I had my wedding dress altered here and was very happy with the results - Svetlana is a true artist. I had very complex lace alterations with and under dress and lace overlay and when Svetlana was done with it it looked amazing! I thought the cost was also very reasonable for the amount of work required. There are typically other people in the store--it isn't a giant shop and they are often helping a few people at once (it also probably didn't help that I had a summer wedding). I love Svetlana so much. Between being a brave and talented seamstress and being one of the kindest people on earth, your wedding dress will be in safe hands with her. My wedding dress was almost two sizes too big because I lost a somewhat substantial amount of weight in the months following the purchase. It is also heavily beaded and had 8 layers of cloth and tule in the mermaid skirt. Svetlana size it perfectly to me. Her magic and talent even extended to taking in the bottom of my dress enough to show off the work I'd put in at the gym doing squats ;) I had, I think, 4 or 5 fittings and every time Svetlana and the gentleman were welcoming and genial. I love this place, and their pricing is seriously fair. A friend of mine had her ball gown style dress done elsewhere and paid almost twice as much as I did, and I'd bet I had more work done. My only note of caution is that this shop doesn't have very good airflow. These guys were the best! My father passed and the funeral was on a Monday and my son and I flew up Friday. He had a velvet suit that had to be altered to fit. They fitted him and told me how much each alteration would cost and how much time it would take. In the end they only hemmed the pants and the jacket sleeves to get it done fast (within the same day) but I appreciated their transparency. Updated Review: The first time was a charm. Second time, not so much. I had a couple of pairs of jeans that I decided to have altered. I've done it once before (years ago) and thought it might be a nice option given how much I like them still. I called and spoke with a different woman this time. I believe whoever you speak to/schedule with is the person is the person who does the work - unless you request someone specific. This was where I went wrong. I should have asked for the woman who did my first alteration. This woman, however, was friendly and reassured me that it shouldn't be a problem to do what I needed. I scheduled to come in a couple of days later. When I arrived, we went through the usual process. I tried on both jeans, she marked where adjustments would need to be made, and set expectations on when they would be done - which was actually perfect timing as I wanted to wear one of the pairs for a casual event I was going to the next week. I'll add that the cost ended up being quite a bit more than I expected but I justified it since it was a lot less hassle over buying two new pairs. (On the fun scale, shopping for new jeans runs a close second to shopping for new bras.) I was told I would receive a call when my jeans were ready. That never happened so I decided to check in the day after they were supposed to be. On the call, she informed me that she hadn't gotten to them yet but would finish that day if I wanted to come by later. I agreed and arrived thinking that I would be picking up both pairs of jeans. This is when she told me that she decided to just do one pair so she could see how they fit before completing the second pair. (I would have been fine with this process had we discussed but it wasn't the expectation that she set.) I tried on the pair she altered and they looked awful. The legs were uneven in width (one leg felt like it was cutting off my circulation). She blamed my legs for being uneven. Strange excuse especially given that she measured both of my legs. Additionally, the seam along one leg was curved and not straight. Her remedy was to shift the jeans to the side so they would lay differently on me - likely a reasonable solution for a photo but not so much for everyday, normal wear. She blamed there being too much fabric on the jeans. I also found this excuse to be very bizarre given her profession. Needless to say, the jeans were a bit of mess and needed additional work. She told me she would jump on it and asked if I could come back later that day. I received a call once the jeans were ready but told her that coming down again in traffic was just not something I wanted to hassle with. I asked her if she could go ahead and finish the other jeans as well and I would come back when they were both ready. She asked me if I wanted to re-measure before she altered the second pair. I really didn't want to hassle with coming again. I told her I would call if I could make time to come in the next day but since that wasn't likely, to go ahead if she didn't hear from me. She agreed. Visit #3 would be my last. On the plus side, the first pair of jeans fit better. The overall finished product was average in terms of the look. I wonder if the original woman I saw for my last alteration would have done better. The downside is that the second pair of jeans were still not done - and by not done, I mean not started. Again. She told me that she decided to wait because she was worried about them not fitting properly and wanted to re-measure me in them. When I asked her why she didn't call to inform me of her executive decision, she didn't have an answer and just apologized. We proceeded with taking new measurements and I left. I haven't been back in to pick them up. I had initially planned to but the weeks following were crazy. I eventually concluded that it wasn't worth the hassle - which was the whole point of altering to begin with. I did pay for upfront for both alterations so she was paid for her services. I will close by saying she and others at the business are very friendly - something I always appreciate. It doesn't change the fact that I still wanted to pull my hair out. read more

