We purchased a queen mattress from this store in March 2025. The salesmen were well informed and friendly, but we were surprised that one of them was smoking cigarettes at the counter. Had a full ashtray, so apparently a routine thing for him in the store. Fast forward several weeks and our original two week delivery window kept getting pushed out. After multiple phone calls, we finally had a delivery date. The delivery guys took the old bed, put it on their truck, and set up the new bed. As they were cleaning up, we noticed multiple stains at the foot of the mattress, possibly from shoes. Then we took a harder look and realized the sides of the mattress were frayed and dirty. Checked the tag and the mattress was manufactured two years prior! We bought a new mattress, not a showroom model or a used one. Stopped the delivery guys from leaving, took photos of what we saw on the mattress, had our old bed brought back up and set up with the old frame, and called the warehouse. The guy who answered said they didn't have the mattress we ordered, and didn't know when they would receive it, so they gave us this one. In other words, they KNEW the mattress that was delivered was used and tried to pass it off as brand new. Check reviews for other franchise stores for American Mattress. The scam is common. When you call them out on it, they say they got rid of your old bed, and offer a discount on the used one that was delivered to persuade you to keep it. One star because when I explained to the salesman that a refund was needed because we lost faith in their warehouse, he immediately refunded over $2K. He was apologetic but didn't seem at all surprised. We ended up buying a new mattress from Macys, which delivered the product we ordered, new not used, and delivered when they said they would. read more

I needed the mattress delivered in 3 days and Bobby made sure that the mattress was on time and that all the guess work was taken out of the equation. Not a fan. Went in to get a nice mattress, and ended up with a very high end mattress, We were told we would have it in 5 days, which was one of the reasons we bought at this store. Then 5 days came, and it was going to be another week. Then that day came, and it was going to maybe another week, maybe longer. I complained, and was given a "high end" base that was delivered, but the guys who brought it said it wouldn't fit my bed, it would wobble, which is not what the Store told us. The delivery guys and the store were telling us completely different things!!! So we refused the mattress, and wasted a month in this process. My wife and I went to this store looking to get a new, more firm mattress due to our current mattress being too soft. I sustained a back injury and just could no longer sleep on such a plush mattress. The salesman (I apologize I can't remember his name) did a wonderful job showing us around all the different kinds of mattresses at different price points and was extremely patient with us. He showed us the stuff they had on special offer and what kinds of deals he could work with us on. We ended up deciding on a mattress then and there, and got our new mattress delivered two days later. *Note: If you want to keep your old mattress be VERY clear to the delivery drivers. Without asking, they took my old mattress and slashed a huge, almost 3ft gash in the bottom of my pristine white mattress. The mattress itself was perfectly fine and I had intended on keeping it, but they just assumed for some reason that I didn't want it. The salesman at the mattress store informed me that they offer a free mattress removal service, which I adamently declined. Apparently this does not get translated to the delivery drivers, so just make sure you let them know. Now with all that being said, after I calledthe mattress store back, they replaced my now damaged mattress with a brand new one. Their customer service is amazing and they handled the situation quickly and efficiently. Even ony initial call to them, I was very upset, but he (Regional Manager, I believe his name was AJ) immediately offered to replace the mattress, with next day delivery. The place should remain nameless but we were even told how much the salesperson/owner made in commissions! I want a quality mattress, an easy buying experience and a great price, American Mattress brought it all. We got 20% off and didn't have to deal with some snarky salesperson telling me how great they're store was for people. In addition, we chose the wrong mattress initially (too firm) and had to use their 90 day exchange policy to switch out the mattress. Mattress shopping has always been an easy process for me in the past. I'd head to Bloomingdale's (or Marshall Fields back in the day), plop myself down on a few mattresses within my price range, pick one, and cha-ching...I've got myself a mattress for at least 5 years! I found that shopping with my new husband for a mattress isn't quite as easy. He spent so much time with each individual bed that I told him I'm surprised we ever got engaged because if he took this long to find a mattress I'd expect it to take him 10 years to find a diamond! His response: "The diamond was easy because it just goes on your hand...this mattress thing affects my sleep." Sigh...and