Three days before departure I had to change my outgoing reservation only with American. I phoned the 800 phone no. and opted to have them call me back within 1 hr. The agent ,Kim, did so on the same day @ about 1015 AM. Her tone was pleasant, professional and polite. There was change fees . The whole conversation lasted about 15 min. Never any major issues and lines are usually pretty short. One minor complaint is the security line. When lines are longer there is no advantage to go through priority access if you have to go to the back of the line once you make it through the agent. Should be someone directing traffic between the regular/priority lines right before scanners. Always seems like there are more than enough TSA agents to handle the infrequent surges. read more

This is the absolute worst airlines out there! Unfortunately I don't have a lot of choices when flying from AZ to MA or Virginia Beach. American Airlines offers nothing in the snack department! When I fly all the way across the US, a little bag of pretzels and a Diet Coke doesn't quite do the trick. The seats are extremely small and cramped. I'm not a big person; at 5'4", 117 pounds and I find the seats uncomfortable; imagine a 6'2 man of average weight? Plus, on my last flight October 2017- My carefully wrapped jar of jam was shattered upon my home arrival covering my clothes in a sticky mess. Booked a flight to Purto Plata and the time changed, I called to see if my boyfriends changed because I did not get an email for his. When I called the lady offered me a different flight, said to call back because I was unsure. I call back maybe 5 days later and the supervisor told me I can not change my flight because of policy. I was told two different things and they couldn't accommodate us because the lady came back from voluntary leave and was "unaware" of these changes. I consider myself a patient person, but today was too much. On 4/12/18 I received an e-mail from AA saying there's a possibility weather may impact my flight out of Chicago on 4/13/18. They offer to rebook at no cost. I'm a team player. Sure. So I reschedule my flight and leave five hours earlier. Not convenient for me, but it seemed like the appropriate thing to do. I get to the airport. I'm at the gate and they're asking for volunteers to have their baggage checked to save room in the cabin. Again, team player. Sure. So I let them check my bag (although I typically refuse to check any luggage - if I don't give it to anyone, I can't lose it). I fly from Chicago to Phoenix. At this point, I am supposed to have a two hour layover after which I catch my final flight from Phoenix to Tucson. I'm at the gate and see notification that the flight is delayed. I also hear agents at three separate gates talking about plane malfunctions/needing to check on maintenance/etc. So my departure has been moved from around 8pm to 10pm. Fine. Around 9pm, however, a notice pops up on my iPad informing me that my flight has been completely cancelled. I look at the gate agent, a young guy that looks somewhat terrified of the situation, and know he has no control over the situation. I went to speak with him about options when I over hear him tell other Tucson-bound passengers that there are a total of five seats available on flights tomorrow. Period. He starts handing out nifty cards with the customer service phone number. American Airlines hasn't been much help to me so far. I decided to rent a car and drive back to Tucson, return the car at the airport a couple hours after renting it, retrieve my car from the Tucson airport, and finally go home. Once I'm home, I call the customer service number to ask about a refund for the unused portion of my ticket. The customer service rep says she cancelled that portion of the trip (they had automatically rebooked me for a flight 24 hours later) and I just needed to go online and request a refund. I go online and go through the refund process. Except I keep getting a message saying I'm not eligible for a refund. And the only part of my trip visible is the first leg - the part that's completed. I put the locator number in and am unable to pull up the portion of the trip I couldn't take. I'm over it. This was absolutely ridiculous. This isn't how you keep customers. This is how you send your customers the clear message that they are absolutely NOT the priority to your organization. Good to know. read more

