I go to this store almost exclusively for my indoor garden needs. I have never experienced anything other than helpful, friendly service and well stocked shelves. I have been to many other garden stores in the area, and the prices at American Ag. are usually more affordable and the staff more informed. I was motivated to write this review not only because I truly do appreciate this store, but also because I was sad to see the one star (And frankly, flat out rude) reviews posted. Myself and many others are loyal customers and I can't imagine getting one star service here. And just to clarify, I've had many interactions with the "guy with the long hair and the beard", and he has always been very friendly and helpful. read more

I don't think Nathan F's review is fair (or this shop has greatly improved since he visited). I never bother to post reviews. But the folks at this shop inspired me to drop a nice note on their behalf. I've been to quite a few hydro shops in Portland and the experiences kind of left me feeling like once you bought the stuff and walked out...you were on your own. Basically, they didn't care if you would be a repeat customer. American Agriculture (SE Stark location) really made me feel like I was walking in to a Mom & Pop shop. They were incredibly knowledgeable, patient and friendly. I was almost taken aback by how nice and attentive they were. You could tell that they were experienced professionals, stocking a very large inventory of high-quality products. Basically, they move stuff well....and thus their inventory stays high-caliber. Anyway, they honored a warranty on a defective item that I didn't even purchase there. After toiling with the manufacturer (who determined they could not repair/replace), American Agro managed to get me a pretty good amount of store credit. Even better, my new order was in hand in 24 hours! Prices were damn fair. Competitive. Plus, I got extra discounts on the stickered prices. Can't complain about that. read more

I've shopped there for many years through the new and former owners. The store is well-stocked, nicely lit and arranged with just about anything you want and didn't know you wanted. Prices are on the high side, though the staff has always been knowledgeable and friendly, taking time to thoroughly answer my questions and even suggesting a cheaper alternative to one of their products. Good place to go if you're as beginner as they won't talk over your head. read more

It was a great store to walk into. Lights and plants. But the customer service was not very good. I was purchasing a replacement bulb. He found that for me. When I asked for other more cost effective systems, we got into this strange dialog. He mentioned the "M" word first and then I found myself being asked to leave the store and I couldn't purchase the bulb. I felt set up. And as far as their signs telling you about their policy, perhaps they should hand it to everyone that comes in or make them very prominent. Bad vibes.. read more

I have literally shopped here for years. The couple of the guys who have worked here forever are pretty much the rudest people on the planet. However for the most part they know what they're talking about except for one guy who is rude and very unknowledgeable. I don't understand why they keep employees who don't want to be there. I have a business account here and after my last visit to the stark Street location I will be looking to add my business account to someone here in Vancouver Washington I am tired of being treated like a second class citizen when I go into this store especially after how much money I spend here and have spent there over a 10-year period but I am tired of it. I'm at the point where the discount I get for having a business account there is not even worth dealing with the rude customer service and very very unpersonablle staff. When you shopped somewhere for 10 years you would expect that they might even know your name instead of acting like they've never seen you before every time you go in. Walked in this store and was immediately treated like dirt. Asked a long haired dude with beard behind counter if he carried a certain product. He replied "No, we do not carry any of that company's products!" So he begrudgingly comes out from behind the counter to point to the product shelf, to show me what he did carry and a customer standing in front of the items handed me what I was looking for after obviously over hearing me. I asked sales person a couple questions about product and he told me to read the label!! Customer was able to answer my specific questions and inform me there was a better store to go to and recommended Evergreen garden supply. As I was talking to the customer who was much more helpful than the Metal head "wanna be" who was standing at the counter playing with his hair talking to some tattooed chick about a naked bicycle ride happening in Portland saying how he would like to participate... Hope that bike seat gives you hemorrhoids and your hair gets stuck in the spokes. You were a jerk and I will not be back. Your loss, I spent 975.00 at Evergreen Garden Supply on Sandy Blvd. they took the time to answer my questions and then some, gave a great discount and were not condescending in anyway. Avoid this store and go see the guys at Evergreen! read more

I Agree with Mister "Michael W.".... I had a similar experience about 6 months back where I was looking for a bulb and the guy behind the counter made a comment in reference to the lumen output being an acceptable loss on the cheaper bulb they carry as the higher priced ones were only marginally higher in lumen output. But when I asked if they were popular..... He turns and asks another employee if they were "popular"...Ant that other employee said "Oh yeah everyone growing "M" buys them". So, I repeat what he said back to him in a question form kinda in SHOCK because I could feel the tension in the room escalate the moment everyone heard him say that.to me. And the store workers got all psycho and started freaking out on me ..... telling me "you can't talk that way in this store" then instructed the guy who ORIGINALLY said the "M" word to have me leave the store immediately....I was like...."NO WAY DID THAT JUST HAPPEN TO ME!". Finding myself out in the parking lot at 9am with no bulb and a goofy smile from my confusion of the Twilight Zone event. I WON'T be back.....EVER read more
