We've been going to Amber Leaf and seeing Dr. Jason for over three years. My fiancée and her family have been taking their pets there for much longer. We recently moved away from the area, but we continue to take our dog to Amber Leaf because everyone there--from the front desk staff to the vets and vet techs--are amazing. Our German Shepherd mix Brimley was diagnosed with epilepsy about a year before we had to put her down. Throughout her treatment, Dr. Jason always thoroughly answered our questions and helped us make informed decisions about our dog's care and quality of life. He coordinated with specialists and often offered advice over the phone without requiring us to come in for an office visit. When we had to take our girl in for a cluster of uncontrollable seizures, they let us stay in an exam room for pretty much an entire day while we comforted our anxious dog. They laid blankets out, dimmed the lights, and played calming music. The front desk staff went above and beyond staying by our dog's side when we had to leave for a short break. We honestly can't thank them enough. Everyone collectively helped make our dog's last hours peaceful and pain free. Amber Leaf has the most compassionate people and the first thing we did when we got our new puppy was schedule an exam with Dr. Jason. We hope we never have to find care anywhere else. read more

After only having horrendous vet experiences in the past, this one was heavenly. They got my sweet doggie in right away and were so kind and relaxed and efficient. A common procedure that he does all the time I was told. I went in at 4 PM to pick him up I paid for my bill and they went into their back room to get myDog - came back & told me he was DEAD AFTER I PAID THE BILL!!! I waited a week to get a 6 sentence email responsee from Sue the office manager (sue please post a email with a earlier response date if you have one!) Telling me that they were not going to refund any of the procedures that were done that day that it was most likely they Likely the cancer that killed my dog! Do not get your fur babies cremated here! Last Saturday I had to put my Coco down because of illness. I went to Amber Leaf. The process was smooth and the staff was very comforting. I paid for a VIP package which included seperate individual cremation. I also paid to have a clay mold of her paw. I just went to pick up her cremains. There was no mold. I am furious. A lady came out and said she would try to call the cremation people to see if it could still be done. Are you effing kidding me? She's sitting in front of me in an urn! I am disappointed beyond belief. This isn't something that they can "fix." I got an apology and a $35 refund. Meanwhile my heart is aching. You fur baby owners know what I mean. read more

I brought my puppy here because it was recommended by a vet that I previously worked with. Yesterday they were overbooked and my vet asked if they can take our puppy in she was dehydrated. Dr Laura took her in, they didn't do any of the diagnostics they promised and left my little coco to die. I took my puppy in around 8:15 am. I kept on following up they didn't have any kits to confirm my puppy had Provo right there and then they didn't take any blood work or X-rays by 4:00 PM I called they they told me my puppy passed away: I feel they didn't focus on helping her. I would of taken her somewhere else if they didn't have the time or necessary equipment to help my puppy. I do not recommend this place especially Dr Laura she gave us that cold shoulder feeling and has no care and compassion. read more

