Due to various circumstances, I found myself needing a bridesmaid dress altered within a week. I called American Freestyle to inquire about availability, and Svetlana just told me not to worry and to come by the shop whenever I could. Wonderful experience. Brought in a standard hem job for new dress pants, plus more complex repair work on a jacket (holes in elbows) and jeans (hole in rear right pocket). I had a backless wedding dress that needed to be taken in at two very tricky locations, in addition to having the straps shortened and a bustle put in. Svetlana is a magician. Stay away from this place. I brought 3 pairs of pants last summer for hemming, a month ahead of a trip to NYC for my birthday. I was told all 3 could be done in 10 days which is oddly long for just hemming. But whatever, came in on Day 12. Not done and they asked me to come back the following weekend. Fine. I came back and it was still not done and again asked me to come back in a few days. The third time I came back they said it was done but they could not find it and they asked me to go find my pants myself from the rack! Let me remind you, this is for hemming only. I have been going to this tailor shop for almost 2 years and it's been a great experience every time. The ladies Faina and Svetlana are super friendly and skilled. Their speciality is bridal gown & wedding dress alterations but I've had suits and dress pants fitted & hemmed, coat fitted, pockets sown in, darts put on dress shirts etc. So happy that I don't have to worry about my size being out of stock when shopping since I know the ladies would do their magic to make them fit even better. I came in to see if they could fix or replace the zipper - they fixed it on the spot and charged me a very reasonable price for the work (saved me a lot of money otherwise spent on a new jacket or getting the whole zipper replaced). I brought my wedding dress and a reception dress to be altered for my wedding. Maybe I'd have a better experience with Svetlana I don't know, but I had a terrible experience with Anna. Firstly Anna couldn't finish the alterations in time, and pushed back the pick up date twice to ONE DAY before I was supposed to fly out for my wedding. I remember reading a review on Yelp about how Anna lost a bridesmaid dress a day before the customer had to attend a wedding so I really didn't want to risk the same situation happening a day before I'm set to leave. I was supposed to have 3 things done to my wedding dress 1) take the bust in 2) bring up the waist 3) shorten the dress hem, and 2) was very time-consuming according to Anna and she hadn't started on either of the 3 things on the original day I was supposed to pick up the dress. In order to get the altered dress ASAP, I told Anna to just finish 1) and 3) and I'll hide the waist portion myself with a belt. Secondly, the reception dress did not fit. She just took in the waist and left the armholes way too big. Also, you can tell very clearly that one of bust dart was taken in hurriedly and the alteration stuck out like a sore thumb. There goes my elegant look. Future brides, please beware. You really don't need extra stress added to your big day. read more

First of all, I would like to say that Svetlana and Anna are both very sweet ladies. The problem is that they have clearly over extended themselves and were unable to deliver their work on time. They were very apologetic. However, they need to know how to manage their time and I would hate for someone else to have to go through what I went through.The dress was "ready" just THREE days before my wedding. This place is the top recommendation from BHDLN/Anthropologie for wedding dress alterations and it had a lot of great reviews on yelp, which I took as a good sign. My dress was at least two sizes too big for me, with a lot of lace work, which Anna said she could handle. My wedding was on 8/10 and I brought my dress to her in early June. I got fitted on 6/9, at which point she increased her initial bid by over $100. Based on my wedding date of 8/10, she wanted me to come in on 7/28 for a final fitting. I was uncomfortable with how close it was to my wedding but trusted her experience (big mistake!). I called her the day before the fitting and she told me the dress was ready for the fitting. When I got there, almost nothing was done. The zipper wasn't even attached, straps and hem were just pinned (from my fitting almost 2 months earlier), no bustle, the chest was fitted well above my boobs, and she forgot about the cups even though they were in the bag with the dress. She promised that the dress would be done by 8/2! I called on 8/1 to remind her I was coming in and she asked me to come in later in the day (6:00pm). On my way to the shop on 8/2, she called me and asked if I could come in after 8pm. When I got there, there were at least 6 other brides in the shop and multiple people asking for their dresses and I kept hearing that they weren't ready. When I saw my dress, NOTHING had changed since the last time I was there. Instead of being apologetic, she just made excuses about the original construction of the dress. I asked if I could come in on 8/4 and she said she need more time to finish the dress.... She said 8/7, just 3 days away from my wedding date. I agreed, not knowing what to do but called back the next day and asked Anna if I could have it on 8/6. She told me she had my pick up date down as 8/10 and I reminded her that that was my wedding date, not my pick up date. She agreed to have it on Monday by 6pm. Unfortunately, it was not done when I called her