Making the appointment through the Red Cross app was simple enough. Make sure you complete that questionnaire before arriving for your appointment to speed things up. Inside, once you get checked in and are ready to donate, you are led to a very comfortable looking makeshift bed. Each bed has a TV screen where you can access many streaming services. Once I was hooked up to the machine, my donation timer started and I had locked into a good movie on Netflix. The Red Cross worker who assisted me in getting set up and comfortable was quite capable and she was quite skilled at finding the vein for the donation. Once I was finished, their snack bar section is out in front by the entrance. They have a few tables, a good assortment of snacks, juice, water and a TV for entertainment.

I have never given blood before, and I was pretty anxious about it. The wonderful staff at Heartland Blood Centers in Winfield made the experience so positive I am actually looking forward to going back and donating again (which I never ever expected). I tried last week and they (Crystal- so nice) told me they couldn't let me do it because I had a headache. They were nice about it and explained that it might not be safe for the recipient of my blood (because I could be developing a cold or flu) and might also exacerbate my headache if I went through with it. I appreciated how careful and professional they were about it. This is serious business. I went back today and was able to donate. I was so impressed by everyone working- they were patient, friendly, informative, professional, positive, likable and careful. They made me feel important and special. It was such a positive and caring place to be. I was really surprised. Make sure if you have never done this before to bring a list of all out of country travel you have done in the past three years. You will also need your photo ID. Make sure you've had a good meal about two hours before going and that you've had a lot to drink in the days leading up to going. They have you read some information, fill out a form, and then take you into a room to ask you questions and go over your information. They take your blood pressure, temperature, and then do a finger prick to check your iron level. If all looks good they take you to the donation chair and explain everything thoroughly. I didn't think that it hurt at all. The regular whole blood donation only took about 8-9 minutes. They kept checking in with me making sure I was OK. After you're done and you sit in the chair a bit with your arm raised they let you go sit in the waiting area and drink and eat snacks. I love snacks :) so this made me very happy. They have a great selection. They have rewards programs you can get involved with. They said they'll let me know after they test my blood if everything is OK. I guess you can donate every 8 weeks or so. The other thing I thought was cool is that my husband has been donating blood for years at another Heartland Blood Centers location in Westmont, and just came with me for moral support. They treated him super well too, offering him snacks and drinks, and that made me feel good that they were so nice to him. My husband was really impressed with this location too- he kept saying, "Wow, she (Chaz) was really good.) I guess I could go on and on. I just never thought it would be such a positive experience. I highly recommend this location!

If *I* can do it, you can, too. Trust me. I'm now a Heartland (Bloomingdale) regular, but recently had to cancel one of my Saturday appointments. Luckily Winfield and Aurora are open on Sundays so I could still get in when I felt better! Location (because Google Maps liiiied to me!): In the same strip mall as Prairie Path Cycle at the intersection of County Line and Geneva Roads. The staff, as always, is AMAZING, and the facility is homey. There are magazines, a little play/activity area for the kiddies, and TVs in view for donors. Snacks include Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies, which is kind of a big deal. FYI: Naperville, Joliet, and DeKalb will soon be open every OTHER Sunday! Soo, if you can't get in to donate during the week, know you can donate on the weekends! Please, if you're eligible: give the gift of life-saving blood products!

I went to the Versiti blood center in Westmont today, intending to donate for the first time in a number of years. As soon as I walked in the door, one of the employees told me there would be a wait. This surprised me, because I keep hearing on the news that there's a desperate shortage of blood right now. But I wasn't in a hurry. I was told to start by washing my hands, which I did. Then I went over to the check-in desk -- but after standing there for a while without anyone coming over to get me checked in, I sat down until someone did. I handed her my driver's license, which she entered -- and then she told me I had to fill out a questionnaire on their website. This is where the problems began. I couldn't get into their WiFi through my phone, so she said they would set me up with a tablet. I got through the first 3 questions, and then it told me to answer a long list of medications. I couldn't READ the list because the print was small and my glasses kept fogging up (it happens when I need to wear a mask indoors, which everyone was still doing at the blood center). I took my glasses off but couldn't see at all. I tried to make the print bigger by spreading my fingers on the screen, but then I was removed from the medication list page completely. I tried clicking the Help button, but that did basically nothing in the way of actual help. Finally, I said I couldn't get into the list and I was going to leave and try again some other time. One of the employees said they were sorry, but no one actually came over and tried to help me. Here's the thing: It shouldn't be HARD to donate blood. That includes would-be donors my age (over 70) who have trouble reading small print on someone else's tablet. Why don't you just automatically offer donors the option of filling out a printed-out list, instead of requiring everyone to use that website? If you really are desperate for blood donations, you need to make it easy to do. Otherwise people will be so turned off by the process that they won't take the time to come back and give.

I arrived for my appointment and was taken to a little room to be asked screening questions. The first question was "how much do you weigh?", keep in mind there is no maximum weight limit to donate, but their beds only go to 350 pounds. So if you aren't within their bed guidelines your blood is no good to them. They don't have a full range of blood pressure cuffs either, so after using a cuff that was way to small my bp comes back normal. However, the cuff got so tight it caused an extreme amount of pain, pain elevates your heart rate, also a disqualifier. Instead of waiting a few minutes for my heart rate to come back down (it was normal before they took my bp) I got "well your heart rate is too high, so there is nothing we can do. Here is a coupon for a free pint of ice cream." Really! If they are in such desperate need of blood one would think they would want to be as accommodating as possible. I will be finding a new company to donate with.

Even little St. Mary's in Janesville, Wisconsin can do port draws! The oncologist thought he was much better than he was (so he'll never be a GREAT doctor). I offered to take the day off, but he told me I'd be in and out in 10 minutes. I was there roughly 3.5 hours. Find a REAL cancer center, like Rush or UW.
