The Illinois Shakespeare Festival is a rotating series of three plays presented each year from late…read moreJune through early August. This is world class theater, attracting professional actors from around the country. It is organized/managed by Illinois State University, but the plays are performed in an outdoor theater at Ewing Manor (located at the corner of Emerson and Towanda). The theather itself is comfortable, and there isn't a bad seat in the house. The grounds of Ewing Manor are beautiful, and part of the Festival involves your chance to explore the grounds/gardens before the performance. In fact, you can bring a picnic and enjoy dinner on the lawn before the show starts. Weekend nights often feature live music, and a few nights during the season offer "special" themes, such as ISU alumni night, WGLT night, etc.. There are many great things about this Festival, but for me the best thing is the overall experience: a beautiful location, live music (on the weekends), and great live theater. I'm not even a fan of Shakespeare per se. I don't read his works and can't understand half of what he's written, but the quality of this event keeps me coming back year after year. Do yourself a favor and try it out.

It's good for that sort of thing because you can mingle but also go take a seat and enjoy the game if you like. I really enjoyed it here because it's a relaxing evening, seats are good, and there's a little hilly lawn that people can go sit in to the far left of the left field seats (usually kids). Prices aren't bad for concessions. You won't be seeing MLB-related teams here; the Corn Crib belongs to Heartland Community College and hosts collegiate summer teams. A few other sports use the stadium, too.

Parking was a bit chaotic --prepare for a long wait along Raab Rd. as you get into the lot. Somehow, once in and paying the $2, it was a quick zip to a spot. I wonder if they might find a way to streamline this in the future. Getting in and getting seated is a breeze. Stadium is new so everything is very nice. Prices are fair enough, staff mostly volunteers I believe, and a decent enough selection of food and drink for a ballpark. They may still be getting their stride, but it's a good facility, a great sport to have in town, and well worth several summer visits. My only word of caution is for anyone unfamiliar with the farm leagues --they seem to play at about half the pace of the majors. You may be in for a long night --if anything more bang for the buck (yawn) right?

Caught a performance of Chicago here the night before Valentine's Day…read more This auditorium exists inside the Bone Student Center of Illinois State University. They are currently under a bit of construction so getting into the building and finding your way around to the proper check in door was a little disorganized but once there everything seem pretty nice. The chairs are comfy...not squeaky. We got Row 3 seats and I have to be honest....they may have been a little too close to the stage. I think next time I'll shoot for row 6 or 7 to get a better line of sight. There is no drinks allowed as far I saw. Maybe bottled water? I did see they had a lounge called the Circus Room, but I'd venture a guess they don't serve alcohol since it's inside the Student Center. Chicago, the show itself, was great. Broadway calibur actors and musicians. The set was perfect with the band all in plain view. I would like to make a small note of criticism. This shows was scheduled on the same day as a touring production of The Sound of Music over at the Blooming Performing Arts Center. I feel this was in poor taste and timing between the two venues. Performing arts should always be working with each other as a team not in competition. There were plenty of empty seats available at Chicago that may have been filled if the community had not been made to choose between the two shows. Support the arts. Make it easier for everyone to attend both shows if they want to! Evita will be playing here soon.

Review Visit: November 10th, 2012…read more Where a kid can be a kid and where an adult can also be a kid. If you are wondering, I don't have any explanation why 3 adults visited a museum that is geared towards kids besides that we are all kids at heart and like to have silly fun. With that in mind, Erin, Matt, and I checked out the Children's Discovery Museum. I'm not sure exactly how we ended up wanting to explore the Children's Discovery Museum but I am glad we did. None of us have kids so it was a bit weird that 3 grown adults were walking about this museum and playing with the stuff as if we were kids, but we were never told to not play with the stuff as well. We did avoid the stuff that our adult size might break or render unusable. Overall, I don't have much to say about this place since it's been so long and I can't remember all the activities and interactive things they had. I will say that if you have kid(s), they will love this place. If you have kids and are a kid at heart, you AND your kid(s) will have a blast here.