on Monday. She, again, said that she had 8/10 written down as pick up. I reminded her that 8/10 was my wedding day and that she told me my dress would be ready today (8/6). She claimed that it was done but that it needed to get pressed. She wanted me to come late that night and I couldn't so I told her I would come the next morning. She didn't like that but agreed to 11am. She promised it was done. I showed up the next morning with a bridesmaid. Again, she said she had me down for 8/10, my wedding date. She was working on someone else's dress. I told her I needed to see it. She had done NOTHING. No part of the dress was finished. My bridesmaid explained that this wasn't okay. It was 3 days before my wedding and nothing was done. We didn't have time to come back a different day. She asked us to come back a 3pm. We ran errands and came back at 4pm. Changes had been made but it was still nowhere near done. We talked through what still needed to be fixed, and she told us to come back at 10pm!! We did. At that point, my bridesmaid, who does some sewing, had to talk her through finishing about 5 more things that she had forgotten. Anna would argue with us or make excuses. Eventually, she finished most of it. At this point we had been at it for 12 hours and we said "good enough" which is never something you want to say about your wedding dress. The hem was done poorly, parts of the lace were frayed, pearls were falling off, and it bunched at my midsection because it was a little too tight but I couldn't stay there any longer and I couldn't come back. My bridesmaid said she would finish what wasn't right and we paid Anna and left. I was in tears, this was THE MOST stressful and worst experience. Again, I would say that Anna is sweet and I hate to leave such a negative review. However, she can't run a business this way. I would hate for anyone else to deal with this level of stress leading up to their wedding. I would never recommend this shop. read more

I have no idea why it was going to be so much more considering the second seamstress ended up doing the same amount of work. I can't thank Svetlana enough. My wedding dress was such a heavy, complicated, and detailed dress. It had so much beading work and delicate lace that many seamstresses would not touch it or would charge so much for their labor and work. When I came to Svetlana, she was already booked to alter so many other wedding dresses, but she made room for me because she's just so sweet like that. After searching for food and other wonderful things on Yelp for years and only posing to be a "Yelper"... I've finally made an account! Just because of this place. (And Svetlana, of course!) After receiving a pair of Japanese selvedge denim that I've been waiting months to get a hold of (Flat Head Balder, for you fellow denimheads out there!), I was seriously so sad to find that the fit was just not what I had expected. Instead of the slimmer, narrower cut that I was looking for, it was more of straight leg, which really did not look good on me... trust. Before this pair, I used to do all of my tapering on my denim with my own good ol' needle and thread, but this was not as easy to do for my new pair because of the 14.5oz raw unsanforized selvedge denim they were constructed from (think of cardboardy-canvas). I tried doing it on my own... I mean, who doesn't like saving money?? But my needle literally bent in half. Before stumbling upon American Freestyle Alterations, I searched online and found many other alteration places, looking specifically at the ones that specialized in denim alterations (since the machines that they use to taper are tuned and calibrated to sew denim), but the prices just weren't appealing to me. I mean, I did spent $300 on my new jeans, but I wasn't down to spend close to another $100 just to get them a little tapered..... Finally, after reading almost all of the reviews for American Freestyle Alterations, I was convinced. If I take my beloved pair of jeans to this place, they will, without a doubt, be in good, if not amazing, hands. And boy, was I right... Upon stepping into the small shop, I was greeted by an elderly lady named Svetlana. I brought out my jeans from my bag, told her what I was looking for, and asked if she could do it for me. Having taken down my measurements on my own, prior to coming (no worries, this isn't necessary!), I told her that I wanted 1 1/4 inches brought from the knee and gradually have it brought in 2 inches by the leg opening. She marked the measurements on my jeans, placed safety pins along the marking, and had me try them on to make sure everything was okay. With everything good to go, she explained to me what she was going to do and how she was going to do it, briefly taking me step by step through the procedure and making me feel so assured that I made a great decision to leave her with my jeans. She told me that they would be ready in about a week and left me with a ticket and the price for the tapering, $45, which was extremely reasonable for me, considering the difficulty of working on heavier weight denim and the price quotes of other places. A week later, I got a call that they were ready and was just SO eager to pick up my (not new, but) improved jeans. Back in the shop, I greeted Svetlana and she handed me my newly altered jeans. In the fitting room, where I was just so excited to try them on, anticipating a perfect fit, my heart sank a little... The right leg of my jeans fit perfectly! Just the way I wanted them to. However, the left leg... let's just say it was a total struggle to get it