My sweet 6 year old, eight pound, happy and loving shih tzu died there unnecessarily. I dropped him off for his first dental cleaning (at their behest) by Dr. Leopold. A few hours later a tech left me a phone message telling me that his labs were off and they needed to know if I wanted them to go forward with the cleaning or reschedule. I heard that message after a work meeting, about 45 minutes after they left it, and so I called them back right away to tell them that I did NOT want them to go through with the cleaning, I wanted to find out why his labs were off first. Unfortunately, the tech told me that Dr. Leopold had decided that she could not wait for my call and he had just been sedated and was heading in. About an hour and a half later Dr. Leopold called me to tell me that he had died during the procedure. NO APOLOGY, no "I am so sorry but he died." Just matter-of-fact. My last memory of him alive was him being forcefully pulled by the collar by the front desk person. The guilt that I have for not asking her to pick him up instead (he was only about 8 pounds), and for taking him there in the first place. Me and my kids went back hours later to hold him one last time and say goodbye. We saw that they had clearly left his endotracheal tube in for too long after he died because his mouth was stiff into the position of it, AND they had not bothered to close his eyes upon calling his death. I tried to give this story privately to the practice owner Dr. Rohrback so he could address it privately and without harm to the practice, but when I asked for his direct email address through their website, I did not hear back. The only person that I can give 5 stars to through that experience was front desk gal, Kelsey. She clearly understood our anguish and responded to us accordingly. That meant a lot. Last month we brought our beautiful, seemingly healthy golden doodle for a complete check up at Amber leaf Winfield, including blood work. Everything looked fine. A few weeks later, he developed a swollen lymph node gland on his neck so we returned him for an ultrasound. While he was there, Dr. Jason, asked if he could do an aspiration of some fluid in that lymph note to test it, and we gave him permission for this. When we went to pick him up 45 minutes after this procedure, we paid the complete bill for the day -first ...and then Dr. Jason came up to us and said your dog is dead!!! He has no explanation for this- We are outraged! Our dog was running around the yard before we dropped him off -eating-playing With our children. We filed a complaint to the BBB and Dr. Jason didn't even bother to reply to them with any kind of an explanation !! when our family has emailed this facility asking for more of an explanation and a refund of our money all they say is sorry for your loss --stop harassing us. We don't know what steps we're going to do now as we cannot afford an attorney -we miss our precious Jackson. The children are still crying and crying. This absolutely breaks our hearts and to see a facility like Amber leaf animal Hospital in Winfield Illinois that has no empathy for us -and will not even refund the bill or have any sympathy for us at all or explanation is outrageous. Please please please never bring your dog or cat or animal to this place. They obviously are not professional.! I am not sure what happened exactly ... Dr. Leopold helped us with our Toby who developed an acute case of pancreatitis. It was very sudden and completely took us by surprise. Dr. Leopold walked us through our options that helped us make the decision to take him home overnight as he had not improved over the course of the day. He spent most of the day under their car on an IV. He passed in our arms and had not Dr. Leopold warned us of this possibility, we would have never had the chance to spend his final moments with us. I went to Amber Leaf for a second opinion, after receiving a very harsh and barely explained diagnosis of my dog's condition from another veterinarian in the area. Dr. Jason and everyone I spoke with at Amberleaf were incredibly nice to both me and my dog, very compassionate, and completely willing to take the time to explain everything. I feel that I can make a good decision regarding my dog's health as a result of my visit today. It is never easy to make decisions regarding senior pets but Dr. Jason did his best to help, by doing a very complete physical exam, and then provided all the information that I needed in a very reassuring manner. The exam price was fair and I was not pushed to do procedures that were not necessary. All together a very positive experience during a very stressful time. read more

I have been very happy with the care that my dogs and I have received from all of the staff here. I recently had to say goodbye to my almost 15 year old dog and this was the smoothest process I have ever experienced, as sad as the occasion was. My dog was not traumatized at all and that made it less difficult for me. Recently I adopted a new dog and she developed some issues that required vet care. I had a physical challenge as I was preparing to leave for the appointment and they were SO caring and understanding about my being late. My dog had to have a large cyst removed from his tail and it has been the most stressful time. The only time we felt confident was here. We've been going to Animal Leaf for years with our cats and dogs. All of the doctors and staff are amazing to work with.

I really wanted this Animal Hospital to be my new veterinarian for my 2 cats because it is only 2 miles from my home, but the bottom line is that I took my cat in for an eye infection, went back for a 2nd antibiotic, went back for a 3rd treatment, and they still have the eye infection. When i met the vet (there are several), i thought he was so kind and knowledgeable. However, he said several times that as long as the eye infection hasn't yet turned into a respiratory infection, it's not serious. Imo the purpose of immediate treatment is to prevent the infection from blinding my cats. Clearly the doctor did not take their illness seriously and i am definitely going to a different Animal Hospital next paycheck. I need my cats to be cured. read more