It would be impossible to exaggerate how awful American Airlines is. I had contacted the airline well before my flight to confirm that I could bring my bike wrapped up in protective foam instead of a box as it says on their website. Customer service confirmed this. I was told I needed to get back to Oklahoma because my Grandpa wasnt going to make it. I booked my flight and headed out. First stop was LAX, 1hour and 45 minute layover. This is where things go wrong for the rest of the trip. Some lady with her service dog, thinking she is privileged runs up to the gate barking orders and screaming that she and her service dog are to be loaded first. They called her name for a good 45 minutes with no show from her. The lady pushing her airport provided wheelchair was a saint and should be given every reward in the book. She didn't stop at the gate, she insisted that her seated be changed as she was stepping on the plane and threatened to turn everyone in to authorities holding the rest of us hostage to her tirade for 30 minutes or more. It did not end on the plane and she barked orders to stewardesses and passengers alike with them doing nothing but taking it. We get to Chicago where refuses to depart as someone has threatened to take her to the hospital, I got as far away as quickly as possible. Chicago to tulsa was a nightmare and not the last one unfortunately. Slightly turbulent ride as we flew next to a storm no big deal. A little girl had to pee at the start of the flight and the stewardess told the dad NO go sit down. The two adults that followed were told if it got bumpy she would lock them in the bathroom where they would have to stay "I'm not going to keep getting out of my jumpseat". Taking off from Tulsa, we were delayed, I get it, lightning storm. However...we land in Dallas, run like hell and miss the flight because they closed the gate already which was highly comical to the lady running the gate and we were told that we had to get new tickets at a different gate. Another rude lady at the gate, one of many making me thing it must be a terrible place to work with how hateful the people were, she tells us that's it's not their fault that we were delayed and missed our flight and were put on standby for the next day at 10, it was now 11 at night and they are not going to do anything to help. Let me tell you they need to change the airports to accommodate those that are stuck like we were. Some poor lady and her babies went into the baggage claim room and were not allowed to return to the airport portion because security had already closed so they suffered the entire night in the baggage claim room. I will never fly American airlines again, they made a horrible situation much worse! I have never met more rude, inconsiderate, thoughtless people in my life and I truly hope that everyone makes a complaint as to change their policies to make travel better for clients and staff alike. read more

Where to start. How about a 4+ hour delay, lack of communication between staff and customers, oh and lack of copilots? The first *few* times the flight was delayed, there wasn't an agent to help the exponentially growing line of people needing to change connecting flights. After about the tenth delay (2nd hour), we were finally allowed to board the plane. I'm not sure why we're allowed to board, because I saw our pilot speaking nonchalantly to a non-staff member about how he was surprised we were being boarded at all- because he didn't have a copilot! Shockingly enough, minutes after everyone was seated on the plane, the same pilot tells the customers we must immediately get off the plane, and then explained very rapidly how there wasn't adequate staffing and we wouldn't be able to take off for a few more hours. Oh, and don't expect any sort of constructive feedback when writing a complaint to customer relations. I'm fairly certain the response was computer generated. read more

I have had an American Airlines flight delayed for the past two Wednesdays. The delay means I am not able to make the connecting flight. The first Wednesday I rearranged the flight to this Wednesday. I finally decided to accept the fact that I was going to have to sit in airports for hours and get in very late. I am aware that safety is a concern. I don't want to fly on an unsafe aircraft. I have had the worst experience with this airline, especially at Tucson customer service. I had an issue checking in for my flight with the self checkout console, and when going to the customer service to checkout two ladies in particular were so rude and demeaning to me as a customer. They treated me like an idiot and rolled their eyes at me when I needed help, along with many other rude remarks, comments, and obvious whispers. Had the single worst leg of travel in my life flying from Guadalajara to Phoenix. Paid extra $62 for seats that said had priority boarding (we subsequently boarded last) and thus had to gate check our bags. Then the AC vents above our seats were inop the entire 2.5 hour flight so we sat their sweating and there were open seats in first class. I didn't bother asking the flight attendant's to relocate us as their attitude was pretty much "You're bugging us" when I told them the vents didn't work. After getting home I sent AA a refund request via their website for the seat upgrade and check bag fees (not the tickets) which they declined. Problems happen in business, it's unavoidable. Not owning up to issues and making it right is avoidable and American Airlines failed miserably in this respect. I vote with my wallet, I will not fly American unless there are no other options. read more

