No air conditioning at terminal 6. Feels like 90 degrees. It's awful. Everyone is miserable. How can this be?

This review is not about the airport itself but about the Budget Car Rental department which is the worst car rental carrier in that state!!! They wouldn't refund my money because I didn't have my ID , WHICH PPL do make mistakes EVERYDAY! The customer service department SUCKS AND IS VERY RUDE!!! I stood in line for an hour and a half just to be told that I couldn't even change the reservation in my man's name! STRAIGHT BULL! I'm going to complain to corporate about their customer service and business practices!!! read more

Do I like that I didn't have to go to Dulles for an international flight? Sure. Did I enjoy flying out of BWI's Concourse E? Definitely not. If you haven't been to this concourse before (and you may not have - it's much smaller than the others and isn't connected to A, B, and C, where the Southwest flights are - and since BWI is practically Southwest-only now, I hadn't been to E), it's tiny. There's one little shop and one little bar and grill. Not much else there at all, so very little to do if you prefer to arrive a little early and then explore or walk/wander. We had dinner at Passports Bar & Grill since it was the only restaurant on the concourse (there was one or two others back at the intersection of D and E, but we weren't sure we had enough time to walk back there, eat, and make it back to board our flight), but I wouldn't say I was thrilled about it. But, like I said, you'll have very few choices if you're flying from Concourse E. Don't expect much and eat before you arrive if you can! read more

Large, accommodating, and perfect for military flights. This concourse, at least currently, is entirely dedicated to flights for military personnel. This makes it all the better... not as busy, just a large area for personnel to gather, relax, and get ready for that long, daunting trek to Ramstein. Since I travel a lot I feel like I'm a decent judge of what I like in an airport. This review is specifically for Concourse E. I typically will grab a Starbucks on my way through. Restrooms also maintained with proper supplies. There are various store to chose from such as Hudson News which I have grabbed a water or magazine. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is a very busy and nice size airport. You should always arrive at least 2 hours prior to your flight from this airport as security lined can be very long at times. The rental car station is about a 12 minute drive from the airport. They have big shuttle buses running all the time that will take you to the rental car stop. Again, give yourself plenty of time to drop off your car, get on a bus and arrive at the airport for your flight. I traveled into Baltimore September 11, and left September 12. On arrival September 11, I noticed a huge security presence with police carrying huge guns. It was kind of eerie traveling on this date, but at the same time with the heightened security I felt safe. When I left Baltimore September 12, hurricane Florence was approaching the East Coast. There was much more traffic than normal do to folks trying to beat the airline chaos with the approaching hurricane weather. read more

Minus 5 stars. Not only did we have to walk across the terminal to catch our connecting flight, we had to leave the airport entirely and go thru TSA security again. All in the one hour span from Alaska Air landing at the D gates. We had to get to C5 for our American flight. Shouldn't be a problem, but at this airport, we literally had to wait in line for THE ONLY TSA SECURITY LANE . This was literally just inside the front entrance of BWI. Which is, to us, the Most Moronic Airport ever. All flights through here should issue the disclaimer that only A, B, and C gates are connected. Like we said, moronic. Add to that, the gate personnel standing at the end of the walkway, there to collect excess carry ons, said they couldn't take ours as the bags hadn't been tagged up front. Well, we were up front, but not at the ticket counter. So, wtf. read more

My favorite airport in the DMV area. This airport is easily accessible from the MARC and Amtrak trains, as well as, parking is affordable, and there are shuttles for everything! Both international and domestic are in the same building which is super convenient. The airport is very walkable so you don't have to worry about those airport trains. I really enjoy that there is a Southwest hub here. There is a wing of the airport dedicated to Southwest. I have heard rumors that they are also planning to expand this wing! I normally fly Spirit out of here, it is my mode of transportation for 80% of my flights and I really appreciate that The Club is located in the same wing as majority of the Spirit flights. The international wing is alright, I feel there could be a little more work done here. The airport itself needs to have more outlet-friendly seating, I feel like this is lacking. I enjoy the variety of shops and dining options and particularly like the Silver Diner. There is also a gym located by the D gates. You can rent out clothes, use the gym and showers all for a fixed fee which is great if you have a long layover. TSA precheck lines can get SUPER busy during holidays to make sure to come in 20 minutes earlier than planned for that. read more

I hate flying. I hate waiting. I hate crowded airports. And I especially hate my privacy being violated...as I feel it is every time I go through those gawd-awful body scanners at the TSA checkpoints. With that being said, this was not a bad airport. The rental car return went smoothly, TSA processed a long line quicker than expected. I had two slices of pizza in my bag for the long flight. Pro tip: any food in your bag-even if allowed--should be removed and placed in those bins for easy scanning. I love that there are plenty of areas to sit and wait for your flight, great food options, and even rocking chairs along the long windows where you can watch planes take off and land. And rental car pick up and return was pretty easy. However, if you are arriving at night, be warned--the signs beyond the airport area are minimal, and there are very few street lights in the area. Take time before you are leaving to orient yourself, plug destinations into your GPS system, or plot on the paper map where you are going to avoid getting lost. Overall, even though this was a bit of a drive for my visit to the DC area, it was worth it in my opinion. read more

