I gave American Soil another chance, and again, this is a clear sign they are going to close soon: don't care, don't want your business, everything is falling apart. I went in to order some bags of soil amendment. A few workers walked by me behind the counter, but never acknowledged me. I even said hi to one, but they just put their hood up and walked away from me. Finally someone came over and took my order. I asked if it was the same process, to pull my car over the side to have them load the soil, and he said yes. I went and drove to the first stop sign, nobody around. I waited a minute, then drove to the end where we usually get the soil loaded from the last time I came. A few workers walked by and ignored me completely. I got out of my car and walked up to someone who was getting out of his forklift, and I asked him if there was someone who could help me, he just waved me off and walked away. I went to another person who was walking around and asked him, and he didn't acknowledge me even when I walked up to him to ask if he could help me. Just straight up ignored me. I then saw two forklifts coming towards my car, so I waited and when he came over, he at least looked at me and I asked if there was someone who could help me. He shook his head and kept driving. So I was waiting for 15 minutes trying to track someone down. So I finally decided to walk back to the main building. When I started walking over there, I saw another worker. I was determined to get an answer. I asked him if he could help me load everything up, and he tried to step around me. I was done being super polite, so I very clearly asked him again to help me. Then he rolled his eyes and asked what I wanted. I handed him the receipt and told him what was on it. LONGEST LOUDEST SIGH from this guy I've ever heard. Like what in the world. You work here. This is your choice I guess? So he walks over to a stack of soil, and points. I walk over and I read the label, and I said yeah, that's it. Then he just stands there. Nothing. Doesn't say a thing and just stares at me. I don't know what he wants so I asked: "What else do you need? Am I supposed to load this myself?" He just stood there, didn't answer my question, and looked like he was going to leave. I asked him: "Do you want me to move my car three feet back or something?" I tried in spanish. Still nothing. I asked him again, and finally he nodded and said "yes, just move it back." Eye roll. These people act like they're doing me a huge favor. They don't want to be here. Nobody cares. This place has gone downhill fast. My last four experiences have been worse and worse. CLEAR signs that there are issues internally and everything is dying. I wonder if the owner knows, or maybe is the reason. There's no way an owner of a company would be OK with this unless something was really wrong. Bad management, ignorance, way worse things to worry about? I don't know, maybe all of it. I'm done coming here. This is just laughable. read more

I had good service from the 2 guys that helped me pick out our backyard rock to be used as a water feature. I wish they had stood the rock up, as it wasn't stable when we got it back to our house. Wow, I have always thought this company to be a one of integrity but my recent experience has changed that idea. I have been purchasing bagged 3/4" fir bark mulch ( $10/bag) religiously this year and the last 4 bags I recently purchased were basically the dregs consisting of loose dirt and crumbly bark. Just inferior quality compared to the product they present to be selling. After contacting management, they basically blamed it on the tree product suppliers and well, that's it. Heard about this place from an employee at East Bay Nursery as we had discussion around garden planning. The selection of rocks was really good, and many options were available and stocked throughout the stone yard. I will say, this being my first time, it was a bit overwhelming and seeing as though my garden design only requires a few larger sized rocks to accent, in comparison to the boulders and large scale stone slabs, I see- I wasn't as clear on how the process works or the steps to take to understand how many tons each palette had, or if I could just grab and go. I stood in line for a moment, then tried to decipher the tags, some of which were faded and illegible. It would've been nice to see an expert on the employee team walking around seeing if customers needed any help. The garden selection in the interior of the location, near the cash wrap and restrooms were overpriced, though they appeared to be speciality imports from Italy. Everything from loose gravel to boulders and beautiful slabs can be found here. I would suggest calling ahead to get a feel. I took several photos in thinking of my design, and will go back when I have a clearer idea. I went here on a Sunday and it was pretty busy, so I didn't wait in line too long to ask questions. Plus, it was hot and the stone yard is out in the open; as seen in the photos. Gorgeous selections, but my comparison is from a rookie perspective; I'll shop around to see who has the best price to support the vision of my garden design. We'll see. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but I just had to call out the amazing service from their driver, Elijah Hope. On delivery day, he called in advance to let me know he'd be there in 20 min--and arrived promptly, as promised. It was my first time ever purchasing such a large order of rock (or anything tbh!), and he was incredibly patient and helpful in advising me on where it'd be best (and safest) to place it. He was also incredibly friendly, hilarious, and just an absolute ray of sunshine and positivity (which I frankly needed, considering the intimidatingly large amount of stone I was going to have to shift in the next few hours!) In terms of the store experience, there is ample parking on-site, and they seem to have a pretty extensive inventory of aggregate, mulch, pavers, various sized rocks, etc, so you'll likely be able to find whatever you need. There were also signs for a drive-through service for advanced orders which seemed cool. I think American Soil & Stone is great for people who know exactly what they need, but not so much if you're new and looking for advice/guidance-- as a complete noob hoping to get some guidance around the weight of their landscaping fabric, what type of rock to use (as aggregate for artificial turf I was putting in), or how much height would be lost to compacting, I wasn't able to get much. The guy I spoke with did try his best to answer my questions though, and was very helpful in advising how much I'd need (they have a great online calculator that customers can use to estimate what they need). There was also a minor issue with the invoicing--when I got home, I realized that there'd been a mix-up, and the cashier had ended up ordering less of the rock than I'd needed (basically there's a person who writes out your order on a chit, and you bring that to the cashier who then puts in the order and hands you a printed invoice after). And I was only able to spot the issue because I compared what I'd been charged to the price listed on their website. That's because their printed invoice was pretty useless--it didn't have the price per unit, or even the amount ordered (just generic '1 unit of X, Total Cost = $Y' vs. '1.5cu of X, Cost per Unity = $Y, Total Cost = $Z'). However, it was very quickly and easily straightened out when I called, and they were very apologetic for the mistake. I had a good experience overall though, and would go back again for sure. read more

I had my project all set up for this Labor Day weekend and ordered top soil from them. The delivery was supposed to get here between 8am to 1pm. I never receive a call from the driver and reach out to them around 3 pm and talked to the manager and requested an update on my delivery. She said that it was out and would be there soon and the driver would text me shortly with an ETA. At around 4:45 I call back knowing they close at 5 to make sure it's still coming. After all I found out the they had the wrong phone number on file and had call me earlier and left me a message explaining that the driver came at noon and couldn't reach me and left and the best she could do is to have it delivered on TUESDAY. I got so upset that I had my whole project plane for these long holiday weekend and they just blowed. So disrespectful and wrong on costumer service side of this company, knowing they are less than 10 minutes away and left me hanging . It's not about waiving the delivery fee that she offers to do or refunding the money, it's the precious time that I've lost as a DYIER like me that I can't even put a pride tag on.