past my calf. As I walked out of the fitting room, I told Svetlana what happened, and a look of disappointment and frustration appeared on her face. She told me that she had another person work on the left leg on my jeans since she was so swamped with everything else that she needed to work on. She told me about her frustration with the other seamstress and told me not to worry. She will take them and work on them herself. When I went to go pick my jeans up, for hopefully the last time, she greeted me again and handed me my jeans. The stitching job, alone, was impeccable. Looked just as they did originally! And the fit? Now they were fitting like they were MADE for me! (Who doesn't love that feelinggg?) I asked her if I could pay her, even just a little for the extra work she did for them, but as she gave me hug, she simply told me not to even worry about it and to "just enjoy life." (And write a review for her on Yelp. Which I am doing :) lol) This woman really is not only the sweetest, but also the most incredible seamstress I've ever met. The kind of work she does and variety of clothing she can work on seems endless! If you don't believe me, and take your clothes elsewhere...Well. My experience was bad in terms of customer service and quality of work. Svetlana did very poor quality work on my wedding dress. I pointed out the issues I wanted her to fix and she tried to talk her way out of them. I got bra cups sewn in to my wedding gown and she messed them up twice--so that the cup was showing--refused to fix them, and I ended up having to sew them in myself mere days before the wedding. She may have been good at one point, but she over books, provides terrible customer service--I had to change clothes in a sketchy back hall that is shared with other businesses--and she looks for any excuse to over charge her clients. This was by far my worst wedding vendor (over priced, poor quality work, terrible customer service). Do not take your wedding dress here! read more

I cannot say enough about both the customer service, or the quality of the work that Svetlana and team does here. We brought in a vintage letterman's jacket that two other alterations places turned us away for. We thought we'd give it one last try, expected to be told it was impossible. My husband told Svetlana how much it would mean to him to be able to wear this jacket, but that it was about two inches two short around the bottom. At first, she politely declined, not wanting to risk the jacket. Completely understandable, so we thanked her for her time. When she saw the disappointment on my husband's face, she sweetly offered to have us leave the jacket so she could look into what she could do. She also assured us she wouldn't do any work unless she was certain it wouldn't ruin the jacket. We got a call less than a week later to come pick up the jacket. I have finally found my Seattle tailor! I went in about five minutes before they were scheduled to close with a couple of suit pants to be hemmed. Svetlana could not have been more welcoming or more professional. She truly takes pride in her work. I asked her opinion on the jacket sleeves, and even though she could have made more money by recommending that we shorten them by an eight of an inch, she said they were perfectly fine a is. I also joked that I was losing weight, and the suit hopefully wouldn't fit me any more in a couple of months and she said that if I did and wanted to have it taken in, she would give me a discount. I had never gotten anything tailored before, but needed some dress pants hemmed and the sleeves shortened on a blazer. In less than 15 minutes, I had was given a reasonable quote, a time and date for pick up (ready in a week), and ample reassurance that the job would be done well. The sleeves were shortened enough to need a button removed and you can't even tell. The pants were hemmed beautifully. As soon as I read the reviews for American Freestyle Alterations, I immediately scheduled an appointment to have my wedding dress fitted and altered. Svetlana was an absolute godsend. I had a lot of work that needed to be done to combine a lace dress and tulle skirt into my wedding gown. Besides carefully fitting the dress, Svetlana meticulously pinned the layers of tulle to hem the skirt to the right length. She was fantastic to work with me to fit all of the alterations I needed into the price range that I had budgeted for. I told Svetlana I was in no rush to pick up the dress and to just let me know when it was ready, yet the turn around time was till quicker than I expected. When I went in for what we thought would be a second fitting, everything fit perfectly. Svetlana had replaced the exposed zipper on the dress with a hidden zipper, fitted both the bodice, body, and sleeves of the dress, shortened the sleeves (sewing back on a delicate lace trim), added a lining to the sleeves, took in the waste of the skirt, and hemmed all four layers of the skirt. Everything fit perfectly and it looked absolutely beautiful. I cannot imagine anywhere else providing such a high level of customer service. I detest small talk and prefer to just get right down to business when it comes to any sort of transaction, but Svetlana is literally the sweetest person I have ever encountered in my life, and I enjoyed chatting with her. From the second I walked in the door, she made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. I brought my wedding dress in to be hemmed (no other alterations) and she had it done in about a week and a half. It was exactly what I had asked for and inexpensive.
