Davis Cemetery District is a cemetery burial site in Davis, CA. that has been in existence for…read moreclose to 150 years. Yolo county residents receive a reduced cost for a burial plot with proof of residence and/or property taxation, those outside of the district can still utilize the services but with additional cost. Davis is now known as a college town but its historical agricultural roots run deep. This cemetery is located on what was formerly the outskirts of town surrounded by farms. There are a few fields left that haven't succumbed to the developers' bulldozers, but while the now residential neighborhood is part of bustling Davis, behind the cemetery gates lies a peaceful resting place for generations. The lush plantings, heritage trees, and grassy knolls have status as an arboretum; people can bike and walk through the grounds. When my mom passed this summer, through a circuitous set of circumstances we discovered this cemetery. It was the place that resonated as the closest to a peaceful Midwestern cemetery and honored my mom's roots. Judy was very helpful in arranging the grounds tour and site selection this summer. Available by phone, email, and in person consultation, she has an excellent manner for this difficult work with an air of earned competence and attention to detail. She helped make arrangements for the graveside burial service which we had in addition to a chapel service off-site at the funeral home. Pricing was clear and fair. There are events throughout the year including an on site art gallery, Dia de Los Muertos, and the option to have a wreath or solar lantern placed graveside at Christmas/holiday season. The historic nature of the cemetery, peaceful environment, and beautiful grounds make for a valued community resource that is available during the difficult process of death and funeral planning.

I am giving it 5 stars however for some of the really old, beatifully crafted, angel statues that hover over some of the headstones. I remember a particular semi rainy, drizzly night where I took my 4x5 camera, my housemate's cigarette lighter powered spotlight and took some great 15 minute bulb exposure photographs of these angels. As I was in the middle of this the police showed up probably thinking we were pillaging the graves or something. So after briefly trying to explain my photography project we tipped them off to the group of teenagers getting wasted about 300 feet away. Sorry guys, I had to get the PO-PO off my back.

Came here for the haunted house event about a week ago and I'm not sure if I would come back again…read more Tickets were $35 each (purchased online) and you have to park and walk about 10-15 minutes to the castle or you can take the little van that drives you there which also takes the same amount of time. We took the van to the castle but they don't drop you off directly in front of the castle so you still have to walk down through security and then to the castle. Porte potty's are available right before security and once you walk up the hill to wait in line to enter the castle. There were a couple food trucks when we went, we were expecting a few based on what was said online but not sure if it depends on the time. We waited over an hour in line to enter the haunted house and if you do really believe in ghosts this place is pretty haunted. The event itself wasn't scary, the actors aren't able to touch you but there's obviously loud screaming and they may be a bit too close for comfort to get a reaction out of you. You do have to climb up and down quite a few stairs and then there's a second part lead outside and back in the castle (barely any lighting and it's a dirt road so you have to carefully walk). Many strobing lights as well so do avoid if you are triggered by that. The energy throughout the castle was not pleasant or welcoming, I was very excited for it to be over as the haunted house itself was not very good and I was mostly tired from all the walking. There's a merch truck outside at the end of the castle as well. We also decided to walk back instead of waiting for the shuttle but there absolutely no lighting and many ditches with uneven flooring so you have to be very careful. Overall experience was not my favorite and I wouldn't come back again.

You just can't beat a haunted house that takes place inside an actual haunted prison. The vibe alone gives you goosebumps before you even step inside. Add in the scare actors (who I'm convinced are local kids living their best creepy dreams), the friendly staff, and the affordable merch, and you've got the full package. This year's haunt felt longer with even more scares tucked around the corners--right up my alley! Preston keeps stepping it up, and I'm here for it. Until next year, Castle... we'll be back.

Worth noting: you are on long train with 3-4 different experiences and it seems you get different things depending on what you paid for. The my may have a tea, beer train, wine train, etc. We were in the back of the train and got the slowest service and stuck in a car with no AC. Ended up on the open air car and it was nicer. you might be better off paying for the base price; buy a drink or two and call it a day. Don't expect gourmet food here; bring a picnic and eat outside before/after your trip.

Boba Tea train: There were a number of issues with this…read moreexcursion. First off, most of the tea samples came with little to no ice and were somewhat warm. This made some of the undrinkable. Others were somewhat warm cloyingly sweet as to be unpleasant. Overall, though both of us are fans of boba tea- we would suggest a different vendor or more training for the staff preparing the samples. Roughly half of the flavors were not good at all. Additionally, they listed "boozy" flavors on the menu but never said anything about how to get those or whether they were included. Second problem- we preordered dumplings as did apparently a LOT of people. There were no dumplings on the train, only rice bowls. Furthermore- the waitress didn't know what we were talking about when we mentioned having preordered food. At least half of the tables in our car had preordered dumplings and were very disappointed. There was no information on how to obtain a refund if we didn't want the substitute of a rice bowl. About halfway through our trip, the train lost power which included lights, air conditioning, and the ability to flush toilets. Power stayed off with no explanation for more than 15 minutes, causing the car to become very warm and stuffy. Overall, this excursion suffered from lack of communication, lack of staff training, lack of preparation on the part of the organizers. Given the cost, I would not recommend this.

We booked this as a tour for around 9 people on Friday the 13th earlier this year, and…read moreunfortunately did not have a great experience, however I can see how this would be a great experience if the circumstances were different -- so 2 stars for potential. The directions were not clear as to where we were supposed to arrive. There was no address to meet at. After going back and forth with customer service, they eventually gave a landmark, which did not exist in the uber and Lyft apps and was questionable on Google Maps. Everyone in their uber got dropped off to different places. The directions also said to go to "the yellow building" -- but when we arrived, there were several yellow buildings. The tour guide also was not carrying a lantern, which was part of the directions given (look for the person carrying a lantern.) When we finally found her, we asked the tour guide where her lantern was, she said she didn't want to carry it around all night. We also believe the tour guide was late. We were in the area looking for her for about 15 minutes and we passed by the same spot she ended up being at several times and did not see anyone. Finally they called and we went back to the spot and she was there. This was around 5 minutes past the start time. Then she told us we only have until 7:30. So we are ending on time but she didn't start on time? The tour guide took us around to several bars, but the first one she admitted that it was not even haunted, or that she was not sure if the bar was haunted or not as she was not familiar with the bar. So I'm confused why we went there? There was also no indication that this was only going to be an hour and a half. It was fun bar hopping with our friends in some spooky places, but considering I paid almost three hundred dollars for the group I expected a higher quality experience.
