My wife and I ate at the American Star Diner on Saturday, December 13, 2025. The diner has recently reopened under new management--and you can definitely tell. We really enjoyed both the service and the food. There are lots of great options on the breakfast menu, and everything we had was well prepared. A big bonus in my opinion: you can swap out the potatoes for grits, which is always a win in my book especially in the mid-Atlantic! We'll definitely be back!

    American star breakfest

Update from the last experience.. sunday brunch time, two of us dined in, I ordered american breakFest as usual, with two over easy egg and one scrambled egg, This waitress told me i can pick only one but i said i normally order two type and nobody ever gave me a trouble, food like you can see in the picture from previous. Then she just said ok and took the order. When i got the food, i got two scrambled eggs and one over easy , opposite of what i asked for. Again, She checked her order pad (?) and told me she wrote down two scrambled eggs and one over easy.... I think while she was telling me i can pick only one, she took the order wrong. Since then, she didn't come to check on our table til the end, we just asked for check. I know it could be just one egg but i wanted the breakfast the way i ordered! And the vibe was not right Only good thing was that they took applepay.

Scrambled eggs and strawberry stuffed french toast

When my friends took me to AmStar (as they affectionately call it), a couple of them got omelettes, another got lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes, and I got the strawberry stuffed french toast. I wanted protein, so I just got eggs on the side. This french toast was good enough that I wanted to take home the leftovers. It had strawberry flavored cream cheese inside and sweetened strawberries on top. It reminded me of IHOP's strawberry crepes. Both the eggs and bread came out without being over or underdone. Coffee wasn't bad either. It came with free refills (as every diner should). My friends always joke about AmStar being a crappy diner, but I honestly didn't think it was that bad. It has all the essentials you would want from a diner. The interior reminds me of a classic diner with the red and blue neon lights, food court style tables, and floors that remind me of a school hallway. It also has a rotating specials menu with more creative dishes. Also, our server was super attentive. Never had to wait long for a coffee refill or the check. Thanks AmStar!

I really like the breakfast here , excellent service and some really great options! I recently tried the cream chipped beef , this is something I never order but it was by far the best cream chipped beef I have ever eaten! The omelettes are great and the 2-2-2 was my go to breakfast for years . They have a breakfast bar so you can get in and out quickly and easily. Great option for breakfast! I also had the salad bar which was also solid , but definitely not where it was pre Covid. I am looking forward to trying sone more breakfast options , and the waffle a la mode , pictured, was fantastic although more hot fudge would have bee

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Classic diner vibes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was good. I got the 2-2-2 with eggs, French toast, and sausage. Sausage was cooked to perfection, nice & juicy with a snap. Eggs were cooked perfectly at over medium but there was unfortunately egg shells in it. French toast was nothing to write home about, I would recommend to get the pancakes instead. Food would feel more worth if it came with home fries tbh. Presentation looked really sad.

AmStar (friendly local nickname) was a classic diner where you found cheap prices for dishes of american cuisine made of eggs, potatoes, and waffles. Simple but classic. Wasn't expecting much but came out more satisfied than expected. The diner has improved over the years. It used to be open 24/7 but the hours have changed. The savory food was alright but the sweet things like the french toast and pancakes we're great! The look was also classic, retro diner vibe. I think the special menu was good and our waiter came by often which was cool.

In my opinion, they have the best happy hour in the area. It's every day from 5-7 PM, which is a refreshing change from the typical Monday-Friday happy hours that end at 6. We usually sit at the bar, and the bartenders are always friendly, attentive, and make you feel welcome. The happy hour food and drink specials are a fantastic value. It's easy to enjoy a great evening out for under $50, which is becoming harder to find these days. The crowd is usually friendly too, making it a fun place to relax and socialize. As for the food, I honestly can't remember having a bad meal here. Everything we've ordered has been flavorful, satisfying, and generously portioned. Unlike many restaurants today, you don't leave feeling like you paid inflated prices for tiny portions. If you're looking for a place with great food, excellent service, an outstanding happy hour, and a welcoming atmosphere, the Metropolitan Diner is definitely worth a visit. It's become one of our favorite local spots, and we'll be back many more times.

We didn't stay, I felt that was rude and dismissive. My wife and I did come back today because they open at 10am on Sundays. The food was absolutely horrible. We ordered the eggroll sampler and fried pickles as an app. The eggrolls were tasteless, and the fried pickles were so greasy we couldn't eat them. Then on to the entrees, I ordered the brunch burger and my wife the French toast with bacon. French toast is what it is...not much you can do (and I still question my wife about ordering it). The burger, flavorless and overcooked. To make this experience better, the bacon for my wife's side and on my burger...completely raw. The food took a long time to come out, so no excuses. The service was good and I don't blame them for this. But far too many missteps. This is not just a mistake on one item...this is a restaurant that's lost its way.

If you're just looking for a simple, no-frills meal, it'll do - but if you're after something special, you might want to keep searching Ralph's itself was serviceably clean yet not exactly sparkling. The menu was as basic as it gets, with no specials or anything to make the offerings stand out. A blackboard with daily features could have added some much-needed variety. Service was similarly uninspired. The staff was polite but not particularly warm or attentive. Our coffee cups sat empty for far too long, and we sat for quite some time, waiting for refills that never came. Oddly enough, the highlight of the experience wasn't the food but another waitress, who cheerfully sang along with the radio. She seemed to be the only one genuinely enjoying her job, and we couldn't help but wish she had been our server. As for the food? It was edible. Nothing was bad, but not memorable either.