OMG! I used to bring my pets here and at first all seemed well. That was until one Saturday morning when I called because dog had an emergency. Sue McPherson who is the office manager snapped at me, was extremely rude, and never bothered to address me. Now while I understand that people get busy with their work they should maintain a good attitude and treat people with respect. I made the grave mistake of daring to complain about Kelsey and Sue who for no apparent reason or reasons I can think of decided one day that they just don't want my business. Dr Rudiger did nothing to address our concerns about how we were treated by his staff. Instead he conjured all manner of excuses that they're under pressure. Everyone who works is under scrutiny and pressure. Does that give them the right to disrespect, or be rude to people? Apparently they cannot accept constructive criticism or feedback of any kind and become furious with us instead of speaking to the appropriate/responsible parties involved. This speaks volumes about their inability to understand how this works. This puts into question how they operate and how they just do not care about how they treat others no matter how respectful you were of them. No matter how kind or generous you were-it mattered not. The most unappreciative, disrespectful bunch of characters. I must admit I never thought I'd ever get treated like this in a million years. They did me a favor and I found the perfect veterinarian right near my home! I don't recommend this place and if you're considering bringing your greatest treasure (s) here I give you a word of warning. Run like your the last two monkeys boarding Noah's Ark and it's starting to rain!!! As my dog was aging, I was in search of a new veterinary practice where he would get great, personal care. Several of my friends had been taking their animals to Dr. Jason and raved about him. For awhile, I was just taking my dog in for routine exams and vaccinations but about a month ago, my sweet boy developed an extremely virulent respiratory infection that involved gagging, retching, coughing, etc. Because this has been so hard on my dog (in part because of his age, I believe) over a long stretch, I have been in regular communication with Jason. He calls me back within a short time when I phone and leave a message. Jason has encouraged me to be in regular communication about my dog's condition and in fact, thanks me for keeping him updated. I know these interruptions to his day add to an already large burden of work, but I continue to believe he will take every step with me to get my dog healthy again. His willingness to go above and beyond each and every day has provided reassurance to me as I struggle to do all I can for my dog. What more can someone ask a person caring for your animal. And a shout out to to all of the staff there--from the techs to the receptionists (who have to answer my endless phone calls) to the office manager, you guys are so professional and you really make a difference! read more

Well my mom took her cat recently, I previously said stop going here because it's not nice. Let's see it's dirty, the employees aren't helpful, and have previously performed unnecessary X-rays and blood tests costing my mom hundreds! An annual check up cost my mom $400!! I had a large breed dog and his annuals with shots were under $100! During this visit a dog unleashed was let out of a room, he jumped up on my mom who was holding her very old blind cat who then proceeded to bite her and not let go. Then she had to ask to be roomed because the cat was scared! She has now been to her dr twice for an infection, fever & high blood pressure all as a result of the cat bite that never would have happened had the dog not scared the cat! IV antibiotics are expensive so the expensive vet bill for the cat on top of these drs visits that were completely avoidable had someone just leashed and controlled an untrained dog! read more

Our dog had developed heart failure and Dr Ryan did her best to help us prolong his life. In the end, his quality of life had deteriorated and it was advised to put him to sleep. Dr. Rudigier was the only one to pinpoint what was wrong with our aging Jack Russell. We knew he was getting sicker but had no clue where to start. We had end of life conversations with the doctor fairly quickly and Dr. Rudigier did everything he could to make sure we were able to have our boy Archie for a few more months. Absolutely awful. I would give 0 stars if it was an option. Our little yorkie was sick and had been to the vet numerous times over the past couple of months with no improvement. The vet had done X-rays in the past visits and the last time we went our yorkie was not in good shape. They then did X-rays and blood work to determine our yorkie was in heart failure. When we called to see the prognosis of how long she had, the vet told us that she he more time and not to worry. Our yorkie died a day later. This vet clearly had no idea what she was doing and had us spend $400 for nothing. Extremely sad and disappointed that this is how it ended for our yorkie. Would NOT recommend going to this vet for anyone who wants actual health care for their pet. read more

Every single employee I've met at this facility has been kind, caring and extremely competent. Today I took my kitten in because he was having issues with one of his eyes. The vet and his two techs went out of their way to explain and show me how they run their eye tests and check for tears on the cornea. It was fascinating, and then they took the time to show me how to give kitty his eye-drop medicine. I've taken my kitten here for the last 2 months or so, and they are always patient and helpful. I came out of the animal hospital feeling like they thought my cat was the most special cat they'd seen all day! I wouldn't be surprised if everyone left Amber Leaf feeling that way about their pet. :) I'm sure this will be my life-long vet. :) read more

