This review is for Flight 245 from DCA to LAX on Friday 8/12/16. The equipment on this route is a 737-800. Originally scheduled for around 5:45PM the departure was delayed at the gate for a couple of hours. Then we sat on the runway due to weather delays and rerouting. Unusual very loud buzzing from the right engine on takeoff. I did not hear the same from the left. It quieted down at altitude. You guys should probably look at that engine. (I fly a lot and it got my attention as a not routine sound.) I had a bulkhead seat and I was more comfortable with all that leg room, however the power outlet at seat 7D does not work and my devices began to run out of juice about an hour short of LAX. When we finally made it into LAX we sat on the runway and taxied around for a long while looking for an open gate. I did get to play some Pokeman Go out on the taxiway because there was a gym out there. All in all I got in about 3 hours or so behind schedule. LAX was jammed and it took us about an hour to exit the airport. On the plus side the crew was great and the pilot kept us informed of all the reasons for our delays. None of which were the crew's fault so had there not been air traffic control delays, weather issues, dead power outlets, weird sounds, and the stress of LAX itself, this would have been a five star review. read more

Attempting to fly from DC to New Orleans on Sunday August 11th. Thus far sitting at the gate at DCA for over an hour. Apparently there is an "IT issue" with Republic Airlines or American Airlines and the pilots could not electronically send their Flight plan to the company and ATC (Air Traffic Control) in the mean time we are cramped up in an E-170. Waiting over an hour and a half. American Airlines-Ultimate FAILURE. I would NOT recommend American Airlines to anyone. read more

Friday (6-17-22) Flight at DCA (2293) was completely overbooked. Gate staff seemed desperate to get people to take other flights for vouchers. Once on the plane, the flight attendants started playing musical chairs with passengers trying to make sure every seat was filled (some ticketed passengers did not make their flight). This shuffling of passengers caused a significant delay causing us to (according to the pilot) "miss our window to leave on time and now we have to wait for a new departure window". We sat for about 40 more minutes waiting to leave. This caused me to miss my connecting flight in MIA (or so i thought). I was relieved to see that my connecting flight from Miami to Orlando was also significantly delayed (more incompetence on AA's part) and i thought I would still make it to where i paid to be (just a little late). The gate staff at Miami had us sit there for about an hour until about midnight, telling us "just a few more minutes".....then at at midnight I get a notification through the AA app that the flight from MIA to MCO had been cancelled. My heart really sank for the group of disabled elderly women who were just left standing there with an 0-empathy american airlines gate attendant and the very indifferent early-am airport staff. i hope they were ok..... This double-Failure on American Airlines part cost me over $300 in hotel and rental car fees, and gas financial burden. Not to mention the perpetual stress and anxiety throughout the entire ordeal . At MIA i was told to go to gate 37 and "speak to an agent" (at 1230AM). There were at least 150 people in that line to speak to 1 AA agent for what? A minuscule hotel voucher, no ride to the hotel, and to be told there were no flights until Sunday/Monday? no thanks. I had to rent a car and drive from MIA to Orlando at 1am so that my entire weekend was not ruined by American Airlines incompetence. I got a very cute text from AA Saturday evening telling me that AA had re-booked me on a SUNDAY afternoon flight from Miami to Orlando.I am absolutely disgusted with American Airlines. I repeatedly see this when I fly American: Flight Oversold Volunteers Needed. Not having a seat assignment nearly gave me a heart attack today. I eventually got a seat on my delayed flight, but the gate attendants were not communicating about that process, nor making overhead announcements recruiting volunteers to take a dingy bribe to take a different flight. Apparently, the ticket one purchases is not reserving a seat unless one upgrades to do that. IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE THAT IN LARGE BOLD LETTERS ON THE BOOKING SITE!!! American airline saved my life! Our horrible experience with another airline was ridiculous. The flight with the other airline was canceled out of the blues. We manage to rush to the airport to buy a flight with this airline. We took with American airline in such a rush. Thanks the representative on the phone for letting us know that even if it is two hours before the plane board, we can still buy the ticket in person at the airport. We were an hour and half before it started boarding. During the flight, they offered whole can of soda and mini snacks for free. The flight was quick and the time on the plane was very comfortable. We had a flight to Phoenix then had a flight to Hawaii from there, they delayed our flight in dc so we missed our flight in Phoenix the only way to get to Hawaii was to fly to Phoenix then to fly to Hawaii on a different airline however American didn't tell us that and we had to call the other airline. Also they have canceled flights numerous times. read more

