As soon as I read the reviews for American Freestyle Alterations, I immediately scheduled an appointment to have my wedding dress fitted and altered. Svetlana was an absolute godsend. I had a lot of work that needed to be done to combine a lace dress and tulle skirt into my wedding gown. Besides carefully fitting the dress, Svetlana meticulously pinned the layers of tulle to hem the skirt to the right length. She was fantastic to work with me to fit all of the alterations I needed into the price range that I had budgeted for. I told Svetlana I was in no rush to pick up the dress and to just let me know when it was ready, yet the turn around time was till quicker than I expected. When I went in for what we thought would be a second fitting, everything fit perfectly. Svetlana had replaced the exposed zipper on the dress with a hidden zipper, fitted both the bodice, body, and sleeves of the dress, shortened the sleeves (sewing back on a delicate lace trim), added a lining to the sleeves, took in the waste of the skirt, and hemmed all four layers of the skirt. Everything fit perfectly and it looked absolutely beautiful. I cannot imagine anywhere else providing such a high level of customer service. Svetlana is extremely talented and incredibly kind hearted. Whether the alteration you need is detailed or simple, I highly recommend Svetlana. read more

I detest small talk and prefer to just get right down to business when it comes to any sort of transaction, but Svetlana is literally the sweetest person I have ever encountered in my life, and I enjoyed chatting with her. From the second I walked in the door, she made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. I brought my wedding dress in to be hemmed (no other alterations) and she had it done in about a week and a half. It was exactly what I had asked for and inexpensive. The shop is VERY uncomfortably cramped, but aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. If I still lived in Seattle, I'd definitely be bringing them more clothes to alter. read more

This place is absolutely wonderful! After hurricane sandy, I arrived in seattle two days later than planned and barely had time to have major alterations done to my bridesmaid dress. Svetlana took such good care of me, and she was able to do alterations literally overnight! I literally didn't have time to try on the dress until the photographer arrived, but it fit beautifully! The customer service I experienced fantastic... she truly cared about me, even to go as far as making a follow up call the day of the wedding to make sure everything fit well! She told me she would make time to do any further alterations if need be. I am so thankful, and it was all reasonably charged as well! she made wonderful suggestions, and is very skilled and experienced, as well as friendly and professional. I can't say enough good things about Svetlana. She is amazingly detail oriented and takes her time, without being slow. When I got my pants hemmed there recently she made sure that I was wearing my belt and that the pants were where they would normally sit. She also double checked that I was wearing the shoes I would normally be wearing with the pants. On every pair of pants she made absolutely sure the hem was exactly where I wanted it and showed me a few different options. When I picked everything up they were perfect. I'm very pleased. Svetlana worked absolute magic on my wedding gown (which I had ordered custom, site-unseen from China for $100!). The gown was gorgeous when it arrived, but didn't fit at all well in the bust, had a crooked and strange train and had ugly lace on the back. I brought the gown to Svetlana and she ooohed and aaahed over it, making me feel like a princess and making the experience a blast. She gracefully pinned and tucked very quickly and was incredibly thoughtful about how to swap out the lace in the back. Svetlana took no chances with the small piece of replacement lace I brought her and deliberated over the best way to do it for a while, ultimately choosing a perfect way to swap out ugly for beautiful. When I came back for the altered dress, it was completed on time, fit way better than my expectations and was done for a great price. Driving to American Freestyle Alterations is in no way convenient for me, but since this experience, I always go back to Svetlana - I love her! read more

My wedding planner recommended Svetlana to me for alterations to my wedding gown and I was not at all disappointed! I loved how Svetlana calls all the girls "princesses" and her crew of male family members were quite entertaining to boot. They offered me some home-cured meats while I stood for a long period to be measured for my layers upon layers of tulle to be shortened, as well as readjusted the fan to point at me so cool off in the Seattle June heat. All of my tulle layers were perfectly even; I also had the top of the dress taken in and it fit perfectly. Svetlana also had to design a bustle for my very large train. This place is great! Brought two cheap suit jackets into the store and they hooked it up! I had the back of the jackets taken in and the sleeves shortened. The tailor took his time and made sure I liked everything he did to the jacket as a tailor should. They were also able to finish my jackets in two days! Super nice people too! An all-around lovely experience. Sveltana and her husband are professional, prompt, and so welcoming. I had never gotten anything tailored before, but needed some dress pants hemmed and the sleeves shortened on a blazer. In less than 15 minutes, I had was given a reasonable quote, a time and date for pick up (ready in a week), and ample reassurance that the job would be done well. The sleeves were shortened enough to need a button removed and you can't even tell. The pants were hemmed beautifully. Just brought a suit pants in to get tailored. I'll update this review when I pick it up, but I expect 5 stars again. Everything about this place is spot-on. They're so very friendly, prices are great, and the timeline is better than most places here. I've been wearing suits every day for work for almost 3 years, so I've been in this whole suit-wearing scene for a little bit. So the specifics: I brought in a suit pants to get hemmed and tightened. $15 to hem, $26 to tighten = $41 total. I asked if I could get it in a week, and there was no issue with it--I bet if you need it quicker, it wouldn't have been an issue. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. read more

