The BioLife location at 4747 N Harlem remains chronically understaffed. While the employees are diverse, friendly, and professional, there are never enough of them to make wait times reasonable. For instance, once again this morning there was only 1 individual doing screenings for returning donors. The other staff member was responsible both for screening new donors and managing the front desk but not for returning donors. Therefore, the line for screening returning donors was actually two lines as there just was not enough physical room to accommodate everyone in one line. The wait times at Biolife do not end after screening. I have never seen all of the beds being used at Biolife. For instance, this morning only 4/6 zones on the donation floor were even open resulting in, at bare minimum, 1/3 of the beds sitting unoccupied at any given time - and this is with a line of over a dozen donors waiting in the phlebotomy line! Needless to say, even once I received a donation bed, the attendant had 3 other donors to care for before taking care of me. The fact of the matter is that donating at BioLife is impossible if you have a schedule to maintain or value your time in any way, shaper, or form. What I experienced today is typical and outlines why this is my last donation at BioLife. No one can truly say that they are cared for when their time is wasted so consistently in such a frivolous, disrespectful, and careless manner. read more

I was a regular here for many years. The staff Amy, especially is extremely rude. I was holding back for so long, but I started going to another plasma donation place in the city and I was a little hesitant about going because of my horrible experience at BioLife in Harwood Heights. Not trying to discourage anybody, but the staff definitely needs some work. While I was donating, I was watching some of the staff members at Biolife talk to some of the donators it is rude and belittling to people trying to number one do good number to make a little money. They need to rethink their hiring process and hire people that actually know what they are doing. This was my first time at this location and this has never happened to me. The phlebotomists do not know what they are doing and they had to use both my arms to donate blood because the girl who inserted the needle in my arm did not do it right. My boyfriend also came with me and one of the girls, whatever she did while he was donating blood his needle came out and it was blood everywhere and then told him it was okay he didn't have to donate anymore and he can leave with pay. They gave me a hematoma and still told me I will not get paid if they can't switch the needle in my other arm so I have to complete the process, even though they already messed up my other arm. Horrible experience. They need people who have experience and who know what they're doing not just rushing just to get what they want. That's not how this company should be represented. I will never come back to this location and I think you people should think twice before coming here. Best location hands down is ADDISON LOCATION. I had a terrible experience at Biolife Harwood Heights! First, the line was relatively short to check in, but there was only one person at the counter so the checkin process took half an hour. I was finally in the donation chair, but it was more than half an hour before anyone came to start the donation process, or even acknowledge me. Then the phlebotomist (who was very nice) seemed very inexperienced, because she had to move the needle three times before getting my vein, which was torturous. Even after all of that, the machine wasn't registering my donation, so she called someone else over to check my needle. She wound up using my other arm, which also hurt, and the machine still wasn't working. I was given ice for my arms and sent home without donating. After all of that torture (and two and a half hours of my time), I only received $40, because their week goes Monday - Sunday, so it counted as my first donation of the week. I was just there three days ago and received $45, so I expected $85 this time. I don't see anywhere on the website where it says the week starts on Monday. Both of my arms are now so beaten up from yesterday's experience that I know I will be turned away if I try to do a second donation this week. People should get the same amount for each donation, not twice as much for the second one. I have been injured several times there and unable to donate a second time, through no fault of my own. read more

Expect to be here for about 2-3hours on your first initial visit! Bring a book for earbuds to keep you entertained!! Staff is great and friendly. They've always been upbeat and friendly. The donation process takes about an hour on average. Make sure you are well hydrated and have a balanced meal before going!! Check their website for monthly promos and coupons. I've gone to Biolife Plasma now about 5 times now. I did get a hematoma twice but I attribute it to my small veins and probably inadvertently moving my arm around once. The techs and nurses there seem very competent to me. dJ is awesome and everyone seems friendly and caring. Should be zero stars. Discriminatory staff and facility turned us away for having autism. Autism is not transmittable by blood if you couldn't tell and the patient that was going to donate blood is healthy and in good form otherwise and is fully capable of speaking for himself and I was only there to facilitate for the doctors and be helpful for them so they should've been thankful instead of discriminatory, we will be proceeding further measures based on this discrimination. read more

Admittedly, I haven't actually gone through the process, but I had a 4:45 appointment and at 5:14, I've gotten my veins checked and that's it. There are about 17 people waiting for their appointment. I've never had such a long wait at Vitalant, which is surprising because this BioLife location is set up to look and act like an assembly line. I am from out of town, but wanted to keep donating at Biolife while on a business trip. This location is by far the most in efficient donation center I have ever been to. It took over three hours from when I walked in the door, before I walked out. I understand they might be short staffed, and that is obviously a problem that many businesses these days, but then they should adjust the amount of appointments they are accepting. The real problem as I see it was the lack of a system to determine who was the next donor in the process. After I sat down on the bed, 3 other guys sat down in my zone after me. The staff kept track, but started the last to sit down first! Then at the end, I finished before the guy next to me by about a minute, but the unhooked him first. I have donated over 150 times at 3 other locations, and never had that problem. I changed my next to Chicago area appointments to the Addison location. They were A LOT better! read more