On February 4, 2020 I contacted American Airlines (AA), to book a trip, hoping to use some of my advantage miles I've acquired over the years. I was told I had a negative balance of 30,000 miles due to a redemption for magazines back in 2014. When I try to dispute it AA indicated because it is from 2014 they can't do anything. AA further indicated that this is in essence a loan and that I will have to pay it back to bring my loan to zero balance. Additionally AA indicated there were many redemptions at the same time and what may have happened is I kept pushing the submit button and all these counts as a redemption and added up. I explained to AA that I do not get magazines, or papers and never had a subscription. Additionally, I never received a notice of the redemption or a loan and never would have agreed to it. Approximately 12-16 months prior to today, February 4, 2020 I tried to use miles to plan a trip. AA indicated to me that they did not have record of an account for me and that they would have to create one. I researched all my travels and gave dates of every trip for over a 12 month period. AA did not mention any redemptions or negative balance on the account. I am appalled that AA would do this and generate a debt to me and I have no knowledge or notice about it. Other than a mortgage I carry no loans or debt. My credit is flawless. I have no problem paying for what I receive, but like every consumer I should not have to pay for what I do not. This is so fraudulent and to find a company like AA doing something like this is outlandish. I want the mileage I earned and my account made current. Cancelled flight without alerting me. Put me on the last available flight the NEXT DAY... then they dare to tell me that I'm lying and I didn't have a flight today and that my flight has always been scheduled for the next day. DCA to PHX. The gate agent announces that, the flight is full and therefore passengers with group 4 on the boarding ticket must check their carry-on bags as there will be no space in the overhead bin. I get flagged by the gate agent just before entering the gate to get on board because my bag is oversized. How could it be oversized when the same bag was NOT oversized from PHX to DCA? We both put my bag in one of those templates at the gate and voila, it fits perfectly. Then the agent says it must be checked because the flight is full. I point out to him that, I am in Group 2; only the Group 4 was required to check in. Agent says the situation changed. I check in the bag. While walking into the aircraft, I see whole bunch of overhead bin spaces that are empty. I ask the flight attendant why I was forced to surrender. Flight attendant passed the buck saying that I have to take that up with the gate agent. I deplane and go back to the gate agent to confront. The gate agent apologizes for the inconvenience but cannot retrieve my bag since it is checked in. The snide agent said I could fly tomorrow. Well, how can I? The bag is already checked, and flight the next day means I have to stay in a hotel without my bag. Not only the agent was snide but stupid. I took photographs of overhead bin as well as empty seats on the aircraft. The statement of "flight being fully booked" was a lie. Insufficient overhead bin space was also a lie. Upon arrival, I submitted my complaint to AA's website. By the way, their website does not allow uploading of photos for evidence. There is no phone number for person to person voice complaint. Their apologies do NOT un-ring the bell. I will do everything in my power never to fly AA again and persuade others fly another airline. read more

I can only come to the conclusion that American Airlines employees are overworked and underpaid. There is no other reason I can come up with that would explain so many rude, unpleasant, and downright nasty people. After breaking my back and hip, I'm not able to walk very well. Short stretches are doable, standing more than a few minutes impossible. When calling American to arrange wheelchair transport, I spoke with a rushed and distracted CSR. Her unprofessionalism was only a taste of what was to come. At DCA, the woman at the gate counter was rude and unpleasant to a well-dressed but frantic woman asking for help. She treated her dismissively and rudely. But when a cabin crew member in uniform came over, she was suddenly all sweetness and light. After he left, she went over to a mother with her baby and began jerking the stroller around, impolitely asking her how to break it down. On our return trip, after we arrived at our gate at ORD, I dismissed the wheelchair pusher. We had about a half hour plus wait, and I didn't want her to lose out on other trips. Ten minutes later, I heard my name badly butchered over the PA. I used my cane to walk over to the counter. The woman looked at me with an exasperated expression and asked 'Can you walk? Otherwise we'll have to arrange for someone to come over and help you.' Her tone indicated that making that call would be a herculean task equivalent to carrying a plane full of passengers on her back to DC. I replied I could walk for short stretches, but I was rather slow. Not even the wisp of a smile as she promptly ignored me and went back to her clickety clacking. We'd purchased business class seats for the longer legs of our trip, and coach for the short legs, so on this flight, our seats were in the back of the plane. The rudeness of the woman had me worried and anxious, so ten minutes later I asked my husband to wheel me to the front of the regular line so I could hobble as quickly as possible to my seat and get out of everyone's way. The second woman working the counter, named Beth, glared over at me and said in a snotty tone, 'Can I help you??' We were not at the counter, nor asking for assistance, but I told her I was concerned about having to get by others in the plane since I wasn't able to walk very well. She snapped, 'Well, you are going to be sitting here for a loong time. A VERY LONG TIME.' I looked at my husband in surprise. The sign said we would be boarding in fifteen minutes-we began boarding in less than ten. You know what? It really, really sucks not being able to walk. But I try to put a good face on it and not spread around my misery. We just wanted to have a nice trip together and we always plan ahead so my problem doesn't become someone else's problem. I was never treated so nastily on Delta, United, Airtran or Southwest. If there had been only one incidence of a rude, nasty employee at American Airlines, I'd let it go. But so many nasty people was more than just a coincidence, it was the norm. I'd give zero stars, except for the pleasant flight attendant who fussed so much over a baby in the seats opposite us that everyone within hearing had a big grin on their face. And after being so entertained and pampered, the little one was quiet as a lamb the entire flight. So the two stars I'm giving are for him. read more

