Loved the decor in this old beer hall. And there some really good things from our meal. First and foremost... the bread they use for their sandwiches is top notch. Very good! So was the Meatball Appetizer. The rest... pretty average unfortunately. My Ruben was only okay and the garlic bread was also very average. Continuing our eight day stay in Houghton in our motorhome. While at the Keweenaw Brewing Company (KBC) we always strike up conversations with some locals. Ambassador has been recommended several times. We decided to try it and were craving pizza. We ordered the 12" Greek pizza (medium). I asked our server, Katelyn, if tomato sauce could be added to the pizza. Since it is a specialty pizza, Katelyn said it could not be added, but...she could bring a cup of the sauce along with the pizza. Worked out great! BTW, Katelyn was a great server and very pleasant. Oh, we were able to add pepperoni to half of the pizza. The additional cost of the pepperoni and the sauce was shockingly reasonable. The pepperoni was $1.00 and cup of sauce was $1.99. The pizza came right out of the oven and was delicious. We ordered a half carafe of the Apothic wine, which is a house wine. If you enjoy a decent wine, I suggest spending the extra 7 bucks and upgrading the wine...this is not a complaint, we like good wine. Ambassador has an old-school vibe and is very comfortable. The hostess warned us that ordering would take at least 30 minutes. They had a lot of to-go orders! The only complaint I have is that the toppings on the pizza were light. Flew up to Houghton from Florida for a weekend of Michigan Tech Hockey. No trip to Houghton is complete without a visit to the Ambassador! Tried to go on a Friday night but we were just a little too late to get seated as we had a large group with family and friends. On Saturday we ordered takeout pizza and went to family's. The pizzas were ready for pickup just as we walked in. The drive was a killer having to smell those pizzas and anticipating their taste. Finally, we arrived and could grab a square of pure delight. Oh Ambo...you are usually right on the money. I have to say today was a rough experience. We got there at 4 PM on a Tuesday. It took about 7-8 minutes to get seated, at least 5 more minutes to get water once we were seated. The food, 1 pizza and 1 meatball sandwich took 40 minutes to come out. While everything was as tasty we had too much time to observe what was going on. The dirty dishes were PILED on the bar and there were fruit fly's everywhere. We counted three people behind the bar that were actually working and 3 others who were just leaning, there were three servers who were hustling and three more who were just leaning. Due to the fruit fly situation we ended up boxing up our food and bringing it home. It looked like there was a lot of dead weight on staff. read more

The back room looking over Portage Lake is dusty and you can barely see out the window it's so bad and the seals are coming off. The carpeting needs to go as well as it never looks as clean. You need to get a fish bowl to wash it down at least once. Great atmosphere, good service and full of nostalgia and history. You can also pre-order unbaked deep frozen pizza to make at home. But it was hard to taste anything other than the char on the pizza. It wasn't even a lot of char, but it's all I could taste over the sauce & pepperoni. The crust was really crunchy. I was almost done with my meal and had started looking for the waitress before she finally showed up with my coke. Then she never checked again. I waited a LONG time to even ask for the bill.
