I won't be going back here. I get that, as a business-person, getting repeat business is crucial, but this experience was akin to attending a never-ending timeshare presentation. I got a Livingsocial deal for a facial at American Skin Care. I was nervous after reading reviews on here regarding the staff's hard-selling and pushing of "additional services" on customers. In my opinion, if you can't afford to offer a discounted product and eat the difference, don't offer the discount! Offering a discount then forcing add-ons on your customers (that rightly should have been included) to make your money back is wrong. And that's exactly what they did. Nanci, my esthetician, was very nice. We had a good chat during my facial. But during the treatment, she told me I needed to buy an "exfoliating treatment" for an additional $25, whereas, I've never heard of a facial that didn't include exfoliation. I bought it, 'cause I thought the facial would be useless without it, but when she tried to sell me some "ampule hydrating" treatment to go under my mask for another $15, I refused. I'd already paid $22 for the LivingSocial deal, so I didn't actually end up with a discounted treatment, in the end. The masks, as others mentioned, are very Hannibal-Lecter-inspired, and I cracked up while the first one was on my face (to warm my skin before extraction). The extractions were rough, and she used great force on my nose, though a previous esthetician specifically told me not to due so due to burst blood vessels in that area (those bright red veinies on your nostrils). So I'm concerned she did some damage there. My chin and nose were violently-itchy post-extraction, and I let her know I didn't want any more add-on products for fear of how my sensitive skin might react. I did really enjoy the facial massage and upper chest massage, in fact, I would've paid for that alone and skipped the rest. The room was really comfy, and looked clean, and the facility was nice. Nanci made sure I had some water and got to use the restroom before she began, which I appreciated! Then, post-treatment, another hard sell. How about some products to take home for a couple hundred dollars? How about a facial package for a couple hundred more? I've posted a photo of the recommendations I was given, and their price tag. All in all, this would've been SO much better if they didn't seem so desperate for business, and weren't constantly distracting me with a sales pitch. No thanks! read more

I purchased a Groupon deal for a facial and body wrap treatment. They messed up my scheduling and just booked me for a facial only so I have to come back and do my body wrap treatment another day. The girl at the front desk and the girl doing my facial were very apologetic. However, that doesn't stop me from giving this place a 4 stars. :) I will update this review when I get my body wrap treaatment done. Getting to this location wasn't too difficult for me. I live in Norwood so Dedham is like the next town over. When I arrived I was a little skeptical at first for a few reasons: there is only street parking, the outside looks like a small store front, the area looks kinda sketchy, not to mention I HATE Dedham Square (for personal reasons, had a car accident there recently and it is such a confusing area). But you know what they say- never judge a book by its cover. Inside is nice and cozy! The Christmas decorations were still up and it was very tastefully done. The seating area was very comfortable, there is a three seater couch, two chairs, coffee table with numerous interesting books to choose from. Instantly I felt at home and welcome. The girl at the front desk offered me a drink of water while I filled out the questionaire. On a side note, the questionaire was very interesting/ funny to say the least. For example, one of the questions was: do you exercise, then it asks you to list winter and summer sports. LOL! The facial was a nice experience. The room was small and welcoming much like the front seating area. The lighting was dim- to set the mood I suppose. There was a candle lite on the counter too which was a nice touch. The bed was so soft and so comfortable with just the right amount of firmness. The girl who did my facial was very nice. I forgot her name (I apologize-I'm so bad with names!). She did not use steam! Instead she applied warm damp cloths over my face and placed a mask on me which slowly warmed up. She left me there for about 10 minutes. I used this time to meditate, Before she left she turned on a heater for my feet, much appreciated! When she came back, we started the part I absolutely hate about facial, the part where they remove the black heads, white heads and what have yous. I hate that part because it is always pretty uncomfortable and painful. Much to my surprise it did not hurt one bit! I even told her how surprised I was that the procedure did not hurt. The girl told me that the damp cloth warm face mask thingy warms and opens my pores more than the traditional steam would hence less pain. Woo hoo! Then she did another mask thingy which was suppose to pull in moisture to my face, she says. She left the room, but I used that time to mediate again. After my facial, I went to use their bathroom. The bathroom was so cute. Again there were candles, it added a nice touch to the decor. When I looked in the mirror, I was shocked. My face looked incredible! It looked so smooth and supple and it felt unbelieveable soft. My boyfriend even commented on my skin, he told me I looked like I was glowing. Overall, I had a wonderful experience here. I would have given American Skin Care 5 stars but it lost a star for the scheduling/ miscommunication error. This place is not at all pretentious but rather very warm, cozy and inviting. I loved my facial here. I have very acne prone, combination oily/dry skin and wow are they doing wonders for my face. I originally purchased a groupon for here, I thought for the price it was worth it from Boston, I'm also from the country so driving that far to get to anything is pretty normal for me. Anywho, I had never had a facial like this, an "american" facial, you can google and read all about the electricity and masks they use, extractions hurt less and it looked like moisture was pumped into my skin. My facialist always makes me laugh because she loves "extracting" black heads, I love her for it because she does an incredibly thorough job. As for pushing products on me yes they offer some, but I don't understand the complaints because everywhere I have gone offers "extra" products. The prices here are wayyy less than any other facial and the results are amazing. You walk out and there's a mirror and you can instantly see how healthy your face looks. I bought the package and next week I am going in for my microdermabrasion. I am very excited to begin clearing my acne scars. read more