Worssstttt experience with this airlines. Computers wouldn't let me check in early for my 551am flight and there was a hugggeee line to check in at the airport. Self serve kiosks couldn't locate or print boarding passes. Only one person had the authority to override the system and find the reservations and by the time they did, they wouldn't let us on the flight (which hadn't left yet) and put us on standby for the next one 4 hours later. My experience with American Airlines was terrible! I was coming back from Jamaica and missed my connection flight because of the lines coming through customs in Charlotte (CLT). My original flight was from Charlotte to DCA. I ended up having to take a flight from Charlotte to BWI although my luggage was scheduled to go to Reagan National (DCA). I was reassured that when I made it to DCA, my luggage would be in the American Airlines office; not left out in the open. THIS WAS TOTALLY NOT THE CASE. Praise God we actually had the energy to drive from BWI to DCA after landing at 10pm. Our bags were OUTSIDE of the American Airlines office. My fiance said we should just walk up and grab our bags to see if we were stopped and asked for our luggage tags. No one checked! No one even greeted us. Mind you, our bags were on a plane that arrive about two hours before we arrived at DCA. I was extremely disappointed. Anyone could have taken our stuff as it sitting out unattended. A couple of recent trips on AA were a serious improvement from the last time I wrote a review for the DCA AA location in 2014. The kiosks still leave a lot to be desired, but that is hardware/software issue; however the staff seems to have been reminded that we the passengers are the primary purpose of them being there. No surly humans the past few flights (other than other passengers). Significant improvement on the handling of baggage too, although the fact that DCA demands you drag your bag(s) from checking into the flight over to the bag drop through a throng of other passengers is beyond me (again not the fault of the local staff...unless it's part of their union agreement). Overall, AA, at least on the surface, has internalized the idea of improving the air travel experience. read more

AA does suck. I'm not going to complain about delays due to weather, maint., etc., because it happens to all airlines in all cities. I'm going to talk about what they have under their control. Service - Straight up sux. Yes, I'm comparing them to their competitors. It can't be BWI, because SW service is Awesome here. In the morning they are cranky and bitchy, and they always seem to be late in the morning. Not sure what's going on. Frequent Flyer Program - excellent. Probably the best in industry. regular cabin - it's small and cramped. I'm 6'2" so I notice every little inch. The S80 which dominate AA fleet should be renamed to 80s SUCK. First class cabin - never had a chance to eat dinner or lunch. Breakfast was good. Nuts were good. Seats were ample and comfortable. Lounges - Again i'm bordering on SUX. For domestic, I usually only in there for 2-3 hours max. So i'm looking for more for drinks/snacks. AA, you get free ice water and chex mix. Everything else you pay yourself. Lounges are nice and business area is excellent. But I use non of that crap, so I'm going to say SUX since I wanted some cheese and coke, which I can't get here unless I pay. Also no free internet, only if you have Admirals membership. Dont say its free if you have Admiral's membership. Adding a requirement means it's NOT FREE. So sum it up, if you are not flying on first class cabin, do not fly AA. Simple as that. I fly 20-30 flights/year, mostly on AA. I'm going to remedy that this year. read more

