I have been a customer for years. I have stuck with them despite the fact that they have raised their rates several times during the pandemic citing various reasons. I have a contract with them for two collections a week. I just received a letter fro them telling me that they are reducing my collections to once a week. I get great service from the company. However, during the last 8 months up to now (01DEC2022), I have been getting the neighbor's trash bin in front of my home. During one event, the trash bin was picked up from the road and ended up in my garage. I have a daughter who had cancer and I need to keep the trash bins sanitized. I've sent notes via their website contacting customer service, and I even asked for help from our HOA. I even talked to the driver. After months of reaching out to upper management and having continued problems with no resolution, I feel forced to leave this review. Not only have the employees dumped trash in front of my home and left it, they have damaged my neighbors property, my property and deliberately block my driveway with discarded trash cans as a result of me calling. I literally watched as the Yard Waste truck sped by in-front of my house skipping it all together. Being that my yard waste had been skipped for 3 weeks in a row with no reply from this company after emailing them, I proceeded to get in my car and track the disposal driver down. I told him he skipped my house. His response was, I forgot. This is unacceptable for a service we pay for! This morning the same issue occurred, I watched as the recycling truck skipped my house with my Blue Recycling Bin that clearly says American Disposal Fairfax on the side placed at the curb of my house as it always has been placed for the past year. The truck driver did not even stop to acknowledge the bin. This time, instead of driving after the truck because it was raining, I immediately called 703-368-0500 and was told that they would radio the truck to come back to my house to pick up the recycling. Calling customer service to cancel their service took over an hour (I was called #63) - and they wouldn't refund me a charge they made on my card in early August to cover service for the next 3 months (even though they've never picked up trash during the entire month of August). We had American Disposal for trash and recycling services for several years. During COVID, they began struggling and reduced service to once a week and then began missing pickups. The phone representatives were great. We sold our home and I called American to pick up on Feb 16. We are still waiting for them to pick up and they wind issue anyway refunds until they pick up. Interestingly at our new place, American came and picked up previous bins in one day. Oh and the new trash company goes 2x per week. read more

If you like paying for a service you don't receive, for weeks, and then on top of that receive notice that you'll soon start to pay more for the thing you're not getting, then American Disposal is the company for you! Consistent issues with little to no communication. Over the last year, the number of missed pick-ups has continued to increase. Our 6/6/2022 pick-up was missed. It was 2 business days before anyone replied to the missed pick-up request on the website...they said keep the can out and it would be picked up asap. But trash pick-up was the next day! As others have said, most of the cans on our street will be pulled in by mid-afternoon while ours is still full and has been skippd. We're on a very visible spot on our street with nothing to obstruct the view of the bins and still they're missed. Additionally, the drivers consistently put the cans back down right in front of the mailbox, which often results in the mail carrier leaving notes in our box that they cannot easily get to it. We've gotten little rectification with customer service and no indication as to if/when/how the company intends to improve their service. It's time to switch and we will be going with Republic. read more

As a customer of American, all I can say is that they aren't consistently reliable in the least little way. I have grown to usually expect at least on pick up a month is missed. My trash and recycle has been out at the curb for a solid week. The truck last Tuesday slowed down looked at them and proceeded down the street. I end up wasting time to call and report missed situations. The staff answering phones are usually nice, once you get through and PROMISE to rectify the situation. This is not the case. I can't rely on anything from American but getting a bill on time. Until I can make other arrangements I am not going to pay my bill and if push comes to shove I will go to dump myself. Since I am unable to give zero stars, I'm giving one star. These people picked up my recycling bin and emptied it into the regular trash pick up truck. They have left the trash bins in the road where they have been damaged by vehicles hitting them - yet I am supposed to pay for bins that are damaged. They frequently do not come on the day they are supposed to but offer no advance notice of date changes. They are totally unresponsive and have complete disregard for the community they work in. It's hard to understand how they have "Services" in their name. They frequently miss pickups and do not come when they promise. Their people on the trucks work very hard, and I suspect that management is too cheap to hire enough employees and buy enough trucks to do the job reliably. Although I paid an extra $20.00 for them to pick up an old twin mattress, they failed to show up on the scheduled day, and it's still in front of my house days and phone calls later. ADS has regularly been late picking up trash for my community. ADS skipped my pickup on Monday 9/5/22. I called and they said they would send another truck. At the same time I scheduled a bulk pick up for Thursday 9/8/22 for a mattress, boxspring, and a tv stand. No truck came back on Monday or Tuesday, and no bulk pickup on Thursday. I called again on Friday to complain about the missed bulk pickup and was told they would send another truck, but no second truck had arrived as of 12 midnight. I'm not sure what the problem is, but this is ridiculous! I called on Monday and scheduled another bulk pickup. Despite having confirmed the second scheduled bulk pickup for this past Thursday, no pickup occurred. I called on Friday and spoke to Dana, who assured me that the pickup would occur on Friday and promised to call me back to confirm. No callback and no pickup on Friday. On Saturday, after trying to get this picked up for TWO WEEKS, I borrowed a friend's vehicle with roof rails, bought tie down straps and made two trips to Covanta to dispose of the items myself. ADS is in gross breach of contract with our HOA and should be sent a show cause notice for breach and then have their contract immediately terminated for cause. May be the worst service of any company I've ever dealt with. And I am not alone. My neighbors universally feel the same way. I plan on cancelling contract via certified mail as soon as possibile. It's with sadness that we are ending our 10 year journey as an American Disposal customer. The shift to pick up once a week is a challenge, but on top of the they missed two weeks of pickup in our culdesac. We called multiple times (at least seven times in two weeks). We were promised they'd pick up and they still missed us. Yesterday the driver literally picked up the corner house and skipped the rest of houses on our street, in spite of the fact that we called multiple times. Very disappointing. No yard waste pickup in over two weeks now (12-10-21), so I finally called American, and (surprise!) someone actually answered the phone. She claimed to be quite surprised to hear that they had not done our neighborhood leaf bag pickup in weeks, despite the fact that American's own truck crews had done our trash and recycables pickup (although those too had been delayed, of course). I would have quit them many, many times over the last few years, but everyone says the only other real choice that serves our neighborhood in Annandale -- Republic -- is just as bad. However, they seem to be doing a better job lately, so I guess we will finally cancel American after giving them so many chances to improve service. American is owned by a huge corporate conglomerate that, when I checked last year, had something like $1 billion in annual profits. It needs to invest some of that in more modern trucks and better pay for their workers. Ultimately, I blame Fairfax County for allowing this problem to fester and never get resolved. Trash disposal should be a public utility; if private enterprise cannot do it properly, the county shoulkdm take over the job. But the county makes it extremely hard to switch over to county trash service (some areas do have the county do it). This needs to change. read more