Eh, just OK... I, too, purchased a Groupon for a microdermabrasion treatment, which was just so-so. I feel like the aesthetician was kind of going through the motions. It was late, I was the last client of the day, etc. I wholeheartedly agree with other patrons who say the sales pitches on pricey add-on treatments are ridiculous. One reviewer said it best: "if you can't afford to offer the treatment at a discount rate, DON'T offer it". I was upsold on a $40 post-micro treatment with some reflective shield under my head, with a heated mask on my face. Eh. I walked out of there paying an extra $40 plus a $15 tip, and honestly, my skin didn't really look much better in the next few days. Do your research, folks. I wish I had. read more

I usually leave facials red and irritated, I have acne prone dry yet oily sensitive skin. I can't say enough positive about this place! I started coming around a year ago after a groupon for microdemabrasion and became a regular. When I saw the exterior, I was cautious, but once you walk in... :) It's warm and cozy, the person at reception was nice and friendly. My person (Katie) walked me back to the room and I climbed into a nice heated bed. She tried out the level of abrasion on my hand first and then on my face to make sure it wasn't too strong for me and away we went! She made a few "up sell" remarks, which always annoy me, but she respectfully accepted no (and I know that's part of their job." On my way checking out, I was informed about a facial package that included a free micro and took them up on it! I've been coming back every 3-5 weeks since and have yet to have a bad experience. They are always friendly and respectful. And the products smell so good that it follows me to my dreams and has become a part of my "happy place." read more

