 75% of the time they get it right. Let me just say that when they do get it right...they get it right! Fresh tomatoes, fresh bread, tightly wrapped and delicious. If only they offered delivery not through a third party app I'd order far more often. The store is always clean with lots of options for sides from chips to salads and lots of drink and dessert options. For my main entree I usually get a veggie sub however they have delicious eggplant, veggie roll ups and the Pazzo Bread is a fam fave. Now if only they would stop putting oil on my sandwich when I request it on the side.

We ordered a pasta dish and they forgot the chicken and the broccoli in it and put in olives in a calzone that didn't say it had olives

I just had the worst pizza I have ever had in my lifetime. I have to remember that and not go back because it used to be good.

First, some expectation setting- You can think of it as a first cousin to a grandma style or second cousin to a Sicilian. Thinner crust, decent structure, more structured than a NY, less structured than a Sicilian or a good grandma style. It's a little lighter than a Sicilian or grandma in terms of crust. "Heaviness" is pretty subjective depending on the toppings. The pizza - Soppresatta was packed with flavor, salty, spicy, little sweet from a touch of honey and a very fresh, slightly punchy sauce - keeps some acidity and tastes lively. The crust was delicious, from what I read, this is a sourdough crust. Definitely had some good character and flavor to it.. I got this heated before eating it. The vegan special - obviously I'm not vegan, but that pizza looked phenomenal. Had to try it. This one did not get heated up as it was suggested to leave it cold (logical considering it basically has a salad on top). I don't know what the vegan cheese was but it tasted like a whipped ricotta/goat cheese would. The fresh tomato, pickled peppers and red onion all played perfectly together. I'd certainly go back here. A little on the pricey side but I think it rang in around $18 on these 2 slices (yes, pictured is considered a slice of each) I was plenty satisfied.

I honestly didn't think I'd have a chance to get back to this place, but my sister was sneaky and sent her GPS so that we were going right by it before I headed off to the airport to head home and I'm so glad she did This place is fantastic. The pizza is great. I wish I had room in my suitcase to bring back other items, but it was fantastic to be able to stop by and really looking forward to going there the next time I'm back in Maine.