Absolutely the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. Checking in early online does you zero good if you need to have your bags checked. AA workers stand around and gossip while the lines pile up, offering only nasty attitude when you ask for help. Won't be a future customer after this experience. If you've had the time of your life on this airline, then well you've just struck out really lucky that one time (or you should be getting out some more), or if you've lost all happiness on one of their flights it's just really bad luck. American Airlines, like any other decent airline, is an airline, they tend toward the average. A really good one time experience will soon be washed away with a string of bad ones, and vice versa. Over time it will always gravitate toward the average. I just did a fifteen and a half hour direct flight, and going to take the same again in a couple of days. It was fine. The food was alright, they served dinner when we took off and handed us a 'handy bag' with a few edibles for the next 12 hours. Then finished off with the breakfast service. Could I have expected more, sure; a meal service in the middle would have been nice. Seats were comfortable, the service was polite, and things were generally on time. read more

It was very disconcerting to see so much oversize luggage brought onto the plane after all the grief we went through to follow the rules about carry on size. We could have avoided the $25 checked bag fee by using two oversized carry-on's that were checked for free as we boarded!!! read more

I contacted American Airlines group reservation for a flight of 12 to fly from Sacramento CA to Washington DC, round trip with a departure date of 4 Nov and a return date of 8 Nov. Group reservations secured 12 seats for our group on AA flight 6243 from Sacramento to LAX , with an arrival time of o/a 11:45 with a connecting flight, flight 2532, leaving LAX at 13:09 with an arrival time to DC at 2100hrs. We arrived on time to LAX and immediately went to the shuttle bus run by American Airlines to get from the "outer" American terminal to the American Airline terminal area at Terminal 4. The shuttle service was incompetent and we waited in line over 50 minutes to board a single shuttle. We asked the personnel in charge of the shuttle, American Airlines employees, to see if they could hold our connecting flight. They said they couldn't. We arrived at terminal 4 at 1300hrs, after getting inline for the shuttle at 12, to find the gate closed and no personnel at the gate. Our plane would sit there another 15 minutes before it departed without us. I went to the customer service desk and the best offer they could provide was to spend the day at LAX, board a flight to Phoenix at 1930hrs, spend three more hours in Phoenix and then board a red eye to DC to arrive at 0700hrs on 5 Nov. I secured the tickets for my group and found our seats scattered throughout those flights with the lowest possible boarding priority. Your personnel, from the initial ticketing, to a failure to prioritize departing passengers arriving at LAX with quick connecting turnovers to deplane the plane first, to the truly incompetent ground personnel who failed to prioritize passengers with a quick connecting flight turnaround failed in their basic responsibility. We missed an entire night, forfeited our pre-paid hotel rooms, and spent the entire day in a corner of LAX. At no point did any American employees express any concern over their actions and there was literally no one who cared or to even speak to as their "Customer service department" is not connected to their "Customer Relations" department (I am not making this up). I dutifully filed a complaint and should hear from them in 7 to 10 business days. This is in perfect weather with no maintenance issues. They are just morons. Now think about their flight maintenance. read more

I was told to come to the airport to try and get on an earlier flight I was told to stand in a super long long as the flight I wanted/needed was boarding still not at the front of the line. Worse experience to date. They nickel and dime you to death. Extra for every baggage. Extra for snacks. Extra for WiFi. Extra for earphones. JetBlue and Alaska do not charge for most of these things. JetBlue currently has free WiFi while in beta and they have a TV in every headrest. I waited 40 minutes to get checked in. They only had 1-2 persons at the counter while about 40 passengers were waiting. Not good at all for a family. PROS: They had friendly flight attendants and great communications from the pilot. Good movie as well. They allow you to check in your carry-ons at the gate for free. Not a total disaster. However, I would never fly this airline again. read more

Worst airline yet! First of all had two gates right next to each other boarding at the same time it was a mob scene. Then they over booked the flight. Then everyone used ALL of the over head space with there over sized luggage so those of us lucky enough got to put ours 18 rows behind us where we had to walk back into others clothing the walk ways. I don't even want to give them one star at DCA. The abysmal check in agents and system where you schlepp bags from the counter to another area is horrible. AA is too cheap to put in an X-ray machine behind the check in desks at DCA as well as a working bag mover. I've been on AA for more than 3 million miles and I am fed up. Delta has far better pleasant agents as well as a working appropriate bag handling system. I going to switch when possible. read more