Svetlana saved my wedding!! I can't believe how lucky we were to find her, she is truly an angel sent from heaven. I burned a hole in the lining of my wedding dress the day before our scheduled ceremony. I don't know what I was thinking, but I had a temporary moment of insanity where I thought it would be a good idea to iron the dress, which had gotten some wrinkles in transit on our flight from NY to Seattle. (I know, regrets.) As soon as the iron touched the lining it melted a hole through it. Thank God it was just the lining, but it was right smack dab in the middle over the crotch and you could totally see it through the dress. We called the shop after finding it on yelp and Svetlana answered the phone and after listening to my story, told us not to worry and come right in and she would fix it for me in time for the wedding. We arrived at the shop and what a sweet angel we were greeted by! She's the sweetest most adorable babushka you could imagine, like a fairy godmother from a storybook. She hugged us like we were her children even though we had just met her and she reassured us that she would be able to fix it for us in time. She then sent us to the fabric store with the dress to find a similar fabric to replace the lining (she had to replace the entire front panel bc there was no way to patch it with the top layer being so translucent), and we dropped the dress and fabric back off to her around 4:30pm. She promised it'd be ready by 11:30am the next day so I would have it a few hours before our scheduled photos. She put all of her other work on hold to save my big day! WHAT A KIND ANGEL. She did this with total love and no judgement or annoyance, she just treated us like family. We got the dress back the next day and it was PERFECT. You couldn't tell anything had ever happened to it. She completely saved my wedding and I will never forget this guardian angel. Also when I was picking up my dress, another young woman stopped by just to say hi to her and show her a photo of how beautiful she looked in a dress she altered, and ANOTHER woman who was doing a fitting in the shop also stopped to sing praises about Svetlana to me. Svetlana altered my wedding gown and my husbands wedding suit. She does beautiful work at a very reasonable price. My wedding dress has very delicate lace and an illusion back and Svetlana was able to complete all the fine detail work that was needed. She never tried to up-sale me which a lot of alteration places will do. She works fast and hard and was accommodating to my schedule and even stayed late to meet with me as I work on the Eastside and it was hard to get to her before closing time. It was $50, which Svetlana quoted me ahead of time, but she admittedly took almost an entire work day and hemmed it by hand. On a recent trip out of town, I bought a custom suit from a well-known clothier based in Chicago. When the suit arrived in Seattle, there were several problems: loose strings, pulled out stitches, and the fit was just not very good. Lesson #1: never order a custom suit from some place that is not local to you. I first took the jacket (the pants were fine) to another downtown tailor that was a little closer to me based on his Yelp reviews. But after taking about 2 minutes to look over the fit, he told me that if he took in the upper back, then the vent would have to be spread apart, or he could save the vent but the back would have to be loose. I'd just have to accept that it couldn't be made to fit correctly, and there was no way around it. Well, the stupid thing was custom made and we were subtracting material not adding it, so I left. Thank goodness, because Svetlana put a spell on this jacket. I think she felt sorry for me. When I first put on the coat for her, she just grimaced and said, "awww, you poor thing," then when I told her how much it had cost me, she nearly passed out. Anyway, after spending lots of time (15-20 mins) marking and pinning everything just right, she took it and promised to do her best. I came in today, and the jacket walked over, apologized, then jumped up onto my torso. Svetlana really did an amazing job on the coat, and seeing it finally fit the way it should have in the first place was, of course, just a tremendous relief. I also brought in another sport coat today (butchered by a department store tailor). Lesson #2: take your nice clothes to a real tailor; free tailoring at a department store is not always the bargain it seems. Again, Svetlana immediately saw everything that was wrong, took plenty of time to get the fitting just right, and said she would take care of it. I'll pick it up next week, but I'm confident it will be right. And considering how much my nice clothes have been getting botched lately, I think confidence is probably the best thing a tailor could give me. read more

I am writing up a 2nd review because I need to RAVE about this place. I took 5 dresses in to Svetlana. I ordered them online and they were supposed to be made using my custom measurements (which Svetlana so expertly took for me). When they finally arrived every single dress was botched in a different way. I took them in and Svetlana was able to fix 3 of them (the other 2 the pattern was too intricate for her to be able to fix in the short time frame I had before I needed them back). She worked MIRACLES. Absolute Miracles. Not only is she a master with a sewing machine, she is also an unfailingly kind and sweet human being. I highly reccommend this place. Svetlana was very nice; however the prices really seemed excessive. She quoted me $50 to hem a pair of paints and $35 to just narrow the hem of a pair of capris from a flair to a straight cut. It just seemed too much even if the workmanship would be good for fairly simple work. read more

This really is as good as it gets with alterations. My wedding coordinator and I were so impressed with Svetlana and her ability to do what she did with my a-line gown. She took care of us from start to finish and always was so honest about her recommendations and suggestions based off her experience. Svetlana did an amazing job tailoring my wedding dress at a really affordable price. Two of the 3 layers needed to be hemmed, the straps were brought in several inches, cups were added, and a beautiful 3-point bustle was added. The total cost was $280. This price was far below the outrageous pricing quoted by the tailors recommended by the bridal shop where I purchased the dress. Svetlana is also the sweetest woman and so easy to work with. She really cares and even gave me hugs! Tip: If you want the same bridal bag back that you brought in, you should communicate that up front. She receives a lot of wedding dresses and it's easy for them to get mixed up. read more