DCA to PHX. The gate agent announces that, the flight is full and therefore passengers with group 4 on the boarding ticket must check their carry-on bags as there will be no space in the overhead bin. I get flagged by the gate agent just before entering the gate to get on board because my bag is oversized. How could it be oversized when the same bag was NOT oversized from PHX to DCA? We both put my bag in one of those templates at the gate and voila, it fits perfectly. Then the agent says it must be checked because the flight is full. I point out to him that, I am in Group 2; only the Group 4 was required to check in. Agent says the situation changed. I check in the bag. While walking into the aircraft, I see whole bunch of overhead bin spaces that are empty. I ask the flight attendant why I was forced to surrender. Flight attendant passed the buck saying that I have to take that up with the gate agent. I deplane and go back to the gate agent to confront. The gate agent apologizes for the inconvenience but cannot retrieve my bag since it is checked in. The snide agent said I could fly tomorrow. Well, how can I? The bag is already checked, and flight the next day means I have to stay in a hotel without my bag. Not only the agent was snide but stupid. I took photographs of overhead bin as well as empty seats on the aircraft. The statement of "flight being fully booked" was a lie. Insufficient overhead bin space was also a lie. Upon arrival, I submitted my complaint to AA's website. By the way, their website does not allow uploading of photos for evidence. There is no phone number for person to person voice complaint. Their apologies do NOT un-ring the bell. I will do everything in my power never to fly AA again and persuade others fly another airline. read more

Had trouble flying out from Phoenix to Tucson. The cabin door wouldn't close. You would think that was something they would figure out prior to boarding everybody. So we had to change planes. And then they had extra people on the plane. And that took an additional 20 minutes. On the way home, but the girl said I could not bring my computer on. Even though I had flown previously with American twice. I had to put it in my suitcase. And then I have to check my suitcase. Paid for an upgrade to the main cabin on both legs of the flight home. Paid even more for and upgrade to first class on the second leg of the trip. Still had to pay a baggage fee for the checked bag for the first leg of the flight in the main cabin. Really AA? PS: for those of us at a tad under 6', or above, the main cabin is not "extra space". It's "barely space" when the seat in front of you is reclined. Note: Having two of the six kiosks out of service did not help this review rating, and oh by the way, those are some seriously slow kiosks that AA has tied themselves to. read more

I will have to have ZERO options before I fly this airline again. Made a mistake on the date when booking and didn't find out until I got the order confirmation the next day. The ticket was cheaper than their 200.00 per ticket change fee so I just basically threw 368.00 in the toilet on too of having to re buy the ticket. I paid a little more and went with Southwest. Very disappointed in all aspects. Our flight from Tucson to Dallas was good but once in Dallas everything went down hill. I totally understand that the airlines don't have any control over the weather but they do have control about flights and crew. So we arrived in Dallas around 9:30 am with a short layover. We were supposed to board at 1:30, only to be sent a text message that it was delayed for another hour, and delayed every hour after that. Then finally we receive the text message that we would be boarding at gate c (sorry forgot the#) but when we get there, we get the infamous text that there was a change and will be boarding from gate A. So all of us start heading to the new location and midway, we received yet another text message that the plane has arrived back at gate C. So here we go, not only the two of us but the entire passengers list. We arrived at the gate, we board the flight, we are now waiting to take off. Five minutes, ten minutes go by finally after 15 minutes, the crew announced that we are now waiting for the Captain to arrive. He's currently flying in from Texas. The pilot that we do have on board comes over the intercom to sadly informes us that his time has expired and will not be able to continue with the fight. WTF??? We are still waiting for the Captain to land. So, we are now on board waiting.....1.5 hours go by no word. Passengers start asking for water or snacks... Are you ready for this??...... They tell us that they do not have drinks/snacks for us and they are only allowed to serve those in first class (total of 12) vs 120 regular passengers. Now, everyone is getting upset. Flight crew is blowing air up our arse and giving passengers their BS stories and explanations. Now, we are at the 2 hour mark, passengers are getting upset, uncomfortable and we are just tired of having to deal with all the BS. Passengers wanted to get off the flight. Pilot comes over the intercom and states that the flight is being delayed until tomorrow. UGH!!! So here we go... Everyone's off the flight. Now we have to get back in line to get tickets for hotel accommodations and cab fare. They set us up at a hotel located on the other side of Dallas. There was so many other hotels along the way.... Why so far? So, we get to the hotel, only to stand in another FRKN line. American airlines you need to improve on your customer service and getting your Flight & Captain on the same schedule. We are not impressed. The saddest part of the story when you talk to airport stores they seem to already know that any horror stories begin with American Airlines. American Airline has awful customer service and terrible response time, if you ever receive any at all that is. (i'm still waiting for response and I've emailed and called it 34 times. Over the course of four weeks. AA charged me twice when I had to reschedule my return flight due to a medical issues. I have contacted them several times to try to resolve the issue. Initially, on 1/8, 1/9 via phone. At that time I was told the second accidental charge of $200 was already reversed & credited. However, on 1/9 I reviewed my credit card statement and it did not show up that I was credited. (Still doesn't). I called again & was told they needed me to email as the phone agents don't have access to any paid fees; that all they can see is that I was on/booked the flight. I promptly emailed but to date, have not heard back in email. 2 weeks later, I emailed again. No response. On 2/1/16, I FaceBook messaged them as it stated a response would be within 24-48 hrs. I did hear back & was told that "someone will look into the issue, and it could take some time, depending on how many other emails they received." As of 2/9/16, now a month since I was billed twice, there has still not been any correction. I was charged on 1/8- at the airport -$200. On 1/6, $181 when I called in to rebook. There is also an unexplained $25 on 1/6. All show up from AA on my credit card statement. I sent AA the reference number, a copy of my bank statement, the name of reps I've spoken to: I rebooked with (Grace White), the confirmation numbers. In addition, I've included since Jan., that my in flight experience was unacceptable. I requested in Jan.-a full refund for the flight- due to both issues: being overcharged and poor. No response ! Do they figure they can just keep your money? They have over 350 cases being investigated on them for just Jan 2016 with the Better Business Bureau. Terrible! read more