May 19th, I flew from Barcelona to Washington via Miami. Going forward, I will avoid flying American Airlines. May 19th, my wife and I arrived at the Miami from Barcelona, Spain in route to our final destination of Washington,DC. In Barcelona, we were asked to check our Carry On baggage due to the expectation that the overhead storage was already full. Upon arrival in Miami, our connecting flight to Washington was delayed from 3:53 pm to 5:20 due to issues with the two bathrooms on the plane. The pilot gave everyone the opportunity to step off the plane until the problem was resolved by maintenance. One of the AA gate attendance began arguing with customers for leaving the plane even though we explained to him that this was something approved by the captain. When we finally arrived in Washington, DC we were told that our carry on bags did not arrive with our plane. Even after over an hour delay, the bags didn't get placed on the plane. This is unacceptable. On May 20th we were contacted by American Airlines that so far they only have 1 of the missing bags in Washington, DC even though the bag tracker shows they both did in fact arrive in DC. We were also told that it would be as late as 4pm today (the next day) that we would receive the 1 bag. I am currently on hold right now with American Airlines after waiting over an hour to speak with a representative to find out the status of my 2nd bag. The first bag finally arrived at 12:53 pm. They finally tracked down the second bag and I was originally told it would be delivered by 10 pm Monday evening. I received an email alert at 11:30 pm that the bag was out for delivery. So now i am waiting up wondering when this bag will be delivered tonight. Right now it is close to midnight. So, it's been over 28 hours since we arrived back to DC without both bags. This is by far one of the worse flight experiences for my wife and I. I will add that much of this is also due to the overall poor customer service given throughout the entire Miami, FL airport. But, unfortunately American Airlines is a Primary flight provider there. I will go with other options going forward. This is a poorly run organization and it continued all the way to Washington, DC read more

What is the deal? Great ads, but they don't even try to live up to their own hype. Half the flight attendants are just there for the paycheck. They seem to assume that if they do their job, they don't have to smile. There is zero consistency. They don't even attempt to duplicate positive experiences. We are always tempted to upgrade to first class. A complete waste of money. Maybe if you're flying more than 6 hours and need to lie down for your health. Don't worry, the flight attendants won't wake you, because then you may need something and they'll have to work. A shame. It is so close to being a great airline. No consistency. Worst airline experience of my life in Washington D.C. today at Ronald Reagan Airport (and I fly A LOT). From the moment I walked in the door every employee I encountered was rude and unhelpful. I had plenty of time to get on my plane and was not allowed to get a boarding pass because there was an "issue" with my online check in. Put on standby for a later flight. Called to complain and phone rep was a complete b*tch. Told me I was "lucky to get anything after being late". I usually fly Southwest and am now certain that is the right choice whenever possible. AA internet check in is worthless at DCA. You have to check in at the airport and re-enter all the information. Everything is self serve and the scanners do not work. Only 2 AA staff were aiding 16 self-check in terminals. Worst check in process ever. Full service was not available. They did not even put the bag on the belt for you. There was a separate line for that. Clearly the whole check-in process was not reviewed by anyone. This review is based on an experience at DCA, Washington. read more

I have a suggestion for the next company wide professional development. Give all the employees mirrors and practice smiling or at least developing a look other than an irritated grimace. Our plane was delayed at 11:55. We were placed on 3 different standby planes. Although we were never below 5 on the standby list, we kept getting bumped by...wait for it...EMPLOYEES...NON-PAYING people over customers! Hey, AA, your employees aren't happy even though you let them bump paying customers, and your unhappy customers aren't going to fly with you! Keep giving those free seats away! The planes are old! The drink service was subpar. I WILL NEVER FLY AMERICAN AIRLINES AGAIN!!!!! Pitiful! read more

First flight cancelled due to weather. That's ok--weather, or an act of God--AA is not to be blamed. We (my child and I) were rebooked on an 11am flight the next morning. Fine. Then 8am, we get a text saying that 11am flight was cancelled. I called AA customer service and find out that it was a crew-related cancellation. Automatically I was rebooked for the 5pm flight, which I ask to be changed to an earlier 4pm. With all the delays, it lands at the scheduled landing time for the 5pm flight. Now my return flight initially had confirmed adjacent seats with my child but because of almost a two-day delay I extend my stay. The AA customer service agent won't put me and my child in adjacent seats. There are $14-24 premium per seat, none of them adjacent. I will have to wing it and hope that they are not overbooked and I still can get adjacent seats without having to ask another customer to switch seats with me. read more