We have been taking our pets to Amber Leaf for the past 15 years, and it's time to call it quits. This used to be a happy place, with courteous front office staff and excellent doctors. The fish tanks that sit in the lobby are a metaphor for the condition of the place now: They used to be beautiful and vibrant, but now they're covered with green slime. The place is now routinely dirty, both in the lobby and the examining rooms. The aging facility has not had an update in decades, except for a recent coat of paint - which hasn't helped much. The senior office staff is out of control. (The younger staff have always been helpful and courteous.) At one time they were kind and courteous to clients, and compassionate and caring with the animals. But they've been there too long. It seems that they're just burned out. Or perhaps they've just been allowed to operate on their own with no supervision or moral guidance. They are routinely rude and brash to clients, and appear to care less about the animals. If you're unfortunate enough to have one of the senior staffers answer the phone, it very much feels like they think they're doing you a favor to make an appointment. God forbid you just had a question to ask. I have scores of anecdotes of rude and unprofessional treatment by these senior staffers, but here's just one as an example. On one very sad occasion, we brought our beloved Carson in to end his journey. He was dying of liver cancer. The fact that this was his last trip into the exam room was well known by the staff, and the younger staff was fussing over him as he waited. On his walk into the room he stopped to sniff a stuffed animal that was part of a display on the shelf. Carson was a big guy, and the toy was right at nose level. He only sniffed it! He didn't jump, or grab the toy. He just SNIFFED it!. One of the grumpy senior staffers saw this and yelled "Hey! Leave that alone!". We were all horrified, and my wife and I said nothing - already doing our best not to cry. The last straw was last week when my wife brought our elderly, blind, diabetic dog in for grooming - with the express pre-arranged agreement that her special needs would be accommodated. The senior staff, and the groomer, could have cared less about their commitment to this little girl, because they were 'too busy' that day. (The appointment was made days in advance!) That was combined with a generous dose of the usual rudeness. The stressful, two, thirty minute car rides were all for nothing, and little Ginger returned home. A later appointment to discuss the terrible treatment with the owner, Dr. Rohrbach proved less than productive. He was disinterested in the issues, and actually accused me of being abusive to his staff. (Having recorded the entire conversation with his staff, I can certainly prove otherwise.) Dr. Rohrbach seems to be 'phoning it in' as he gets closer to retirement. After the wonderful Dr. Chernok left Amber Leaf, I was forced to choose a different vet, and chose him. On one occasion he did an entire medical 'exam' on our dog without ever actually touching him! On another occasion Rohrbach forced our 120lb shepherd mix onto one of those stainless steel examining tables, that he cranked up, so that he wouldn't have to bend over. Our dog was terrified, and again nothing was accomplished, except a brief, perfunctory conversation. It seems to me that any vet with an ounce of compassion would have abandoned the silly table, and got down on the floor to do the exam. Rohrbach has the right words, and the schmooze, but lacks any genuine care or concern for either his clients or their pets. I then tried Dr. Rudiger. He's great, and he's been our doctor for most of the eleven pets we've taken there over the years. He's kind and caring, patient and thorough, and he genuinely seems to care about the animals he treats. It has been a delight to deal with him. It appears that he's the 'heir apparent' to take over the practice when Rohrbach retires. It can't happen soon enough. Unfortunately, at the present time, Rudiger either doesn't notice the poor behavior of Rohrbach and the senior staff, or he's powerless to do anything about it. We'll miss our relationship with Dr. Rudiger, but unfortunately he doesn't operate alone or in a vacuum. Perhaps when he has full authority, the swamp will be drained and the fish tanks will be cleaned. Until then, I suggest that you take your pet elsewhere. read more