So when I order my tickets to go to Charlotte NC. to see my family for Christmas I planed it so i could leave after my shift from work on Dec. 23 and come back on Dec. 27 . Not only the flight attendant was not wearing her mask sitting behind us half the flight and moving people towards the front so they leave the last row empty for themselves, they didn't seem too concern when I informed AA about the situation. They also changed my airport last minute and didn't care. They changed flight times last min which forced me to switch my flight from SFO to San Jose due to those changes. they had me pay extra $378 to switch airports and the day of my flight they had issues and had to change my flight back to SFO (original ticket I had which I didn't have to pay extra) and refused to reimburse me the extra money they had me pay. I recently flew on AA1025 flight on Tuesday July 13, 2021 form Tucson, AZ to Springfield, Mo on a long anticipated golfing trip with my son. I redeemed my miles and booked a combined first class round ticket for my trip. The outbound leg was uneventful. Other than the extra space afforded by the ticket, there truly was no redeeming value in traveling first class; I miss the amenities of old. It took some doing to order a mimosa and we were only served an array of cookies during the flight. The return flight, AA 5348 was set to leave at 6:25 PM on Friday July 16, 2021. I called the call center on Thursday afternoon to see if an earlier flight back home was available and I was emphatically told that there were no seats available. We then presented to Springfield, Mo airport on Friday July 16th around 2:30 PM to be told that there were plenty of seats available on the 4:30 flight back to Tucson so I flew on standby to DFW on that flight. To my surprise,The flight was not full and I wondered why I could not have changed my flight the day before. I arrived at DFW and realized that I had a short connection to Tucson. I arrived at my gate and there was a large crowd a the gate. I approached the podium, 4th in line, and Agent Tola was screaming on the intercom for everyone to 'SIT DOWN'. Not sure as to why he was so unhinged, I approached the counter only for him to scream at me "I ALREADY MADE MY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR EVERYONE TO SIT DOWN". Confused, I told him that I just got here and have no idea what he's talking about. I continued to the podium and asked another agent for clarification. I told her that I had a first class standby ticket on the outbound flight to Tucson and simply wanted to know if I will make that flight or should I keep my original flight. She informed me that there was no way that I will get a first class seat on this flight; she did not even check my ticket. More confused, I asked her to just tell me if she even had me on her standby list. She huffed, looked over my ticket and said that she indeed had me on the list but only for coach. Not wanting to escalate the issue, I waited and she eventually assigned me a coach seat. I again inquired about a first class seat and she again said that it was not possible. I asked her if my original flight was an option and she scuffed and said that it was no longer available since I was flying standby on an earlier flight. We were eventually herded on board like cattle, masks be damned, only to have a coach traveler moved to first class at the last minute. So let me get this straight in summary. I could not rebook my flight a day earlier on seats that were actually available and I forfeited my miles and traveled standby coach and was treated like crap by Agent Tola who treated paying customers worst than people fleeing a communist country on the last available flight to civilization. That is not becoming of who we are and what American Airlines stand for. I have never been treated like cheap luggage as Agent Tola treated us. He has no place at his post and at best needs retraining and at worst needs another non-customer position. I DID NOT SEE SUCH A STRESSFUL SCENARIO THAT MERITED HIS RESPONSE. I paid $450 for a one way ticket from Newark to Tucson on 12\26. Unfortunately American A*sh***s decided to dump me and everyone else going to Az that night in Dallas for 20 hours. I'm sorry about the weather but you are a multi billion dollar company. Hire somebody to watch the weather channel and don't book flights you can't fulfil. The crews of the jets were given hotel rooms but the passengers got literally nothing not even food vouchers. Soooooooooo. The app and the website have shown all flights to be on time for the last two hours. This, they cannot update?? The female counter person needs plenty of training in empathy and overall savvy in handling these situations. American. I haven't flown u often, but your on-time reliability is horrid in my case. Worse Airline ever! My parents flight was cancelled from Bakersfield to Tucson yesterday because of maintenance. Just to get them here in time for my wedding I had to put them on a shuttle to LA for a late nigh flight on Southwest Airlines. Thankfully they made that flight and got into Tucson only 2 hours after their intended arrival. Had it not been for the wonderful staff at Southwest Airlines getting them on a last minute flight, they would have never made it. I rebooked on an earlier flight, and when the kiosk told me to pay again for my checked bag when I printed my bag tag, I did. Because I just wanted to go home and see my family after a long week. When I got up to the counter and asked the woman about it, the American Airlines agent sighed loudly and told me I paid for priority boarding and not a checked bag. I showed her my receipt on my phone that clearly showed it was for baggage, and then she told me it was my fault for paying twice. WHAT?!?! Your company is at fault charging people twice, lady. American apparently swindles people $30 at a time and hopes they don't notice. Not to mention the issue of paying for priority boarding was the first thing she mentioned, American Airlines uses deceptive tactics. Very disappointing. read more