A surprisingly comfortable place to spend a long layover. Lots and lots of great dining options in and around each terminal. Both good fast food options and sit down restaurants. (That amazingly only one Starbucks in the entire airport, once you are past security). There are quite a few stores for clothing gifts and other items. If you're looking to kill time different way, there's also a 1K/20 minute "cardio trail" that is marked with signs around each of the terminals. The signs are green and looks similar to what you would see on an actual outdoor hiking trail. all in all if you have to get trapped in an airport for six hours like I was recently, it's not a bad place to be. read more

I love bwi. They do a great job of getting you in and out. The treadmill things that they have between terminals really speed you on your way. Service is awesome and you really feel like they are trying to retain your business. Unlike Atlanta, they have all the attendants you need to get through the hassle of security. I may be overly critical of Long security lines, but it is out of appreciation for airports that fully staff their teams to make the experience seamless for the customers. read more

A lot of stores a closed. When stuck overnight, it's nearly impossible to sleep due to the PA system CONSTANTLY repeating the same annoying messages. Between 2300 and 0400, when there aren't any flights coming in or going out, WHY is it necessary to keep blasting the same messages over and over again? It is very uncomfortable and most people here seem to hate their lives, as well as other people. WORST airport south of Jersey. read more

Ate at Arby's for the first time in 100 years and I quickly remembered why I haven't been there in a while. The person taking orders looked bored and despite there being zero people behind us, rushed us through the order and made mistakes in the process. No worries, this kind of thing will be replaced by a kiosk soon. Food court was as food courts usually are but there was a dedicated person wiping tables and the trash was emptied regularly and somehow the floors were clean. Very surprising! Plenty of shops to help kill time while waiting for your flight. read more

I always have good luck at this concourse. BWI is a pretty small and efficient airport if you ask me. In the 13 years that I lived here, I haven't had very bad experiences. While security may look long, it goes pretty fast. One thing that I have noticed is that the TSA pre check lines are often longer than the regular lines. My only gripe with this place is that I opt out for the security meaning that I don't go through the scanners. Each time I've been questioned as to"why" with some snarky remarks. I don't really think its any of their business but asking out of general curiosity is different from the way they spoke to me. Good service here, not so nice people...but it's an airport...just get me where I need to go. read more

Only did a Southwest Airlines transfer here. I was one my way to Seattle with Mrs. K. for two days then on to Alaska. We flew east to go west so had a nice 7.5 hour trip from Naples to Seattle. Happy for the transfer just not happy with going east. We really had no problems with this airport and it seemed to be in fine working order and clean. read more

The TSA here are total thieves. Be warned. It's happened more than 3 times in three different terminals. They are looking for things to steal. I nearly lost my watch the last time. DO NOT REMOVE expensive items. Have the TSA wand or seach you. If you put it on the belt for the scanner it's up for theft. They wear badges and you think you can trust them like a police officer. BWI has been nicely renovated into the 21st century boasting a good number of lay-over food and layover worthy relaxation options. There is WiFi throughout the facility and the customer service is on-par. TSA is doing this airport a disservice however; with the visibly challenged staffing plan. Plan to arrive for domestic flights no less than 2hrs ahead as the wait to clear the security check point is more than lengthy. read more

Absolutely the worst airport and the worst concourse is definitely D and E. I have been at this airport numerous times and have missed flights because their security takes over 2 hours. They never have enough lines open or properly staffed. The only airport where you can show up at 4am for a 6am flight and miss your flight. The last time I was here I had to buy a CLEAR account just to make my flight. I wish there was a zero star option. Ridiculous. It is not worth the cheaper flights at BWI to drive out here and deal with this. I will take my services to DCA and IAD. The sad part about it is that terminal D and E are brand new. read more

The terminal was bright and clean. Baggage claim area was roomy and clean. The reason for only three stars was the inefficient set up of Uber and Lyft services. After picking my luggage at arrival area of the 1st floor, I had to go back upstairs to the departure area to catch Uber. It was confusion and chaos for both drivers and riders. Luckily for me, I had FYI from my daughter about this crazy system. read more

TSA issues, as usual, at BWI. Even in the pre-screened line. The electronic chirp went off when I went through the body scanner, and the TSA employee said, "It's your shoes". I replied that these same shoes had been all over the world, through various scanners, and there have been no problems. "You have to remove your shoes.", said the TSA automaton. Yeah, that didn't work. Then, a manual search. Then, a search of my carry-on, which yielded the revelation that my tube of Colgate toothpaste was 4 ounces over the limit. So, they confiscated that. America, you can sleep safer tonight - you will not be harmed by my toothpaste. 20 minutes later, I'm on my way. Nothing found except the too-big tube of Colgate. Sheesh! read more

