Flew up to Houghton from Florida for a weekend of Michigan Tech Hockey. No trip to Houghton is complete without a visit to the Ambassador! Tried to go on a Friday night but we were just a little too late to get seated as we had a large group with family and friends. On Saturday we ordered takeout pizza and went to family's. The pizzas were ready for pickup just as we walked in. The drive was a killer having to smell those pizzas and anticipating their taste. Finally, we arrived and could grab a square of pure delight. Great as always but just one problem, we should have gotten a fourth pizza! Those Uppers sure can eat. read more

I have coming up and going to Ambassadors since the 70's. While the cheese and sausage pizza never disappoints the restaurant needs to close for a week and do a deep dive cleaning. The back room looking over Portage Lake is dusty and you can barely see out the window it's so bad and the seals are coming off. The carpeting needs to go as well as it never looks as clean. Also, a fresh coat of paint would help. read more

We stopped in for lunch to this Authentic old world pub. The temperature was perfect on a freezing blizzard day ...it was toasty but not too hot. It smelled great like pizza and beer but nothing funky (you know what I'm taking about when you go to An old pub ) The service it was fantastic !! Can't go wrong here. Few feels are better than when you find THE place that encapsulates good times in that town. And when it comes to Houghton, that place is Ambassador. Great ambience, great eats and drinks, and a great staff bringing heavy helpings of Houghton charm every time they stop by your table. The pizzas are legendary, but you can choose sandwiches, pasta, or other mains if pizza's not your jam. Heck, I was in heaven with their spaghetti and meatballs. The pasta was fresh and cooked al dente, and the sauce was tangy and meaty. And that garlic bread--dannnnng! Ask for extra so you can soak up all the sauce. Full bar complete with local draft brews. I had a great dinner here during travels for a work chip. The lobster pizza was phenomenal. I am not sure why I liked it so much but I did and I would recommend this to anyone going. The drinks were great. I had an eagle rare old fashioned and a pina colada. Both were good. The pasta dish was good as well. Super reasonable pricing. You need to get a fish bowl to wash it down at least once. Great atmosphere, good service and full of nostalgia and history. You can also pre-order unbaked deep frozen pizza to make at home. I've been looking forward to coming back to Houghton for two years, and one of the things I was most excited about was having my favorite pizza in the world again. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. We ordered a large sausage, onion, and mushroom with double cheese--our go-to for years when we lived here. But this time, it was barely recognizable. There was hardly any sausage (and it didn't even taste like the same kind), the onions were so overcooked they disappeared, and the mushrooms were few and far between. Worst of all, the pizza was extremely greasy, with puddles of oil on top of the cheese. I had hoped it was just an off night, but after talking with several local friends, I heard the same thing again and again: the quality has gone downhill. Some even mentioned that the tostada pizza--once a local favorite--has also been ruined. It's really sad to see such a longtime Houghton institution, one I've been coming to since I was a teenager, decline like this. I turn 70 this month and had planned to celebrate with dinner here like I did on my last visit. But after this experience, I'll be celebrating somewhere else. Meh. Happened to be in Houghton and got hungry so I popped in to try this place. Sign at the door says wait to be seated so I waited... and waited... and waited. Bartender finally called the hostess over. Ordered a Coke a pepperoni pizza with mushrooms. The pizza is a thin crust which I prefer. But it was hard to taste anything other than the char on the pizza. It wasn't even a lot of char, but it's all I could taste over the sauce & pepperoni. The crust was really crunchy. I was almost done with my meal and had started looking for the waitress before she finally showed up with my coke. Then she never checked again. I waited a LONG time to even ask for the bill. First time in Houghton, walking downtown and happened upon The Ambassador. Very much old bar/tavern feel, kookie murals that I'm sure are original. It's a seat yourself kinda place. Service was ok, nothing special. Our server wasn't too informative on what the speciality of the house was, dare I say maybe even slightly hesitant on recommending. It was around lunch so I decided on the most popular sandwich which happened to be the Yorkshire beef. Hmmm it was good. The bread seemed fresh, the beef had a nice flavor. After reading other reviews looks like maybe we missed out on the pizza. In the sandwich category it's an ok to good. My friends also ordered sandwiches and they said they were ok. I would absolutely love to give this place 5 stars, but here's what happened. We came in, noticed a sign that said seat yourself, we found a table, but decided to wait for a booth. A guy got up, I stole his booth before the table was bussed. My fiancé and I then proceeded to wait well over 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us; don't believe me? I literally started my stop watch. It was 20 minutes after that, that we were acknowledged. Meanwhile, a party of 14 had come in, somewhere around the 10 minute mark on my watch, and ordered drinks and food. At that point, I had accepted we would be in it for the long hall. So we started with the games. At first, we piled everything up from the last gentleman on the edge of the table, then, slowly started transferring it to the table across from us wondering, who would be waited on first, the empty table, or us. Honestly, I think most the waitresses seemed preoccupied with chatting. Finally someone came over and asked if we had been helped, we said no. She said they had been wondering.. but why not come over and ask sooner? After we were acknowledged, the waitress was super nice, and everything else was fairly quick given how many people were there. Just a bummer that we were literally invisible for 20-30 minutes while they bussed, served, and waited on the tables on literally either side of us. The waitress did apologize, but, I mean...when we arrived there was maybe 20 people there, and only the booths and bar had people in it, so I'm not sure how that happens, but, I guess it does.