so we continued to test out beds at American Mattress and probably drove the very sweet sales associate, Ed, out of his mind. Most of the mattresses at American Mattress were Serta. And I don't know much about mattresses, but I do know about marketing and they seem to be the brand leader. I think sheeps and Vera Wang when I think Serta...and I'm guessing most of America does. I also thought Serta was one of the less expensive brands out there so I was worried about the quality, but I wasn't about to get in my husband's way when it came to the mattress (at least yet). We finally decided on a mattress, but decided to make just 1 more stop at Bloomingdale's (oh, the fun continues) before fully committing so Ed let us put down a $20 deposit to lock in the weekend sale price (i think 20% off) and he said if we decided against the mattress to just call him and we'd get the $20 back. Seemed like a good deal to me! After all that we actually decided to go with another brand of mattresses after visiting Bloomingdale's.....we are now the proud owners of a new Schiffman mattress. However, if you're looking for a Serta mattress and good prices I'd recommend American Mattress and buy it from Ed! He was knowledgeable, seemed to really care about selling us a quality mattress rather than make more off the sale, and most importantly patient with us. read more

I went in wanting to spend $1,000 or under, and they showed me a few great options, along with an iComfort for $1,300. After leaving, mulling everything over, I went back a few weeks later and ended up with the iComfort. Slightly above what I wanted to pay? Yes. But oh so worth it. My husband and I finally decided to take the plunge and replace our old mattress. Unfortunately, because of covid the stores were all closed. Nevertheless, I knew we wanted a Beautyrest and chose one that was medium firm based on multiple website recommending that level for side and back sleepers. I also had and loved a Beautyrest mattress for 13 years before our last bed and trusted it would be perfect. I ended up being able to do it all via phone, even the financing, and delivery was scheduled on the day we requested. There was some confusion when the drivers didn't want to take the old mattress, which we had expressly agreed would happen and it advertised on the website. They sent the drivers back to collect it and all seemed well. However, before long we realized this mattress was way too soft. It was so squishy that we each created little trenches and I cannot imagine how this would hold up over time. We are young, fit and healthy but it took work to get out of this bed or roll around. So after a few weeks of giving it the old college try, we gave up and called. The stores were open again and we dealt with Jerry/Jerrod(? I can't be sure which it was now!) and his son, Anthony. They were both amazing. So helpful and so willing to make the exchange as easy as possible. We have our firm Beautyrest coming tomorrow and cannot wait. But I cannot tell you how lovely they both were. When. We were dealing with folks at corporate they took amazing care of us as well, under unusual and challenging circumstances. This store is great!! Came in to look at a Nectar, which I heard this store carries. Unfortunately, I had to purchase a bed during the Covid pandemic, and was nervous having to lay on beds. Walking in, I was greeted by Anthony, and he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about everything in the store (and some stuff that wasn't)! Our experience could not have been worse. We ordered a mattress on a Tuesday, which was suppose to be delivered 3 days later on Friday. That never happened and each week we were promised just one more week. After another four weeks without a mattress, we cancelled our order. The store is large and well-stocked with a good selection (hence, this is not a one star review). There were two that I really liked, but as I was just starting out with my shopping, I wanted to do some comparing, so I wrote down the make and models I liked, thanked the salesmen, and was about to go on my merry way, when I got a lecture--yes, a lecture!--from one of the salesmen. "You know, when you just walk in here and look around for a second without talking to us, you're being an uneducated consumer," he said, intently staring me down. "You don't let us talk to you, you don't let us show you around, you don't let us tell you about the company and who we are and what we do. You just come in and sit on a few beds and take notes"--here, he mimes what I gather is supposed to be me, taking notes--"but you're not being informed and not being a good shopper." After staying at the Millennium Hotel in Minneapolis M decided that we needed a new mattress. Our original mattress has done us well. I had no complaints about the body imprints and yellowed pillow top. It was from this American Mattress too so it was kismet that I spontaneously suggested to M that we stop at this random store on our way home on our bikes. It just so happened that this is where the first mattress was purchased a decade ago. The manager did most of the talking. He encouraged us to relax on each bed, putting our feet on the plastic shoe guard. He described how the mattresses were arranged in