I came here after reading all the rave reviews to alter a skirt and a pea coat. I was greeted warmly like an old friend every time I entered the small shop, and each alteration was completed within the estimated time frame. Their pricing is a little high. As for the alterations...unfortunately, they did not deliver the desired results. For the skirt, I just needed the waist taken in about 1-2 inches. I was told that to make it appear more streamlined, they will be taking some of the sides along the seams in a little bit as well. Everything sounded good and made sense. But when I came back to try it on, the waist was still a bit loose and the hips protruded on the sides instead of laying flat along my hips. I was then told that in order to make it more streamlined, they would have to redo the whole side seams and that will cost more. For the coat, I wanted the waist taken in, the sleeves shortened, and the belt loops repositioned to my natural waist. I was given a quote of about $120 for all of that. When I tried on the coat after the alterations, I was shocked that it did not look or feel much different. The waist was still very loose. When I brought it up, they told me to just cinch in the belt that came with the coat. I expected more considering what I had paid for, especially not to be told to just use the belt! The sleeves were shortened but the two sides weren't even. There was a 0.5"-0.75" length difference between the left and right sleeves! I was very disappointed with my experience. read more

Svetlana is definitely a miracle worker but be prepared to spend a lot of time with her! I had no less than 7 fittings for my dress over the period of several months. I will say that she was able to alter my complicated lace dress by literally hand stitching each flower back on which was no small feat. I also strangely had a different number of buttons than button loops and Svetlana methodically counted the 37 buttons and loops and adjusted them to match. The end result was absolutely beautiful. I also find it endearing that she calls everyone "queen" and gives them a huge hug. She truly cares about her brides! Separate word of warning to brides - when you are selecting a dress and will need it hemmed, make sure to understand what kind of material the dress is made from! A simple plain material is very easy to cut and hem, but anything that has lace or any beading, or buttons, will be a nightmare to hem. I didn't even think about this when choosing my dress. As others have cautioned, beware that this is a bit of a chaotic experience! Svetlana is usually working with 2-3 other women at once and with only 2 changing "rooms", it's tight quarters. read more

Wedding Dress***5 stars for SVETLANA*** I had a very finite timeline before my wedding- about 6 weeks. I was so fortunate to find a very dreamy wedding gown off-the-rack from a local bridal boutique in Ballard. However, it also came with a number of issues that needed to be addressed and the overlay material was very delicate- I knew it might not be easy nor the most affordable given the potential amount of work, short timeline, and materials involved. When I called, they were able to book me promptly to see Svetlana. I arrived at the shop for my appointment a few days later, and there were 2 other people, who sounded to be regulars, picking up a coat and some button-up shirts. Repeat customers and regulars are always a good sign to me, especially when I only had 1 shot to get this right given the short amount of time that I was working with. Svetlana greeted me warmly and had me change into my dress. The amount of care and attentiveness that Svetlana showed during the fitting made me feel reassured that I had come to the right place. She closely examined several areas that needed a bit of mending, corset loops that needed to be replaced, and a fussy neckline that needed to be adjusted. She even found issues that I hadn't noticed, like a tear in the overlay material! She offered the option to install a bustle, and was upfront about the added cost (I ended up adding the bustle). I was clear about my timelines from the beginning, and Svetlana assured me this was doable. In fact, she gave me a date 2-weeks from my first fitting to come back to see the final result. NOTE : Keep in mind that this was in December, during off-peak wedding season, so I can't say that this would have worked out the same way during any other time of year. The finished dress was better than I could have asked for, and although I got the dress at a dynamite discount, Svetlana's work made it look like I paid much more. This is my go to place for alterations, every time I go in is always just before I need something ready and they always have done a fantastic job of making things fit me properly and in a timely manner. I am hard to please, and there have been some minor finishing that I wish were a little more polished, but most of this no one would ever notice. Despite this, I have returned to them many times over the last 3 years. They have done a whole suit alteration for me (blazer arms hemmed and taken in, and pants hemmed and tapered) all within two weeks, with everything fitting perfectly. read more

Please let me save you all some time- I live in Seattle and needed my wedding dress to be altered within 3 months of my wedding day and I needed A LOT done on the dress to make it ready. This included an under bustle, bra cups, hemming, strap shortening, and taking in the sides of the dress where it was covered in beads. I called around to probably 5 places, took my dress in and had them price it. American Freestyle was by far the most reasonably priced. I worked with Svetlana and she treated me like a damn princess! Svetlana is an absolute gem and a true artist at her craft. I don't know if there's anyone else I would've trusted more than her for my wedding gown. When I purchased my dress by Rime Arodaky, I was extremely worried about alterations due to the delicacy of the lace and the complexity of the changes I wanted to be made to it. Svetlana went above & beyond for me and the end result was stunning. I knew I wanted to rearrange the florals on the bodice of the gown upon purchase, and Svetlana was able to take lace flowers from other parts of the dress and sewed those by hand into the positions that I wanted. This was an extremely complex process and I couldn't believe she was able to do it. My naturally A-line dress was also sewn into a more form-fitting around the hips, semi-mermaid shape, at my request. It's amazing that she was able to customize this already unique gown for me, and her sweet, motherly personality just made this whole experience that much more enjoyable.