BWI is a fantasist airport there is one big problem however TSA Precheck They have no one to prescreen TSA pre check plus they only open one Pre check lane in the entire airport Every time I come to this airport the pre check line snaked all the way to the ticket counters and no one is there to direct traffic many times people wait in the precheck line only to be turned away once they get to the counter because they stood in the wrong line the entire time I have gone to the non precheck lanes and consistently get through security faster in the regular lanes BWI is such a great airport why can't they take a lesson from every other airport in their country and improve the Pre check lanes? read more

This is a hot-or-miss airport. Baggage claim is reliably slow and the car rental hub is a good 20 minute bus ride from the airport. The food court has a good selection, but no one is friendly anywhere! Flying from Dallas Love Field to BWI is a stark contrast in terms of service and friendliness. read more

Concourse E at BWI is sad. There's a single overpriced food option (Passports Bar & Grill), a duty free shop, and a single news stand that's only open for brief periods of time. It's a single hallway that's maybe 1k feet long. So far the staff has been rude during check in (although that's par for the course for TSA, the most worthless of all government employees). Definitely bring your own food in. For drinks your out of luck. We brought an empty Nalgene that we filled up at one of the two water fountains. If you want anything else be ready to feel taken advantage of. Obviously you don't have a whole lot of options when taking an international flight but hopefully this at least tips you off to come well supplied and sets your expectations. read more

This is a nice airport you can get in and out and no problem. The TSA lines are pretty fast if you have TSA PreCheck you are golden.

I travel a lot. Hubs, regionals, podunk little one gate airports. I've flown in and out of airports where workers run down the runway to chase away chickens before a plane takes off. BWI is a big airport and a major hub for Southwest. I expect a bit more than keeping the runway clear of chickens. In fairness there are a lot of moving parts to a big airport and there really is no one to hold accountable for everything. Let's start with what the airport authority is responsible for. The bathrooms fall short of clean. They are okay, but not clean. There needs to be more attention to the floors so I can put my laptop bag down while I *ahem* use the facilities. Some power points have been added but there are quite simply not enough. They are clustered too close together so even if you can find an outlet you may not be able to use your device (much less maintain positive physical control as expected by security). 117VAC and 5V USB charging should be distributed along every seat. Better airports do that. Heck, lesser airports do that. The airport authority is also responsible for the selection of vendors and therefore of their quality. The restaurants really need better management. No one really wants to be in an airport but restaurant works need to do a better job of pretending. Recent changes in van shuttle service have thrown everything into disarray. Better signage about who is and is not authorized for pick-up would help a lot. Police do a lot of standing around and not much helping people or facilitating traffic flow. TSA needs to be held to account for performance. TSA Pre-check hours are limited and Pre-check is not available at all concourse entrances. I had my Global Entry interview at BWI some time ago and had a very good experience there. I suspect the issues are driven by higher level budgeting and staffing decisions. Pre-check availability is still a problem. I go through security with some odd things. The details are not important. I travel with the TSA guidelines on what is approved. Not long ago I was stopped at security for two different bags (serious electronics in my laptop bag and a self-inflating personal flotation device). The TSA officer was pretty sure the was a problem and responsibly called a supervisor. That gentleman took about a minute to catch up and then asked if I was pressed for time. I was not and said so. He took advantage of the opportunity for a training moment, gathered a number of officers and went over the guidelines (which I conveniently handed to him *grin*). I was really impressed. I wish I'd saved his name. It might come in handy. Really I wish I had written a commendation letter for him. Southwest does a pretty good job at BWI. Baggage handling could be faster. United and Delta do a pretty good job also. My best and worst experiences have been with American which means they could afford to work on consistency. read more

So there are definite pros and cons to this airport. I have been to a lot of airports and this just doesn't rate up there as one of the best ones in my opinion. The pros - it's very open, they offer a lot of food options (big plus for that), they have shops to look through if you have time, it's normally kept pretty clean for being such a busy airport and they have a lot of parking options and spaces. Also it is very easy to get in and out of the airport. The cons- there are several employees that are not very friendly. This is a large con for me. It never hurts to be nice even if you are not outgoing or overly friendly. Just be nice. This is everyone from airline agents to the food/store employees. So it's an overall vibe at BWI. They airline employees are not overly knowledgeable when it comes to flights and options. This is a major setback in the airline industry. You have to know how to fix an issue and answer questions. You have to know your job. So all in all BWI has some major improvements to make for me to rate this higher. Just step up your game a little and you would be right there with the other major airports. read more

Southwest has some great flights out of BWI and I have to say I have had little or no delays when using this airport opposed to DCA.

Tourist and travelers want friendly efficient service. They might can go one without the other, but no here has one or the other. From the minute you get to the identity checker for TSA who grunts and nods his head only to the tremendous lack of efficiency through the security line. I feel this is an improvement that would be easily solved with hospitality training. And I understand TSA can't be over the board friendly but if the guys just looked like they liked their job it would be nice. Customer service in the food court doesn't get any better. read more

I am taking a flight from the east coast to the west coast. After boarding the plane...I'm still here almost 2 hours later and the pilot has not received any consistent information on when it is ok to leave. Apparently, weather is preventing us from flying but it would of made more sense to keep everyone in the building instead of having us sit on a plane for 2 hours. BWI do better!
