We've written with different outfits before and we loved that American Safari was that it wasn't just riding in a line you got to be out in the open range. The horses were wonderful. The staff was wonderful in our group of 20 Had a wonderful time. But Billy works as how they break you up into smaller groups. I came here back in mid-late August of last year. I was looking for a horseback ride to round out my Colorado hiking trip and they were able to put me on a 2 hour ride with a couple that also had a ride booked. For a riding outfitter, they offered a pretty nice experience if you're not an equestrian - they encourage you to have independent control of your horse on the ride so that you're NOT riding nose-to-tail. They also, very briefly, allowed one or two opportunities to trot, which is very rare for outfitters to allow, stateside. Those were really nice selling points for me, as Im an English rider. I also got a sassy gelding named Monroe who was always ready to go faster (I had no problem holding him back and he was always very respectful of what I asked). Monroe also got a bit spooky at times when we approached a certain area and might have given me a small crow hop at one point. Again, I didn't mind his spunk! I just stayed relaxed and listened to the guide's instructions to have someone else lead (horses can get spookier when they're the lead horse) The landscape was not that interesting. We went up a big hill and then we did go through some nice aspen groves, but it wasnt too awe inspiring. They did say if we came back they would go different routes. For the horses, the crew, and the opportunities - I'd give em a 5 star. For the views, maybe a 3.5ish. Overall, I'd give em another go. I wouldn't do less than a 1 hour experience. read more

It was amazing!!! We've been here 3 times, two times for horse back riding, and one other time for the ATV tour. The guides are always so kind and encouraging, and even though the ATV tour wasn't free range, we still had a blast! The horses though, THAT was my favorite. I had Moon the first time and Alaska the second. Both of those horses were amazing, but I would say the horse you get will affect how much you enjoy it. Still, HIGHLY recommend this for anyone in the FairPlay area. read more

It was just amazing to take the family out for a 1hr 30min horse back riding tour. It was wonderful scenic area we road through with Aspens, small rock formations, a beautiful stream and wide open meadows. We made our way on horse back through a meadow where we found a doe with her two fawns. We also heard Elk bugling in the distance. It was just an awe inspiring horse back ride. Our guide Pedro was extremely friendly and informative. He led us to an old home stead that was from the 1800s. He made us all feel comfortable and safe. He took a lot of amazing pictures for us as well. We all really enjoyed his stories and his warm demeanor. It was just a magical family experience; they had us ride side by side and not in a line which is unique. They also have goats, alpacas and chickens on the ranch as well. My wife and I had an amazing ride with Big Haus aka future owner! We can't express enough his teaching and enthusiasm for his horses. He loves them like children. This was no nose to butt ride. He blazed some new trails since we had some more experienced riders. Weather was great, company with my wife celebrating 23 years too. Well worth the ride! The 2 hr ride was even cheaper than Breck Stables plus a half hour more ride. Bingo! Go to American Safari Ranch. We'll be back! For all the negative reviews sorry. This review is specifically for Chuck and not the owner. Before coming to the ranch we had called earlier in the morning and the owner told us to go to another ranch instead. After that interesting start we had Chuck and Haus help us get on the horses and it started raining so they let us borrow some of their jackets because we forgot our own. Chuck was awesome the entire tour, he helped us become comfortable with the horses and showed us cool things along the way. Highly recommend going horseback riding here, just ignore the bad service from the owner. The views were amazing, the horses were so smart and almost just did everything on their own, you stayed in a group but were able to go on different trails and explore while still near everyone. read more

American Safari Ranch was amazing! We had a group of 15 that wanted to horseback ride and ATV. Ages ranged from 8 - 70. Chuck, Chaz, & Hoss are the coolest Cowboys we've ever met! They were knowledgeable of the Colorado terrain and history of the area! They engaged in great conversation and there was not one female in the group that did not leave there without a crush on a true cowboy! We all felt safe and had a great morning with them! Don't go here. The owner is a POS. After we paid, he then insisted we wear his dirty helmets even though the website doesn't show a helmet requirement. Made reservations for 12. Showed up at 1145 and they asked us why we were so late. Then they said they wouldn't be ready for us until 1245. We probably didn't get on the trail until around 1pm. They gave us free lunch to try to make up for it but it was just super irritating. Getting on the trail was fun. Although it's not a wooded area. You do get beautiful views and go over a small river. FYI u go in a single file line , I kept wanting to go faster but they never went fast. At the end they gave everyone free horseshoes as souvenirs which was nice. HORRIBLE! Don't go there. As so many other reviewers wrote the owner is rude & disrespectful to guests & even his own employees. We arrived with a reservation and had to wait over an hour for someone to show up to check us in. The owners wife showed up eventually & didn't know at all about our reservation. We were told on the phone that the reservation was charged in advance upon arriving they wanted to charge again. When I called the owner for clarification he insulted us saying they've been doing this for 35 years.. apparently in all that time they never learned to value their customers. The owner constantly berated other guests & his own employees the whole time.. I felt bad for the guides having to work there so left a large tip for the wranglers for having to put up with a man that clearly should not be in this business and who needs to get some psychological help. read more

One of the best horseback riding experiences I've ever had. I went this past winter and it was awesome! Their land is right in a valley between all of the mountains near FairPlay, other words South Park. Even in the winter, we stayed plenty warm and had an amazing view. It was the first time I've ever been riding with instructors that tell you not to follow other horses. Our instructors were friendly and funny. I also liked that they were knowledgeable about the surrounding mountains and how they got their names. read more