True animal lovers! The entire staff seems truly concerned about your pet's health and well-being. Had a sick (dying) puppy who was too ill to move but was near a drafty spot and the receptionist got up, got her a blanket, wrapped her in it paw-by-paw and then came back a few minutes later to make sure she was comfortable and still wrapped up tightly. During a heartbreaking time, small acts of kindness like that mean the world! We have used them for years and they have always made accommodations to see my pets around my schedule or squeeze them in under urgent circumstances. Don't go to Amber Leaf if you've got a cat that's not used to being around yelping, barking dogs. When told I would get a call back with test results for my very ill 16 yr old cat, they did not call back. After 3 days I had to call them. Also, there is one senior staffer(woman with a man's name) who acted very dismissive and was generally just an a*****e. Enough to make me seek out another clinic. My dog just had 16 teeth pulled and the remaining cleaned for s little over 500$. I have been coming here over 12 years , and my dog gets groomed 3 times a year and it's nice to see the same groomer and the same consistency in quality. This place did my loving pup wrong. They miss diagnosed her cancer for 6 months. Then sent us to a different hospital at the end.. instead of before when they didn't really know what was wrong. Her neck was bothering her and they kept guessing at the end they said she had arthritis? ??? No it was cancer!!! It was so bad by now they couldn't help her. I don't want to leave even a single star after my experience with Amber Leaf today. My boyfriend and I put down our cat recently on the 10th, Amber leaf is the vet both of our families use and that we thought we knew and could trust with something so important. When we took her, we had to update the phone number they were going to call when she was ready for us to pick her back up as we were having her privately cremated and receiving a clay print as well as an ink print that Amber Leaf does when they euthanize. The vet wrote the new number down on a sheet and promised it would be updated no problem and they would call when she was ready. I was skeptical about the woman not updating it in a more official way but I didn't say anything because like I said earlier, we believed we could trust Amber Leaf. So fast forward a week and a day later(today), we decided to call because we were told it would probably only take a week because she was euthanized on a Monday and the crematory they work with happens to pick up on Tuesdays so she would be going the very next day. We were assured it would be sooner than the standard 2 weeks they tell everyone, obviously were prepared for the possibility it would take longer. That isn't the issue I have with Amber Leaf, however, I am including every detail that I think is relevant to why I am leaving such a disappointed review. Anyways, so we called today to check on things and see if they knew when we could pick her up at all. We were very displeased to be told they called the incorrect phone number earlier today and not only that but left a message...TO PICK UP OUR GIRL. I was so upset to find out they made such a big mistake, but still, when my boyfriend got home from picking her up we just set the bag down and shared memories of her. Bringing her home brought back a lot of the sadness of losing her, and after a lot of tears we were ready to look at the urn and prints. The urn was cute with a marbled appearance and a paw print on the top. The crematory included snips of her hair which I really appreciate. I am not sure if its common but we weren't expecting that. The clay print was very nice as well, its amazing how something so small can mean so much. I pulled out the card in the bag(the last thing that was in there) and it was not the ink print, but the card verifying who cremated her and what day they did it. She was euthanized on the 10th and the slip said cremated on the 12th...we didn't get her until the 18th. The vet said the crematory is small and has one drop off day, which fine, that I can understand but the thought of us not bringing her home as soon as she could made us both very sad, but like I said we can both understand those types of circumstances. What I cannot and will not understand is why our ink print is missing from this bag. Obviously at the time we found out it was missing the vet is closed and there's nothing we can do about it right now( I sat down to write this review on my computer as soon as I discovered it was missing, I am that disgusted). I can only assume they did not do her ink print and now it is something we will never have of her, they cant take her ashes and revive her. I am lost for words how to describe my incredible grief that this is missing, that something so important could be handled so carelessly. If you have never loved an animal you would think I am crazy, I have her ashes and clay print why do I NEED the ink print? She was a member of our family, she was a best friend and we loved her very much, anything and everything we can have to remember her is so special in its own way. I am praying they just forgot to put her print in the bag and we will be able to collect it tomorrow, I will post an updated review after I know. To me, this is unacceptable and adds a whole different wave of emotions on top of the tremendous grief of losing a beloved member of our household. Our friends and families will be warned of our experience with Amber Leaf and we will more than likely be taking our kitten and any other animals we adopt to a more reliable vet. read more