I'm a 67 year old on a fixed income so looking forward to earning some extra cash, website said 'hey, up to 69 years old, no problem! so good. Checked out the website in detail and gathered all my documentation, then made the slow, hour long trek to get there. Waited for 30 minutes then started the screening, docs are ok, medical stuff good, finger prick good, then off to take a 30 minute touch screen test. More waiting. Fine so far maybe an hour and a half in and all the hard stuff done and good. Then... I meet with the nurse, last step. I'm in great health so no worries. I sit down and she says 'how old are you?' 67 I said. Well there's a problem, she said: "over 67 you need a DOCTORS PERMISSION to give plasma." WHAT??? ... there is NO mention of that ANYWHERE on the website. The website actually says say up to age 69 is OK. If that is truly the requirement, couldn't the website mention the 67 year old 'permission requirement' I ask? Or point that out the DOZENS of times it was written in my paperwork. I mean do they really want 67 year old people of Chicago driving across the city, wasting their entire day, wasting $20 worth of gas only to be BLIND SIDED at the very end of the entry tests - AFTER grinding through hours of diagnostics??? Mind you I had put my birth date on EVERY form from the initial sign up on the website to the NUMEROUS forms I filled out. MANY, MANY times they COULD have asked about if I had the special Dr. permission, as they require a 67 year old. Obviously BioLife doesn't care about us 67 year olds of the world, and are fine with wasting our time, our cars, our gas. Oddly, no other plasma places have this odd arrangement, most are OK with even 70 year olds donating. Yeah of course I complained to the nurse, even talked to the manager. They were nice enough but I could tell they were just eager to get me out of there. Nothin' they could do, company policy, though yeah, they could see my point they finally kind of agreed, after enough brow beating. I said, how about an asterisk on the website were it says '69 year old age limit' that adds "you're gonna need a permission slip if you're older than 67" on their web site. Not so hard. Look if it's your policy, why not put it out there so you don't screw up someone's entire day? It might save certain people in that 67-69 age group from having a really bad, really pointless, really wasted day. IF it is your policy, why not put it right up front? Most likely they don't give a rats *ss about older people and would rather they just stay away. Frankly if I had know about the secret 'Dr. permission clause' I would have skipped going there. Not worth waiting 15-30 mins to get screened another 45 mins to get stuck 1 hr to donate and another 30 mins to get unhooked. Long lines, low pay, rare promotions. Avoid on the weekends at all cost. Phlebs are inconsistent. Some jab the needle in, only a few seamlessly insert the needle. Staff wouldn't accept a court order as proof of legal name change, something more than adequate for all processes at federal and state offices such as the dmv. I understand it's a less than common situation, but an organization this size should absolutely have a process like that, especially for medical services. They are homophobic, rude and unprofessional. My fiancé used to go to octapharma but stopped going because it was too far. Then we discovered bio life and thought it may be better since it seemed to be cleaner and it was over all closer to us. Anyway the first day she went in they didn't let her donate so she went again (was also turned away). She finally went and they let her donate but they made it obvious that they pick and choose people as they let the visibly straight men come in after smoking a cigarette to donate. But my fiancé smells like smoke because she's around smokers and they told her "you can't come in smelling like smoke" and she was okay with it because the thought that maybe she did smell a little too strong. She finally went back today and had a little makeup left on her face from yesterday when I did crazy makeup on her and they pulled her to the back for a "concern". So pretty much she went into a back room and they brought up her "smelling like smoke again" after two men came in after JUST smoking a cigarette and went straight to the donation seat and nothing was said to them. Anyway she's still in the back room and the lady with a visible attitude is trying to say my fiancé has pink eye and smells like smoke. Anyway my fiancé tells her it's left over makeup (one eye is pink one is blue you can clearly tell it's makeup) and the lady was saying that if she can wash it off she can try again. Which if she was a feminine female and not a masculine female would she have been asked to wash her makeup off? No but not everyone has money for super pigmented pink eyeshadow. This lady has been giving her an issue since her first time going there two weeks ago and being clearly homophobic (she's been fine with the heteros). Also if this place stopped everyone who "smelled like smoke" how would they have any sort of business. And I made sure she didn't smell like smoke before she left and I was on the phone the whole time because I just knew they were going to pull something again!!! read more