I had an amazing time here! We scheduled for horse back riding and it was an experience I will never forget. Everyone was super helpful with getting up on the horses and teaching us how to ride. My horse gypsy was super sweet and loved to stop to eat. It being my 30th birthday I wanted to ride ATV's. Every place we called weren't offering ATV tours, even American Safari Ranch. When we got here, I was so excited to hear they were running them!! A couple days before it snowed effecting the condition to ride. Luckily the snow melted and we got to ride ATV's! NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY. Do not stay close to winter. The owners are horrible people who are very rude and obnoxious. We rented a room in their "hotel" for a month after just moving to the area. Our family of three. Our daughter just turned three in August. And on Halloween night three days before we are supposed to leave they send their ranch hands to tell us we have to leave. Mind you we already paid $950.00 and some change to stay a whole month. They told us the owner said we had to leave first thing in the morning cause they were turning off the power to the hotel. Which they preceded to do that night while we were still in the room. And it was 29 degrees that night. And throughout our stay we couldn't understand why it was getting freezing cold at night with the heater on 80. They can control the heater from their office where they were stayed above the hotel. And they were cutting it off at night to save themselves money. It was just snowing a few days before this. They were nice enough to not turn off the bathroom light for us. And when morning came we had started packing up our car to leave and the owner sent another ranch hand to take pictures of our car and license plate cause he thinks we probably broke stuff in the room. So we called the park county police department to have an officer look over the room before we left. Were we're from originally is Florida and it's illegal to do that. Or any of this. read more

No idea where that other reviewer went and I can only think they might have some interest with a local competitor. My wife and I had a great time on the two-hour open ride. She learned to ride before she learned to walk, and I've ridden only six or seven times in my life. We both had a fantastic time and all the guides and owner were wonderful. Rather than a head-to-butt trail ride, this is an open-range ride with a guide, and the best I've been on. Prices were very reasonable ($120 for a 2-hour ride for two people) and were set with reservations a week in advance, so I've no idea what that other reviewer is talking about. For being the best ride I've been on with great service at a reasonable price, this company gets a 5-star rating. We'll be back to do a winter ride with some friends, and are looking forward to it! read more

If you truly care about the life of a horse or the well being of a horse in the long run you should not go here. They work there horses alot and they don't care who they go to either. These horses are worked from as young as possible and then when they are no longer can create a profit they take there horses to a horse auction, but not just any horse auction they take them to CLA, which is Centennial Livestock Auction and the only people there 9 times out of 10 are killers buyers who will buy the horses at the lowest rate and then take the horses to be slaughter for human consumption. They maybe a great place to go but then you find out what and how they truly care about there horses and instead of rehoming them to good home, they send them to the slaughter auction where they admit that they know there horses will be bought by slaughter buyers who only have one goal in mind. This place should not be trusted, they take horses that are not suitable for a dude ranch or when they just can't ride anymore and then they just sell them for a couple hundred bucks and they know exactly the fate of the horse. They care more about profit then the life and care of a horse and instead of allowing it to retire after years of work they would much rather just send horses to slaughter. This is not a good company in my book and I need to warn others they dont care about there animals they only care about profit and do not care about where or how violent a horses dies. Wonderful experience! We had 6 people with not a lot of experience, mainly nose to tail type experience and the handlers and guides put us at ease. We were able to ride freely next to each other not walking the horses in a boring straight line. Everyone at the ranch were kind and helpful. Our guide Barbara was knowledgeable and funny and we had an enjoyable time. The owner allowed us to hold our reservation until I could make sure the time slot worked for all of us with no worries of paying and then having to cancel. We rode our full 2 hours and then got a free delicious lunch! When we return to the area we will return to the Amerixcan Safari Ranch! Would love to try this in winter too! read more

Horrible service. We booked a horseback riding trip for 3 in advance and paid. When we arrived to check in, man told us the group size would be 25. He was not wearing a mask. I told him we were not comfortable riding with 20 strangers in these pandemic times and he told us not to tell him how to run his business and that he was joking. He was then agressive towards my 9 year old daughter saying she was not a horse rider...wanted to test her with 3 questions to prove it. It was absolutely bazar. He was trying to make her feel bad for not being an experienced rider to make a point that we can't tell him how to run his business. I asked for a refund and he kept telling me not to tell him how to run his business. I don't even understand what happened. He never gave us a refund. I'll take it up with my credit card company. As we walked away, he yelled things at us like go to mc Donald's and tell them how to make a hamburger. Seriously, all we said is we weren't comfortable being grouped with 20 strangers and he blew up. read more

Booked a reservation for 9am, never received a confirmation or anything. We showed up at 835am, and waited over 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. At 859am, the owner (?) Or whoever came to us, seemingly frazzled and aggravated, saying we should have been there at 830am and we need to hurry because he has another ride at 11am. He never told us to be there at 830 - he only said be there at 9am; there was never a confirmation email sent; and the whole time he was shoving paperwork in my friend's face and asking how we want to pay. We even said we have cards and were ready to pay, but he just walked out of the office and rode away on his ATV. We waited for another 10 minutes before we left. 2 hours later, we noticed a $450 charge on the card used for a reservation. When we called the ranch, he was extremely rude and hung up in our faces. He told us that we were disrespectful to the horses and literally said "yall couldn't come dressed like that" - we were in leggings, tops, and boots. We called again and he never answered the phone. If this is the "best" ranch Colorado has to offer, then I dont want to visit them or any other. read more
