Nestled inside of a small gallery featuring various art from local artists is the Artisans Eatery. The menu is mostly soups, sandwiches, and salads. The sandwiches are made on a sourdough and come with a side of your choice. I enjoyed the grilled cheese with avocado and home made chips. The service was prompt and everyone was very friendly and kind. The tables were clean. My only recommendation would be to offer perhaps one more vegetarian friendly option. Very cute local restaurant! We stopped here while doing a scenic fall drive in the area. I had the "Big Cheese" with bacon and my husband had the "Funky Chicken". This place was a great surprise! We were just visiting from Talihina and thought we would pop in for a quick bite to eat. We had no idea what to expect when we walked in. I could not make up my mind on which sandwich to order, they all sounded so good. I finally settled on the Southwest Chicken sandwich with a side of tomato bisque soup. I had no idea a sandwich could be this good. The bread was toasted the chicken and bacon and all the goodness in this sandwich made me a very happy person. The soup was phenomenal. A glorious sandwich of Pulled Pork, smoked ham & bacon with provolone, chipotle aioli, & maple Dijon on a toasted ciabatta. Deeelish! Reminded me of another epic pork sandwich I had in Seattle called the little squealer. For the side, I upped to the potato leek soup and it was on point. Textures, flavors and temps were spot on. I came here with some friends during lunch and I can say that it was a pleasant experience with only one solid hiccup. First off, the atmosphere was welcoming with the staff being enjoyable despite being moderately busy. Additionally (and most importantly), the food was quite pleasing. 4 of the 5 of us (myself included) would come back for the same sandwich. The real hold up for me was the fact that staff came and seemingly rushed us off when we were finishing our plates and essentially killed our social time. I would understand if every table was full or if they were about to close - however, these were not the case. I should say that this was not done in the welcoming manner encouraging us to stay and visit (despite the fact that we bought cookies after they took our plates). Would I recommend? Not many places are open on weekends at this town and I sure am glad that this place is. I'm normally not a big sandwich person but boy oh boy these grilled sammies are one of the best in the world. Hubby had the Sooie Pig, the maple Dijon mustard really adds the winning touch on that already yummy grilled ham and Swiss sandwich. I had the wild cat and the grilled chilies is such a brilliant idea on a sandwich. The people are extremely nice and the whole gallery+store has such a refreshing and upbeat ambience. The spotless bathroom put your own bathroom back home to shame. Sad thing is they only open Wednesday - Saturday, I might have to find another day to come and try something else! read more

My grandmother used to have a cabin outside town in an area called Potter's Junction. (I have very fond childhood memories of Mena. I'd best stop talking now before I get all weepy.) We stopped here on our last trip to Polk County, and were pleasantly surprised by American Artisans. Hubby had (and raved about!) the tomato bisque, and I loved my portobello sandwich. The name of this restaurant gives a clue: "American Artisans". You may have walked in the door seeking food, and what greets you instead? A fine collection of pottery, wooden puzzles, paintings, wind chimes, jewelry, and other handmade items. But wait, you wanted food? Keep walking. Towards the back of the room you spot a sign, "Order Here". Which, it turns out, is a VERY good idea. My wife and were on our way to Dallas and ordered the following: the Portobello sandwich, a Santa Fe salad, an Artisan salad, and a cup of Tomato Bisque soup. The verdict? EVERY one of those items was top notch. Not only did the sandwich and the salads consist of a creative blend of items, the items used were top shelf. Iceburg lettuce? Nope. Delicious assorted salad greens. American cheese? Nope. Colby Jack on one and Goat Cheese on the other. One salad also had roasted corn and black beans, while the other salad had toasted pine nuts, and both salads also had alfalfa sprouts. And the sandwich? Lovely thick slices of Portobello mushroom, with a tasty blend of basil-flavored mayonaise, pickled red onions, Provolone cheese, all on a nicely grilled bun. Yes, you will pay a bit more for their sandwiches than you would at one of the national sandwich chain shops. And yes, you can find less expensive salads at other restaurants. But not with the ingredients that American Artisans uses. No styrofoam plates here. Instead, very attractive solid plates. And after placing your order, it is served up within mere minutes, and is brought to your table by a very pleasant server. Mena has lots of chain restaurants. It has only ONE restaurant like this one, and American Artisans isn't open every day, But if you are passing through this town on a day when it is open, do yourself a favor and be sure to enjoy their lovely food. Wow! We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in today for a late lunch. This was an art exhibit and displayed beautifully.