HORRIBLE!!!! absolutely horrible. NEVER FLYING AMERICAN AIRLINES AGAIN. I came one minute after the call time to my flight to attend my uncles funeral back and mind you ONE minute after I was unable to get on the plane, in which I could see right in front of me. They gave up my spot to someone random. Did not allow me to catch my flight. As I read on my ticket departure was at 6:55, and I SHOULD HAVE STILL BEEN ABLE TO GET ON MY FLIGHT. The female was absolutely no help what so ever. She was rude, short, and brushed off ALL of my questions. She was catty, and I could hear her speaking about me to her other female coworker. She did not help me at all. She made my experience at American Airlines HORRIBLE. Again, I could see the plane right in front of me and she would not allow me to board. She goes by the name JEANINE. JEANINE gave HORRIBLE customer service, and did not help me at all. She continuously said I couldn't get on the plane, and did not help me in any other way. We booked our vacation with Expedia. We were unable to get our seats assigned. We attempted to get seat assignments 24 hours ahead of our trip as directed. I am at the airport in Phoenix and I still don't have seats assigned for myself, my husband, my 14 year old son and my nine year old daughter. Some passengers were able to see the seats available on-line, while myself and another family were not. The gate agent said we should have paid extra for the $90 seats to avoid this problem. This is a racket and American Airlines should be ashamed of themselves for trying to collect $400 more dollars from my family when we already paid for our trip. I am a frequent flyer with American.....after my next two trips for work I will NEVER book with American Airlines again. SOUTHWEST AIRLINES rocks!!! read more

The people were incredibly rude and talked to us like we were children. They told a man who had 15 minutes to get to his gate that there was no way he would make and held him up for at least another 3 minutes arguing with him. Worst customer service I've ever seen. I believe a monkey could have been more polite and helpful than their staff were. read more