order from softest to hardest. Like tasting wines, he pointed out fine characteristics for us to notice such as the cooling sensation or how the bed provided support for our lower backs. He went on to explain the warranties, promotions, and a special program that allowed you to get money off of your next American Mattress purchase ten years later (if only we had that from the original purchase!). Although the manager was thorough, he also gave us ample time to relax onto each bed undisturbed. We spent five minutes on each bed (I timed it). We tried different pillows too. The time passed quicker than I expected and by the end of the row we went back and gave our top two picks a second round. He didn't try to up-sell us. Instead, he told us what the price would be including tax so that we could make our own decision. The manager let us leave with the promise that we would call back once we figured out how we wanted to pay. M stopped back in about two days later and bought the mattress. We were give two mattress accessories of our choice. M chose a cover and I got a pillow - each valued at about $100! They gave us a two hour window for delivery but they came at the time I requested. The delivery guys were polite and professional. They hauled away the old mattress. read more

I read the yelp reviews and he was the first to greet us when we got to the store. John was informative and explained every level of the different brands of mattresses. So this is my third and final update on our bed purchase experience from American Mattress on Clybourn...My final because I think we have finally found the bed we were looking for! We actually exchanged out the previous bed for another bed, this time a iSeries spring mattress with memory foam pillow top. So to add them up if you have been following this review, we are on the 3rd bed. John, once again, was very helpful and tirelessly worked with us to be sure we were happy. Once we decided on the bed we liked, we did our homework online looking for the best price. But John beat us to it! He did his own research and actually presented us with the lowest online price finding the exact same website we did and offered to match the price. After all was said and done, we actually got a refund since this 3rd bed was slightly less the the 2nd bed we purchased. How is that for service! Did we have a hard time finding a bed that fit us just right? Yes, but American Mattress and John made it as easy as they could and worked with us every step of the way. You are not just a number to these guys! We see them around the neighborhood and may even, from time to time, stop in to say hello! Our kids love playing on the remote controlled beds...:) Shopping for a bed? This is the only place you will want to do business. read more

After looking at 4 other mattress places, our last stop for the day was American Mattress on Clybourne. We were tired of looking, and I'm glad we had a good experience here, or else I'd probably still not have a new bed! And yay to being family owned and operated. So at first I thought I didn't need sales assistance mattress shopping, as I hate being hounded by sales people at stores. But you DO need help when shopping for a mattress! Ed greeted us right away and was super nice and helpful, and wasn't pushy or clingy at all. He's definitely a seasoned professional, he knew his mattresses and was very helpful and informative. He showed us different grade beds, explained the price points and differences. He was also honest, we asked him what kind of bed he had and what he thought of them. We finally decided on a Tempurpedic, and he told us that we had to spend at least 15 min on the bed, 5 min on each side, to fully experience the bed. And he left us alone the whole time. They also had a sale on bed frames and we got an awesome wood frame and headboard for $400! I set the delivery appointment for the following Tuesday between 6-8. I got a call the day before to let me know the wooden bed frame was out of stock, but they'd bring me one of their heavy duty metal frames free of charge. Delivery guys got there at 6:45 and were out by 6:55! The guys were very nice and friendly, were very quick with the assembly and took the trash with them and left my bedroom tidy. My one complaint is that I never got a follow up call of when the bedframe would be in, and I had to keep calling. Each time they said they'd check with the warehouse and call me back "right away" but hours went by and I would have to call myself to follow up. But, as a kudos to them, I told them that while the delivery guys were nice, they were a bit rough with assembling the bedframe and put a dent on my nice newly sanded and stained floors. The guy on the phone said we could send them the repair bill, or he'd give us $40 off. And when the guys came to deliver my bed (finally), they said they were sorry about the floor and would be careful this time - so the store did tell them about it. Finally 4 weeks later my bed was back in stock, after I called to check again (no one called me to let me know it was in stock). I set the delivery appointment for the next day between 3-6. Same 2 delivery guys showed up at 3:45 and were out by 4pm. Finally done and I have a nice new comfy awesome bed! read more