I had a full body scrub after being in the steam room for over 35-40 mins it felt wonderful. She came in but no effort into the scrub after that I showered and put a towel on as the steam lifted I looked around and saw lots of mold in there. I was wondering why I was having such a bad headache I am highly allergic to mold then I realized why. I just had the most AMAZING facial!! Absolutely love this place. The decor is warm & welcoming. Glenda is such a sweetheart! No hard push on products. As you step into the treatment room you are created by a clean, calm atmosphere. The table/bed is comfortable with fresh linens , a blanket & a warmer turned on if you want it. First a wonderful cleanse of your face, then a close look at your skin to determine what your skin is is need of. I opted for an additional enzyme treatment which is applied while the steam open up your pores. Next a mask is applied to help your skin absorb the wonderful propolis. Then a fantastic massage of your face, shoulders, and neck which so relaxing!! Finished up with a propolis serum & Pevonia moisturizer and I am good to go!!! My skin looks & feels amazing!! I'm excited to be the first to review this place on Yelp! I bought a groupon to come here and didn't know at all what to expect. Normally I go to Bella Sante where I pay $80 for a 50 minute facial. The price of a 50 minute facial at American Skin Care is $55, so I was skeptical. Here is what I noticed: 1) The location is not ideal. I mean, it's randomly in Dedham, which is not entirely convenient for those of us in Boston. Also, it's not a fancy shmancy place. However, it's by no means a run-down place. The waiting area is small and cozy. The rooms and equipment are modern. 2) The lady who owns it is really cool. She was headed to the gym when I arrived and I instantly liked her. 3) The lady who worked on my skin (forgive me...I already forget her name) was knowledgeable and experienced. She also didn't give me the hard sell on buying products, which I often get at Bella Sante. She diagnosed my skin accurately and I trusted her. 4) The facial itself was the most different type of facial I've ever experienced. At first, I was a little put off by the fact that most of the facial was me lying there without the esthetician in the room. At Bella, they never leave you. If you're getting a masque, they rub your feet and hands. However, I began to realize a few things...what was going on was not your average fluff and buff. What she was doing to my skin was actually dramatically changing it (for the good). Three things I noticed: a. They use a warm face heating pad instead of steam. Normally I'm all about the steam, but the heat made my skin so pliable that... b. Extractions were amazing. I have NEVER had someone do such a thorough job. I love how they call popping zits extractions. That is so funny. Anyway, she cleaned our my pores more thoroughly than anyone I've ever been to. c. The weird water thing. She put wet gauze on my face and then put on this other type of heating pad thing that didn't heat up, but instead conducted an electric current of some sort which literally forced the moisture into my skin. When I looked at myself in the mirror afterwards, I was literally shocked with how plump and healthy my skin looked. I'm telling you. Something happened. 5) The music was SO funny. Normally spas pipe in like...soft flutes and stuff. This place had the funniest radio station ever playing. I'd call it, "Random Slow Songs I've Never Heard". For example, I heard "My Heart Will Go On" sung in (I think) Japanese. I also heard a George Michael song I'd never heard before (which is weird because I thought we all knew everything he'd ever done). Some random operatic sounding guy sang a horrible love song and everyone in the room cheered after he finished. I actually enjoyed the humor of it. I decided to buy a package of 6 facials since this one was so effective and got 6 for $250 which is $42 per facial, which is half the price of Bella Sante for a better treatment in my opinion. Also, she threw in a microderm abrasion that I will take next time I go in. All in all, an excellent choice for those of you who go to the spa for results. My experience at American Skin Care was pretty horrible, bordering on traumatic. I bought a $45 Groupon for a American facial with a collagen eye and lip treatment. Two stars go to the clean and pleasant studio and the down to earth receptionist. After I was cozily set up on the warmed table the aesthetician mentioned that I would benefit from exfoliation, however, it was $25 extra. It was annoying that such a basic service was not included. Anyhow a bit later a rubber like mask was put on my face. Its warmth was supposed to open my pores. It smelled of plastic so strongly it gave me a headache. Not relaxing at all. Next came the extractions. Now I am no novice when it comes to facials, but these were the most painful I have ever had. I felt like my face was not prepped enough by the toxic mask thingy. After this procedure one of my pimples was worse. It became enlarged, scabby, and painful. When I complained to the lady and she just suggested I put some antibiotic ointment on it when I got home. I was practically in tears when I left. I had an event the next day and it was not looking better by then. In addition to this I have developed another painful cyst like pimple under a blackhead that she extracted on my upper lip. I've had breakouts after deep pore cleaning but nothing on this level. I wanted to look good for new years eve but that's not going to happen. I will end up with more scarring and hyperpigmentation then if I hadn't gone in the first place. The groupon, exfoliation and tip set me back $85. If you don't have sensitive acne-prone skin this might be the place for you. But otherwise, stay away. read more

I've had quite a few facials over the years and will say that my experience at American Skin Care was one of the all time best. The facility itself is cozy, clean and inviting; it's clear that attention has been given to making the environment part of the overall experience. My Esthetician whose name I cannot remember (an African American woman) was stellar! She was careful to explain each part of her process and was engaging but not so talkative as to be a distraction. She topped the facial off with a neck massage that was out of this world. Several days later and my skin is glowing and supple. My next appointment is already booked. I came to American Skincare after having a negative experience at another salon. I have been getting facials for many years since I dont naturally have nice skin. I tried many salons asking in advance for the facial to focus on extractions, I have large pores and they get clogged often. Many salons would say they would alter the facial to my requests but never did. I spoke with Glenda, the owner and told her what I was looking for. I had a great first facial, and she offered me a package of facials at a discounted price. I couldnt be happier with the facials, I get my extractions and walk out with minimal redness. I have had facials from 3 of the aesthiticians and have to say all of them are really good. Glenda and the girls are always so nice, professional and really take an interest in my skin. I purchased a coupon for a facial from Living Social and a coupon for microdermabrasion from Groupon: I called to schedule my appointment and I was told by the manager with the British accent that I couldn't do that. I asked her if I could just substitute the microdermabrasion for another treatment that costs 40.00. Her response to me was "No", and she proceeded to tell me to call Groupon and get a refund. Since, I was going to spend the money there, I just didn't see the point. I ended up cancelling everything and getting a refund from Living Social and Groupon. The manager is unprofessional, has no patience and very poor people skills. With her poor attitude, she will not obtain too many new customers. read more