[3 Month Update] It took American Disposal two months to pick up the trash and recycling containers at the curb outside our home. During that period, they charged me $200 for not returning containers. In addition, they charged for services even after I cancelled. Have called numerous times to get this resolved but I am unable to get through due to too many other callers -- the line just hangs up. What a joke of a company! Avoid at all costs. read more

One week they miss my recycling, day they'll pick up on another day, then miss that day, then pick up next week. I call customer service and they really have no idea what is happening on the ground. I like don't recommend American Trash Deposal Service, they have cut back their trash pick up days to once a week and they did not reduce their price. We pay $130.00 while other companies charge $90.00 per month and come twice a week. What a rip off! read more

Oh AND they charged my card twice!!! And when you call for customer service, what happens? You get an automated response upon which the machine tells you they have too many phone calls and automatically hangs up. American is the WORST trash company in all of VA! In October all of Fairfax county went to one day a week of trash pick up and it is like American just said F*** it when we do pick it up we will just throw the cans anywhere and actually actively TRY to lose the contract with various HOAs. In the 16 years I have lived in Fairfax County in my present house it has NEVER been this bad.  In just the month since they started just picking up trash one day a week, my can has disappeared twice, been halfway across the development, LITERALLY IN an neighbors yard...smack dab in the MIDDLE of the yard, which takes some doing rather than just shoving it back against the curb. Today I came home to find another can in place of mine while mine is nowhere to be found AGAIN.   I watched my ring doorbell from this AM's trash pick-up and while my camera did NOT pick up who took my can, IT DID pick up something odd. I watched as an American Disposal worker dragged a can from an ENTIRELY different street almost out of my camera's view ALL the way to the back corner of my street, almost completely out of view on that side of my camera.   When he started walking with it, he was moving fast but when a car came up behind him, he started running, almost like he was hiding the can and got caught. Now I don't want to accuse someone of something, but it is very strange that he would take a can from one side of another court and appear to hide it on the back side of another street. NO he wasn't just moving it to catch up with the truck as it had already serviced my street and I watched the truck go up to the next street over, NOWHERE near where he took the can. Why all of a sudden are cans disappearing, being taken by other residents, American workers placing cans in areas NOWHERE near the house that they belong to, etc.  And when you try to call ADS they have 37 callers ahead of you waiting on the phone.  I figure I will call them on my day off and just let the phone be on hold all day! Avoid this company at all costs. They have not picked up my trash or recycling for over 3 weeks now, despite having a contract. It's completely disgusting now and is causing a health hazard. Maggots are now lining my trash cans. I have called, e-mailed, filed missed pickup reports on the website, and still no pickup. In the last month we have only had 2 trash pickups. The two letters they sent us talked about a CBS news report on trucking industry...blah blah blah. I call every time they don't pick up and get the same story about driver shortages, training being done, late day and Saturday pickups for those they miss and promises of pickup within 24-48 hours which never happens. They promise and we expect them to fulfill their obligations but still no pickups. Its getting to be a sanitation and health issue with bags of trash sitting along side the containers being torn into by animals and crows with trashy laying all over the place. We keep our overflow in the garage to avoid this but others do not. AND....when I call I have to wait on hold 20-40 minutes to speak to someone and emails to them go unanswered. The letters they sent said that they would email us when there was to be a delay but we never get those emails. Got one but it was about recycling delay and we don't recycle with them. We take care of our own recycling at nearby commuter lot. JUST WANT OUR TRASH PICKED UP. They keep saying they will credit us. That is nice BUT it doesn't solve the problem of no pickup week after week after week. The county can't do anything about it as its all private companies. I see many negative reports saying the same thing I am saying. At our wits end. The company we had before turned us over to ADS last year when they started only picking up for HOAs. 14 May 2019 My Critique: For circa the past 5 weeks, we've had no trash pick-ups! They send emails stating that due to circumstances beyond their control, trash pick-up will be delayed until Saturday, (instead of the usual Wednesday in my vicinage south of McLean proper). This has been going on for 4 or 5 weeks. I tried phoning them several times only to be put on hold with an announced waiting time of 1 hour---if I correctly heard the audibly-indistinct recording stating 60 minutes. I also emailed them; they responded with a text message with approximately the same statement as in their emails. There is an article in the latest Sun-Gazette issue regarding this matter of trash pick-up in Fairfax County. I now am searching for another company for refuse pick-up with the fewest of negative critiques---the lesser of evils. read more

They continue to raise prices (which I can understand in todays labor market), but they also reduce the service offering at the same time (e.g., they removed glass recycling as a service while raising prices). On top of that, they consistently miss pickups, leave empty trash cans in the middle of the driveway (blocking exit), and knock over trash and leave it littered in the street.
