This week I visited the store. First they got me set up with a 2nd Acura key and also reprogrammed all my other keys valet, spare and Key Fob #1. They also did this a few months ago when I got my kid a car that only came with one key and alarm. I mentioned my dead bolt at home was not unlocking. They told me to bring the dead bolt in and they could help me fix versus changing it out which also meant changing The keys to 3 other locks. I live south of the James River and I called American lock and key because I couldn't find the key to my 2007 Ford F150. I made an appointment and they came promptly at the time that they gave me. The gentleman who unlocked my car was very nice about opening my car and he did it in less than 20 minutes!. I had to make two new keys for my truck and he went on his way which I appreciate it so much. I had an appointment and he was at my apartment right on time. Have used their services 3 times over the years. First experience was great for a simple copy of a house key, quick and accurate. Second visit was frustrating, associate had an attitude and made the experience unpleasant. Third time was the most frustrating, called the day before to get a new key for the door locks on my vehicle and the associate was more than helpful over the phone and advised I could come in anytime between 8am-4pm and they could make a key for me. Said it wouldn't take them long. Show up the next day and they advised it would be about a week until they would be able to perform the service. They claimed that the tech told the person on the phone that they do this, but since I was the initial first contact, I think that they should had told me this. These folks are the best I've encountered. They saved me about $1,000 when both of my Cadillac key fobs died and the local Richmond Cadillac dealership couldn't be bothered. I have had BMW's Mercedes and Lexus for the past 30+ years and have never dealt with such arrogance from a dealer. Turner automotive suggested the American Lock could handle my problem AND THEY DID. Refused to let me pay, so I took them a large pizza the next Friday. Have been back a couple of times for the same issue and they are always the same. Top folks in my view!!! read more

I called them to make me a key for a g37 and the dude couldn't set it up and ended up dis programming the whole car because he couldn't, he tried like 7 keys and left it in security mode he said or something. before he left he said the only solution was to find the old key or take it to the dealership and I found the key but now it doesn't work , I had to pay a tow guy to take it to the dealership and when i called them they said my car was special, and I think they are the special ones because they're "specialized" in making keys but fuck don't know how to. shitty service , they're not responsible if something goes bad. the dealership told me that the dude that tried setting it up didn't do it right thats why it didn't work. read more

I had an unusual mailbox lock key for which I needed duplicates. I tried several places around Richmond but to no avail. I decided to give American Lock & Key a try as their reviews were exceptional. I had an awesome experience there. Really welcoming, knowledgeable, and wonderful staff. They all were conscientious about Covid precautions and were wearing masks. I am surprised there are any positive reviews for this company. We contacted them to get a quote on installing a card based lock for our company. The quote was beyond unreasonable. For example, they quoted $114 for a 100 ft cat 5 cable. Check Amazon. This cable can be secured for less than $22. The price of every other item on the quote was similarly inflated. Clearly we will not be doing business with these folks. read more

They left a voice mail stating the technician needed answers to a few questions or they could not do my job. They were right. They specified a door lever that did not work for the install. The back sweep of the handle prevented it from working given the light kit on the door. Despite realizing the obviously inappropriate lever that their salesperson specified (that prompted the need for answers from me) , the tech went ahead and ground down the door trim so they could twist the door knob. There is now a hole to the core in the middle of the door where the trim was. There are levers without the back sweep (SKU :EZ-3C7002 / Part# BP-500FC-MD-US26D-238). or They could have done nothing. Either would have been preferable to this hack job. (see profile picture) They offered to take the door handle back, but the damage they caused was to be on me. I was given a quote but was told she would need to check if they would "go to that area" (in Church Hill!) because maybe it had gotten better but it was bad, and there were shootings and a lot of crime. I've never had a single problem with any of their keys (are usually do with the keys made at other places like Home Depot or Walmart...). Not a reputable company. I am a project mgr. for a medical company & tried to hire this company to repair/replace some fire rated doors. It took several attempts for them to return my calls. Once I was able to get someone to survey the needed work they did not respond with a proposal as promised. After calling twice yesterday I was finally told they were not placing anymore orders with their fire door vendors. I would not trust this company to perform any work that would be required to pass a city/county inspection. read more