I have to completely disagree with Wendy - this place was great. No, it is not a spa, it's skin care center so I didn't expect to have my feet and hands rubbed since I was getting a facial. I appreciated that the aesthetician left the room after putting on the heat mask - I don't want to feel like I have to make idle chatter when getting a facial, so for me that was great (it's so rare to grab a nap...) She was NOT doing another facial while doing mine. So, for the positives: - Great facial - the heat mask (as opposed to steam at other places) seemed to make the extraction much easier. And the treatment at the end to retain moisture was aweome (my skin still looks dewy :-) ) - The products were great and there was no hard sell. - The pricess are great - $55 and it goes down more if you buy a package. Compared to the $90-$125 I've paid at Bella Sante or Gretta Cole (with no better outcome) I'll take it. - The staff was great. I had Tricia and she was knowledgeable without being condescending. I used this place through a groupon and was very disappointed. They offer an "American facial". Apparently they think Americans hate facials. How can you offer any type of facial without exfoliation? Everything is extra in the American Facial except someone washing your face and placing an "electric-style" face mask. I don't know how to explain the mask other than its from silence of the lambs. They put some gel-mask on your face, towels, a cautery type plate under your shoulder (uncomfortable) and then a plastic mask over the towels that apparently elicits a small current into your face to shove the gel-mask into your pours. The mask itself smells bad and is uncomfortable to wear for 10 minutes. While it's different, its not for me. The most annoying thing is that the "American Facial" again offers relatively nothing...no exfoliation, no hydration and no custom mask. Everything is additional. $25 for exfoliation, $15 and up for custom masks, etc. No thank you. Not for me. read more

Three of us went here for facials. We were all booked at the same time so I assumed they had 3 women to work on us. I came to realize when we came out that one woman was providing a facial for my 2 friends at the same time! It became clear to me that this was happening with me as well as my Lady kept leaving my room too. This is NOT acceptable. You do not double book clients for a one hour service!! Could this be what they do to all folks who pay $25 for Groupon or Living Social coupons?!!?! Thank god I did not pay for the full price and I am tempted to complain to the owner but figured I'd write here. For Kate who wrote the first review, you mentioned them leaving the room but you must not have realized you were not the only client they were working on in that hour. Very disappointed! I purchased the microdermabrasion groupon , they did the procedure and try selling me the add ons which should have been included. Such as cleansing and soothing mask, that would have run me additional $65. I refused so she didn't even put a moisturizer on my face. Best facial I have gotten by far! My esthetician, Daniella, was the most knowledgable and informative. She gave me helpful tips for a better daily regimen than the one I was currently using. It was very different than the facials that I have received in the past. Although it was not as relaxing and they didn't rub/massage as many products into your face, the outcomes definitely out weigh this. I will be back to see Daniella! read more

I went there for the first time not expecting much and was extremely pleasantly surprused! It looks very nice on the inside, everything is so clean and smells wonderful. The whole atmosphere there is very relaxing and calming. The owner is wonderful - so lovely, sweet, caring, personally takes care of you, tries to get to know you, does not try to pressure you into buying anything but does tell you about what services the place offers and what might end up being beneficial for you. I went for a facial and I thought that the technician was wonderful as well. I see that in other reviews it said something about how the technician leaves the room during the facial. She did indeed leave the room several times, but for me, that was really relaxing because if all that's happening is that I am laying there waiting for whatever time to go by to let the product on my face work, I don't want someone there in the room with me crowding me, or trying to make small talk, I want to be left alone to relax. I thought it was all done with wonderful tact and great manners and respect. The end result was that my skin looked amazing! Before I left the owner gave me five different samples of great products that I will buy the next time I go and we worked out a packaged deal so that I paid one low price for my facials for six months. She also threw in a free microdermabrasion as part of the package and I had that done and I can't recommend that highly enough - the results are unbelievable, it is worth the money and if you want to get that, you can work out a deal with the owner about that as well. Bottom line - wonderful place, wonderful services, the prices are affordable, the care is amazing - I could not be more pleased. read more

I received a microdermabrasion/facial skin care package from my mom for Christmas and I have been to American Skin Care once a month since January. I had very uneven skin from acne in my teen years and the microdermabrasion has done wonders for me. My skin has never looked better! I used to feel so self conscious about leaving the house without makeup on, but now I just use a tinted moisturizer. I honestly couldnt be happier!!! The girls who work in the salon are super friendly and made me feel really comfortable. Highly recomended!!!! read more

For the past 20 years, I have struggled with my extremely sensitive, acne-prone skin. I have tried everything - every medication out there including Accutane (twice), Clairsonic, Proactive - you name it, I've tried it. Nothing has ever worked except the treatments and home care system I received from American Skin Care. I was always curious about microdermabrasion treatments but wasn't sure if it was worth the investment. The microdermabrasions I received at American Skin Care significantly improved the staining and scarring on my cheeks and the overall tone and texture of my skin. Now, I wear much less makeup, and with regular, monthly facials, my skin remains clear and trouble-free. Not only have I seen great results, but friends and co-workers started commenting on how great my skin looks. I feel so lucky I found American Skin Care - the aestheticians are friendly and knowledgeable and really understood my very sensitive skin type and knew just how to treat it.
